Embrace God’s Word with us as Dan Hickman teaches from Genesis 1:1-2 in the message, The Origin of the Universe. We should study God’s revelation (the written creation account in scripture) and general revelation (His creation in nature) to equip us to worship and glorify God.
This morning Sam started a new series in the book of Genesis. Today was the introduction. This is the audio podcast.
Our middle school and high school students led us in worship today. Ken Edge, one of our middle school directors, spoke from Genesis 1:1-2 to help us meditate on the character of God.
Jigsaw puzzles are a popular activity for many people. One of the big disappointments for people who enjoy completing puzzles is when a piece is missing. For these people, that missing piece makes the entire effort seem incomplete. Some who like puzzles hold onto one piece until the very end to complete the picture. It must feel this way for God too. He watches our lives come together and fall into place, but He gets to hold onto that final piece to complete the picture. We read the parable about the woman with the ten pieces of silver who could only find nine. The bible says she lit lamps and swept her house until she found the missing piece. She would have no peace while that one piece was missing. Many people lead good lives, but they are missing parts of the picture. Some have lost pieces over the years, but do not even realize that they have lost it. How sad would it be to get to the end and only to find we are missing the last piece of the puzzle. We have to find the missing peace.

When we describe someone, we often use adjectives to describe them. We might say that they are funny, outgoing, or shy. We use these words to try to convey an image of the person. From the first page of Genesis to the last page of Revelation, the Bible describes God and His love for us. When we read the word of God, we get to know Him better because we are reading what He wants us to know about Him. How does God identify Himself in scripture? One of the most apparent themes throughout the bible is that there is only one true God.

HOW BIG IS YOUR GOD? Genesis 1:1-3 What relational connection does Mike emphasize Genesis 1-2 and Revelation 21-22 have? (God’s perfect worlds) Why do some say that Gen 1:1-2 are the most important verses in Genesis, maybe the entire old testament? Can Science and the Scriptures be studied at the same time? Which (science or Scripture) should have the ultimate authority when there is apparent contradictions? What does it mean when we say God is transcendent? How does a transcendent God give us confidence in our faith and life today? Compare and contrast the Hebrew word to CREATE (BARA) vs. FASHION (YASAR). Are we able to create? Or do we simply fashion the macules that God created? What kind of earth was the earth in the beginning? v. 2 (formless, void, darkness) What is a possible interpretation of the gap period between v. 1 and 2 and the concept of the darkness of sin entering into God’s creation. Despite the darkness and lifeless creation, and possible sin in the angelic, did God ever surrender and take his presence from the dark world? Even when sin enters does God exit (read v.2 again and noticed God is hovering still even in the darkness and then read Psalm 139:7-12)

Elohim: The Creator God Series: God Has a Name Date: August 4, 2019 Scripture: Genesis 1:1-2; 2:4-7 Big Idea: God introduces His characteristics to us through the purposeful revelation of His many names. His very first name introduction is Elohim, the mighty Creator God. • Jehovah-shalom: The Lord is Peace • Jehovah-raah: The Lord is my Shepherd • El Roi: God Who Sees • Jehovah-jireh: The Lord Will Provide • Jehovah-rapha: The Lord Who Heals • Jehovah-nissi: The Lord My Banner • Jehovah-shammah: The Lord is There What was He wanting us to know when He called himself Elohim? 1. Elohim meant that God is distinct from His creation (Transcendent)...Transcendent: to exist above and independent from; to rise above all that is created 2. Elohim meant that God is apart from the constraints of time (Timeless) 3. Elohim means that God is apart from the constraints of space (Omnipresent)...Omnipresent: God is present everywhere…at all the same time 4. Elohim means that God is an intensely personal God (Intimate) Application: How can understanding God as Elohim change my life? 1. We can live knowing that the Creator owns it all 2. The very first thing the Bible teaches us about who we are is that we were created by God in the image and likeness of God. There is an image of God living in every single one of us. Somewhere, though, we let go of that image and, like Cain, become something else.

In the beginning... Life is a story. It has a beginning. It has an ending. But the middle is where we live, fight, and struggle. The Bible begins as a story meant to guide our stories. Our shapeless and empty moments in search of meaning find it here.

The question as come up many times through history: Who is God? We can take that question many ways, but we must first ask is God a who or is God a what? When Jesus came to Earth, God became man; that was a who. But we are more interested in the SPIRIT of God. The bible gives us insight into the character of God, but we have no way of describing God with first hand knowledge. The spirit of God encompasus a host of attributes. In Genesis, we see God as a creator: In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth, and it was without form. That is a blank canvas. At auction, people do not purchase a blank canvas or a lump of clay. The beauty and the value of the blank canvas is found in what the artist does to it. When God looks at a life, he sees the potential. The value is not evident to the onlooker, until the artist finishes His work. Each of us fit the description of Genesis 1:1-2. We are all without form and void. God saw something in each of us that no one else could see. As humans we look at people through their past, God looks at us through their future. God has the eye of an artist. He can see things in us that we cannot see. Even if there are blemishes or mistakes, the Artist can make it into something beautiful. That is the beauty of a blank canvas.
The One God who has created everything wants us to be in close relationship with Him, and He has made this possible through Jesus.

As presuppositional, young earth theists, to state that God created the world and that it is a relatively young world is not a crazy position held by zealous Jesus people, but a reasonable position, based on God's word and able to account for scientific evidence. We hold this not to shout that we are right...but that our God is the glorious greater of all things.

As we start our study in the book of Genesis, Pastor Steve focused on the choice between believing the simple but profound "In the beginning, God" and the other theories of origins that exist. While we only covered two verses in this message, it was a great introduction into the topic of origins and a survey of what man has created to believe to try and take God out of the "beginning".
