Mike Easterlin Elektra Records Fred Meyers has worked with some incredible people as a Promotion Man. Mike Easterlin who now co-heads Elektra Records joins LA Lloyd and Fred as our guest. Mike worked with Fred early in his career. He explains how he transitioned from radio to records, bringing Elektra back after it had pretty much folded as a label, how bands and artists receive a gold or platinum status for their singles and albums in the modern streaming era. In addition, Mike answers LA Lloyd's question regarding the necessity to release full albums instead of just singles. Then Fred puts Mike on the spot to talk about the controversial 360 deals with artists and record labels. Fred + Mary said - we need a truly "black swan". Mary said, yes, Fred - a really insidious spawn - to instill fear by our name - Trump! Fred said - they're playing our song - let's - get-it-on - let's "spawn". 9-months later - in 1946 - little "Don" was that "spawn". Fred + Mary then said, well now, we're on the verge of a new & scary "dawn". Then Fred looked out the window & saw some kids trekking through his front yard. Whereupon Fred screeched - get off my lawn - before I send for James "Sonny" Cohn. Fred ruminated - with lil Don - once he gets down - it'll all be gone! Then Fred & Mary continued their mah-jong. Meanwhile, lil Don - went down the street - & with his clothes on - dived into the dirty pond. He saw his reflection in the water & said - I'll be a real Don some day - way more nastier & memorable than the movie Don - Don Corleone. So, as it turned out - lil Don turned out to be the spawn that morphed into the black sawn that ushered in a whole new dawn - The dawn of the dead - the truly dead - the walking dead - the talking dead - the sulking dead - the skulking dead - the dreaded dead - the embedded dead - the retread dead - the never-get-out-of-bed dead - the velveeta spread dead - the after all is said dead - The kind of dead - that says -  let's just seal off all true reality from this world - and let's just hurl - hurl our own shit all over y'all - from one end to the other. So, it was that Don became the only song - the only song heard from the lawn - the White House lawn. Like a fog - it crept in on little cat's feet - and - before you knew it - by the followsng dawn - it was just on

Legendary Manga Translator Fred Schodt honours us by becoming our first major guest to do the Roundtable in this special sit down taped last Saturday afternoon at Anime North We begin with Fred and Mike looking back on his first visit to Anime North back in 1998 (the second one), and a panel they did together about History in Anime and Manga. And how Mike first told him about Rurouni Kenshin during that panel (3:30) Then Fred talks a little bit about the honours he has received from the Japanese Emperor (Order of the Rising Sun: Gold Rays and Rosette) and the Japan Foundation, and how in receiving the latter he ended up meeting now Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako a year and a half ago, and how he was a fan of Astroboy (9:05) We then start to talk about two of his Anime North panels, first about his friendship with Astroboy’s creator, Osamu Tezuka relaying a few stories about him (17:35) Then we talk about his panel about the Four Immigrants Manga which he published in 1998 (around the time of his first AN appearance). Fred gives a quick biography of Henry Kiyama, how he came across his work, and how he became very close friends with the Kiyama family. Also we talk about the recent musical adaptation of the book (24:50). In the process of the conversation Mike recalls some stories of his own grandfather (34:27) We then give a preview of Fred’s final panel about his own thoughts on manga translation, the history, and where it stands today. Which we’ll talk about in episode 12 (38:32). Mike then brings up Fred’s lecture at the Japan Foundation after AN ’98 on the actual manga culture in Japan then, and what it might be like today in light of digital consumption (40:21) The conversation ends off with Fred’s reaction to seeing Anime North 21 years later as we watched con goers pass by the AN Office’s Display room (52:00). We tend to think of most investors as rational beings who think through each situation and look for the best economic solution for a given investment. But if that were true, there would be very few good deals on the market. There must be something else in play. The root cause of good deals is a human emotion called pain. There are two types of pain. There is acute pain. This is the kind of pain that results when you hit your thumb with a hammer by accident. In that moment, the throbbing pain in your thumb is all you can think about. Your child asking for an ice cream cone won’t get your attention. The phone ringing won’t get your attention. Your entire world is your thumb. That’s acute pain. The second kind of pain is chronic pain. This is when you have a pebble in your shoe. It’s annoying. You might limp a little or rotate your ankle a certain way to avoid the pain. But it’s not bad enough to consume you. It’s not even bad enough to get your focused attention. Chronic pain is not usually enough to cause people to take action. So what does this have to do with real estate? One of the fundamental human needs is for certainty. If a human is experiencing financial stress, they are probably experiencing uncertainty along with it. They might be able to pay the bills this week, but what about next month? What if there’s an emergency? Will they have the funds to cope with an emergency, even a small one? That feeds directly into their decision making process. Let’s look at a purely fictitious example. Let’s say Fred owns a couple of rental properties. His wife is undergoing medical tests and may have to take an extended medical leave of absence depending on the outcome of those tests. He has a decent amount of equity in the rental properties, but they have not been producing a lot of cash flow. In fact, he recently had to replace the water heater in one home, and the air conditioner in another. Then Fred gets the news that a tenant is going to be moving out. That’s going to mean spending more money on paint, cleaning, carpet replacement and dealing with at least a month of vacancy. Fred is feeling financial stress. Fred decides that he’s going to sell one of the homes. We think that investors make rational decisions that are based on maximizing investment returns. But in Fred’s case, his return on investment isn’t even on his radar. His over-riding concern is bringing certainty to the situation. That’s more important to him at that moment than maximizing his return. He is experiencing acute emotional pain. That pain isn’t real. The origin of that pain is his own mind. He doesn’t know what’s going to happen. His wife might be fine. He might find a tenant quickly who is looking for a home in a great location. But Fred is consumed with fear. His mind is projecting into the future all the things that could go wrong and he is experiencing them very vividly as if they are happening right now. Fred probably won’t even evaluate a spectrum of solutions to his financial predicament. He could refinance one of the properties. But he doesn’t know how much more equity he can pull from the property. He’s pretty sure he can get some, but will it be enough? He is likely to pick the first solution that will restore financial certainty to his life. The marketplace is full of vultures who are waiting to pounce all over guys like Fred and take advantage of them. They’ll play mind games with them and further exploit Fred’s fragile emotional state to get a lower purchase price. Fred is what the vultures call a motivated seller. Make sure you are sitting on some cash and have the ability to maintain financial certainty for yourself, and have the ability to restore financial certainty for someone else should they need it.
