Public health agencies are playing an increasingly important role in alerting residents to the risks of wildfire smoke as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of wildfires in the West. But that messaging can lack important information about the severity of that risk and specific actions that can be taken to mitigate it, according to a new study from the University of Oregon. The study examined nearly 1,300 messages about wildfire smoke exposure that were sent in 2022 by federal, state and county health agencies in Oregon and Washington using the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. While slightly more than half the tweets were sent during September and October when wildfire smoke peaked, less than a fifth of them contained useful air quality descriptions or steps residents could take to mitigate exposure to it, such as using an air purifier at home or wearing a mask outdoors to filter out ash and smoke particles. Joining us to discuss the findings, and the opportunities they reveal to better communicate wildfire smoke health risks is Cathy Slavik, the lead author of the study and a research associate at the Center for Science Communication Research at the University of Oregon.
In early 2020 a group of behavioral scientists from around the world came up with about 20 science-based recommendations for public policymakers regarding COVID-19. Ellen Peters, the director of the University of Oregon’s Center for Science Communication Research, was among them. Those recommendations were published in the April 2020 issue of Nature and included messaging recommendations from social distancing to how to work with individual communities. Now, nearly four years later, those same researchers — and an independent panel of scientists not involved in the original research — looked back at the real world data to see how accurate those recommendations were. Both groups found that about 84% of the original recommendations were accurate. Their findings have just been published in the December 2023 issue of Nature. We talk with Peters about some of the recommendations and what the results say about the scientific process and public’s confidence in science.

Alex Segrè Cohen is an assistant professor of Science and Risk Communication in the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon. While some of us spent the long days of the early pandemic cleaning out the refrigerator or adopting a puppy, others – like Dr. M Jackson – spent it searching for a hidden hoard of pirate gold in Alaska. The adventure, filmed in summer 2020 and chronicled in the hit 2022 Netflix series Pirate Gold of Adak Island, is but one of many far-flung locales that this UO grad has traveled in her exciting career in search of what the earth can reveal. Indeed – as a geographer, glaciologist, National Geographic Explorer, Fulbright Ambassador, TED Fellow, Peace Corps volunteer, and author – Dr. Jackson's life has mostly been about seeing and doing things differently than many of her peers. Earning her doctorate from the UO in 2017, Dr. Jackson explored how climate change transformed people and glacier communities in Iceland. A staunch advocate of communicating science in ways that resonate outside of the Academy, Dr. Jackson worked for more than a decade in the Artic, chronicling climate change, communities, and glacial systems. Her sustained interrogation of “who gets to practice glacial science” still forms the backbone of her professional practice. Dr. Jackson is interviewed on the podcast by Dr. Hollie Smith, Associate Professor of Science and Environmental Communication and Associate Director for the UO Center for Science Communication Research. To many mathematicians and math enthusiasts, the word "innumeracy" brings to mind popular writing like that of John Allen Paulos. But inequities in our quantitative reasoning skills have received considerable interest and attention from researchers lately, including in psychology, development, education, and public health. Innumeracy in the Wild: Misunderstanding and Misusing Numbers (Oxford University Press, 2020) is a unified treatment of these broad-ranging studies, from the ways more and less numerate people differ in our perceptions of risk and our number-based decisions to the roots of our numeric faculties and how we can make the best of them. Dr. Ellen Peters has made significant contributions to the subject and brings her expertise and an exceptional clarity to its presentation. Precious little of the research surveyed in her book could fit into this interview! We discussed the three components of numeric ability—objective numeracy, subjective numeracy, and the innate number sense—and how they vary within and across populations. We talked through some key lessons from this literature, such as the importance of calibrating our self-efficacy to our real ability and an awareness of how our cultural allegiances can drive even our mathematical reasoning. Dr Merryn McKinnon's original degree was in marine science where, after the novelty of moving intertidal snails with a paint scraper wore off, she discovered that talking about her research to other people brought her far closer to her conservation goals than her actual project ever could. This led her to the field of science communication where she has stayed ever since, working in a range of roles and countries. Merryn enjoys the diverse issues science communication allows her to explore, applying her innovative thinking and problem-solving skills. Merryn has worked and conducted qualitative and quantitative research nationally and internationally, in both non-academic and academic roles. She regularly contributes to ABC Radio on ABC Sydney's Nightlife and Radio National's Research Filter, talking about interesting science from around the world. Merryn designs and delivers science communication workshops, as well as workshops specifically for women in STEM. Merryn's research contributes to a better understanding of the relationship between science, media and publics. She conducts research which explores why publics react and respond to scientific issues the way they do in a variety of different disciplines including public health and conservation science.
