MY Devotional: Daily Encouragement from Leading The Way

The rich young ruler didn't just have wealth—he trusted it (Matthew 19:16–30). His money gave him a false sense of security and self-sufficiency, convincing him he was in control. In today's episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef shows why Scripture repeatedly warns against that trap and calls believers to live differently. Paul's instruction to Timothy is direct: don't be arrogant, and don't put your hope in wealth “which is so uncertain,” but in God who provides richly (1 Timothy 6:17). Jesus goes even further, urging us to stop stockpiling temporary treasures and instead invest in eternity—because what you treasure reveals what you truly worship (Matthew 6:19–21). Dr. Youssef also exposes the deeper misconception behind the ruler's mindset: thinking salvation can be earned, purchased, or donated into existence. No amount of rule-keeping, good deeds, or financial generosity can reconcile a sinner to God. Jesus makes the point unmistakably: what is impossible with man is possible with God (Matthew 19:26). Only God can change a sinful heart, and only the blood of Jesus can secure forgiveness and eternal life. If you've been tempted to rely on resources, status, or self-effort for security, this devotional will redirect your hope to the only sure foundation: Christ alone. Prayer: God, thank You for sending Your Son to die on the cross for me. Help me to remember to put my hope in You every day, not in my finances. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. “For where you treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Learn more in Dr. Michael A. God announces judgment not only on sin in general but on the very symbols of safety and success the people relied upon—“the altars of Bethel,” whose “horns…shall be cut off and fall to the ground” (v.14). Economic and social comforts are also named, as God says, “I will strike the winter house along with the summer house, and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall come to an end” (v.15). The passage confronts every false refuge and exposes the illusion of security apart from obedience and faithfulness. God dismantles what we trust more than Him.

MY Devotional: Daily Encouragement from Leading The Way

What happens when good gifts—money, success, stability—quietly become your trust? In today's episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef draws from two of Jesus' most sobering teachings about wealth. First, the story of the rich young ruler in Mark 10: a man who wanted to follow Jesus, yet couldn't release his grip on riches. Jesus offered him treasure in heaven, true security, and salvation—but his possessions held his heart so tightly that he walked away sorrowful. Then Dr. Youssef turns to Jesus' parable in Luke 12 of the rich landowner who expanded his barns and planned for a comfortable future—yet failed to plan for eternity. In a single night, everything changed, exposing the danger of living as though this life is all there is. This devotional is a timely reminder that the only refuge that stands in every storm is Jesus Christ. Markets rise and fall. Economies shift. Peace and turmoil come and go. But those who run to Christ are secure—life or death—because in Him, you already have everything you need. Prayer: Father, help me to press on in this life with whatever circumstances You have deemed for my good—whether riches or want—remembering the hope of glory that is mine today. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.  Today's MY Devotional has been provided by Leading The Way. The voice you hear on the MY Devotional podcast is digitally generated with Dr. Youssef's permission. Are you better than those who fell before you? That is the haunting question Nahum puts to Nineveh — and through her, to every nation and every proud heart that refuses to see its own vulnerability. Dr. John brings the book of Nahum to a close, showing how the mightiest empire of the ancient world crumbled under the weight of its own arrogance, and why the words "you also" should give us all pause.God's Patience Exhausted: What happens when a nation exhausts the patience of God? In this series, Dr. John works through the often-overlooked book of Nahum — the sobering sequel to Jonah — tracing the fall of the Assyrian empire and what it reveals about the character of God. A compelling study in divine justice, and a timely one for anyone who has ever presumed on the kindness of God.

Proverbs 18 explores how we navigate relationships, communication, and spiritual maturity. At its core, this chapter confronts the power of our words and the posture of our hearts. It reminds us that isolation runs against God's design. From the beginning, God declared it was not good for humanity to be alone. When we withdraw from community, we often seek only our own desires and resist wise counsel. The chapter contrasts foolish and wise hearts. A fool speaks without listening and has no desire to understand—only to express opinions. The wise person seeks understanding before responding. Proverbs 18 also delivers one of Scripture's most sobering truths: death and life are in the power of the tongue. Words can destroy or restore, divide or unify. In a digital age where words feel disposable, this wisdom calls us to slow down, listen carefully, and speak with intention. True security is not found in wealth or self-sufficiency, but in the Lord, our strong tower. The chapter closes by affirming God's design for companionship, reminding us that we were created for relationship, not isolation.I. Foolish Heart vs. Wise Heart (vv. 1–2)Isolation is unhealthy and unbiblical. It often grows from fear of vulnerability or correction and makes us resistant to counsel. A foolish heart loves talking more than listening, while wisdom requires humility—the ability to admit wrong and seek understanding.II. The Power of Words (vv. 4–8, 20–21)Words can refresh like a bubbling brook or wound deeply. Foolish speech invites conflict, ruins relationships, and spreads gossip that sinks deep into the heart. Our words shape our lives and the lives of others. They can bless or crush, heal or harm—whether spoken aloud or posted online.III. False Security vs. True Refuge (vv. 10–11)The name of the Lord is a strong tower and true refuge. Wealth and success can feel secure but are ultimately fragile. Wise stewardship matters, but our trust must rest in God alone.IV. Pride vs. Humility (v. 12)Pride leads to downfall, while humility prepares the way for honor. A teachable spirit keeps us growing, even in leadership.V. Wisdom in Listening (vv. 13, 15, 17)Answering before listening brings shame. The wise seek knowledge and listen fully, recognizing that the first story heard is not always the full truth.VI. Crushed Spirits & the Need for Healing (vv. 14, 19)A crushed spirit is harder to bear than physical sickness. Careless words can cause deep offense and long-lasting damage. Healing often requires patience, repentance, and intentional reconciliation.VII. God's Design for Companionship (vv. 22, 24)Marriage and deep friendship are gifts from God. Many shallow relationships can still lead to ruin, but one faithful friend brings strength. We were not made for isolation but for committed, godly relationships.Practical ApplicationsResist isolation by committing to honest, regular fellowship.Guard your tongue—ask if your words are true, loving, and necessary.Practice humble listening, especially in conflict.Seek true refuge in prayer and God's Word, not control or wealth.Pursue healing through repentance and patience.Invest in godly companionship, prioritizing marriage and same-gender accountability.Discussion QuestionsWhere are you tempted to isolate, and why?How have words shaped your life—for good or harm?Where do you tend to place your security instead of in the Lord? Are you more likely to speak or listen in conflict? Is reconciliation needed with anyone you've wounded? How can you strengthen your closest relationships this season?

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Today's shout-out goes to Sam Schoeppner from Port Trevorton, PA. Thank you for your partnership with us through Project23. This one's for you. Our text today is Judges 9:42-49. On the following day the people went out into the field, and Abimelech was told. He took his people and divided them into three companies and set an ambush in the fields. And he looked and saw the people coming out of the city, so he rose against them and killed them. Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city, while the two companies rushed upon all who were in the fields and killed them. And Abimelech fought against the city all that day. He captured the city and killed the people who were in it, and he razed the city and sowed it with salt. When all the leaders of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-berith. Abimelech was told that all the leaders of the tower of Shechem were gathered together. And Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a bundle of brushwood and lifted it and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men who were with him, “What you have seen me do, hurry and do as I have done.” So every one of the people cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against the stronghold, and they set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem also died, about 1,000 men and women. — Judges 9:42-49 After Gaal's defeat, Abimelech turns his fury on Shechem. He ambushes their people, tears down their city, salts the ground so nothing will grow, and finally targets the leaders hiding in the tower of El-berith—the temple of their false god Baal-berith. From there, the story takes a chilling turn. Abimelech cuts down brushwood, lights it, and torches the stronghold with a thousand men and women inside. The very tower they trusted for safety becomes their tomb. It's the brutal fulfillment of Jotham's warning: the fire has come, and Shechem burns, and by Abimelech's hand. The tower of Shechem is a haunting picture of false security. When we put our hope in anything other than God—whether money, status, relationships, or our own strength—it will eventually collapse. What feels like a fortress today may be the very place of ruin tomorrow. The people of Shechem thought their temple-tower and false god would protect them. But only the Lord is a strong tower, a refuge that never falls: The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous man runs into it and is safe. — Proverbs 18:10. Every other “tower” is brushwood waiting to burn. Where do you run when life gets hard? Do you run and hide in a tower that can't save you, like money, achievement, reputation, or to the God who always can? If you need safety today, run to God. Nothing else and nothing less. ASK THIS: What “towers” am I tempted to run to for safety when I'm afraid? How do I know if my trust is in God or in false security? Where have I seen the collapse of something I once relied on? What would it look like for me to run to God as my true refuge today? DO THIS: Identify one “tower” you've been leaning on—money, achievement, reputation. Confess it to God, and declare Him as your refuge in prayer today. PRAY THIS: Lord, forgive me for hiding in false towers. You alone are my refuge and my strength—help me to run to You, not to what will burn. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Strong Tower."

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Today's shout-out goes to David Freeman from Palm Coast, FL. Thank you for your partnership with us through Project23. You're helping people everywhere live with authentic faith. This one's for you. Our text today is Mark 10:23-31: And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”— Mark 10:23-31 Jesus speaks a sobering fact: “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God.” Not because riches are wrong. But because riches are deceptive. Wealth, comfort, and success—all can offer an illusion. An illusion of control, security, and self-made power. But these are shadows, not substance. And many of us, even those without great wealth, fall for the same illusions. We often cling to: Titles for identity. Relationships for validation. Savings for security. Performance for peace. And yet, when these things are threatened, we freak out, because what we thought was firm was faulty, what was solid was shifting sand. And Jesus wants to set us free from this illusion. Not to take away our joy, but to free us from the illusion so we can experience the freedom of greater joy. Then Peter exclaims as he beats his chest, “We've left everything for you!” And Jesus reassures his statement, even though he knows his own words will test him. Peter has not left everything because a rooster is yet to crow. He was still clinging to his ideas about Jesus and his security, safety, and significance, which is why Jesus explained again, "The first will be last. And the last will be first." Stop clinging to things that pretend to be saviors. Your status, your stuff, your success—none of them can save you; only Jesus can. Let go of the illusions, and grab hold of what's real. True security is never found in what you secure, but in the One who saves and secures your salvation. #LetGoAndTrust, #FaithOverComfort, #Project23 ASK THIS: What illusion of control are you tempted to believe? Why do comfort and success often feel more trustworthy than faith? Where is God asking you to trust Him more deeply today? What's something you need to release so you can follow Jesus more fully? DO THIS: Identify one illusion you're tempted to trust—then name it in prayer and replace it with faith in Jesus. PRAY THIS: Lord, open my eyes to the things I rely on instead of you. Help me let go of what's false so I can live by true faith. Amen. PLAY THIS: “More Than Anything” by Natalie Grant.

He exposes the emptiness of religious practices that focus on external performance while ignoring the need for true spiritual transformation. Using vivid illustrations and biblical truths, Stephen highlights the danger of being religious but not redeemed. You'll learn why a relationship with Jesus Christ—not religion—is the only path to salvation. This episode is a call to examine your heart, set aside false assurances, and embrace the gospel's life-changing power. Whether you've relied on your works, knowledge, or upbringing, this message will challenge you to pursue a real, saving relationship with Christ. Listen today and discover the difference between religion that condemns and faith that redeems.

Series: Sermon on the Mount Sermon Title: False Security Synopsis: As Jesus concludes His teaching on the mountainside, He speaks of the shock that many people will experience on judgment day. There will be some that thought that they were going to enter into Heaven because of certain beliefs or spiritual practices, but Jesus warns that this is not the criteria for access into eternal life. How can we make sure that we don't approach judgment day with a false sense of security?
