Today's readings.. (Joshua 5,6), (Isaiah 10), (2 Thessalonians 1,2)Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians shows he now has greater confidence in them, in their faith and love, this causes him “to give thanks to God … because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing.” [1 v.3] He commends their “steadfastness and faith in all your persecutions”  [v.4]  We are aware that there are true believers in some countries of whom this can be said today – and this is true of every generation.  As Jesus said in his message to Smyrna, “I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) … Be faithful unto death, and I will give you a crown of life.” [Rev.2 v.9,10]   Let us all be “rich in faith.”Ukraine is much in the news these days – and there are true believers there today and we pray specially for them and for those in Iran  – and we know that Stalin wiped out our community of believers in Ukraine in the 1930s.   We ponder the reference in the 2nd chapter  to a particular “man of lawlessness” and that there will be a “rebellion”.  We see just about everyone, in a sense, rebelling against any meaningful belief in their being a God. The “day of the Lord” then occurs.  The leader of this rebellion is “against every so-called god or object of worship” [v.4]   In a sense the ‘doctrine' of evolution fulfils this, being against any concept of their being a God, a Creator whom humans should worship and serve. Humans are also worshipping money – and Jesus said, no one “can serve two Masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and money.” [Luke 16 v.13]  Nearly everyone is devoted to the things money can buy today. Finally we note Paul's warning that “those who are perishing” will do so because “they refused to love the truth and so be saved.” [v.10]   James wrote [2 v.5], “has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him”  Let us be “rich” in the things our Master approves making sure we truly “love him” and that our “faith is growing abundantly”.

Send us Fan MailThe Bible Project Daily Podcast is an in-depth, daily study of the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Episode Notes: Responding to God's Amazing Grace. (2 Kings 20: 1-21)God's grace is amazing; we even sing about it. But maybe we say that so often that sometimes we forget just how astonishing it really is. The Bible says: “For by grace are you saved through faith… it is the gift of God, not of works.” But consider the backdrop of that verse. What were we really like before we came to Christ?  But in some passages, it describes us as being in enmity with God — not neutral, not mildly indifferent, but opposed to Him. And yet, in that condition, God loved us. And God demonstrated His love by sending His Son to die for our sins so that we could receive eternal life as a gift. That is amazing grace. But that's only the beginning. God's grace doesn't just save us. Grace saves us.Grace strengthens us.Grace sustains us.Exceedingly.Abundantly.Above all, we could ask or even imagine. So, if God pours out grace like that, then how should we respond? There are many possible biblical answers to that question.  But since we're walking through 2 Kings, chapter by chapter, we've now arrived at a moment in Hezekiah's life where God poured out extraordinary grace on him, and then Scripture shows us exactly how he responded.  And tucked inside this story is something every one of us needs to hear. Something about our hearts right now, not just Hezekiah's…..Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. I had a bit of a moment a few weeks ago. I went through the Bible and looked up every single time the word “sin” shows up… and what I found honestly surprised me.Not in a good or bad way – just… not what I was taught.I didn't find the clean, clear list of do's and don'ts I grew up with. I didn't find Jesus obsessing over defining sin or making sure people avoided it at all costs. What I did find—especially in the tradition I was handed – was a whole lot of fear. Fear of messing up. Fear of getting it wrong. Fear of hell. And I can't help but wonder… is fear really the point?Because when Jesus talks about why he came, he says it's about life – full, abundant life. And that doesn't sound like fear to me.So this week, we're going to wade into some deep water. Not to tear anything down—but to see what might be underneath all that fear. To ask what our spiritual lives could actually look like if fear wasn't running the show.If you've ever felt that tension… or quietly wondered if there's more to this than just getting it right… this one might be for you.Join us at the Spiritual Gym this week. Let's explore what it could look like to actually live—abundantly.Donate to Friends ChurchTo donate to this podcast and support the making of more of these please visit https://friendschurch.ca/podcast

In this heartwarming message through the lens of "Elf," Pastor Dave explores how Buddy's journey to find his father mirrors our own spiritual search for identity and belonging. Just as Buddy discovers his true identity, we too are invited into God's family through spiritual adoption. Drawing from Ephesians 1, we learn that God planned our adoption through Jesus Christ from the beginning. This Christmas message reminds us that God's greatest gift isn't just presents under the tree—it's His invitation to become part of His eternal family.Ephesians 1:3-6 How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He's the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in him. Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son. 7-10 Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah, his blood poured out on the altar of the Cross, we're a free people—free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds. And not just barely free, either. Abundantly free! He thought of everything, provided for everything we could possibly need, letting us in on the plans he took such delight in making. He set it all out before us in Christ, a long-range plan in which everything would be brought together and summed up in him, everything in deepest heaven, everything on planet earth.11-12 It's in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.13-14 It's in Christ that you, once you heard the truth and believed it (this Message of your salvation), found yourselves home free—signed, sealed, and delivered by the Holy Spirit. This down payment from God is the first installment on what's coming, a reminder that we'll get everything God has planned for us, a praising and glorious life.Ephesians 2:1-6 message It wasn't so long ago that you were mired in that old stagnant life of sin. You let the world, which doesn't know the first thing about living, tell you how to live. You filled your lungs with polluted unbelief, and then exhaled disobedience. We all did it, all of us doing what we felt like doing, when we felt like doing it, all of us in the same boat. It's a wonder God didn't lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us.(adopted us) He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ. He did all this on his own, with no help from us! Then he picked us up and set us down in highest heaven in company with Jesus, our Messiah.Psalm 106:1 Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.Galatians 3:26-29New Life Version26 You are now children of God because you have put your trust in Christ Jesus. 27 All of you who have been baptized to show you belong to Christ have become like Christ. 28 God does not see you as a Jew or as a Greek. He does not see you as a servant or as a person free to work. He does not see you as a man or as a woman. You are all one in Christ. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you have become the true children of Abraham. What God promised to him is now yours.

This message invites you into a season of seeking God with expectation. We're asking Him to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think—for our region and for the people in our lives who desperately need Christ. We're stepping into deeper unity, hunger, and spiritual well-being. We want hearts resolved to go where God sends us and ears that recognize the Spirit's voice—individually and as a church. We're praying toward real outcomes: the salvation of friends and family, bold and obedient faith, humility and renewal, deep dependence on the Holy Spirit, baptisms and recommitments to Jesus, radical joy and generosity, clear discernment of God's leading, and a growing hunger for God's presence through prayer, song, and Scripture. We believe God honors a church that depends on Him, expects Him to move, and seeks His face together.Support our mission and learn more atwww.alloflife.churchGive to the work of the gospel herewww.alloflife.churchcenter.com/giving

Gratitude helps us to appreciate God's blessings in our life an enables us to recognize the ways he works and how he loves us. This blogcast explores “Realizing We Are Abundantly Blessed" from the Ad Infinitum blog, written by Jay Schaefer and read by Meg Ferguson.Growing up in a fairly large extended Catholic family, I remember the Thanksgivings of my childhood always including long, loud dinners, preceded by seemingly longer prayers of grace before the big meal. As children, we were encouraged (or, really, required) to go around the table and each name one thing we were most thankful for. It could be something small or large, momentous or enduring, as long as it was something we were truly grateful to have in our lives. My parents, aunts, and uncles were naturally trying to make sure we didn't take for granted the food on the table, let alone all the other blessings in our young lives. There were plenty of years when, fancying myself the dutiful elder of two children, I'd spend the week or so leading up to the holiday concocting the best possible thing to say I was thankful for, lest my younger sister or one of my cousins come up with something better. And then there were the years when I completely forgot to prepare, only to halfheartedly come up with something on the spot when my turn came. While the former may have boosted my ego, the latter made up for it by knocking me down a peg. I'd often think to myself, “Could I really be so ungrateful that that's all I could come up with?” As we hear in today's Gospel reading, one of the ten lepers, “realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice.” Jesus commended the Samaritan man's gratitude, telling him, “your faith has saved you.” Don't we all prefer to think of ourselves as that dutiful, humble foreigner, rather than counting ourselves among the nine ungrateful ones who couldn't be bothered to thank Jesus? And yet, how quick we are to forget the truth that we are, in fact, abundantly blessed by God. I've always found this story to have two key points. First, we are better able to receive God's blessings and grace when we are grateful: “your faith has saved you.” The second is a bit more hidden, though. Note how Luke mentions that, “one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned” to thank Jesus. It's not necessarily true that the other nine were just a bunch of ingrates. Rather, they were doing what Christ had instructed them to do. They obeyed in an act of faith, and in so doing, were healed along the way. While they were healed physically, however, the leper who returns is also healed spiritually: he is saved. How often do we forget, in the midst of the stresses and struggles of life, that we've each been blessed by God? It's not a matter of remembering to thank Him for the big things; those parts of life are the easiest to be grateful for. It's the small things, the things we take for granted, that we ought to try the hardest to be thankful for. Not only will that reflection make us more appreciative of our blessings themselves, it will remind us even more deeply that all of life's blessings are gifts from God. Question for Reflection: What are some things you are grateful for this year? Author:Jay Schaefer was the Production Coordinator for the Catholic Apostolate Center, where he assisted with training and technical coordination of the Center's webinars. Resources:Listen to On Mission: Thanksgiving and FaithRead the Ad Infinitum blog Follow us:The Catholic Apostolate CenterThe Center's podcast websiteInstagramFacebookApple PodcastsSpotify Fr. Todaywe're looking at the last two verses in Ephesians chapter 3. Along withPhilippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”, theseare two of the most quoted verses in the Bible that we hear when people finishtheir prayer. “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above allthat we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be gloryin the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen”. Whata powerful ending to this chapter!Paulseems to want to use every word possible to convey to us the vastness of God'spower as found in Jesus Christ. He has ended each of the two previous chapterswith praise to God for His great victory in Christ. He tells us that Christ'spower is so great He arose from the dead and ascended far above all (1:19-23).He teaches us that His power is so great He has reconciled Jews and Gentiles toeach other, and to God; and that He is now building a temple to the eternalglory of God (2:19-22). But in the paragraph before us, Paul shares theexciting truth that this, far “above all power”, is available to us! Itis even "above all that we ask or think." In other words, thepower of Christ, like the love of Christ, is beyond human understanding ormeasurement. And this is just the kind of power you and I need if we are towalk and war in victory. Theword "power" is again dunamis, which we met back in Ephesians 3:7;and "working" is energeia (energy) found in Ephesians 1:11, 19; 2:2;3:7; and 4:16. Some power is dormant; it is available, but not being used, suchas the power stored in a battery. But God's energy is effectual power—power atwork in our lives. This power works in us, in the inner man (Ephesians 3:16). RememberPhilippians 2:13, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to doof his good pleasure”. We can't even begin to imagine what it means that theeternal, creator God of the universe, through His Holy Spirit, is working inus!!!!! I'llnever forget I had a car for years that when it got cold below 30° the crazycar wouldn't start. Somehow or another, a disconnection took place between thebattery and the starter as I tried to start the car. I'm telling you, myfriend, in Christ Jesus, all the resurrection power of the Lord Jesus Christ, allthe power of the Holy Spirit that dwells in us, all the power that God wants usto have to live and do what He wants us to do, to be what He wants us to be, toaccomplish what He wants us to accomplish, is available in us. Ifwe could only understand and believe this and comprehend this! But our lack of experiencingthis power being released in our lives is because a disconnection has takenplace. Maybe, like my car, we get cold in our Christian experience. We're notreading our Bible. We're not praying as we should. We've lost fellowship withthe Lord. We've allowed some sin or corruption to get in our lives and heartslike the corrosion on the battery cables. I'm telling you my friend, when thattakes place we lose that connection. The power is still there, but we have lostthe connection because of unbelief, unconfessed sin, careless living and becauseof lack of love or grace that we need in our lives. Myfriend, oh my friend, today realize the available power, the resurrectionpower, the power that raised Jesus from the dead. God Himself is at work in usif we'd only allow Him to flow through us for His glory. Note in verse 20 “ToHim be glory in the church by Christ Jesus”. This power is not given to usso we can build bigger churches, live better lives, or even to do a greater workfor Christ. No, it's all to the glory of Jesus Christ. That power is available butwhen we want to use it selfishly, God doesn't give it to us. He doesn't releaseit within us. But when we live for the glory of God, oh, awesome and wonderfuland powerful things take place for His kingdom's sake.
