In Acts 7:1-53, we consider Stephen's speech, the longest speech recorded in Acts, as a response of the gospel to traditional religion.
This speech is the longest recorded in Acts. In it Stephen brilliantly weaves together multiple themes from the Old Testament to turn the tables on his accusers just before he is martyred. (You can watch the message here.)

Morning: Job 1โ3 Job 1โ3 (Listen) Job's Character and Wealth 1ย There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. 2ย There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 3ย He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east. 4ย His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5ย And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, โIt may be that my children have sinned, and cursed1 God in their hearts.โ Thus Job did continually. Satan Allowed to Test Job 6ย Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan2 also came among them. 7ย The LORD said to Satan, โFrom where have you come?โ Satan answered the LORD and said, โFrom going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.โ 8ย And the LORD said to Satan, โHave you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?โ 9ย Then Satan answered the LORD and said, โDoes Job fear God for no reason? 10ย Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11ย But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.โ 12ย And the LORD said to Satan, โBehold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.โ So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. Satan Takes Job's Property and Children 13ย Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 14ย and there came a messenger to Job and said, โThe oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15ย and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servants3 with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.โ 16ย While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, โThe fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.โ 17ย While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, โThe Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.โ 18ย While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, โYour sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 19ย and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.โ 20ย Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21ย And he said, โNaked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.โ 22ย In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong. Satan Attacks Job's Health 2ย Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD. 2ย And the LORD said to Satan, โFrom where have you come?โ Satan answered the LORD and said, โFrom going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.โ 3ย And the LORD said to Satan, โHave you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason.โ 4ย Then Satan answered the LORD and said, โSkin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life. 5ย But stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.โ 6ย And the LORD said to Satan, โBehold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.โ 7ย So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8ย And he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes. 9ย Then his wife said to him, โDo you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.โ 10ย But he said to her, โYou speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?โ4 In all this Job did not sin with his lips. Job's Three Friends 11ย Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They made an appointment together to come to show him sympathy and comfort him. 12ย And when they saw him from a distance, they did not recognize him. And they raised their voices and wept, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads toward heaven. 13ย And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great. Job Laments His Birth 3ย After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. 2ย And Job said: 3ย ย ย โLet the day perish on which I was born,ย ย ย ย and the night that said,ย ย ย ย โA man is conceived.โ4ย ย ย Let that day be darkness!ย ย ย ย May God above not seek it,ย ย ย ย nor light shine upon it.5ย ย ย Let gloom and deep darkness claim it.ย ย ย ย Let clouds dwell upon it;ย ย ย ย let the blackness of the day terrify it.6ย ย ย That nightโlet thick darkness seize it!ย ย ย ย Let it not rejoice among the days of the year;ย ย ย ย let it not come into the number of the months.7ย ย ย Behold, let that night be barren;ย ย ย ย let no joyful cry enter it.8ย ย ย Let those curse it who curse the day,ย ย ย ย who are ready to rouse up Leviathan.9ย ย ย Let the stars of its dawn be dark;ย ย ย ย let it hope for light, but have none,ย ย ย ย nor see the eyelids of the morning,10ย ย ย because it did not shut the doors of my mother's womb,ย ย ย ย nor hide trouble from my eyes. 11ย ย ย โWhy did I not die at birth,ย ย ย ย come out from the womb and expire?12ย ย ย Why did the knees receive me?ย ย ย ย Or why the breasts, that I should nurse?13ย ย ย For then I would have lain down and been quiet;ย ย ย ย I would have slept; then I would have been at rest,14ย ย ย with kings and counselors of the earthย ย ย ย who rebuilt ruins for themselves,15ย ย ย or with princes who had gold,ย ย ย ย who filled their houses with silver.16ย ย ย Or why was I not as a hidden stillborn child,ย ย ย ย as infants who never see the light?17ย ย ย There the wicked cease from troubling,ย ย ย ย and there the weary are at rest.18ย ย ย There the prisoners are at ease together;ย ย ย ย they hear not the voice of the taskmaster.19ย ย ย The small and the great are there,ย ย ย ย and the slave is free from his master. 20ย ย ย โWhy is light given to him who is in misery,ย ย ย ย and life to the bitter in soul,21ย ย ย who long for death, but it comes not,ย ย ย ย and dig for it more than for hidden treasures,22ย ย ย who rejoice exceedinglyย ย ย ย and are glad when they find the grave?23ย ย ย Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden,ย ย ย ย whom God has hedged in?24ย ย ย For my sighing comes instead of5 my bread,ย ย ย ย and my groanings are poured out like water.25ย ย ย For the thing that I fear comes upon me,ย ย ย ย and what I dread befalls me.26ย ย ย I am not at ease, nor am I quiet;ย ย ย ย I have no rest, but trouble comes.โ Footnotes [1] 1:5 The Hebrew word bless is used euphemistically for curse in 1:5, 11; 2:5, 9 [2] 1:6 Hebrew the Accuser or the Adversary; so throughout chapters 1โ2 [3] 1:15 Hebrew the young men; also verses 16, 17 [4] 2:10 Or disaster; also verse 11 [5] 3:24 Or like; Hebrew before (ESV) Evening: Acts 7:1โ19 Acts 7:1โ19 (Listen) Stephen's Speech 7ย And the high priest said, โAre these things so?โ 2ย And Stephen said: โBrothers and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, 3ย and said to him, โGo out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.โ 4ย Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living. 5ย Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child. 6ย And God spoke to this effectโthat his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years. 7ย โBut I will judge the nation that they serve,โ said God, โand after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.โ 8ย And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs. 9ย โAnd the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him 10ย and rescued him out of all his afflictions and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household. 11ย Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food. 12ย But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit. 13ย And on the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh. 14ย And Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five persons in all. 15ย And Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, he and our fathers, 16ย and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem. 17ย โBut as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt 18ย until there arose over Egypt another king who did not know Joseph. 19ย He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, so that they would not be kept alive. What do you think it would be like to have a biopic made of your life? A biopic is a movie made about someone's life story. I recently watched Ford v Ferrari, which is a biopic of Carroll Shelby, a car designer, and Ken Miles, a British race car driver, building the Ford GT40 to beat the Ferrari racing team at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a long and difficult endurance race in France. Shelby is played by Matt
Old Testament: 1 Samuel 15โ16 1 Samuel 15โ16 (Listen) The Lord Rejects Saul 15ย And Samuel said to Saul, โThe LORD sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore listen to the words of the LORD. 2ย Thus says the LORD of hosts, โI have noted what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way when they came up out of Egypt. 3ย Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction1 all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.โโ 4ย So Saul summoned the people and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand men on foot, and ten thousand men of Judah. 5ย And Saul came to the city of Amalek and lay in wait in the valley. 6ย Then Saul said to the Kenites, โGo, depart; go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.โ So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7ย And Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt. 8ย And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword. 9ย But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves2 and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction. 10ย The word of the LORD came to Samuel: 11ย โI regret3 that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and has not performed my commandments.โ And Samuel was angry, and he cried to the LORD all night. 12ย And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning. And it was told Samuel, โSaul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself and turned and passed on and went down to Gilgal.โ 13ย And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, โBlessed be you to the LORD. I have performed the commandment of the LORD.โ 14ย And Samuel said, โWhat then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?โ 15ย Saul said, โThey have brought them from the Amalekites, for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice to the LORD your God, and the rest we have devoted to destruction.โ 16ย Then Samuel said to Saul, โStop! I will tell you what the LORD said to me this night.โ And he said to him, โSpeak.โ 17ย And Samuel said, โThough you are little in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel. 18ย And the LORD sent you on a mission and said, โGo, devote to destruction the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.โ 19ย Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you pounce on the spoil and do what was evil in the sight of the LORD?โ 20ย And Saul said to Samuel, โI have obeyed the voice of the LORD. I have gone on the mission on which the LORD sent me. I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have devoted the Amalekites to destruction. 21ย But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.โ 22ย And Samuel said, ย ย โHas the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,ย ย ย ย as in obeying the voice of the LORD?ย ย Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,ย ย ย ย and to listen than the fat of rams.23ย ย ย For rebellion is as the sin of divination,ย ย ย ย and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry.ย ย Because you have rejected the word of the LORD,ย ย ย ย he has also rejected you from being king.โ 24ย Saul said to Samuel, โI have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25ย Now therefore, please pardon my sin and return with me that I may bow before the LORD.โ 26ย And Samuel said to Saul, โI will not return with you. For you have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel.โ 27ย As Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore. 28ย And Samuel said to him, โThe LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29ย And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.โ 30ย Then he said, โI have sinned; yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may bow before the LORD your God.โ 31ย So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul bowed before the LORD. 32ย Then Samuel said, โBring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.โ And Agag came to him cheerfully.4 Agag said, โSurely the bitterness of death is past.โ 33ย And Samuel said, โAs your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.โ And Samuel hacked Agag to pieces before the LORD in Gilgal. 34ย Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul. 35ย And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the LORD regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel. David Anointed King 16ย The LORD said to Samuel, โHow long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.โ 2ย And Samuel said, โHow can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.โ And the LORD said, โTake a heifer with you and say, โI have come to sacrifice to the LORD.โ 3ย And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.โ 4ย Samuel did what the LORD commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, โDo you come peaceably?โ 5ย And he said, โPeaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.โ And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6ย When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, โSurely the LORD's anointed is before him.โ 7ย But the LORD said to Samuel, โDo not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.โ 8ย Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, โNeither has the LORD chosen this one.โ 9ย Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, โNeither has the LORD chosen this one.โ 10ย And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, โThe LORD has not chosen these.โ 11ย Then Samuel said to Jesse, โAre all your sons here?โ And he said, โThere remains yet the youngest,5 but behold, he is keeping the sheep.โ And Samuel said to Jesse, โSend and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.โ 12ย And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the LORD said, โArise, anoint him, for this is he.โ 13ย Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah. David in Saul's Service 14ย Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the LORD tormented him. 15ย And Saul's servants said to him, โBehold now, a harmful spirit from God is tormenting you. 16ย Let our lord now command your servants who are before you to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre, and when the harmful spirit from God is upon you, he will play it, and you will be well.โ 17ย So Saul said to his servants, โProvide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me.โ 18ย One of the young men answered, โBehold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the LORD is with him.โ 19ย Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, โSend me David your son, who is with the sheep.โ 20ย And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul. 21ย And David came to Saul and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer. 22ย And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, โLet David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight.โ 23ย And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him. Footnotes [1] 15:3 That is, set apart (devote) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); also verses 8, 9, 15, 18, 20, 21 [2] 15:9 The meaning of the Hebrew term is uncertain [3] 15:11 See also verses 29, 35 [4] 15:32 Or haltingly (compare Septuagint); the Hebrew is uncertain [5] 16:11 Or smallest (ESV) New Testament: Acts 6:8โ7:60 Acts 6:8โ7:60 (Listen) Stephen Is Seized 8ย And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. 9ย Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen. 10ย But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking. 11ย Then they secretly instigated men who said, โWe have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.โ 12ย And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council, 13ย and they set up false witnesses who said, โThis man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law, 14ย for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.โ 15ย And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel. Stephen's Speech 7ย And the high priest said, โAre these things so?โ 2ย And Stephen said: โBrothers and fathers, hear me. 20ย At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God's sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father's house, 21ย and when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. 22ย And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds. 23ย โWhen he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel. 24ย And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian. 25ย He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand. 26ย And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and tried to reconcile them, saying, โMen, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?โ 27ย But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, โWho made you a ruler and a judge over us? 28ย Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?โ 29ย At this retort Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons. 30ย โNow when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush. 31ย When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord: 32ย โI am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.โ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look. 33ย Then the Lord said to him, โTake off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34ย I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.โ 35ย โThis Moses, whom they rejected, saying, โWho made you a ruler and a judge?โโthis man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36ย This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years. 37ย This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, โGod will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.โ 38ย This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us. 39ย Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt, 40ย saying to Aaron, โMake for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.โ 41ย And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands. 42ย But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ย ย โโDid you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices,ย ย ย ย during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?43ย ย ย You took up the tent of Molochย ย ย ย and the star of your god Rephan,ย ย ย ย the images that you made to worship;ย ย and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.โ 44ย โOur fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. 45ย Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David, 46ย who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.1 47ย But it was Solomon who built a house for him. 48ย Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says, 49ย ย ย โโHeaven is my throne,ย ย ย ย and the earth is my footstool.ย ย What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,ย ย ย ย or what is the place of my rest?50ย ย ย Did not my hand make all these things?โ 51ย โYou stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52ย Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53ย you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.โ The Stoning of Stephen 54ย Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him. 55ย But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56ย And he said, โBehold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.โ 57ย But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together2 at him. 58ย Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59ย And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, โLord Jesus, receive my spirit.โ 60ย And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, โLord, do not hold this sin against them.โ And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
