Welcome to episode #980 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Tamara Myles is one of the world's leading experts on meaningful work, with a career that bridges research, leadership consulting, and positive psychology. She's the author of The Secret To Peak Productivity, a sought-after speaker and advisor to companies like Microsoft and KPMG, and one of the first 600 people in the world to earn a master's in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. In her new book, Meaningful Work - How To Ignite Passion And Performance In Every Employee (co-authored with Wes Adams), Tamara brings both scientific rigor and real-world empathy to one of the most pressing challenges of our time: how to make work feel like it matters. In this conversation, Tamara shares the results of her multi-year study - the first of its kind - on how leaders influence meaning in the workplace. She introduces the three core drivers of meaningful work: community, contribution, and challenge, and explains why they're more relevant than ever in a world grappling with burnout, disconnection, and shifting values around work. We also talk about the lasting impact of the pandemic, the rise of employee apathy, and how social media has warped our collective expectations about fulfillment. Tamara, who teaches at both the University of Pennsylvania and Boston College, blends her academic insight with a deeply human perspective - reminding us that meaning is not just a nice-to-have, but a business imperative. Whether you're leading a team or trying to reconnect with your own sense of purpose, this episode offers a much-needed compass. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 58:29. In this episode, we explore the power of meaningful work and how it can transform not only your career but your entire well-being. When you find meaning in what you do, you become more productive, happier, and healthier. I share some eye-opening stats, like how employees who feel their work is meaningful are 33% more productive and much more likely to stay with their organizations. I've personally experienced the difference meaningful work makes, and today, I encourage you to step back, reflect, and find ways to bring more meaning into the work you're already doing. Small mindset shifts can lead to big changes in how you approach your job—and ultimately, your life. Key Takeaways: Meaningful work boosts performance: When you find purpose in your work, you're more productive, engaged, and less likely to quit. It improves well-being: Purposeful work enhances not just your career but your happiness and health, too. Start small: Focus on one meaningful aspect of your job and lean into it. Even small steps can lead to big changes over time. Shift your mindset: If you can't change jobs, change your perspective. Find gratitude in what you do. It impacts your whole life: Meaningful work doesn't just make you better at your job—it improves your relationships, health, and overall fulfillment. Actionable Takeaway I challenge you to take just 2% of your day—yes, just a small amount—and dedicate it to thinking about how you can bring more meaning into your work. Whether it's connecting more deeply to the impact you're making or finding a new way to create value, start small. Even a mindset shift can change how you feel about your work. And if you're not feeling connected to your job right now, take that time to explore new possibilities. In this episode, the second in our series about creating meaning in later life, you'll hear two wise older women - Marion Ragaliauskas & Pam Winter - in conversation, as they explore the experience of women transitioning into later life. What's similar for women in this phase of life compared to men? And crucially, what's different for women? As older women, both Marion and Pam are practicing and living their own inner work of aging, which brings into play areas as loss, review, evaluation and re-imagining: exploring the letting go of who we once were and learning how to embrace and experiment with who we are becoming, or could become. A great reflection for anyone going through or approaching this stage of life, or if you want to understand more about it, or if you are helping others to go through it. In the absence of meaning, we must create it. In our last live broadcast, we discussed "The Meaning Crisis" -- what is perceived by many as an absence or loss of meaning. People say they want to "find meaning," but rarely seem to consider the possibility that they are capable of creating it. In this show, we'll discuss strategies for creating meaning and designing a more meaningful world. Specifically, we discuss four kinds of meaningful objects:Aesthetically Meaningful ObjectsSymbolically or Representationally Meaningful ObjectsObjects with Inherited NarrativeObjects with Loaded Narrative---C. You'll hear Tony's story of rolling up his sleeves and doing some hard labor. You'll also hear the labor being just the start of the reward. He shares about the less tangible but not lesser results in community, emotional reward, enthusiasm to do more.Given his leadership role and experience, we talk about the Spodek Method. I took the liberty of pulling some what he said and formatting it. Listen to the conversation for context for the full meaning, but here's some:You opened some doors. The idea [to act] was there but I'd come up with excuses for why I couldn't engage now. If [I'm] honest I'll be a whole lot more effective right now . . . than I might be in fifteen years time. It makes a huge amount of sense to do right now so I thank you . . .because I don't know if I would have acted on it. Now that I've committed to it, I will.Very few have done what you've done: changing diet . . . stopping air travel. . .[Those] not doing it:Don't recognize what it takesDon't recognize the benefits of it, andCan't credibly convince others. There's no better way than trying it yourself. You can then speak with authority and awareness, as opposed to just saying oh we should do this but not really intending to.Sometimes [we] require some form of awakening that . . . gives intrinsic motivation to do something, something different . . . through that action of doing something differently, you can build momentum. The Spodek Method is one of those tools to enable that awakening. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Amy Wrzesniewski, professor at the Wharton School of Pennsylvania, is an award-winning professor who researches how people make meaning of their work. Her research on job crafting examines how people redraw the boundaries of their jobs to change both their work identity and the meaning of the work. Amy's work has been published in prestigious academic journals as well as mainstream outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Harvard Business Review. And in 2015 and 2019 Amy won the “Inspiring Yale” Award, voted by students as the most inspiring professor at Yale's School of Management. Amy earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Prior to joining the Wharton School, Amy was on faculty Yale and NYU. In this episode we discuss the following: We make a mistake in thinking that certain jobs are meaningful and other jobs are not. However, the meaning is really in the relationship between people and their work, which makes finding meaning a far more personal endeavor. It's not just about finding fit. It's also about creating fit. Just as there is some finite number of people we could build a great life with, there are also some number of jobs or careers we could make our own and find meaning in. By changing both our perception and behaviors, we can alter the meaning and significance of our jobs. Whether we view our job as cleaning hospital rooms or as healing people, there is significant flexibility in how we can craft our jobs and derive meaning from our work. Hello Lovely Listeners, This conversation was especially rich to me, and I know you're going to want to hear more from Natalya Kolosowsky. Natalya is a bilingual artist, coach, facilitator, and teacher of creative processes. She is the founder of Shadow Tender - an interdisciplinary project that teaches people how to dance with their demons. Natalya's work is informed by 3+ decades of experience in dance, somatic modalities, and formal training in art, design, and psychology. Her work has been presented in universities, museums, and theaters around the world. Natalya also provides strategic branding and communication services for educators and creative entrepreneurs. She brought insight to my own embodied intuition about being "dismembered" internally in some of the ways I haven't been able to express all parts of my cultural identity. I also loved her perspective on what we can do in this world that can be so destabilizing and how spaces for creativity can be healing. So often in life we can feel trapped in the mundane tasks of life. As life moves fast it may seem extremely difficult to find meaning in it. This week we seek to find answers of where in life we are affected by this dilemma and how would be best to create that meaning in where it may be lacking. As you listen to this try to take some time out of your day in the morning and evening to ask yourself why. Why is this important? Why do I care? Ect. As we often speak about in the podcast is the importance of asking why in reference to Simon Sinek's, organizational psychologist, book ‘Start with Why'. By doing this practice of asking macro ‘Why' questions we then are able to create meaning in the micro trivial tasks of our lives. This will provide you with a clear vision and remind you of the importance in the little things of life.

How can you create meaning in your life? Sounds like a daunting question –a daunting task. When, in reality, it can be found even in the smallest things that bring you life. When you can find something that does that for you and lean into that, that's when you lean into true success. Anything else, that's definite or objective, can easily give you a false sense and fleeting sense of success. And, the beauty in creating your own meaning in life is that you can always change direction and still be “successful”.It took David Weider, an adventure therapist living in Boise, Idaho, many changes in direction before he was able to find meaning in something that would last for 17 years. From sculpting, architecture, to outdoors, travel, adventure sports, and now wilderness therapy. Despite many challenges throughout his teenage and young adult years, David continued to push himself to fully explore his interests and continues to make sure that with whatever he does, he finds meaning in the process. In this episode of Success is Subjective, David joins Joanna to share his journey going from studying to be an architect to eventually becoming a therapist in wilderness therapy. His journey has been anything near linear but has been entirely meaningful. Listen in to gain insight on the importance of finding meaning in everything you do, even if it's simply in the process of making a mediocre sculpture piece. What You Will LearnDavid's peculiar childhood storyHow David almost didn't go to college and what brought him to goWhen he dropped out of college and changed directionsLosing a parent as a young adultIt's okay to not have a linear path! What pushed David to go back to school to become a therapistWhere David finds himself now in Boise, IdahoThe importance in finding meaning in what you doNot everything you do has to provide valueConnect with David WeiderEmail santafly@hotmail.comConnect with Joanna Lilley Success is Subjective WebsiteSuccess is Subjective PatreonLilley Consulting WebsiteLilley Consulting on Instagram Lilley Consulting on Facebook Success is Subjective on Apple PodcastSuccess is Subjective on Google PodcastSuccess is Subjective on iHeart RadioSuccess is Subjective on SpotifySuccess is Subjective on StitcherSuccess is Subjective on AmazonSuccess is Subjective on AudibleSponsored by: College AlternativeEmail joanna@successissubjective.org

In episode 35, Terri Stipanovich, founder and CEO of small-batch manufacturing factory The Collective Thread, shares how her background in the non-profit world and mission to empower women to earn a living wage led her to start The Collective Thread as a resource for emerging designers, training ground for industrial sewing, and a place for all to find meaning in creating something beautiful. In 2010 the founder of Faith that Works, now The Collective Thread, Terri Stipanovich traveled to East Africa on a vision trip. Terri was heartbroken when she saw refugee Somali women facing severe poverty and oppression. During that trip, she made a decision to start an organization that would empower refugee women both in her hometown of St. Louis, Mo, and in the Somali region of East Africa. After some years of working with women in both areas, she realized economic empowerment was the only sustainable solution to the issues she was passionately working to solve. At that point, The Collective Thread began to offer free sewing classes, which then led to living wage jobs for women both in Africa and St. Louis. It wasn't long before some St. Louis apparel brands approached Terri asking her team to take on their sewing needs. She knew this was a potential business opportunity that could fund the mission she had spent 10 years developing. But she needed experts in commercial sewing to succeed. Terri grew her team and expanded to a beautiful historic space in The Garment District in Downtown St. Louis. They purchased state-of-the-art equipment to increase their free sewing education classes to the community and to offer top-notch product development and small-batch manufacturing to companies in need of these services. They grew their management staff by hiring aspiring fashion designers and creating a winning team that has served over 50 brands fulfilling apparel design and manufacturing needs—all while staying true to The Collective Thread's mission to empower vulnerable women through new skills and a living wage job. In this episode, you'll learn: How working in non-profit world led Terri to into cut & sew manufacturing The mission that began it all How The Collective Thread got connected with the refugee community in Saint Louis The real cost of training new sewers and how The Collective Thread can afford to make it their focus Why a skilled sewing workforce is so important yet so undervalued Who makes up the team at The Collective Thread and who they work with The questions all designers should come prepared to answer when they first meet their factory and why those questions are important How The Collective Thread learned the hard way about needing to focus down and say no to certain client work The one thing that can make or break your relationship with your factory What things would make your brand the perfect fit to produce with The Collective Thread The biggest challenge that Terri faces in growing The Collective Thread People and resources mentioned in this episode: The Collective Thread website The Collective Thread Instagram Terri's email Book a consultation with Terri Saint Louis Fashion Fund

He shares his thoughts about how "slowing down" in therapy actually speeds things up to create transformational moments with clients. He additionally shares about the work of his colleagues and himself providing experiential training on expressive methods for transformative meaning-making in grief work at the Portland Institute for Loss and Transition. We talk a bit about the Grief Track (10 workshops) being offered at the upcoming Expressive Therapies Summit, Los Angeles, event. He will specifically be teaching on Writing Through Bereavement: Reconstructing Meaning & Loss at the event. How can we become better at thinking strategically and creating meaning from the mess that life throws at us?In episode 9 of the B-side I speak to Sydney born, New York based, hip-hop journalist-turned-strategist Mr Mark Pollard, Strategy CEO of Mighty Jungle. Strategy CEO is a made-up title, but according to Mark, people don't listen to him unless he uses the word “strategy” at all times. The title isn't too far off really. Mark lives and breathes strategy, he writes, gives talks and does strategy consulting. And holds strategy training workshops for the likes of The Economist, Twitter, Facebook, Euronews, Mozilla, the Wall Street Journal, Poo-Pourri, and bunch of agencies around the world. In a previous life, he worked agency side, leading teams at McCann, Leo Burnett, and Big Spaceship. Judged the Jay Chiat Awards and the Webbys, and sat on the Australian Account Planning Group (APG) committee. He also founded Australia's first full-colour hip hop magazine, Stealth, in 1998.He is the founder and host of the Sweathead podcast which has almost 400,000 listens. Runs the Sweathead Facebook group with nearly 9,000 strategists from around the world. And he is about to publish his first book, “Strategy Is Your Words”.Mark and I dig deep into the power of words and how they're used to give structure and purpose to the way we think, live and work. We breakdown the role of a strategist and the principles of strategy itself, and we jam on a whole lot of other topics too.Mark is a super cool cat, a razor-sharp dude, and a good friend. I really enjoyed talking to him and spending a little time inside his amazing head, as I'm sure you will too.You can find mark here: https://www.markpollard.netAnd find out more about Sweathead here: http://sweathead.co© Copyright The B-side with James Barrow 2020.
