Some of Louisville's highest level sports teams are facing serious financial realities, which we discuss on this week's Access Louisville podcast.First, we chat about Racing Louisville FC, the city's National Women's Soccer League franchise, which is looking for an equity investor. According to a story from ESPN, Soccer Holdings, LLC — the owner of Racing Louisville FC — is seeking an equity partner to keep the team competitive in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). A representative with Soccer Holdings told ESPN that its chairman, John Neace, was not interested in giving up controlling ownership or moving the team. Right now both Racing Louisville and Louisville City FC are locally owned, via Soccer Holdings. We discuss the implications of taking on outside investment — from positive outcomes (like higher caliber players) to negative outcomes (such as selling the team.)In a separate sports business story, we also chat about the financial consequences of Name Image Likeness rights and salaries for college athletes. Leaders at the University of Louisville have sounded the alarm about the lack of sustainability for situation. On this week's show, we also talk about a sweeping new plan for a $500 million development at the former Colgate-Palmolive Co. plant in Clarksville, Indiana. The plan would turn it into a mixed-use development, known as the Clockworks, which will have a large hotel and sports venue. We chat about a developers plans for a downtown-like area in Prospect. And we talk about the latest with the Louisville Zoo. When NIL opened up, everyone rushed to build the marketplace — collectives, payment vehicles, deal flow. Nobody asked who the athlete actually was or what they'd do when the money hit. Stephen Bienko, former Air Force Academy and Villanova athlete and founder of 42U, has been inside college athletics long enough to see what got left behind. Where you're from doesn't just shape you — it frames how you understand power, loyalty, and loss.Bun B is Houston to the core. Jeffrey Sledge carries New York City wherever he goes. And for Tom Frank, everything starts in State College, Pennsylvania — a town where fall Saturdays felt sacred, Penn State football felt pure, and Happy Valley felt like a place untouched by the rest of the world.Today's guest, Jay Paterno, grew up at the center of that belief system. As a former Penn State assistant coach, trustee, writer, and the son of the late Joe Paterno, Jay lived inside one of the most revered cultures in college sports — and then watched it unravel in public. He speaks openly about legacy, leadership, media narratives, and what it costs to stand inside a storm you can't control. Not from a distance, but from inside his own family. This isn't just a backward-looking conversation. Jay takes the same clear-eyed approach to the modern game — NIL, the transfer portal, revenue sharing, gambling, donor influence — and explains why college athletics is no longer what it pretends to be. His new book - BLITZED! The All-Out Pressure of College Football's New Era - pulls back the curtain on a system stretched to its limits, where pressure, money, and identity collide every Saturday. This episode isn't about defending the past. "I played the game different because I had too. I only knew one way." -- Matt Baty, former Div. I athlete and Entrepreneur The NCAA ruled college sports with an iron fist for decades-- it was unconstitutional. NCAA wants control. "The student athlete -- to me, the regulations need to be around the student“ states Matt Baty, former Senior Associate Athletic Director for the University of Kansas. It's clear that the NCAA wants control. In June 2021 the Supreme Court ruled 9 to 0 in the NCAA v. Alston that the NCAA rules violated the Sherman Antitrust Act. And the term NIL was born! (and for some reason, Name Image & Likeness is confusing the hell out of people) It's also giving athletes opportunities to profit and through those profits they create opportunities for many more people. Matt Baty was a student athlete at the highest level. He worked for one of the greatest programs in college athletics at the highest level. He coaches kids of all ages to get the best out of each one of them so that they can improve their lives. And congratulations Coach on your first Kansas State baseball Championship at Trinity Academy. If you really want control, teach an individual the disciplines so that they can go on and become successful in their own life.
Some love him. Some hate him. Some love to hate him. Some hate to love him. He is never shy to share his opinion. And he is never boring. The co-owner and founder of The Field of 68, JEFF GOODMAN returns to the podcast. Jeff weighs in on what he perceives to be the historically weak class of 2026 and why so many top college coaches aren't on the recruiting circuit like they used to be.We also dig in on the current state of money in college basketball and how the balance of power continues to shift. Then, we take a deep dive on Coach Darian DeVries and what has impressed Jeff as he has gotten to know Coach DD better. We talk about why Coach DD can succeed where Woody and Archie failed before him. And we get into what his expectations are for Indiana this season and he gives us his off-season grade for IU.Controversial at times, but Jeff Goodman has given his 10,000 hours to the game of covering college basketball and we welcome his perspective to the show.In addition, I take some time to pay tribute to an IU legend, Bob Hammel, who passed away this week.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

For years he tormented IU fans with his sarcastic wit and blunt honesty as a national recruiting analyst for 247. But no one could question his knowledge, connections or insight. Then, he crossed the line from analyst to become the director of recruiting for Micah Shrewsberry at Penn State before following Micah to Notre Dame for the last two years. Today's guest is none other than BRIAN SNOW.In this week's episode Brian gives us his perspective on the current state of college basketball in the world of revenue sharing and the changing world of NIL. Brian breaks down which jobs might now be the best in the country and we talk about Indiana's place in the ever-changing landscape.Brian breaks down what it was like to recruit against Indiana and what the overall perception is of the Indiana program while also getting into specifics on why it just did not work with Archie and Woody and why it very well could with new head coach Darian DeVries. Brian is a guy who does not beat around the bush and calls it like he sees it. Some of which is VERY positive for IU and its future while he also brings up some areas of potential concern. It is a wide-ranging conversation that covers a lot of ground with a guy who has the unique experience of being a national analyst and also a guy who was in the trenches recruiting for a power 4 school. Sure, we love to bust his chops, but can't argue with the man's knowledge! Big time college sports have distorted the intellectual mission of colleges and universities for decades—and we're in a particularly volatile period as athletes organize themselves into unions and demand a share of the riches that they've created with their labor, as well as the fashioning of a system that makes intercollegiate athletics increasingly indistinguishable from professional sports. The “Transfer Portal,” the “Name/Image/Likeness” deals that athletes sign with third parties, and now direct payments to athletes on top of their scholarships (which typically cover tuition, housing, and health care) create a Brave New World for universities, perhaps a kind of crossing-the-Rubicon moment. We're joined by Rus Bradburd, a writer who spent 14 seasons coaching college basketball, followed by16 years as a university professor, in conversation about his subversive and hilarious novel, Big Time, as well as the state of the field.
A guest appearance over 30 years in the making, the Hysterics are delighted to welcome the Indiana Pacers very own Jeremiah Johnson to the show. Of course the discussion covers JJ's long tenure with the Pacers as a producer, sideline reporter and pre & post game host, hearing his insights and experiences of the last decade, all leading up to this magical playoff run and how the franchise finally got back to the finals. But this episode goes even further back… all the way back to 1990's Peru, Indiana where Jeremiah's dream of covering his local sports teams was born alongside his childhood pal and public access television partner in crime, one Mr. Ward Roberts. That's right, it's a Channel 19 (aka Tiger Television) reunion for the ages you don't want to miss!!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
