When Alex sent me the article about a Cybersex club as background to this episode's discussion, I was sold on the idea immediately. The sex industry has always been a part of society. For as long as communities have existed, sex has been traded in one form or another. Sex is the vehicle through which society grows, quite literally.Sex motivates and inspires and innovates. Sex pushes boundaries in ways most sectors cannot fathom. However sex and the sex industry must adhere to very specific rules if they are to operate in a law-abiding society and the first rule is legal consent. Here are some links Alex wanted to share:The New Age of Sexism: How the AI Revolution is Reinventing Misogyny, by Laura Bates (reading her books in general is a good idea, as she has evolved into an excellent resource for fighting misogyny).https://www.awesomebooks.com/book/9781471190483/the-new-age-of-sexismYour Brain on Porn: Internet Pornography and The Emerging Science of Addiction, by Gary Wilson (this book is ten years old but is a good fence-post of significant research, even if I do not agree with all of it).https://www.awesomebooks.com/book/9780993161605/your-brain-on-pornTakedown: Inside The Fight To Shut Down Pornhub for Child Abuse, Rape, and Sex Trafficking, by Laila Mickelwait.(This is only available in Kindle or Audio format)https://amzn.eu/d/e0cqrdMI can be found here, if anyone is nuts enough to want to talk to me.https://bsky.app/profile/underdark.mediaI welcome opinions of every kind so please come and find me on social media at:Instagram: TwoandaMicTwitter: TwoandaMic1Should I really have to ask?
In their discussion of the struggle with the passions and in particular those associated with the bodily appetites and what we experienced through the senses, the fathers do not neglect to show us the effect that our thoughts and our lack of watchfulness can have upon the unconscious. Certain images and ideas will emerge from our dreams and often take on a form that can be agitating or of a subject matter that is disturbing spiritually. The fathers want us to understand that we are not morally culpable for what arises during the night in our dreams nor can the Evil One directly influence what happens because of our dreams such as nocturnal emissions. Yet, are not to ruminate upon the meaning or the content of these dreams during the day. To do so is to open ourselves “daydreaming”, where we openly allow ourselves to think about images thoughts and ideas that came to mind during the night. Such rumination then can be a source of temptation for us. It is best to set such thoughts aside and focus on fostering temperance and love. As long as we are focused upon God then what arises out of the unconscious will eventually be healed as well. However, if we are slothful or worse prideful we become more subject to the effects of such a dreams or their frequency will become more prominent in our life because of our lack of spiritual discipline. In Hypothesis XXXII, our attention is drawn toward the work of contrition. Saint Gregory tells us that contrition manifest itself in many forms of spiritual beauty. This is striking if only because of the negative connotation that the word contrition sometimes holds. Saint Gregory tells us that ultimately it is a path to beauty, goodness and love. When a soul first seeks after God at the outset it feels contrition out of fear. It is humbled by the depths of its poverty and how contrary this is to that which is good and to our essential dignity. Tears begin to flow and as they do the soul begins to develop a certain courage in the spiritual life and is warmed by a desire for heavenly joy. The soul which shortly before wept from the fear that it might be condemned, eventually weeps bitterly simply because of how far it perceives itself from the kingdom of heaven. As the soul is cleansed, however, it clearly beholds before it what the choirs of angels are and the splendor that belongs to these blessed spirits. Ultimately, the soul begins to behold the vision of God himself. One then weeps for joy as it waits to experience this vision in its fullness. When perfect contrition emerges then the soul's thirst for God is satiated; tears now turning in to the living waters of the kingdom. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:11:02 Lorraine Green: Fr., can you take a Mass request? Welcome to episode #973 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Alison Wood Brooks is one of the leading voices in understanding the science of human conversation, and her latest book, Talk - The Science of Conversation and the Art of Being Ourselves, explores just how complex, delicate, and transformative our daily interactions can be. As a professor at Harvard Business School, Alison has spent years studying the psychology behind dialogue - why some conversations feel effortless while others fall flat, how we navigate social dynamics, and why even the simplest exchanges can shape our relationships and success. In our conversation, we explore the difference between Q&A and true dialogue, the often-overlooked art of reading the room, and the skills that can make or break an interaction. Alison shares insights on the role of AI in companionship, the way egocentrism naturally seeps into our conversations, and why teaching conversational skills is more critical than ever in a digital-first world. We also discuss the post-Covid social shift, the importance of face-to-face interactions, and how conversational missteps - something we all experience - can actually strengthen relationships if handled the right way. Her TALK Maxims (Topics, Asking, Levity, Kindness) offer a simple yet powerful framework for improving everyday communication, whether in personal relationships, business, or even in navigating difficult discussions. If you've ever struggled with what to say, when to say it, or how to be a better conversationalist, this episode will help you rethink the way you talk... and listen. Enjoy the conversation... In this episode, part of a special collaboration between ACM ByteCast and the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA)'s For Your Informatics podcast, Sabrina Hsueh hosts accessibility researcher and inventor Chieko Asakawa, an IBM Fellow at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, the Chief Executive Director of The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) in Japan, and an IBM Distinguished Service Professor at Carnegie Mellon University. Chieko's inventions include the Home Page Reader (HPR); a word processor for Braille documents; a digital library for Braille documents; an application to improve accessibility of streaming services; and, most recently, the AI Suitcase project. Her career has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards and honors, including becoming the first Japanese woman IBM Fellow in 2009, receiving the “Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon” from the Emperor of Japan in 2013, her induction into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2019, being named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, and the ACM SIGACCESS Award for Outstanding Contributions to Computing and Accessibility in 2024. In the interview, Chieko shares how becoming blind early in life led her to work in accessibility research. She talks about her IBM team's work on the Home Page Reader, the first practical voice browser to provide effective internet access for blind and visually impaired computer users, as well as more recent work on the AI suitcase, a robot that helps visually impaired people walk around and navigate independently. Chieko and Sabrina touch on AI's potential in aiding accessibility and the inspiration for the AI Suitcase. She offers advice and best practices for both early and mid-career researchers and interdisciplinary professionals.
Once again, my first thought at the end of this group is “Revolution“. When read in the context of all that we have considered from The Evergetinos to date and from St. John Climacus, our entire way of viewing reality is being challenged, overthrown, or illuminated. One begins to see that our capacity as Christians to read and hear the Gospel, let alone the writings of the fathers, has been compromised. We have been formed in and by an atheistic secular culture. That culture has permeated the Church in modern times in ways that we cannot even comprehend. God has revealed himself to us; not only the depth of his love and compassion, but also the reality of sin and the struggle that remains for us within this world. We cannot understand the danger of fornication and lust to our salvation unless we come to understand the importance of purity of heart. God has created us for Himself, in His image and likeness, and our desire must be directed toward Him if we are to experience the fulfillment of the deepest longings of the human heart - let alone the right ordering of our bodily desires. Thus, our lust or fornication is not simply a moral infraction or a negative view of human sexuality but evidence of an idolatry of the self and so adultery in regard to our relationship with God - infidelity in regard to the Heavenly Bridegroom who has given Himself to us completely. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:22:39 Bob Cihak, AZ: P. 195, # A 00:31:49 Myles Davidson: There's a book called Your Brain On Porn about the brain changes that happen 00:35:05 Myles Davidson: Yes, its a book… Your Brain on Porn: Internet Pornography and the Emerging Science of Addiction https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00N2AH8NW?ref_=mr_referred_us_au_nz 00:43:58 Myles Davidson: John Cassian does a good job of outlining the difference between abstinence and chastity (Conference 12) 00:49:41 Forrest Cavalier: If they are unrepentant in a state of mortal sin, the attempt to be married will fail. 00:55:26 Anna Lalonde: Yes! Donald Hoffman is back on Know Thyself today to explore the constraints of time and space, and how they shape our understanding of the world around us. He discusses the "headset analogy" - the idea that our senses act as a kind of cognitive filter, preventing us from directly perceiving the true nature of reality. Donald delves into the paradoxes found in various mathematical theorems, and his newest research on "conscious agents" and how it relates to the Gaia hypothesis. The significance of mystical experiences and their potential to reveal truths about the nature of reality is also covered. Hoffman also opens up about his thoughts on reincarnation, the relationship between science and spirituality, and the possibility of artificial intelligence becoming truly conscious. In this episode , I speak to Nathan Price, PhD, co-author with Leroy Hood of The Age of Scientific Wellness. Nathan is Chief Scientific Officer of Thorne and was previously CEO of Onegevity, an AI health intelligence company that merged with Thorne prior to its IPO in 2021. We discuss a wide range of topics and questions, including: There is a seeming contradiction between the dramatic success of the 20th century model of healthcare and the realization that it is ineffective in meeting the challenges of the 21st century. What has happened? In your book, you state that the future of medicine is personalized, predictive, data rich and in your hands. Can you explain? You make a bold prediction in your book: We are on the cusp of time when we will have the capacity to begin to eliminate most chronic diseases of our time, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and metabolic diseases. Is this realistic? A growing number of self-declared health care providers take advantage of the situation by promoting quackery and snake oil approaches. What will it take to make an end to this proliferation of fake healthcare? A major challenge of implementing the transition to a new personalized healthcare system is the successful business model of the current system (The Medical Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex), which makes billions of $$ in corporate and individual profits by keeping people alive without preventing or curing their diseases. How can we meet this challenge?

“Wonder, the mental state of openness, questioning, curiosity, and embracing mystery, arises out of experiences of awe. In our studies, people who find more everyday awe show evidence of living with wonder." ― Dacher Keltner, Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life I am thrilled to announce that our new book, the Kindness Daily Reader: Season One, will be available from July 1, 2024. Secondly, we are embarking on a new chapter with Season Three of the One Kind Moment podcast. In Season One, we primarily focused on broad topics of kindness and compassion, while in Season Two, we explored areas such as self-compassion, self-help, and self-care. Now, in Season Three, we're shifting our focus to a specific area of self-care that we call Practical Spirituality for Everyone. The esteemed Dr. Leonard Sax joins us this week to share his expertise on how sex differences impact child-rearing, parenting, and education. We begin with a discussion of biological differences between male and female brains, particularly when it comes to sense perception, which can lead to misunderstandings between the sexes. Dr. Sax highlights the importance of understanding these differences in order to optimize children's learning and home environments. The conversation then shifts to the topic of gender atypicality and how parents and educators might embrace the richness and complexity of the human experience, allowing children to explore their interests and preferences without being labeled transgender. We discuss the challenges faced by boys in today's society, including the growing gender gap in academic achievements, and how teachers can cater to the unique developmental needs of both sexes in co-ed schools.Dr. Sax provides practical advice for parents and educators on how to navigate sex differences and create a culture of respect and understanding. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing and celebrating the diversity of gender expression, while also respecting biological differences.Leonard Sax MD PhD is a board-certified family physician and PhD psychologist with more than 30 years of clinical experience. Over the past 22 years, he has visited more than 500 schools across the United States and worldwide, speaking to parents about many topics including social media, video games, and gender issues. He also leads workshops for teachers on gender-aware instructional strategies, on building a culture of respect, and on dealing with difficult parents. He has published four books for parents: Why Gender Matters, Boys Adrift, Girls on the Edge, and The Collapse of Parenting, which was a New York Times bestseller. You've probably heard the buzz about melatonin. Whether it's your neighbor who swears it's the secret to their sound sleep or the endless articles touting its myriad health benefits, melatonin is having a moment. And for a good reason. It's a crucial component of your circadian rhythm, which not only regulates sleep but most aspects of your health. Though I've titled this post as a "complete guide," it's written for the average person who's interested in improving their health without needing to delve too deep into scientific research. For those who enjoy reading research, I strongly recommend reading Is Melatonin the “Next Vitamin D”?: A Review of Emerging Science, Clinical Uses, Safety, and Dietary Supplements. Some friends and colleagues are the authors, and I don't know that I've ever come across such a comprehensive publication about this hormone. As for this article, I'll get deep enough for you to appreciate melatonin's role in your health and provide enough answers that you should be able to share its value with friends and family when the topic comes up. What is Melatonin? Melatonin is a hormone, a chemical messenger in your body. Produced primarily in your pineal gland—a tiny organ in your brain—melatonin is your body's natural "sleep hormone."Reiter, R. J., Tan, D. X., Kim, S. J., & Manchester, L. C. (2014). Melatonin: A multitasking molecule. Progress in Brain Research, 181, 127–151. But it's is more than just a sleep hormone; it's a fascinating chemical. Officially known as N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, melatonin has a specific structure that allows it to easily cross cell membranes and even the blood-brain barrier.Zisapel, N. (2018). New perspectives on the role of melatonin in human sleep, circadian rhythms, and their regulation. British Journal of Pharmacology, 175(16), 3190–3199. This unique trait is what enables it to have such widespread effects on the body. While your body produces its own melatonin, you can also find it in certain foods like cherries, grapes, and tomatoes.Howatson, G., Bell, P. G., Tallent, J., Middleton, B., McHugh, M. P., & Ellis, J. (2012). Effect of tart cherry juice (Prunus cerasus) on melatonin levels and enhanced sleep quality. European Journal of Nutrition, 51(8), 909–916. Some people opt for melatonin supplements, which usually come in pill or liquid form, to help them get the full range of its benefits. So, how does melatonin help you sleep? Think of it as the conductor of your body's biological orchestra. As evening approaches, levels rise, telling your body to lower its temperature and prepare for rest.Lewy, A. J., Wehr, T. A., Goodwin, F. K., Newsome, D. A., & Markey, S. P. (1998). Light suppresses melatonin secretion in humans. Science, 210(4475), 1267–1269. It essentially sets the stage for a good night's sleep by working in sync with your body's natural circadian rhythm. Health Benefits of Melatonin If there's one thing melatonin is famous for, it's sleep. Supplementing with it can help you fall asleep faster and even improve the quality of your sleep.Ferracioli-Oda, E., Qawasmi, A., & Bloch, M. H. (2013). Meta-analysis: Melatonin for the treatment of primary sleep disorders. PLOS ONE, 8(5), e63773. While it's not a one-size-fits-all solution, it's a go-to for many who struggle with sleep issues. Melatonin works by influencing your body's internal clock. It encourages the physiological changes needed for sleep, such as muscle relaxation and lowered body temperature.Zisapel, N. (2018). New perspectives on the role of melatonin in human sleep, circadian rhythms, and their regulation. British Journal of Pharmacology, 175(16), 3190–3199. Dosage can vary, but a common starting point is around 1 to 3 mg about 30 minutes before bedtime. However, it's always wise to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice.Auld, F., Maschauer, E. L., Morrison, I., Skene, D. J., & Riha, R. L. (2017).

You get dopamine from the anticipation of a particular experience that's posed in the future. But once you have the experience, that dopamine baseline goes down. You get a little bit of a hit upon the moment of arrival but then the more you do it, the less of the pleasure you get, and then you need to do more of it to keep the dopamine baseline steady." - Ronnie Landis Links From Today's Show Ronnie Landis W+W 349 Ronnie Landis | Rethinking Veganism: The 10 Year Journey Back Home W+W 122 The Truth About Nutrients – Ronnie Landis The Addiction Free Lifestyle by Ronnie Landis Gabor Maté A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens Richard Rudd 462 Ben Greenfield: Should You STOP Using Plant Medicines? In the past twenty years, research suggests that parents are worrying more about their children and spending more to provide them with comforts. In spite of such worry and wealth, the past twenty years have also seen an increase in these same American-born children from well-to-do families being diagnosed with various psychiatric disorders. Meanwhile, parents tend to swing from overly strict to overly lenient. Balancing love, both tender and tough, is a difficult art. To help us dive deeper into this parental task, we welcome Dr. Leonard Sax to HeightsCast. In the episode, Dr. Sax discusses his book, The Collapse of Parenting: How We Hurt Our Kids When We Treat Them Like Grown-Ups. Drawing both from the wisdom of the ancients and the insights of modern science, Dr. Sax explains the importance of parental authority in raising children. Besides discussing parenting authority, he also offers thoughts on the importance of culture and schools, urging parents to consider carefully and choose prudently the school to which they will send their children. As Dr. Sax reminds us, authentic freedom is not mere license, and if children are to be free in the end, they must, at the start, have the right amount of parental guidance. To give too much freedom too soon may end in the very loss of the freedom which one would have hoped to give. Your shadow has its own intelligence. The shadow is the psychological energy that's working against you to shut off the pathways towards your goals, aims, and the changes and the love that you want. We need to invite in the intelligence to work with us, to build a relationship with it so it's not working against us but with us. And when we start to do that, we start to expand consciously and create sovereignty internally. - Connor Beaton Are You Stressed Out Lately? Power Quotes From The Show The Shadow Of The Father Wound "We often get caught demonizing our father and get stuck in his shadow. We become a judge of our father and we sit in a righteous seat when we're hurt and say “this is how my dad should have parented me.” As if we have any context for his life and what he was going through." - Connor Beaton Understanding Your Own Darkness “There's merit in understanding your own darkness because your darkness is still you, a part of who you are. When you start to turn towards your fears, your insecurities, and your doubts, there's a chance you'll be able to not only understand those parts of you but also welcome them back in your kingdom.” - Connor Beaton Move Through Conflict With Your Partner "If you can find somebody that's along for the ride with you that you respect enough to move through conflict with, you're much more likely to show up in a respectful way to prioritize figuring out what's happening within you as a man. Over the next few years, he learned to take his trauma, shame, and denial—all the shadowy parts of himself—and integrate them. He spent thousands of hours learning and training. Hello everybody and welcome on the Health Upgrade PodcastIn today's episode, we have the pleasure of talking with Dr. Marie-Eve Tremblay from University of Victoria. She is Associate Professor, Canada Research Chair (Tier II) of Neurobiology of Aging and Cognition Dr. Tremblay's research focuses on aging and cognition, using both animal and human brain models to explore the significance of microglial remodeling of neuronal circuits and elimination of synapses in the pathogenesis of brain disorders. In this interview we focus on microglial cell function, and we dig into her amazing research and findings in neurodevelopment, to understand how the microglia plays such an important role in the development and the function of our brains, spinal cord and all the central nervous system. Microglia are really important for maintaining the quality of our brain environment and the formation of the different cells. They perform this quality check so whenever something goes wrong, they have to intervene at the earliest signs of homeostatic disturbance. We will also talk about some of the neurodegenerative conditions & diseases, how they function and how microglial cells play a role there. There are millions of YouTube videos with people crinkling bubble wrap or whispering about folding laundry. Our guest talks about why autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) makes her, and many others, feel more calm and happy. Episode summary: Melinda still remembers the tingling feeling she felt when she first listened to the close-up sound of someone drawing on a TV show at the age of ten. She learned later that the subtle sounds that create soothing sensations for her are called autonomous sensory meridian response, or ASMR. Now, she creates ASMR experiences on her YouTube channel and through her live production company, Whisperlodge — from delicately handling a plastic package to gently stroking a microphone with a makeup brush. In today's show, Melinda demystifies the world of ASMR and how it brings both calm and delight to her and her participants. Later, we hear about the emerging science behind ASMR from Dr. Giulia Poerio, who studies it in her lab at the University of Essex. As it turns out, those tingles might actually benefit our mental health. Today's Science of Happiness Guests: Melinda Lauw, is the co-creator of Whisperlodge, an immersive ASMR theater experience. Far from preparing them for fulfilling relationships, viewing an endless stream of porn videos led to unexpected symptoms. Perhaps most surprisingly, for the first time in history erectile dysfunction was becoming a significant problem for young men.

Dr. Deirdre Tobias joins us to talk about the relationship between diet, obesity, and health, with a focus on the role of processed foods. Dr. Tobias is an epidemiologist who specializes in nutrition, obesity, and methods. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. This episode explores the following questions: - What are (ultra) processed foods? - What do we know about the link between food processing and obesity and related diseases? What do we not yet understand? - What are the limitations of the "whole is good and processed is bad" food rule? - How can we translate nutrition science into actionable advice for the public? Drs. Tobias and Davis also share practical tips for how they shop and prepare foods for their families in a way that leverages the advantages of processed foods while ensuring high nutritional value. This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Athletic Greens, and Rupa Health. What if I told you we'll reach a point in time where scientific breakthroughs will extend our lives by more than a year, for every year we are alive? This is called longevity escape velocity, and some experts think it's only 12 to 15 years away. Of course, getting to that point is multidimensional. It means addressing health from all angles, with personal lifestyle choices, technology, and more. On today's episode, I'm excited to talk to Peter Diamandis about the future of longevity interventions and why we won't always have the same idea of aging that we do today. Peter Diamandis is the founder and executive chairman of the XPRIZE Foundation, which leads the world in designing and operating large-scale incentive competitions. He was recently named by Fortune as one of the “World's 50 Greatest Leaders.” He is also the executive founder of Singularity University, a graduate-level Silicon Valley institution that counsels the world's leaders on exponentially growing technologies. “Trucks are for boys and dolls are for girls.” Our ideas around femininity and masculinity have significantly evolved in recent generations, but there is still lots of room for growth. Today's guest argues that understanding the differences between genders — specifically, the ways in which girl brains differ from boy brains — can actually break down those gender stereotypes. Dr. Leonard Sax is a physician and psychologist, as well as the author of Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know about the Emerging Science of Sex Differences, where he discusses key differences in how boys' and girls' brains are wired, including differences that show up even when the baby is in the mother's womb. Key Takeaways: [2:02] How are gender differences relevant to parents of babies and toddlers? [2:50] Girls' brains develop much earlier than boys'. [3:54] Leonard Sax explains differences in the visual and auditory systems among boys and girls. [10:15] How do auditory differences play out in the home with toddlers? [13:33] Leonard makes a connection between boys' auditory needs and ADD diagnoses. [14:33] The acceleration of the academic curriculum and the correlation to ADD and ADHD diagnoses. [16:48] Leonard claims American doctors are more inclined to prescribe medication as the first resource. [17:46] Leonard talks about varying rates of brain development among boys and girls and how parents should approach this matter. [18:31] Every child is unique and is a mixture of masculine and feminine. [19:20] The most important factor in raising a happy child, according to Dr. Leonard Sax. Devin McDermott is a porn recovery coach and author of the e-book, Cheap Dopamine. Devin was once a porn user and dopamine addict himself. Despite having massive ambitions to become successful, Devin found himself struggling to get his desired results. He soon discovered how porn and supernormal stimuli held him back and made it his number one goal to cut porn and reclaim his life. After freeing himself from the chains of dopamine addiction, Devin wrote Cheap Dopamine to guide others to greater focus, drive, and self-confidence in a distracting world. Devin joins me today to discuss the neuroscience of porn. He describes his life before he quit porn and explains how a chronic health condition led him to be addicted to porn and video games. He defines what “cheap dopamine” is and how it makes the brain desensitized and unmotivated. He also underscores the role of mindful awareness in quitting porn and highlights how our environment can impact our relationship with addictive substances. “Porn is typically a means to run away from negative emotions. For years, construction has measured safety in much the same way: By counting the number of injuries. But with total costs of fatal and nonfatal injuries topping $11 billion annually, that’s clearly not working. Listen now as Brad Tabone speaks with Matt Hallowell, Executive Director of the Construction Safety Research Alliance (CSRA) and Professor of Construction Engineering, University of Colorado Boulder, as they discuss how new research is shattering traditional safety models — and lays a path for future construction safety measurement that’s based on observation rather than outcomes.Learn more about CSRA (https://www.colorado.edu/lab/csra/knowledge-center) and the Safety Classification and Learning (SCL) Model (https://tinyurl.com/4f8lep6t).
Reach out to me for help here: https://www.energy4life.com/p/lizhennessy Many of these studies are covered and discussed in the book The Emerging Science of Water, by Professors Voeikov Vladimir and Konstantin Korotkov. Other studies listed and referenced in major journals in the book laid out studies showing: Exposure of Dugesia tigrina planarians (flatworm) to a combined magnetic field increased the intensity of their motor activity. We shouldn’t be surprised by this – there are over 5,000 papers on PubMed confirming the impact of electromagnetism on biology, the key in this paper is that water treated with a magnetic field transferred this effect to untreated planarians. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1134/S0006350910040081 The use of magnetic water for three months resulted in a statistically significant reduction in dental plaque by 44% in a group of volunteers in comparison with a control group https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1600-051X.1998.tb02447.x A permanent magnet installed on a pipe through which flowed water for chicken feed had a significant effects on chicks. SUMMARY Dr. Leonard Sax, a premier child psychologist, peels back the veneer of successful families in his latest bestseller The Collapse of Parenting: How We Hurt Our Kids When We Treat Them Like Grown-Ups. Originally intending to contrast American parents with those outside the U.S., Sax explains how and why bonds across generations have been broken. Today, American parents are confused about their role, resulting in status insecurity. Having traveled and lectured frequently throughout Germany, Scotland, German-speaking Switzerland, and New Zealand, Dr. Sax extols the virtues of these foreign countries where the culture still supports strong families and parent-child bonds. American kids used to spend their weekends hanging out with grownups, being mentored, and learning values and skills. Now, they are now much less creative than they were 20 years ago and far more likely to be diagnosed with mental illness such as ADHD, anxiety, and depression. Dr. Sax sends a clarion call to parents to renew their relationship with their children by asserting themselves as authority figures. He gives us a vision for how to better prepare our children to thrive. Parenting, after all, is for teaching children what matters not only now but in the future. PARENTING IDEAS FOR BUILDING STRONG FAMILIES Having family dinners together Limiting social media and access to devices, especially in the car and in the bedroom Spending time together Helping kids connect with more adults Controlling the number of extracurricular activities Vacationing as a family without friends Teaching humility by showing interest in other people Assigning chores to children Installing parental monitoring apps Talking and listening Prioritizing character over grades QUOTES FROM SAX “The job of the parent is to teach self-control. To explain what is and is not acceptable. To establish boundaries and enforce consequences.” “Kids need to value their parents’ opinion as their first scale of value, at least throughout childhood and adolescence.” “There is one inescapable truth: you must teach by example…To become a better parent, you must become a better person.” BUY The Collapse of Parenting: How We Hurt Our Kids When We Treat Them Like Grown-Ups RECOMMENDATIONS Watch Andy Griffith episode “Opie, the Birdman” BUY Gidget: The Complete Series Read or watch To Kill a MockingbirdBUY To Kill a Mockingbird (Harperperennial Modern Classics) BUY To Kill a Mockingbird 50th Anniversary Edition OTHER BOOKS BY DR. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the most active period of neurologic development occurs in the first 1,000 days of life. For the first time, the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans will consider neurocognitive health and development through all life stages as well as comprehensive dietary guidance for women during pregnancy and infants and toddlers under 2 years of age. As the body of science grows, the critical nature of key nutrients during the first 1,000 days will become an area of increasing importance for health professionals to address. However, despite this exciting momentum, research reveals a concerning knowledge gap amongst key practitioners, obstetricians, and pediatricians as well as mothers when it comes to key nutrients such as choline and lutein. The objective of this podcast is to explore the cutting-edge science on diet and neurocognition for the first 1,000 and address opportunities for education amongst health professionals and relevant patient populations. You can find CBD everywhere from grocery stores and farmer's markets to boutique CBD stores. All promising pain reduction, reversal of anxiety, better sleep and balancing the overall nervous system as just some of its benefits. With its growing cult following and acceptance as "safe" research is slow to catch up. A recent study showed that taking CBD in doses suggested by one pharmaceutical CBD-based anti-seizure drug, Epidiolex, damages the liver after just a single dose. Dr. Andry has positioned himself on the bleeding edge of CBD research, speaking and educating all over the country. We discuss this and other emerging research about CBD on todays interview.

What a pleasure to sit down with Dr. Jari Laukkanen on this early June 2019 afternoon in Jyväskylä , a city and municipality in Finland in the western part of the Finnish Lakeland, some 130 km north-east from Tampere. You may not know his name, but as a fellow sauna enthusiast, I guarantee that you know of his work, especially if you have read about the reported sauna health benefits in the New York Times, Time Magazine, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, NPR, and pretty much every area of broadcast media in the past year or so. Sauna is a centuries old tradition from Finland, where people are known for being humble and quiet and low profile, How fitting is it that the person perhaps most responsible for the sudden explosive interest in sauna is equally humble, quiet and low profile? This is Dr. Jari Laukkanen. He seems less comfortable with the limelight, but very comfortable channeling his expertise as a Cardiologist towards sauna research, to help qualify and understand what we sauna enthusiasts know to be true: Sauna is good for you. As you will hear shortly into our interview, Dr. Laukkanen warmed up to Glenn at Saunatimes, who traveled 5,000 miles for this interview. Saunatimes Glenn and Sauna researcher Dr. Jari Laukkanen Glenn and Dr. Laukkanen had arranged for a phone interview back when the study results were first announced, but both agreed to wait until a more expanded interview, in person, could be arranged. This Sauna Talk episode is that interview. Whereas many of the hundreds of journalists who have interviewed Dr. Laukkanen may have been after a couple quotes and sound bites, Glenn wanted Sauna Talk listeners to fully understand the context of what sauna means to Dr. Laukkanen, personally. Also, he wanted listeners to get an accurate context of what the practice of sauna is for the 2,800 people who participated in the study he and his team conducted. Why? The results of Dr. Jari Laukkanen’s work has, unfortunately, been used by marketers of products and methods different from what we know as AUTHENTIC sauna. It’s not fair. But we have to tread lightly here. This is our opportunity to share what we know to be true. Authentic sauna is good for you. In Finland, there is no need to put the word “authentic” in front of the word sauna. Today, here in the United States, and many other parts of the world, unfortunately, we need to. Yet, there is great news on the horizon. Those that have listened to the Sauna Talk interview with Risto Elomaa, International Sauna Association President, know that in Germany, it is illegal to refer to infrared cabins as a sauna. God love the Germans! For those not able to listen to this episode of Sauna Talk, here is are some excerpts from our time together: How old were you when you took your first sauna? “A very small child.” The development of the study. This was a long term study. Base line examination. Clinical. Blood samples, including a long questionnaire to establish baseline. 2,800 people at baseline. In 2001, women were included within this population. The main picture Summary of the sauna study results: Sauna frequency is inversely related to health outcomes. If you use more sauna, you have lower risk of stroke, hypertension, and even cardiovascular death. You have a lower risk of death of these events if you use sauna regularly. Three important parts (to living a good life) are: Diet Exercise Sauna Now we have something else: We want more relaxing ways in our lives. Our working lives are so busy nowadays. Sauna is nice, it is kind, it is funny, and it can be also healthy. They are linked very closely together in body and mind. In Finland, sauna is part of our life Everyone is using sauna. Temperatures: 80 – 90 c.. Water is introduced on the hot rocks which can change the humidity. Very good ventilation in sauna. Most of them cool down outside. This is part of the sauna habits. Sauna is a complete experience A study of 100 people, detailed study of before heart rate variably, an indicator of cardiac anomic function and stress level, increased. Your body is relaxing after sauna. We have focused our research on a typical Finnish sauna. None of the people in the study used infrared cabins. From the study of 2,800 people, a speculation on how many were using wood sauna vs. electric sauna, Jari estimates 20-30% of the people in the study use the wood fired sauna. Goals for the future Heat shock proteins are an interesting area for more study. Same with brown fat We’d like to see more long term studies. Changes: are they long lasting. We need more studies about sauna. “I appreciate international collaboration. Without funding it is impossible.” Jari is very interested in studies in places where sauna is not popular because we have access to a control group who does not use sauna. This is important for the health of humanity. New studies can be done with collaboration. If we want to improve health in general, we need wide collaboration research work. Now we have protocols of studies. Different genetic backgrounds are important. Measure what happens in our mind. Sleep habits, measuring heart rate and heart rate variability. Lower risk of hypertension. Lower blood pressure. “I am always happy to talk sauna. It is a good thing in our life.” What is most misunderstood about sauna? “Sauna is a very safe place. Even if you have stable diseases, sauna is good.” You can keep peace in sauna. Our lives our quite busy. We have to relax after busy working days. The Emerging Science of Sauna is upon us. Thanks to the work of Dr. Jari Laukkanen and his collaborators, we are on the cusp of some impactful and expansive studies and research regarding sauna health benefits. Please read more about Dr. Jari Laukkanen here. This is a just published article, thanks to Sally McGrane, a Berlin based journalist. As you will hear in this interview, the simple question of “If you could bring a mobile sauna anywhere in the World and sauna” has brought an intention for Jari to collaborate with our team here in Minnesota, USA for an extensive and expansive sauna study, and the birth of the Sauna Research Center. We have 10,000 euros already secured to “turn the lights on” to start our work. We are in the process of securing more funding to build a new comprehensive study on sauna and health. Perhaps 100,000 euros is a more realistic figure, and yet including detailed biomarker and epigenetic testing, the funding budget will be higher. This will allow us to include a large enough population, provide appropriate sauna protocols, a long enough study duration, and detailed testing before, during, and after the study. Since the recording of this interview, Dr. Laukkanen and the USA team have been building the budget and protocols, as well as initiating University and private partner collaborations. The World of sauna studies is on the cusp of becoming an international, intercontinental collaboration! Interested in helping out with this project? Please email Glenn@saunatimes.com and type in the subject heading: “I am interested in sauna studies.”

Gary Wilson's talk, "The Great Porn Experiment" has changed lives of many men and has brought into attention some of the underlying challenges of our modern world. With erectile dysfunction rates skyrocketing in men under age 40, it was about time we started to look at the science and evidence behind these scary numbers. What's fascinating is how there is overlap in various addictive patterns and at Ketogeek we wanted to better understand how the brain works while potentially interpolating the findings into other lifestyle choices and addictive activities. Bio: Gary Wilson is author of Your Brain on Porn: Internet Pornography and the Emerging Science of Addiction and presenter of the popular TEDx talk ‘The Great Porn Experiment,’ which has been viewed more than 9 million times, and translated into 18 languages. He hosts the website ‘Your Brain On Porn’, which was created for those seeking to understand and reverse compulsive porn use: http://yourbrainonporn.com. He taught anatomy and physiology for years and has long been interested in the neurochemistry of addiction, mating and bonding.
