To round off the year, we speak to James Lewindon, Head of Client Development UK at Pinsent Masons Vario, the global law firm and alternative legal services provider. Although he started out as a history teacher, James has built a strikingly varied, ‘squiggly' career: from working for a newspaper and entrepreneurship skills programmes in schools, to leading a science centre team building exhibits, moving into management consulting within a global law firm, launching and scaling a legal resourcing business, serving as a CEO in a legal employment and training business, to now joining Pinsent Masons Vario in 2025.James' story shows us that a long-term career plan isn't always essential for a fulfilling career. Driven by a fear of “Groundhog Day,” James moves on when the sense of challenge fades, shaping a path that plays to his strengths and preferred environments. Rather than pursuing a fixed-end career goal, he prefers to seek roles that offer stability, but also the space to grow, learn, experiment, and create. In this episode, we also explore imposter syndrome, the experience of redundancy, and the power of asking your network for feedback and support along the way.

The latest episode of the Nomad Futurist podcast features Chris Moon, Managing Director at DigitalBridge, offering a thoughtful exploration of the evolving landscape of digital infrastructure finance alongside the personal journey that brought him to the forefront of this dynamic sector. Chris opens the conversation with a clear mission, one shared by co-hosts Nabeel Mahmood and Phillip Koblence: to inspire the next generation by demystifying the path into digital infrastructure. Chris' story stands out as a compelling blueprint for those whose careers may not follow a linear path. He reflects on his current role and the distinct market position of DigitalBridge: “We are the only infrastructure debt fund focused only on digital infrastructure. And we do this with a team of eight of us.... go[ing] out and provid[ing] capital to these businesses that need it to get to the next level.” Chris explains that DigitalBridge's investment strategy is centered on the middle market — companies that are too large for venture capital but not yet ready for public markets or securitization. These businesses, often operating in data centers, fiber networks, and cell towers, require highly specialized and flexible capital to support key phases of growth. As he puts it: “In the middle market, you've got a lot of businesses that have the risk profile of mission-critical infrastructure, yet you can still get the yield that is typically associated with corporate loans. So, that's the risk-return mismatch we're looking for.” The conversation also explores Chris' unconventional career path. Initially aiming for a completely different profession, he shares how a pivot early on led him toward finance and infrastructure — underscoring the value of remaining open to unexpected opportunities: “I initially was an education major when I went to college. I thought I was going to be a History Teacher. That was what I really wanted to do. And then, you know, very candidly, I found out within the first year what a History Teacher makes and realized that just wasn't for me.” Throughout the episode, Chris offers valuable insight into both the technical and human aspects of the digital infrastructure world. His journey — from aspiring Educator to Managing Director of a specialized infrastructure debt fund — highlights the importance of adaptability, subject matter expertise, and seizing opportunities in a rapidly evolving industry. Amanda Clawson and her Grade 4 students recently won a contest naming Hancock Health's new da Vinci 5 surgical system robot. The Sugar Creek Elementary teacher said, “I just went for it, and the kids were excited about it. I didn't really think anything would come of it or that we would win because the whole county could enter, but it was just exciting for the kids to win.”The robot, one of 1,700 in the country, is used in surgeries for hernias, gallbladder and uterine-related issues. Other Indianapolis-area hospitals also have the technology that allows patients to have minimally invasive procedures, faster healing and shorter downtimes.Student Lili Appleget said, “There's like little microscopes, and it'll poke little holes so it can get to what it needs to get to.”Appleget who came up with the idea to name it “Gizmo.” The fourth graders voted on the name and submitted it for the contest. Lili thinks the name will make kids comfortable when they are in the hospital, and that it's easy to pronounce.Clawson's class got to take a trip to the hospital to learn how the robot works. For the teacher, the experience was not just about winning, but also about giving her students a chance to see the impact of their efforts and learn that they can be a part of something much bigger than themselves. “Especially to have them have important community members recognize their writing and pay attention to their writing. They don't get that very often.”The teacher hopes to enter future classes in similar competitions to show her students that they have a powerful voice in science, technology, and beyond. “It was fun, engaging. It got the kids to write more. Even if it wasn't a writing project, it was more of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) project, but we included writing with it, so something math related could be fun in the future or continuing our writing journey.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

And she can say that she is very proud that she had been an MIEE since 2017.   Her main goals as a teacher are to ignite my student's curiosity about learning, to show them the world beyond the classroom and help them to become well educated and happy adults.

The most defining difference between people in the US is not cultural, racial, ethnic, or gender based, but ideological. Second in the summer reading series is the title, "Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me" by Winfred Reilly. The obvious relation to the older text "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James Loewen is obvious. Where Reilly is upfront of his bias, Loewen obscures it (along with Howard Zinn). Reilly's work would help the diversity, equity, and inclusion that is championed in most classrooms today. Mary and Charlie also share how they focus on connection before content in the classroom and try to create a “brave space” for their students. Ultimately, our conversation ends on an uplifting note - with the two educators focusing on how their students and colleagues inspire them, and how this time of polarization creates an opportunity for independent schools to shine.
