Highly-touted transfer portal quarterback Sawyer Robertson announced his commitment to play for the Baylor Bears on Twitter Tuesday. Robertson comes to Baylor from Mississippi State, where he attempted just 11 passes for the Bulldogs in his freshman season in 2022. As an elite recruit out of Lubbock Coronado (TX), Robertson looked every bit like a quarterback who would excel at the next level. Standing at nearly 6'4" and 200 pounds, he certainly has the build of a true signal-caller. While Robertson can put mustard on his throws, he really picked teams apart in the mid-range passing game in high school. While not throwing the ball very deep, he had great accuracy and poise, something that should go a long way in the offense Jeff Grimes runs at Baylor. In his Coronado career, Robertson threw for over 12,000 yards and 146 touchdowns to just 22 picks on 65% passing. Based on the numbers and the great tape he put out in high school, he had more than a few major college football programs seeking his signature this winter after he put his name into the portal. The Baylor Bears are still early in the college football offseason process, but coach Dave Aranda says January is the month they plan to bring in a transfer portal quarterback.  As Hudson Card and Jack Plummer and even long shots like Grayson McCall have committed elsewhere, the Bears should turn their attention to Louisiana-Monroe quarterback Chandler Rogers. Rogers combines all the skills that made Baylor an effective offense in 2021 and what made Jeff Grimes such a sought-after offensive coordinator alongside Zach Wilson at BYU. Rogers is a legitimate dual-threat quarterback who thinks pass first.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LinkedIn LinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. Blake Shapen closed the 2022 football season much worse than he opened it. As murmurs of the quarterback's competency heightened, his performance declined. Parlay that with Kyron Drones transferring, and Dave Aranda, Jeff Grimes and Shawn Bell have another complicated offseason ahead. Going by the numbers, here's a look at Baylor's only remaining scholarship quarterback: In September, Shapen started his season with seven touchdowns, one interception and 773 passing yards. Few questioned the Big 12 Championship quarterback at this juncture in the season, but his honeymoon was up. In November, with everyone expecting Shapen to have developed into a seasoned quarterback, it all fell apart. The redshirt sophomore threw for 783 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions on 27 more passes than he threw in September. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Baylor had every opportunity to play spoiler to TCU's season, but fell short as TCU hit a FG as time expired to go on to win 29-28. Baylor heads to Austin this week for maybe the final time (at least for awhile) to face the Texas Longhorns. Texas needs to win to keep their Big 12 title hopes alive, but will count on Kansas to knock off Kansas State in order for that to happen. Scotty Swingler joins Please Bear with Me this week to discuss the gut-wrenching loss to TCU. The guys will run through the final few drives of the game and why Baylor's offense wasn't able to secure 1 first down to secure the win. The Bears played well enough to win on defense holding TCU well below their season scoring average, but Baylor was unable to play complimentary football. Scotty and Travis then give their thoughts on the play of Blake Shapen and the offense behind Jeff Grimes. It will be interesting to see where the Bears go from here on offense. Finally, we wrap up with a preview of the matchup vs the Texas Longhorns and why Scotty still isn't sold on this Texas team. Travis talks his Bear Necessities and Scotty adds it will be crucial to keep Bijan Robinson in check. Both think the Bears have the ability to escape Austin with a win. Baylor wraps up it's regular season on Black Friday and hopes to ride off into the sunset on a high note. Baylor football has boasted Dave Aranda at its helm for three seasons, two of which have come with Jeff Grimes as the offensive coordinator. Grimes has garnered plenty of critical acclaim as the leader of the Bears' offense, even getting looks for the Auburn head coaching vacancy and being listed as a Broyles' Award watchlist member. Baylor fans, though, are calling for his head. Many Baylor supporters want to see him gone. So, what is in store for Grimes? Hopefully its nothing more than remaining at Baylor as the offensive coordinator. The man who created Zach Wilson and brought Baylor's offense to a Sugar Bowl with Gerry Bohanon at quarterback is not in danger of losing his job, despite what armchair quarterbacks may think. Grimes is safer than safe. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LinkedIn LinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. Lee opens the show by taking an unwarranted shot at Grant to cover up for his lack of show prep. They then dive into Billy Bowman's health and the amount of snaps he played vs. Iowa State. Lee thinks he'll be back starting and playing a bunch this week against Baylor (1:30). Jovantae Barnes is a game time decision this week. Eric Gray will once again be super important this week and it appears we have discovered that UCF transfer RB Bentavious Thompson is a non-factor on this team (10:05). Lee was really hard on Woodi Washington last episode. Well, Lee was wrong to be so critical and Grant was right (18:00). C.J. Coldon is still not playing very many snaps. Freshman Gentry Williams looked good in very limited playing time vs. ISU. It also seems like they've tightened up the DB rotations, and what happened to Justin Harrington and Kani Walker (24:05)? OU's a short favorite against Baylor, but the Bears may be a lot better than their record indicates. Lee likes what he's seen from Blake Shapen, even though he didn't want to like him. Grant says Shapen has been up & down this year. OU may be able to make some plays with special teams this Saturday (31:40). Jeff Grimes is a really good OC, but Baylor does have tendencies on offense that OU could possibly recognize and anticipate certain plays and pass routes. Grant says Alex Grinch's system was horrible against Grimes' system (42:20). Lee thinks the OU offense has an opportunity to steal some yards against Baylor. Grant wants the Sooners' offense to throw it around the yard on Baylor's secondary (49:05). Does anybody care about the first CFP rankings (58:20)? We take a look at the Big 12 slate, which includes an intriguing OSU-Kansas matchup from a betting perspective. And are oddsmakers telling us to hammer Iowa State against WVU? Grant shares a betting story about his time in the free state of Iowa last weekend (1:03:05)? We make our weekly picks. Games include Oregon St.-Washington/Tennessee-Georgia/Texas-Kansas St./Clemson-Notre Dame/Wake Forest-NC State (1:14:00). Dave Aranda has bounced back from a bad first year at Baylor. Baylor football finally did it — it won a game. Yes, that is dramatic and the win was against Kansas, but Kansas is a top-25 caliber team. Let's not overlook how big this win is for a Baylor program coming off of two consecutive losses. Worse yet, one of those losses was to West Virginia. West Virginia is not good. This win is great. Oh, and then there's some Baylor fan stuff we have to take care of. Drake and Cameron have recently stumbled upon a Twitter account that has some remarkable takes — really good stuff. Maybe Baylor should forfeit the rest of its games? Jeff Grimes should be fired? Blake Shapen is a pompous ass? This is what we're hearing. Let's see if it's true. Then Dave Aranda joins — how fun! In the wake of Josh Fleeks transferring from Baylor's football team, Jeff Grimes has become a topic of contention for many keyboard warriors. Dave Aranda's second-year offensive coordinator helped lead Baylor to a Sugar Bowl victory last season, but that seems lost on some Bears supporters. Pinning Fleeks' transfer and claiming Baylor is facing excruciating offensive woes, some Facebookers have taken to the site to tarnish Grimes' name.  Will this go anywhere? Will Jeff Grimes lose his job? Will Aranda be in search of a new right-hand man? No. Absolutely not. There's just no way. It won't happen. Grimes has an offense that totaled 450 yards against Oklahoma State. Sure, a pitch when backed up to your own end zone is a bad play call, but that's not a fireable offense.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Blake Shapen played his best game of the season. Dave Aranda and Jeff Grimes drafted up a game plan that Shapen turned into 345 passing yards. He also threw two scores. What's more, the team totaled over 450 yards of offense and held Spencer Sanders to less than 200 yards passing. Baylor lost by double-digits. Oklahoma State is simply a better football team than Baylor. There are plenty of excuses to be made, and the rate of fourth-down conversions along with a pitch play that resulted in a safety is bad. But Baylor pretty much played to its potential. The secondary is shaky. The wide receivers aren't elite. The offensive line is not what it was last season. The Baylor Bears return home to McLane stadium to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys after defeating Iowa State 31-24. It seems the Bears were able to learn from the trip to Provo earlier this year and take out the Cyclones on the road in Ames. Drake Toll of Locked On Baylor joins Please Bear with Me to discuss the Iowa State game. Travis and Drake don't think the score was indicative of how the game really went. The Bear's were in control of this game from the start and Iowa State couldn't get anything going in the rushing game. Baylor also was able to intercept Iowa State QB Hunter Dekkers twice for their first 2 INT's of the year. Travis thinks the Bears have turned a corner. Blake Shapen was dismal enough against BYU that Baylor's coach Dave Aranda admitted to not having confidence in the passing game. The Bears ran the football 52 times simply out of necessity. As that is obviously not a winning recipe, Baylor fell in the hostile road environment. Fast forward to Saturday's game against Iowa State, and everything seems to have changed. Shapen grew up. The Louisiana native completed 19-26 passing for 238 yards and three touchdowns. It was far and away his best offensive output this season, and he earned himself a 188 QBR for the performance. That helped Baylor to a 31-24 win over the Cyclones. Shapen was an X-factor in keeping Jeff Grimes' offense churning all day long. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Dave Aranda got his second quality road win as Baylor football's head coach with a 31-24 defeat of Matt Campbell and Iowa State on Saturday. In the win, the Bears took Aranda's road record to 4-8 overall. Sure, that still is not an elite record, but this win is one that gets the program back on track. While Aranda has been pressed about his team's struggles on the road at recent press conferences, it was apparent that players like Blake Shapen handled the 65,000 Iowa State fans at Jack Trice Stadium much better than the raucous environment at BYU two weeks ago. Against BYU, Baylor ran the ball 52 times to take the ball out of Shapen's hands. Against Iowa State, Jeff Grimes dialed up a great gameplan and the young quarterback delivered. He notched 238 yards on 19-26 through the air to accompany three passing touchdowns. Oh, and Shapen had no interceptions. How is that for performing on the road? Baylor football faces one of its toughest tests of the season in week two against BYU in Provo, Utah. Today's episode of Locked On Baylor is a crossover with Jake Hatch, the host of Locked On Cougars. Drake and Jake begin the show by breaking down the Baylor game versus UAlbany and talking weaknesses seen from the Bears. On the flip side, the guys talk Blake Shapen and his dominance under Jeff Grimes. He's ready for the next step. The show then features the same analysis of BYU after its 50-21 drubbing of South Florida last week. Beating Gerry Bohanon by 29, the Cougars have a lot of confidence coming into the Baylor game. The Big 12 may have more parity than ever in 2022. With teams like West Virginia and Kansas State being wild dark horses while Oklahoma and Texas aren't predictable in the slightest, the league is wide open for someone to rise to the top and win it all. Will that be in the Baylor Bears? Drake joins Josh Neighbors of Locked On Big 12 to preview the Bears' football season and how Dave Aranda and company will stack up against the field. And in a year where anyone can win, Drake thinks it will come down to the trenches. Baylor's offensive and defensive lines are a part of a premier group of elite units in college football. With returners like Connor Galvin and Jacob Gall on the offensive side, while the defense brings back Siaki Ika and Gabe Hall, Baylor will have the best-combined front in all of football. That might just be objective. The questions, then, come from the secondary and receiver positions. How can Dave Aranda and Jeff Grimes develop those two groups? When considering the loss of Jalen Pitre in the secondary and Tyquan Thornton in the receiving corps, there is much to prove for this year's team if they want to win via those two categories. Austin Novasad, a star quarterback in the class of 2023 from Dripping Springs, Texas, committed to Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears very early on. That was then, though, and this is now. As the now four-star has gotten offers from Stanford, Texas Tech, TCU, Houston, SMU and others, offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes, quarterback coach Shawn Bell and Aranda have to continue recruiting Novasad even after his commitment. Drake is joined by Sports Illustrated's John Garcia Jr. to talk Novasad's skill and how he's being courted.  Keeping the topic rolling, Novasad's signing brings up a point made by listener Stephen from Virginia — how many quarterbacks on a roster is too many? That question comes to mind when Novasad enters a room that features C.J. Stroud, Kyron Drones and Blake Shapen. John makes the case that four quarterbacks is a fine number to hold, but it typically means that one player needs to go.  Lastly, Drake lobs some softball's up to John in the realm of Nick Saban, Deion Sanders and Jimbo Fisher. From how the feud arose to the responses by Fisher and Sanders, John makes the case that the entire fiasco will not greatly affect recruiting for any teams involved. He'd also still commit to play for Saban, if one day given the chance.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The Baylor men's tennis team knocked off Stanford in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament after wild performances from Adrian Boitan and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi. Michael Woodson's team is headed to the Elite Eight in Champaign, Illinois for the third straight year, and the head Bear joins the show to talk about the electric win over Stanford and preview this week's match against Tennessee. Woodson stays on board in the second segment to offer a unique perspective on what it's like to coach at a private, Baptist university in Baylor. From recruiting players worldwide to selling recruits on the team, Woodson breaks down how Baylor can out-recruit teams like Florida, Ohio State. TCU and Tennessee. Citing the university's commitment to excellence, Woodson says Dave Aranda, Nicki Collen and Scott Drew motivate his team to meet Baylor's championship standard. Lastly, Baylor football has landed its 10th commitment of the 2023 class via Dawson Pendergrass. Dawson, a Texas native, is a 3-star athlete who plays primarily running back and defensive back. He rushed for 2,000 yards and 25 scores as a junior last season. Will Dawson be an impact player moving forward for Aranda, Eric Mateos and Jeff Grimes? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Dave Aranda of the Baylor Bears football team is the best young coach in America, and you don't even have to take Drake's word for it. Josh Pate of CBS Sports and 247 joins the show to talk about how he sees Aranda as the top dog in the sport under 45 years old. From his defensive philosophy to hiring Jeff Grimes to implement the wide zone, he has shown that winning the Big 12 championship and Sugar Bowl is sustainable. Josh stays around to talk about the decision from Aranda to name Blake Shapen the starting quarterback over Gerry Bohanon, who subsequently transferred to USF. Josh says that this move solidifies Aranda as a counter-culture coach in the nation, and it shows how he values players over the program. Josh also helps calm Drake's fear that the Baylor football team will never win a national championship. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Blake Shapen was named the starting quarterback for Dave Aranda and the Baylor football team in 2022 — but is the third-year letterman all-conference caliber? From offensive line play to scheme under Jeff Grimes, Drake is joined by Cameron Stuart to analyze how high Shapen's ceiling is next season and if he can take over the Big 12 as the best quarterback in the league. He certainly has the potential to be a Zach Wilson-type for Grimes and company, but that's going to take a stellar performance from the entire staff and all personnel. It has also been released that Cincinnatti, BYU, Houston and UCF will enter the conference in 2023-2024. This means the Big 12 will harbor 14 teams for a couple of years if Texas and Oklahoma really stick around until 2025. What kind of intriguing matchups could this present and what new school is the most exciting to add? Drake and Cam break it all down. Lastly, there are a couple of new faces on Nicki Collen's squad next season as Dre Edwards of Kentucky and Jana Van Gytenbeek of Stanford are coming to Waco. The hosts give insight on what Baylor women's basketball is getting in these two athletes and how they could contribute right away. Bridge's dad, Cory, joins the show to talk about Jalen's recruiting process in the portal, why he chose Baylor and how he makes a team stacked with LJ Cryer, Adam Flagler and Flo Thamba a national championship contender. Bridges takes Baylor to a whole new level.  John Garcia Jr., the head of recruiting for Sports Illustrated, then joins the show to break down a couple of Bears who can be stars for Dave Aranda next season. Starting with Armani Winfield, Baylor has found a big, athletic and explosive player in Winfield who can create chunk plays. Winfield gives Jeff Grimes and Gerry Bohanon the liberty to throw a ball up and ask him to go get it.  Garcia then talks how Kaian Roberts-Day can make an instant impact for the team at tight end, receiver or even running back next season. He compares his size for his position to Derrick Henry — which obviously says a lot. Roberts-Day can be an instant contributor for Grimes as an athlete who can play most any skill position on the offense. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Baylor Bears men's basketball player James Akinjo took the Big 12 by storm and jolted to an All-American caliber campaign after transferring from Arizona. With Covid-19 adding seemingly endless eligibility to college basketball players' time in the NCAA, will Akinjo remain at Baylor next season? Even more importantly, will he fit into Baylor's scheme with the new Bears coming in and old Bears sticking around? Cameron Stuart joins host Drake Toll to answer those questions from both sides of the coin. As for Baylor football, where does Dave Aranda go to find his next running back? With the loss of Abram Smith and Trestan Ebner, Jeff Grimes is left with a void to fill with Taye McWilliams, Sqwirl Williams, Josh Fleeks or another player yet to be named. Maybe another linebacker is in the fold. And here comes Matt Rhule in the news again — for all the weird reasons. The former Baylor football coach went viral on Twitter this week after posing in a photo with other NFL head coaches in a questionable get-up. The coach was marred in controversy after former Baylor player Chris Platt Jr. released a tell-all about Rhule ensuring the receiver did not transfer from Baylor to Houston.
