This week Brian is joined by Berlin based South African Musician Lucy Kruger of Lucy Kruger and The Lost Boys. To encounter Lucy Kruger's music is to witness a singular journey of constant reflection that is producing an ever-widening arc of creativity. 8th April 2022 sees the release of Teen Tapes (for performing your own stunts) on Unique Records, a culmination of the Tapes Trilogy. In June 2021, the Berlin-based South African artist released the third Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys album, ‘Transit Tapes' (for women who move furniture around), which serves as a follow up to her 2019 release, ‘Sleeping Tapes for Some Girls'.Since first embarking on the very specific process of recording music - with an early album that she recorded soon after finishing her arts degree in the Eastern Cape town of Grahamstown - Kruger has approached her artistry with the care of an archaeologist seeking all the interwoven elements that make up the historical whole. Whether the now finite suite of albums with André Leo as Medicine Boy (More Knives, 2014; Kinda Like Electricity, 2016; Lower, 2018; Take Me With You When You Disappear, 2020), or her solo work, Kruger has engaged in a slow, steady exploration of what it takes to make music that's universal, that endures, that draws listeners in, even after countless listens. Even wat anders. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/over-leven/message
There is poetry in every cell of Lucy's body. What a beautiful interview! One of my dearest friends and favourite collaborators, Lucy Kruger joins us from Berlin for this episode. She speaks of how music strings memories together, being well behaved, music as a career, and the importance of consistency in engaging with yourself, the world and your craft. Lucy Kruger is a musician from Cape Town, South Africa, who now lives in Berlin. Her solo performance focuses on the bare bones of the songs, a slow burning psychedelic folk that is both intimate and ambient. In September 2019 she signed with independent German label Unique Records and Schubert Publishing to release her second full length album, Sleeping Tapes for Some Girls, a follow up to her debut release, Summer’s Not That Simple. ‘Though the album is called Sleeping Tapes for Some Girls, the music feels like lullabies for Nick Drake, as Lucy treads the same deep waters as the singer from the late 60s and early 70s, utilizing her voice and guitar to delicate effect—where the volume is performed in a soft tactile caress of fingers on skin or fretboard.’ - Post-Punk. Lucy is currently working on her next album. Susan and I talked about her new film Living in The Future’s Past, the environment, desire and making better choices, hope, agency and about why life is really an invitation. Watch the Trailer and find out ore about the film here. Synopsis Living in the Future’s Past is a beautifully creative and unique film that weaves evolution, emergence, energy, dark ecology and what some are calling the end of nature into a story that explains our place among the species of the Earth’s household. Presented and narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Jeff Bridges and directed by Susan Kucera (Breath of Life, For the Love of Tango, Trading on Thin Air) will have its World Premiere at Santa Barbara International Film on Thursday February 1st 2018. Jeff Bridges presents this beautifully photographed tour de force of original thinking on who we are and the environmental challenges we face. The film upends our way of thinking and provides original insights into our subconscious motivations, the unintended consequences, what to do about our fossil slaves, and how our fundamental animal nature influences our future as Humankind. Living in the Future’s Past feels like a bolt of lightning from both the future and the past and aims to put the viewer in the drivers’ seat. It is a strikingly original take on who we are, where we came from and why our thoughts and actions are the way they are. Bridges, alongside expert scientists and authors featured in the film include climate scientist and astronaut Piers Sellers, Being Ecological author Timothy Morton, conservationist and ethnobotanist Mark Plotkin, physicist Leonard Mlodinow, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander General Wesley Clark, and author Daniel Golemanamong others as well as a stunning original music score by Bridges collaborator Keefus Ciancia (Lady Killers, Thunderbird, Sleeping Tapes) and additional music by composer Bob Holroyd and award-winning sound designer Ken Polk. Biography Susan Kucera has been working in film since she was nine years old, first as a camera assistant creating science films with her father for Britannica films, then as a screenwriter and commercial director. One of the first owner/operators of the groundbreaking Red OneCamera she produced, wrote, directed and filmed Trading on Thin Air (2009), wrote, filmed, directed and co-produced For the Love of Tango (2014), directed, filmed and produced Breath of Life (2015). ---------- Image Copyright: Susan Kucera. Artist: The Almanac Singers Album: Troubadours: Folk and the Roots of American Music How a confluence of economical and political conditions made two very different men "fellow travelers..." They look like friends. Photo © Time/Life Two disparate show business figures seemed to fall into a concentric orbit during a unique period of Hollywood history. One, was a man of the dusty road who brought the sensibility of depression era America to the mainstream. The other, became thought of as one of the country’s homegrown geniuses. His name began to embody a brand of American commercial artistic creativity. One man was Burl Ives, the other was Walt Disney. Both exuded Americana. Both made personal political decisions that somewhat singed their historical images. The choices they made involved their testimony before The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Each individual that was called had a difficult decision to made. These two men made essentially the same choice. Burl Ives began as an itinerant singer and banjo player. By 1940, he had his own radio show where he performed the versions “of record” of hobo and road songs. He popularized the Irish war ballad ’Foggy Dew", the minstrel tune ”The Blue Tail Fly" and "Big Rock Candy Mountain" a song celebrating an idealized version of the Hobo life. Ives also performed with the Almanac Singers a folk group which at different times included Woody Guthrie, and Pete Seeger. By most measures, his biggest hit over time is version of the 17th-century English song "La...

This 24th episode brings us to topics such as the casual pace of TV drama, 24, the bizarrely science-fiction based universe of Fringe, how it takes a team to put together iconic pop culture television shows, the desire to build a Millie McCormick bigature, skirting around Carlos Castaneda's spiritual exploration in the Don Juan book series, earning a "trail name" (like Fishdix) while train hopping across the country, the sea of difference and uncanny similarities between the few prominent internet providers, Jeff Bridges' new meditative musical project, Sleeping Tapes, stepping over cauldrons of pizza sauce and learning "How-To-Quit-A-Job-After-Three-Days" from Joe & Ian's worst job experiences ever, how passion and drive affect personal work ethics in the pursuit of happiness, and ultimately why it's important to chase your dreams for the betterment of the world instead of numbly coasting through a mundane life experience. If we all effect each other, why wouldn't we attempt to give you our absolute best? We wrap it all up in a corn tortilla with a recipe (below) for some pretty kick-ass all-veggie tacos from Joe. Who wants to go to bed hungry? Certainly not us! All this and more on today’s episode of High-Dere.
