While continuing in the book of James of our "Faith & Action" series, today Pastor Ben speaks about a subject that most people don't like to talk about..."money." Now, before you quit reading and tune out, hear me out...this is not one of those tired old "send me your money" teachings that you might hear elsewhere. In fact, today's teaching about money is in reference to the way that the Word of God speaks of it...for it to be used as a tool for God's Glory. If you could speak to Jesus in person, what would He suggest that you do with it? Are you using it for His Glory and Honor? How do you use it to bless others?...OR...Are you hoarding it and making it your idol? Are you using it for the sake of profits and to live in luxury? What is your attitude towards money? * Two very important questions that you should keep in mind: 1. How are you using your wealth? 2. How are you acquiring your wealth? *Reference scriptures: Mark 10:23-25: James 4:15; Acts 18 If you are interested in attending our LIVE teachings (Wednesdays @ 7:00 pm & Sundays @ 10:00 am), you are invited to visit us at 4218 Boston Ave. Lubbock, Texas. This sermon's passage is the harshest warning against the misuse of wealth in all of Scripture. Money is one of the chief, if not the chief, competitor for our affections. It promises security, comfort, enjoyment. So what is the balance of using it while keeping Jesus as our priority and source of satisfaction? Listen and take the challenge.

In today’s passage James dons the mantle of prophet and delivers an oracle of judgment against “the rich” - the cultural ‘haves' who were leveraging their wealth to oppress the cultural ‘have nots’ that are the less fortunate, including many Christians. James delivers a stern warning in which their materialism and gross ambivalence and abuse of others is addressed. But what does this passage have to say to those inside the church? Join us as we explore James’s warning to the wealthy!

Being confronted with the futility of the pursuit of wealth, we’re reminded of our call to steward our money wisely, knowing that we’re living on the brink of eternal life in the new heavens & the new earth.

Message Discussion Guide - 7.26.20 Read James 5:1-3 with your group. · James begins a new section of his letter in which he harshly condemns "you rich" people. He begins by warning them of misery headed their way. Why do you think James issues such a stern warning? · James describes a group of people who have hoarded their wealth. Is James condemning the very possession of wealth? Look at James 1:9-11. · Do you consider yourself wealthy? Why or why not? · Do you agree that money can be dangerous? Read James 5:4-6 with your group. · Now that we’ve read this passage, let’s look at James’ main point. James describes the ways these people have trusted in their wealth and it has led to some serious sin. · Devon said “The reason why money is so dangerous is because it can quickly become the thing we trust most.” Have you ever found yourself putting trust in wealth alone? What happens when that is the case? · What do you think it means that our hearts follow our treasure? · If you are a follower of Jesus, do you think that means we should use our wealthy differently? How so? · If your bank account is the best account, what does it say about you right now? · How does Christ set us free from the worldly way of consumption and hoarding of wealth?

Hope Fellowship Church Nov 11 – 17, 2018 ========== James: Greed / Generosity James is a book of timeless wisdom for practical living. It tackles real issues and struggles, that we will face in life, like temptation, wisdom, self-control, anger, arrogance, suffering, and so much more. James challenges our character and calls us to action directed by our faith. James takes principles and makes them practical. ========== James 5:1-6 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you. This is not about money, it's about Lordship. James 5:1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. 1. The purpose of life is not to retire. When you have your needs met seemingly by your own effort, it’s much harder to trust God. Luke 18:18-24 And a ruler asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.'" And he said, "All these I have kept from my youth." When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, "How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! James 5:4 Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 2. Position should never matter more than People. 1 Timothy 6:6-10 But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. James 5:5-6 You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you. 3. Ultimately people can’t resist you, but God will resist you. How dependent am I on God? Do I really trust Him to provide and take care of me? Have I surrendered my wealth to Him and told Him; do what you want, I want Jesus? James was not a follower of Jesus during His earthly ministry but became a believer after His resurrection. James went on to become the lead pastor of the church in Jerusalem. He was the one who made the deciding speech at the Jerusalem Council (15:13–22), and Paul called James one of the pillars of the church (Galatians 2:9). This morning we are continuing in our study through the Epistle of James and here we come the point where James speaks to how believers ought to handle their wealth. And he does so through the lens of speaking about the condemnation that is coming upon the non-believer for how they have abused their wealth. This should serve as a sober reminder that all that we have belongs to God and when he gifts finances to us, we are entrusted and expected to honor him in how we steward those gifts. Study with us as we see this exhortation from James.
