One of New Zealand's biggest musicians, Hollie Smith, has been experimenting with other types of art. Smith has been dabbling in painting, and is showcasing her entry into the world of visual art with her new exhibition ‘It's Not Music' at artist FLOX's gallery in Auckland. She hasn't completely abandoned her music, as she plans to embark on a small venue tour of New Zealand later this month. She says the music scene has slowed down since Covid - and she needed to expand to a new creative outlet. "The industry's still really struggling...I recently moved back to my house in Tauranga, I'm just on my own down here and just had a lot of time on my hands, I just needed a new creative outlet." While some of us spent the long days of the early pandemic cleaning out the refrigerator or adopting a puppy, others – like Dr. M Jackson – spent it searching for a hidden hoard of pirate gold in Alaska. The adventure, filmed in summer 2020 and chronicled in the hit 2022 Netflix series Pirate Gold of Adak Island, is but one of many far-flung locales that this UO grad has traveled in her exciting career in search of what the earth can reveal. Indeed – as a geographer, glaciologist, National Geographic Explorer, Fulbright Ambassador, TED Fellow, Peace Corps volunteer, and author – Dr. Jackson's life has mostly been about seeing and doing things differently than many of her peers. Earning her doctorate from the UO in 2017, Dr. Jackson explored how climate change transformed people and glacier communities in Iceland. A staunch advocate of communicating science in ways that resonate outside of the Academy, Dr. Jackson worked for more than a decade in the Artic, chronicling climate change, communities, and glacial systems. Her sustained interrogation of “who gets to practice glacial science” still forms the backbone of her professional practice. Dr. Jackson is interviewed on the podcast by Dr. Hollie Smith, Associate Professor of Science and Environmental Communication and Associate Director for the UO Center for Science Communication Research. As two women who have reflected deeply about “what knowledges” are permitted in the scientific realm and how scientific discoveries are shared with the public, their captivating conversation will naturally connect with scientists and non-scientists alike. Dr. Jackson's 2015 memoir, While Glaciers Slept: Being Human in a Time of Climate Change, knits together stories of climate change in both family and planet. Her 2019 book, The Secret Lives of Glaciers, examines the profound impacts of glacier change on the human and physical geography of Iceland. Her forthcoming (and first) novel, The Ice Sings Back, is set in the Pacific Northwest, where M – in between travels to ice around the world – makes her home with her husband and young son. Read Dr. M Jackson's newest novel, The Ice Sings Back, available beginning in January 2023 https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-ice-sings-back-m-jackson/18660400 For more information on Dr. M Jackson, visit: https://www.drmjackson.com/ Keep in touch! My guest today is Hollie Smith.   Hollie Smith is one of New Zealand's most predominant & iconic musicians. After working with numerous bands including Trinity Roots, Fat Freddy's Drop and Detroit dance legend Recloose, she was approached by NZ songwriting royalty Don McGlashan to perform on a movie soundtrack single ‘Bathe in The River' that topped the New Zealand singles charts and became one of the biggest and iconic singles in New Zealand history.   This set the stage for Hollie's debut album ‘Long Player' released in 2007 which went straight to number one on the NZ charts. The album reached multi-platinum status, and was followed with sold out tours and then saw her take away several NZ music awards that year which included ‘Best Producer', ‘Best Female Solo Artist' and ‘Breakthrough artist of the year'.   Hollie has gone on to record 2 more solo albums, "Humour and the Misfortune of Others", and "Water or Gold". And she's has recently begun production on a long awaited new album.    Hollie Smith is a prolific hardworking singer/songwriter and performer, and has always maintained a highly respected reputation of creating music with the upmost integrity & passion, not to mention her incredible live performances and powerhouse vocals.   Im extremely honoured to have gotten to sit and chat with Hollie for this podcast. So ladies and gentleman, please sit back and open your ears to some of the life and times of Hollie Smith.   This podcast episdoe was recorded 08/07/2020.   Intro Music: "Lady Dee" - Hollie Smith (Water or Gold) Outro Music: "Philosophy" - Hollie Smith (Long Player)   For more on Hollie: Facebook Instagram Website  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   Click here to securely donate to The Gig Life Podcast via PayPal.   Your support is very much appreciated. Stan Walker, Tiki Taane and Anna Coddington are among more than 20 Kiwi music stars who have formed a supergroup to record a Covid-19-busting tune from lockdown.Made across just seven days by singers and musicians in their living rooms, garages and back yards, 'Stay' is a waiata - and accompanying video - urging Kiwis to stay home to save lives.Released today, 100 per cent of the proceeds from the song and video is being donated to Music Helps, a charity that provides emergency help for Kiwi musicians facing hardship or illness and invests in music projects to help those in need. The idea originated from Anaru Mill, the head of Manaaki, a Government aid fund that's part of the national Covid Command group. After a string of conversations, Mikee Tucker from Loop, an Auckland-based company with a portfolio that includes a record label, got involved and enlisted some of our brightest stars.A collaboration with Te Māngai Pāho, the Crown entity responsible for the promotion of Māori language and culture, it's designed to showcase how Kiwis can pull together in a time of crisis.Produced by Tucker and written by Anna Coddington, Rob Ruha, Scott Tindale, Brad Kora, Ara Adams-Tamatea and Joel Shadbolt, vocalists include Walker, Taane, Ria Hall and Troy Kingi.Shadbolt - lead vocalist and guitarist with L.A.B. who recently topped the chart with In The Air - helped arrange the song and said the opportunity the create a positive message was "inviting"."Zoom's our best friend for this!" he said."We had one original meeting for the singers and songwriters over Zoom, and then voila."Once the song was written, a demo was sent to everyone. The singers recorded their own parts and sent the audio to producers who crafted the final version over three days."We went from that phone call to a completed song all in one week," Shadbolt said.He hopes it will encourage Kiwis by example."With the status of all these musicians, hopefully people will see that and say, oh if they're staying home so must I."Stay will be available via Apple Music and Spotify. Loop hopes people will share the track - and video - to circulate and reinforce the stay-at-home message. The full list of featured artists is: Joel Shadbolt (L.A.B), Troy Kingi, Stan Walker, Anna Coddington, Theia, Bailey Wiley, Rob Ruha, Pere Wihongi (Maimoa), Jackson Owens, Kings, Rei, Ria Hall, Hollie Smith, Tiki Taane, Fran Kora (Kora), Logan Bell (Katchafire) and Brad Kora (L.A.B).

Darren Mathiassen. Bluff-born D's organic grooves are integral to the homegrown flavours of Aotearoa, through groups and artists such as Iva Lamkum, Rhombus, Age Pryor, Bella Kalolo, Charlotte Yates and Trinity Roots (in particular, with the iconic Little Things), but his long-standing bond with sterling soul sista, Hollie Smith, has produced both top selling albums and unforgettable performances. And then auspiciously, much to the excitement of hardcore festival party goers, as of NYE 2012/13, D picked up heavier sticks and became the pounding heart of soul'n'drum'n'bass behemoth, Shapeshifter Recorded in Sydney, Australia 27/10/18 (intro track: Water or Gold - Hollie Smith) http://www.darrenmathiassen.com/wp/ https://shapeshifter.co.nz https://www.facebook.com/shapeshifterlivenz/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/4whp3jSWWaITn36r9D4ZLf?si=d0K7O4RvRbyhyiZG20Homw https://www.holliesmith.co.nz https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPgXrJM4a5sx_-3iIlyk_lw
