Locked on BYU for August 29, 2018 began with the news that came out Tuesday afternoon that BYU has scheduled a football series with longtime regional rival Wyoming (3:22). Locked on BYU host Jake Hatch explains why the series is a good thing for the Cougars and digs into why he believes pursuing a formal scheduling agreement, not membership, with the Mountain West Conference would be in BYU's best interest. In the second segment of the podcast, an interview with BYU cornerback Beau Tanner was on the show (16:00). He explained what went into his returning to the program after announcing he was leaving the team, how his transition to playing on defense has gone, what he expects now that he's in the two-deep and explaining exactly how fast he can run on the gridiron (spoiler - it's very fast). In the final segment of the show, Hatch addresses some of the listener questions submitted on Twitter by listeners. He talked about potential surprise contributors this season (27:58), how much the previous offensive staff may have affected Tanner Mangum's play (29:57) and addressed the talk surrounding defensive tackle Wayne Tei Kirby (31:32) Learn more about your ad choices. Locked on BYU for August 28, 2018 began with Kalani Sitake's comments during his first gameweek press conference of the season on Monday. The BYU football program released their post-fall camp depth chart on Friday evening so Monday's episode of Locked on BYU is a deep dive into the depth chart and what Jake Hatch noticed. He began with the offense in Segment 1 (1:58) where Tanner Mangum won the hotly-contested quarterback battle and will be on the field when the Cougars face Arizona on Saturday night. A look at the injury-depleted fullback position, wide receiving core, tight ends and the center spot were also topics of conversation, among others. In Segment 2, Hatch took a look at the defensive side of the ball as well as some special teams notes (12:04). Two surprise risers at the defensive tackle position to compete with the presumed contributors on the interior of the defensive line dominated the segment. There was also talk about the cornerback spots, which are long on athleticism but short on experience and production. Hatch also talked about the three-headed monster BYU has at safety and why he's unsettled about BYU's punt game right now.The show wrapped up with "Quick Hits," where the #8 BYU women's volleyball team's 2-0 start to the season was discussed as was the tough loss on the road for the women's soccer team at #9 Texas A&M. Hatch also took a moment to talk about longtime BYU football commentator Marc Lyons, who announced that he would be retiring at the end of the 2018 season (22:16). Learn more about your ad choices.
