ABOUT THE EPISODE:This week I'm bringing back an episode from 2020 that is just as relevant today as it was then. The episode covers ten hard truths parents need to face when you recognize potential substance use, or if you know you're dealing with an addiction. It's a great episode for those who are new to the experience of having your child dabble in or become dependent on substances, and there are also truths that apply to the seasoned parent who's been at this for a while. This is a straight-forward, lay-it-all-out-there episode that I hope will bring a sense of urgency if you've been floundering with what to do, and encourage you to share it with a friend if someone you know is in the early stages of, “what do I do!?” with their child or children.EPISODE RESOURCES:Download the show PDF resource doc hereThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereFind us on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Why a Design System Is Your UX Superpower

In the last lesson, I talked about the four types of UX resources that can help you scale your influence across the organization. This time, we're going to zero in on one of the most powerful tools at your disposal: the design system. If you want to move from being an implementer to a UX leader, someone who empowers others to create better experiences, a good design system is your best ally. It makes user-centered design easier for everyone else. That, in turn, frees you up to focus on the bigger picture.Let's talk about why that matters and what makes a design system truly useful. Why Design Systems Matter (Even if You Think You've Got One)I'm not just talking about a Figma file with some buttons and colors. I mean a real design system. One that's robust, well-documented, and tightly integrated with your development process.Because, people across your organization need to visualize, prototype, and test ideas quickly. If they're constantly reinventing layouts or relying on you to build everything, you become the bottleneck. A good design system short-circuits that by giving them the building blocks to create user-friendly interfaces without needing to be UX experts. That helps in several ways:Speed: Reusable components make it faster to go from idea to mockupConsistency: Interfaces follow the same design logic, reducing confusion and frictionScalability: Teams don't need to wait on you to build every screenBuilt-in best practice: Accessibility and UI standards are baked inBut for any of that to work, you've got to go beyond just handing over a Figma file. What Makes a Design System Effective? It's easy to underestimate what goes into a good design system. But if you want others to use it correctly and confidently, it needs to tick a few critical boxes.Clear DocumentationThink brand guidelines, but for components. Your team needs to know how and when to use each item. That includes the "dos and don'ts" and examples of what not to do. Misusing components is common. Like placing white text on pale backgrounds or combining elements in awkward ways. A few screenshots can save a lot of confusion.Developer-Friendly IntegrationDesign systems shouldn't just work for designers. Developers need to be able to take what they see in Figma and translate it into code. That means making component names and logic consistent between tools. Ideally, it also includes code snippets they can copy directly.Reusable Code ComponentsIf you've got a design system in Figma but no matching code components in your front-end library, you're only halfway there. Work with engineering to make sure each design element has a reusable, implementable counterpart in code.Modular and MaintainableYour system needs to grow with your organization. Whether you're rebranding or adding new features, your design system should make updates easier, not harder. Modular components help with that and make it easier to iterate as standards evolve.Governance and Ongoing OwnershipThis isn't a "set and forget" resource. A design system needs love and maintenance. Set up lightweight processes for reviewing and updating it regularly. That might mean assigning someone ownership or scheduling a quarterly design system review. You Don't Need to Build It All at OnceA solid design system is a powerful investment. But it doesn't need to be perfect or comprehensive from day one. Start small. Pick a few high-use components like buttons, form fields, and modals, and document those well. Build from there as your needs and capacity allow. The important part is getting something usable into people's hands as early as possible.Your Action StepStart by taking inventory. What components or styles are you re-creating over and over again? Could you package those into a starter design system for others to use?Next time, we'll talk about the tools you can provide that make research, testing, and prototyping much easier for your colleagues.

In this episode of The Catholic Man Show, hosts Adam Minihan and David Niles welcome Michael Knowles, conservative commentator and host of The Michael Knowles Show, to discuss the critical role of language in shaping truth, culture, and faith. Drawing from philosophy, theology, and literature, Knowles explores how the corruption of language distorts our perception of reality, the dangers of slogans and propaganda, and the rebellious power of silence in a distracted world. From Dante's view of fraud to the importance of interpreting the “signs of the times,” this episode is a thought-provoking call to reclaim language for truth and virtue.Key Discussion Points:Language as a Lens for Truth: Knowles explains that language is not a neutral tool but shapes how we perceive the world. Misusing it, such as through euphemisms like “undocumented American” instead of “illegal alien,” can obscure truth and manipulate thought.Euphemisms and Lies: While polite euphemisms (e.g., “woman of a certain age”) can be charitable, dishonest ones cross into lying, undermining civil discourse and societal standards. The Battle of Standards: The real fight isn't between free speech and censorship but between competing norms. Knowles critiques free speech absolutism, advocating for standards that reject obscenity and fraud in the public square.Philosophy and Language Degradation: Drawing on Josef Pieper, Knowles notes that denying objective truth turns language into a tool for manipulation, eroding reasoned debate and civil society. The Power of Silence: In a world of constant noise, silence is a rebellious act that allows us to hear God's voice and interpret the “signs of the times,” as Christ urges.Dante and Fraud: Knowles connects Deacon Harrison Garlick's idea of lying as “contraceptive speech” to Dante's Inferno, where fraud, especially betrayal, is among the gravest sins, as it perverts language's purpose of conveying truth.Christian Task of Interpretation: Knowles emphasizes that Christians are called not to “do” but to interpret the world's meaning, aligning actions with truth rather than reconstructing it.Resources:The Catholic Woodworker – Discover heirloom-quality rosaries, including the “Saint Michael the Defender” rosary gifted to Michael Knowles.Check out The Michael Knowles Show on your favorite podcast platform or at dailywire.com.Explore Josef Pieper's works on language and truth, such as Abuse of Language, Abuse of Power.Learn more about Dante's Inferno for insights into the moral weight of fraud and betrayal.

If you've ever heard someone say “I'm raising a polarized range on the flop” and thought wait, that doesn't quite make sense — you're not alone. In this episode of the Red Chip Poker Podcast, Coach W34z3l introduces a new term you'll want to add to your poker vocabulary: pseudo polarization. While traditional polarized ranges make perfect sense on the river—where you're typically betting either your strongest value hands or your weakest bluffs—the same logic falls apart when you try to apply it to early street play. That's where pseudo polarization comes in. It describes the kind of range composition you see in flop and turn solver outputs: some strong draws, some mid-strength hands, and a mix of weak bluffs that don't quite fit the classic definition of polarization. This is a deeper, theory-focused episode that will challenge the way you think about bluff combos, equity distribution, and the limits of GTO shortcut terms like “polarized.” You'll walk away with a clearer understanding of: Why solvers raise mid-strength hands that wouldn't be in a true polarized range The dangers of blindly following bluff/value combo ratios like 70/30 How to build flop-raising ranges that can't be exploited—even if they don't look “polarized” in the traditional sense Whether you're studying solver output or just trying to speak more precisely about your strategy, this episode will help you move beyond vague buzzwords and into real conceptual clarity. **LINKS** · GTO Gems 2: https://redchippoker.com/gto-gems-2-book · CORE Poker Course: https://redchippoker.com/launch-core **JOIN US ON DISCORD** Join us on Discord today: https://redchippoker.com/discord

What Narcissism Isn't: Clearing Up the Confusion

In this Weekly Insight, Dr. Ettensohn addresses widespread misconceptions about narcissism by clarifying what the term does not mean. Drawing on clinical examples and years of engagement with public discourse, he explores how the label “narcissist” has become a cultural catch-all for behaviors that are often common, non-pathological, and only proximally related to Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). This episode examines how actions such as setting a boundary, avoiding emotional intimacy, or disagreeing with someone's interpretation of events are frequently misread as narcissistic - especially when filtered through shame, hurt, or interpersonal conflict. Dr. Ettensohn distinguishes these behaviors from the psychological structure of narcissism, which involves instability in self-esteem regulation and associated interpersonal strategies. He also addresses the growing tendency to conflate narcissism with abuse, control, gaslighting, or moral failure, arguing that these associations undermine both clinical clarity and compassion. Misusing the term “narcissism” can lead to stigmatization, inhibit treatment-seeking, and reinforce rigid victim-abuser narratives that obscure the mutual complexity of relational harm. This Weekly Insight is a call for greater nuance, clinical integrity, and psychological humility. By understanding what narcissism isn't, we create more space to see what it is, and how it might be worked with more constructively in both cultural discourse and clinical care.  Purchase Unmasking Narcissism: A Guide to Understanding the Narcissist in Your Life here: https://amzn.to/3nG9FgH LISTEN ON APPLE PODCASTS: https://rb.gy/cklpum LISTEN ON GOOGLE PODCASTS: https://rb.gy/fotpca LISTEN ON AMAZON MUSIC: https://rb.gy/g4yzh8 VISIT THE WEBSITE: https://www.healnpd.org

Study Passage: James 5:1-6Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. 4 Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5 You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.

SD Worx Ireland, a leading payroll and HR solutions provider, has announced the results of its latest survey which reveals one in five (21%) employees in Ireland confess to misusing leave policies and taking absences without a valid reason. However, 40% claim their team is experiencing issues related to employee absenteeism - suggesting employees are not owning up to it, or their colleagues are overly suspicious. The independent study was carried out by iVOX on behalf of SD Worx and surveyed 1,000 employees in Ireland to gain insights into the current job market and the concerns amongst today's workforces. Additionally, it exposes some common grievances among employees in Ireland and found that almost half (49%) feel they are underpaid for the work that they do. It also suggests that employees are feeling overworked, with 46% saying that their team is facing staff shortages and struggling to keep up with their current workload. This increases to nearly half (48%) of employees who expect their team to face worsening talent shortages over the coming years. Compounding these challenges, 43% of employees believe their team's skills gap cannot be easily filled. Despite this, 44% say they are strict with their workloads and schedules, solely focusing on what is necessary and not working overtime. Amidst these rising pressures, the survey found that 44% of employees in Ireland are currently looking for a new job, but 60% of those surveyed admit that it is difficult to find a job within the labour market right now. However, 63% of employees are motivated and passionate about their work, while 62% say that they would recommend their organisation to a friend looking for a job. Eimear Byrne, Country Leader, SD Worx Ireland, said: "This research highlights a growing sense of dissatisfaction among Ireland's workforce. With 39% of respondents saying their manager struggles with effective leadership, it's clear that many employees feel they're lacking valuable guidance and mentorship. As a result, we are now seeing a knock-on effect with more people actively seeking to change jobs and widespread concerns about staff shortages, as well as underpayment. This comes as the EU Pay Transparency Directive is due to be transposed into Irish law in June 2026 - if done right, this could be an opportunity to alleviate employees' pay concerns and help to build trust. "Ireland is at full employment and organisations are facing a critical need to re-evaluate how they engage and support employees. The changing economic landscape is making businesses more conservative and they are under increased pressure to keep operations running smoothly, while trying to retain talent. With skills shortages and rising absenteeism in the mix, it's becoming harder to strike that balance. Now is the time to invest in people strategies and provide employees with the support, development opportunities, and workplace culture they need to thrive. This will allow businesses to secure and retain top tier talent while also building more resilient and engaged workforces for the future." See more stories here.

There have been some extreme overvaluations in this market and we are here to discuss them! Today we take a deep dive on market valuations and the relativity of valuation metrics, making sure you avoid the simplistic comparisons. We also examine market sentiment, noting the unusual dynamic of bearish sentiment despite record highs, and highlighted risks such as market concentration in major tech firms and declining free cash flows. We also talk about whether AI investments are currently yielding meaningful returns and exploring the broader implications for equity markets.  We discuss: The stock market valuations and their relative meaning. How comparing valuation metrics across different companies and countries requires careful consideration. High-growth companies can justify higher price-to-earnings (PE) ratios. Misusing metrics or using the wrong comparisons can lead to poor investment decisions. Market sentiment is currently bearish despite record-high stock prices. Diversification and risk management strategies can help investors navigate uncertainty. Some analysts question whether AI investments are currently yielding profitable returns. Free cash flow declines across the S&P 500 could impact market stability. US market resilience and innovation could still provide competitive investment opportunities despite global shifts. Potential policy changes could pressure the US dollar and influence international economic positioning. High valuations, market concentration, and potential free cash flow challenges suggest investors should exercise caution. Historic S&P 500 returns have been inconsistent, with long-term averages fluctuating significantly over different time periods. Omission of key historical data, such as the 1980s in certain charts, highlights potential biases in market analysis. Investors should focus on diversification, liquidity, and value-driven strategies to navigate potential market corrections. The S&P 500 is currently 72% above its long-term trend line, a historically high level. Market history suggests a strong correlation between extreme overvaluation and major pullbacks. Many investors make emotional decisions rather than objectively adapting to new data. Legendary investors like Warren Buffett hold cash and wait for market corrections to deploy capital. Market sentiment is highly bearish, but history shows markets can stay irrational longer than expected. Avoiding the worst market days has historically been more impactful than catching the best ones.   For more information, visit the show notes at https://moneytreepodcast.com/extreme-overvaluations-689  Today's Panelists: Kirk Chisholm | Innovative Wealth Douglas Heagren | ProCollege Planners Follow on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/moneytreepodcast Follow LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/money-tree-investing-podcast Follow on Twitter/X: https://x.com/MTIPodcast

As the holiday season approaches, the pressure to shed extra pounds intensifies. Many are turning to trendy weight loss solutions like GLP-1 inhibitors—such as Ozempic and Wegovy—hoping for rapid results. But at what cost? While these medications have gained popularity for their effectiveness, experts warn that they come with hidden risks that could compromise long-term health. With nearly 100 million Americans struggling with obesity, GLP-1 inhibitors seem like a quick fix. However, could this shortcut to weight loss be trading pounds for health problems? Let's explore the lesser-known dangers of these medications and how you can protect your well-being.The Silent Dangers of GLP-1 Inhibitors—and How to Mitigate Them1. Gastrointestinal Issues: More Than Just an Upset StomachWhy It Matters: Many dismiss nausea or vomiting as minor inconveniences. But did you know these symptoms could point to something much more severe? The Risk: GLP-1 drugs can lead to gastroparesis—a condition where the stomach doesn't empty properly. This can result in chronic digestive issues that might become irreversible. What You Can Do:Start Slow: Doctors should begin with the lowest possible dose, increasing gradually while monitoring for symptoms.Stay Hydrated and Eat Fiber: Patients can manage mild gastrointestinal issues by staying hydrated and incorporating a fiber-rich diet.2. Accelerated Muscle Loss: The Hidden Weight Loss ConcernWhy It Matters: Weight loss isn't always equal. Losing muscle mass, not just fat, can slow down metabolism, increase frailty, and make long-term weight maintenance harder. The Risk: Muscle loss linked to GLP-1 drugs can make daily activities a struggle, especially for older adults. What You Can Do:Exercise Matters: Weight-bearing exercises can help, though not everyone can stick with them.Consider Fortetropin: This natural bioactive compound from fertilized egg yolk has shown promising results. A recent study by the University of California, Berkeley revealed an 18% increase in muscle protein synthesis in adults aged 66—even without exercise. Available exclusively through healthcare practitioner lines like MYOS MD, Fortetropin could be a valuable addition to your weight loss plan.3. Off-Label Misuse: When Weight Loss Becomes RiskyWhy It Matters: GLP-1 inhibitors are meant for specific medical conditions. Misusing them for quick cosmetic fixes can backfire. The Risk: Rebound weight gain is common after stopping these drugs. Worse, the regained weight often comes back as fat, not muscle, leading to an even higher fat-to-muscle ratio than before. What You Can Do:Understand the Risks: Patients should fully comprehend the intended use of GLP-1 drugs and the consequences of off-label use.Prioritize Lifestyle Changes: Balanced nutrition and regular exercise remain the most sustainable solutions for long-term weight management.4. Mental Health Side Effects: The Emotional Toll of GLP-1 DrugsWhy It Matters: Mental health often takes a backseat in weight loss journeys, but psychological well-being is crucial for long-term success. The Risk: Users have reported mood swings and heightened anxiety. Experts believe these drugs might be affecting the brain's reward system in unexpected—and dangerous—ways. What You Can Do:Stay Connected: Open conversations with healthcare providers about mental health symptoms are vital.Seek Support: Incorporate stress-reducing activities like mindfulness, yoga, or counseling into your routine to manage mood and anxiety. The Bottom Line: Balancing Weight Loss and Overall HealthWhile GLP-1 inhibitors offer promising weight loss benefits, they are not without risks. From digestive complications to muscle loss and mental health challenges, the potential downsides warrant careful consideration. Before turning to medications like Ozempic or Wegovy, focus on sustainable lifestyle changes. If these drugs are part of your weight loss journey, work closely with healthcare professionals to monitor for potential issues and incorporate supportive measures like Fortetropin, exercise, and mental health care.Weight loss should enhance your life, not complicate it. The second article presents John Brown as a Christian Nationalist. In both cases, Lou objects to the misuse of John Brown, showing how inaccurate these appropriations tend to be. Links to the articles, fyi:Will Shetterly, "What you say about Luigi Mangione is what you would've said about John Brown," Medium (Dec. 14, 2024).Shiv Parihar, "John Brown, Christian Nationalist," Providence Magazine (Dec. 13, 2024). Theme music: "Land of My Fathers" by The 126ers (YouTube)

Sophia contrasts Budde's statements with Scripture, including Genesis 1:27 and Romans 1:18-32, emphasizing God's perfect design and the need for Christians to lovingly speak truth.Listen as Sophia explores the broader implications of conflating biblical issues with political ideologies, and challenges believers to stand firm on God's Word—even in a culture that seeks to distort it. magine gripping an Olympic barbell, its cold steel pressing into your palms. Now, with every word you speak, imagine spotters steadily adding weight—one pound at a time. Each phrase makes the bar pounds heavier until it becomes unbearable. That's the kind of weight spiritual leadership carries. This devotional is about 1100 words long. Just imagine trying to deadlift that—not a chance, right? That would be an record, If I were able to lift it. And yet, that's the reality of teaching God's truth. In James 3:1-2, we're reminded that those who teach will be judged with greater strictness. So, how do we step up to the bar without being crushed? Let's dig into that together. Welcome to the Daily Devo. Our text today is James 3:1-2. Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. — James 3:1-2 James opens this chapter with a warning: not everyone should aspire to be a teacher. And what is his reason? Teaching God's Word comes with weightier spiritual responsibility and accountability because it carries the power to shape others' faith and lives. Misusing this gift can cause spiritual harm, so James emphasizes the weightier judgment for teachers. And honestly, these verses have always humbled and incited a holy fear in me—which is necessary for the spiritual teacher. Just so you know, I think about this every day as I approach God's Word—if I am rightly handling the weight of the Word. I do my very best to dig deep and let God's Word speak precisely as the original author intended so that I make applications to our lives that are as surgically correct as possible. But even though James warns spiritual teachers about the weight, he also acknowledges a universal truth: we all stumble or struggle to bear the burden of the weight, which reminds teachers and every one of us with a mouth about the weight of our words. For the Disperions of believers James addressed, this was a warning about the dangers of false teaching and spiritual pride. In a time of persecution and fragile church communities, their words mattered deeply. Teachers had to rely on God's truth, not their cleverness or ambition, to guide others rightly. Today, this truth is just as critical. God's Word reveals the way, the truth, and the life. Whether you are teaching it from a pulpit, leading from it in a small group, or mentoring someone one-on-one, the weight of your words about God's Word is real. Here's the key I always try to remember when communicating God's Word: it's not about my ability or strength to carry its weight. When I teach the Word, I rely on the All-Powerful God who spoke it. I let its weight rest on me and then share it with you. In the end, my prayer is that we both entrust our lives to the One who can truly bear that weight—Jesus Christ. Here's the good news: Jesus came to carry the burden we could never bear. He lived the perfect life we couldn't live—He never stumbled in word, action, or thought. And on the cross, He bore the crushing weight of sin for you and me, paying the price so we could be free from its burden. Today, you have the opportunity to let go of that unbearable weight. Jesus invites you with these words: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). You can let go of the barbell. All you need to do is surrender to Him. Confess your need for His grace. Believe in Him as your Savior. And follow Him as your Lord. If you're ready to make that decision, pray this with me: “Jesus, I can't carry this weight anymore. I've stumbled in many ways and need your forgiveness. Thank you for living the perfect life and dying for my sins. I believe you rose again, conquering sin and death. Today, I surrender my life to you. Be my Savior and my Lord. Amen.” If you just prayed this prayer for the first time, welcome to God's family! If you prayed because you needed to let go of some burdens again, praise the Lord! I want to walk alongside you on your discipleship journey. Follow us here daily as we grow together in God's Word and learn to trust Him more deeply. #SpiritualLeadership, #JesusOurStrength, #WordOfGod ASK THIS: How can you better rely on God's strength when teaching or sharing His Word? What burdens do you need to surrender to Jesus today? How have your words impacted others spiritually this week? What steps can you take to ensure your teaching aligns with God's truth? DO THIS: Let Jesus take the weight of the burden. PRAY THIS: Lord, I surrender the weight of my words and my life to You. Help me trust Your strength and speak Your truth faithfully. Amen PLAY THIS: Burdens.

God created men and women with equal value and early Christianity elevated women in a time when women were oppressed. Misusing scripture to dominate or oppress women is a sin, and believers are called to submit to one another out of love for Christ.Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar start this conversation by highlighting an important biblical truth: God created both men and women in His image, giving them equal value. While some who claim Christianity have oppressed women, scripture itself uplifts women. Jesus brought women from the margins to Himself, and throughout the Bible, women are honored, both in the Old and New Testament. Christianity was a driving force in elevating women's equality. The Bible teaches that men and women are co-laborers, equal before God; however, many focus on verses instructing wives to submit to their husbands, missing the broader command to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Submission in marriage, according to scripture, is about mutual care and respect. Husbands are called to sacrificially love their wives, just as Christ loved the church. This does not mean women are lesser. They are helpmates, not subordinates. A true biblical marriage involves mutual support, where men and women complement each other, serving their God-given roles.Christianity has historically elevated women, with Jesus' resurrection being first witnessed by women. While men and women are biologically different, this does not diminish their spiritual or personal equality. The Bible's leadership structure often sparks controversy, particularly regarding the role of women in the church. Scripture designates men as the heads of households and leaders of congregations, not because women are inferior, but because of God's commands that bring harmony when followed. Women are called to teach and lead within appropriate contexts  while men are called to lay down their lives for their wives in love and service. This structure, when followed with love and respect, reflects the unity and harmony intended by God. It calls for a humility that recognizes all people are made in God's image, deserving of dignity and care. The harmony that arises when men and women embrace their God-given roles is a beautiful picture of God's design. Misinterpreting scripture to dominate or oppress women is a serious sin against God's image. Men must treat women with gentleness and respect, understanding that before they are wives, daughters, or mothers, they are first and foremost God's daughters If men have gone astray in this regard, they are called to repent and realign with God's design, honoring the women in their lives as co-heirs of GodSend us a text Thanks for listening!
