The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
Anthony Phillips, founding Genesis guitarist, joins Jason Barnard to talk about the formation of Genesis, his departure, and his latest album, Gemini – Pieces For Piano. He traces the Genesis story back to Charterhouse and the summer of 1967, when he first heard a 12-string guitar. Peter Gabriel’s theatrical stage persona came about through necessity, filling dead time while Phillips and Mike Rutherford fought with temperamental instruments. The jump from From Genesis To Revelation to Trespass has always looked abrupt; Phillips explains it simply: he and Rutherford spent the eight months between recording and release writing constantly, with ‘Dusk,’ ‘White Mountain’ and ‘Stagnation’ sketched out before the debut had even flopped. Then there’s the stage fright. Not ordinary nerves but sudden mid-performance blanks that came on after glandular fever. He was eighteen and never told anyone. There’s also a brief exchange with Nick Drake, playing the same indifferent university crowds. When Drake learned Phillips had written ‘Let Us Now Make Love,’ he said one word back: “Dangerous.” The conversation also covers his classical studies, the troubled release of The Geese and the Ghost, and writing the title track of Gemini. "Of Ghosts And Gods" The New Jersey-born, Harvard educated David Berkeley is one of modern music's true renaissance men. Now, people throw that term out a tad lazily but in the case of Berkeley, it truly fits. Aside from releasing close to ten perfect albums, including The Confluence, Some Kind Of Cure and Oh Quiet World, Berkeley is an author, a label owner, and he's been a river rafting guide, a band manager, a travel writer and a creative writing teacher. A writer of tremendous depth, focus and sensitivity, much like Paul Simon or Nick Drake, Berkeley has the uncanny ability to slow the world down and hold it still. Informed by actual geography as well as the geography of loss and emotional reconstruction, Berkeley's songbook is a wondrous collection of compositions that gaze out at the map of the human heart with effortless poeticism and grace. He's toured with Billy Bragg, Ben Lee and Gary Jules, appeared on This American Life and played South By Southwest and he's one of the most consistently critically-acclaimed musicians around. He's also one half of the aforementioned transatlantic folk duo Sons Of Town Hall. Along with singer/songwriter Ben Parker, Sons Of Town Hall are hard to describe, but I'm going to try. Under the guises of Parker's George Ulysses Brown and Berkeley's Josiah Chester Jones, Sons Of Town Hall are fictitious 19th Century Victorian-era vagabonds who sing about their travels by way of a kind of magical hand-built raft. Falling somewhere between Coleridge, Lord Byron by way of Simon and Garfunkel's Wednesday Morning, 3AM, Sons Of Town Hall's new album Of Ghosts and Gods is a stirring collection of songs about travel, friendship, following your heart and staying afloat while doing it. www.davidberkeley.com (http://www.davidberkeley.com) www.sonsoftownhall.com (http://www.sonsoftownhall.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast: IG + BLUESKY + THREADS: @emberspodcast

Today's poem is from Perihelion: A History of Touch by Franny Choi. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Maggie writes… “Today's poem is about the snow moon, the first full moon of February. The explanation behind the name “snow moon” is fairly straightforward: February is often the snowiest month. After reading this quiet stunner of a poem, I was inspired to turn on one of my favorite Nick Drake songs, “Pink Moon.” I highly recommend this poem/song pairing.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Recorded in just two midnight sessions with nothing but a guitar, a piano, and a single microphone, Nick Drake's Pink Moon (1972) is a haunting departure from the lush orchestrations of his earlier work. It's a record of absolute solitude—stripped of all artifice and reduced to its barest essentials. This week, the Random Album Generator finds the quietest masterpiece in the folk-rock canon.Inside This Episode:Side A Reaction: This record is famously short, so we're moving quickly. If you're listening with us, pause after track five, "Hazey Jane II." Jeremy and Jon react to the eerie intimacy of Drake's vocals and his incredible, intricate guitar work.5 Fast Facts: We uncover the mystery of how these tapes were delivered to the label, the "one-piano-overdub" rule, and how a car commercial 27 years later turned this forgotten record into a cult phenomenon.Side B & Final Thoughts: we finish the final six tracks and discuss the heavy silence that follows the closing notes. Is this an album of despair, or is there a hidden light in the minimalism? The Verdict & Standout Tracks: We pick our top 3 essential tracks. The field recording I chose is of a gentleman named Thomas Penniman performing an early 20th-century work song about weaving from the Gower Peninsula. It's a strange, compelling and mysterious recording, made in the winter of 1974. There's a repeated refrain, "Mrs Tanner has six sons/And they all sang like thrushes as they worked at the loom", which I loved. But then the song becomes quite angry because the sons have only been given half a herring for breakfast. It's not enough! Mr Penniman beats his fist, and it sounds like both a drum and a piece of wooden machinery thumping. The "song" in this version isn't musical as such, it's somewhere between a passionate poetry reading, an a cappella performance, and, as it goes on, almost like mouth music. Mr Penniman starts out in a determined, lucid way, but seems to lose the thread of the song as he goes on. I pulled at the threads of the recording's story and made discoveries. Thomas Penniman was an American anthropologist, and curator at the Pitt Rivers between 1939-63. The museum website says: "Penniman saw the Museum as aiming, 'to show the origin, development, geographical distribution and variation of the principal arts and industries of mankind from the earliest times to the age of mass production". He was responsible for the organisation of the card catalogue system, which, I suppose, is one reason why information about these field recordings, and the recordings themselves, are easily available to us online today. I liked the sense of a history of technology for this artefact. The song references the Tanner family of weavers, the most famous of which was the Welsh traditional singer Phil Tanner (1862-1950), known as the Gower Nightingale. He performed and remembered - and in doing so transmitted into the future - a body of folk songs in English, using the Gower dialect. They survive through him. His life story conjures up a lost world of Welsh weaving, of family "factories" and mills, and of singing and dancing (I sing, badly, a line from the shearing song "Rosebuds in June"). The Welsh wool industry peaked around the time the song was born, and declined after the early 20th century. The song suggests this industry was no idyll; hard, repetitive labour and poverty is suggested through its refrains and rhythms. The Tanner family has six sons, but they also had a daughter, yet she is not included in the song. Why not, and why was she unsung?I was intrigued by Thomas Penniman and Phil Tanner, and how their personal and other histories were entwined by song and work, and in this specific song as it has come to me. What was I responding to, and how, and why? I liked the way the song carries a memory of the lost world of that industry and time, and I was compelled by how Mr Penniman, who must have heard the song directly from Phil Tanner, starts out so confidently, determined to conjure the song, but loses his way - he was an elderly man by the time of the recording - and ends in a kind of confusion, unable to remember how to finish it. There seemed something moving in all this about how singers and songs are woven on the loom of time, and how the means of that remembering, or passing forward, of the song has evolved through the technologies of the century to our time of the lossless WAV format - which is how we're hearing our pieces. But there are also loose threads, tangles, confusions, snags, knots, widows and losses. I'm a poet, not a musician, so my piece is a poem. It's lo-fi in terms of how I was able to edit together the original field recording and my own text. You can probably hear how hand-made it is, despite the tech. But I like that. There's a tiny moment at the end of the recording when Mr Penniman asks for help to stop the recording, which I found haunting - the strange moment after the song has ended, and we just hear the scratchy particles of lost time. So, I have kept it in.Weaving song from the Gower Peninsula reimagined by Nick Drake.———Part of the project A Century of Sounds, reimagining 100 sounds covering 100 years from the collections of the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford. Interview with singer songwriter Robert Deeble. Born in 1966 in Long Beach, California, Robert cut his teeth as a songwriter in the gritty underground of the LBC, which introduced him to longtime collaborators like drummer Stephen Hodges (Mike Watt/Tom Waits) and folk heroine Victoria Williams, who helped launch his early records. His 1998 release, EarthSide Down, earned notice for its orchestral textures and spirit- infused lyrics—reminiscent of Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake. By his third album, Paste had described him as “truly an arresting talent, able to gain entry to places rarely imagined by most songwriters. Following his This Bar Has No One Left EP in 2005, Deeble completed a Master's degree in psychology—a journey that has deeply informed his songwriting and emotional perspective. His 2012 album Heart Like Feathers marked his musical return, with themes of Robert Deeble - Bio depression and struggle but with “a redemptive hope that brought glimmers of light (Performer Magazine).” Robert emerged again in 2018, with one of his more personal works, Beloved. Born from his experience of fostering and then adopting a child with his wife, the album captures the agony and tenderness of temporarily caring for a child, the heartbreak of letting her go, and, finally, becoming her parent. Robert's recordings over the years have featured such industry veterans as Rachel Blumberg (The Decemberists), Jen Wood (The Postal Service), Tomo Nakayama and others. He has shared bills with artists such as Low, IDA, Jason Molina, Sam Phillips, M. Ward, Over the Rhine, Mike Watt, Damien Jurado, David Bazan and Victoria Williams. The Space Between Us shows Deeble to be a craftsman of understated, emotionally resonant songwriting. Or as Bandcamp put it, "Every new record from Seattle musician Robert Deeble is like stumbling across some secret grotto. Line Up : Marc Nammour (rap) & Loïc Lantoine (rap). Son : Benoît Letirant, Mathias Taylor. ► Album Portraits crachés Instagram Nammour - Instagram Lantoine. Titres interprétés au grand studio : - To see the World (en duo) Live RFI - Building a Home, extrait de l'album - East Coast (en solo) Live RFI. Line Up : Barbara Forstner (chant, guitare) William Peyrieux (guitare). Son : Benoît Letirant. ► Album Long Long Gone (Raws Prod). Instagram - YouTube.

Students of classical music know that Johann Sebastian Bach was one of the most important and influential composers of all time…his use of instruments, four-part harmonies, and use of innovative structures in his material were all brilliant… When he was alive, he commanded plenty of respect…but after he died in March 1685, he was almost forgotten…the only reason we talk about him today is that there was a Bach revival in the 19th century…he became a retro hero in the world of classical music… No one knew anything about Robert Johnson when he was alive other than some myths and legends among hardcore fans of Delta Blues…but when his records were reissued in 1961, 23 years after he died, did his reputation explode… Charles Mingus was revered by fellow jazz artists…it was only after he passed away in 1979 that his influence on jazz was celebrated… We can also talk about posthumous praise for Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, and Elliott Smith…and although Tupac and Biggie were big stars when they were shot, they became even bigger stars in death… I'm going to add another name to this list: Ian Curtis and Joy Division…when Ian took his own life in May 1980, he and the band were so skint that he had to give his dog away because he and his wife couldn't afford to feed him… Today, though, Ian and Joy Division are acknowledged as one of the most important and most influential post-punk bands ever…why?...what was the big deal about Joy Division? And why do they continue to be a big deal?...let's examine this. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've paired up two songwriters who love to wander musically but whose recordings are tough to mistake for anyone else's. It's Luke Temple and Will Westerman. Temple has been making incredible records at a pretty solid clip since around 2005, first making a real splash as part of a trio called Here We Go Magic, whose four-album catalog is legendary in certain circles. But Temple has also recorded fantastic records under his own name, under the alias Art Feynman, and, more recently, with Luke Temple and the Cascading Moms. That name is a little funny, kind of like his music—there's humor but also a little bit of menace hiding underneath sounds that sometimes flirt with ‘70s soft-rock in the best ways. Check out “Echo Park Donut,” which is out this month on the new Cascading Moms record, Hungry Animal. The other half of today's chat, Will Westerman, invited Temple to play on his 2023 album An Inbuilt Fault, and as you'll hear they sound eager to meet and perhaps work together again. Westerman has been releasing music under his last name since 2020, crafting subtly mellow records that reveal something more intense when you listen to his lyrics. The third and latest Westerman album, A Jackal's Wedding, came out last fall, and it's another evolution in his sound—it's been compared to mellow greats like Talk Talk, Tindersticks, and Nick Drake, so if those names mean anything to you—and they should—give it a shot. Check out “Mosquito” from A Jackal's Wedding right here. This conversation between Temple and Westerman may have been the furthest geographically we've ever recorded: Temple was at home in Los Angeles and Westerman at home in Milan, where he recently moved after spending several years in Greece. These two talk about being recently married, about growing as artists and perhaps tricking yourself in the process, and about the very different places they now live. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:35 – Start of the chat 4:35 – On Los Angeles and gentrification in Echo Park 9:39 – Westerman on Milan, Greece, and learning new languages 13:20 – On Luke Temple's new album, Hungry Animal 19:50 – On tricking yourself to keep the creative process fresh 20:57 – On art and "the capitalist need to innovate" 24:50 – Comparing the musical heritage between the US and UK 28:25 – On the spirit of Jazz and Hip-Hop 30:38 – How technology caused the death of regionalism Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Will Westerman and Luke Temple for chatting. Listing Joe Boyd’s most significant accomplishments as a producer, label owner, and music historian is a tall order. A short list of artists he’s worked with includes Nick Drake (heard here), Pink Floyd, Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, The Incredible String Band, R.E.M., Vashti Bunyan, Billy Bragg, and 10,000 Maniacs. Additionally, he was the founder of Hannibal Records, the label responsible for bringing the term “world music” into the lexicon, as well as serving as a music producer for Warner Bros., where he collaborated with Stanley Kubrick on the soundtrack of A Clockwork Orange and 1972’s Deliverance. His most recent work is as the author of White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s, as well as And the Roots of Rhythm Remain: A Journey Through Global Music, which came out in 2024. On this episode, hear how songs by Fats Domino, Fairport Convention, and Carlos Gardel shaped his sensibilities. Boyd will be a part of this year’s Big Ears Festival taking place in Knoxville, TN in March of 2026.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We caught up with unique indie artist Robert Deeble to talk about his new release “The Space Between Us” coming out February 6th. Roberts story driven lyrics and production have a classic vibe with a modern twist. Robert Deeble's spirit-infused lyrics are paired with a subtle, minimalist style that echoes old folk heroes like Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake. His first album, released with his band, Days Like These, was a critical success and featured a duet with Victoria Williams, "Rock A Bye." Days Like These never performed outside of the L.A. area and disbanded soon after their first release. His second album, a solo effort entitled Earthside Down, was released in 1998 and featured the production work of Anthony Arvizu and Stephen Hodges (best known for his drum work with Tom Waits). They helped augment Deeble's spare sound with cellos, timpani, gongs, and electronic elements, creating a sound that treads a line between folk and ambient music. ~ Stacia Proefrock, Rovi Robert's links www.hyperfollow.com/RobertDeeble www.Youtube.com/@Robert.deeble About Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris The Music Matters Podcast is hosted by Darrell Craig Harris, a globally published music journalist, professional musician, and Getty Images photographer. Musicians recount the strange and unexpected story behind the making of your favorite albums. Nick Drake released 3 relatively unheralded albums in his short lifetime and only decades later became a household name thanks to one savvy music supervisor at an ad agency. The guys get together and discuss retuning your guitar constantly, never changing your strings, and the bridge on the river Kwai.Join us on Patreon to continue the conversation and access 50+ bonus shows!https://www.patreon.com/1001AlbumComplaintsJoin our Mailing List here: https://linktr.ee/1001albumcomplaintsEmail us your complaints (or questions / comments) at 1001AlbumComplaints@gmail.comListen to our episode companion playlist (compilation of the songs we referenced on this episode) here:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3Ij5WngVhyDkAwWv4aNP3v?si=b496a37fc0734fb0Listen to Pink Moon here:https://open.spotify.com/album/5mwOo1zikswhmfHvtqVSXg?si=u8Fvj0dKQtKOYUL0eSOiaQIntro music: When the Walls Fell by The Beverly CrushersOutro music: After the Afterlife by MEGAFollow our Spotify Playlist of music produced directly by us. She talks to us here from her home in Nashville about … … early inspirations - Dylan, Donovan, Joan Baez, Peter Paul & Mary, Buffy Sainte-Marie – and her love of Sandy Denny, Bert Jansch, Nick Drake and ‘60s British folk … playing Delta blues for tips at Andy's in Bourbon Street in 1971 … her sudden favourite Beatle switch – “Paul … then George!” … her Dad's Ray Charles and Hank Williams records … seeing jazz pianist Sweet Emma Barrett in Preservation Hall in the ‘60s and Hendrix at a New Orleans sports arena … the effect of her stroke in 2020 and having to re-learn the guitar – “I tend to write in G now as it's the easiest chord to play” … the allure of medieval murder ballads, “far too dark” for most Americans ... songs she always plays live (one by Neil Young) … finding her tribe in Nashville – “when I arrived people asked, ‘What church do you go to?' not ‘Do you go to church'?” … being “a quarter Welsh” … and the song she wrote about her president in 2018 – 'We have slow-danced with the devil/ We have swallowed the liquid of his lies' - and the new version she's just recorded. 2026 tickets here: https://www.lucindawilliams.com/tour Order World's Gone Wrong here: https://30tgrs.ffm.to/worldsgonewrongHelp us to keep The Longest Conversation In Rock going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Hosted on Acast. The shorthand reference for a wrestler not being used on TV is that they're "sitting in catering." They're sitting in the back, eating some food, while other wrestlers get the spotlight and the glory. Just in time for Thanksgiving, Andrew is joined by returning guest Sean Flynn to hunker down in catering and chow down on songs about food or have food in the title. Artists played include System of a Down, Adele, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Mac Miller, Nick Drake, King Crimson, Harry Styles, and more. Load up your plate and save room for dessert, this episode will have you stuffed to the gills with delicious entertainment.Theme song: "Hemispheres" by Silent PartnerBluesky: @MusicoftheMat / @justandrewAll VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordDonate to Music of the Mat and other VOW podcasts: VoicesofWrestling.com/DonateAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The BONUS TRAX are here to start your week off on some kind of foot. Following the latest 'sode of SURFACE NOISE, our panel of physical media maestros discussed if they've ever found a reissue definitively better than an original, what is the best Nick Drake album (cue that beautiful poll footage), and Grooveseeker is helping us wind down the show with his latest dance with VMP and owed compensation sprinkled in with other tidbits of vinyl goodness. Hear that? No, it's not a "seasoned audiophile" knocking at your door. It's your turntable missing you. When you aren't listening to these BONUS TRAX, might be a good time to play another record. ⏬⏬⏬⏬ For more on host Concert Buddie: https://www.youtube.com/@ConcertBuddie https://concertbuddie.com IG: @concertbuddie For more on Arnaldo (fidelios_frequency): https://www.youtube.com/@fidelios_frequency IG: @fidelios_frequency For more on Jason Roxas: https://www.youtube.com/@JasonRoxas For more on Chris (Groove Seeker): https://www.instagram.com/thegrooveseeker IG: @thegrooveseeker Special guest this week, Jeff Parris (Vinyl Record Info): https://www.youtube.com/@vinylrecordinfo IG: @vinylrecordinfo For more information on Vinyl Community Podcasts: https://vinylcommunitypodcasts.com . . . . . "Only Hoping" There's real magic in the work of Al Nicol. There's also real magic that guided the work of Al Nicol but we'll get to that in a second. The Canadian-born singer/songwriter writes some of the most affecting compositions around. His lyrics are contemplative and thoughtful, his voice has a bold and breezy command and his pastoral compositions bring to mind everyone from Nick Drake to Ron Sexsmith. The path leading to Nicol's new album Only Hoping was shown to him through a visit with a shaman and once he received that knowledge, Nicol wasted no time in venturing into the unknown to discover the sonic riches that would form the record. I'll let him tell you that story, but let me say this: Only Hoping is a stirring blend of indie folk and spare psychedelia and it was helmed by MC Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger whose production effortlessly lifts the songs into the cosmos. Featuring members of Bonny Light Horseman, Erin Rae, and Taylor himself, Only Hoping finds Nicol kicking his songwriting into another otherworldly gear. It's a work of pure magic. www.alnicol.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (www.alexgreenbooks.com) www.bombshellradio.com (www.bombshellradio.com) IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
