Lunges are a cornerstone of healthy aging - building lower-body strength, improving balance, and supporting joint health. This episode is the third in our twenty-part series, Move for Life, exploring the intersection of longevity, strength training and movement. Miami-based fitness coaches Shebah Carfagna and Nate Wilkins contrast front, back, and side lunges, explaining how each targets different muscle groups and mimics gait to enhance functional movement.Shebah underscores posture, pelvic floor engagement, and proprioception as critical factors in reducing chronic pain and preventing falls, while Nate connects lunge training to real-world demands, from pickleball to travel, arguing that balance and foot placement are non-negotiable for injury prevention. We also discuss how integrating short, accessible sessions into everyday life - at home, in gyms, or even at airports - support longevity. You should seek medical advice before embarking on a new exercise. This episode is the second in our 20-part series, Move for Life, exploring the intersection of longevity, strength training and movement. -----This podcast is supported by affiliate arrangements with a select number of companies. Learn how to optimize hamstring recovery for peak performance with insights and key Q&A from Brian Duncan, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS. Q: Is fascial length more critical than strength for hamstring recovery? A: Fascial length is not necessarily more important than strength, but the body adapts from training, loading, and sprinting. However, sprinting alone is insufficient for optimal hamstring recovery. Q: How can fascial length be tested in athletic training (ATR)? A: Currently, there is no way to palpate fascial length. It can only be observed on MRI or ultrasound as imaging techniques improve. An NFL-funded trial is ongoing, examining hamstring injuries and investigating various factors with imaging across several colleges. Q: How does adjusting knee positioning impact hamstring rehabilitation? A: Varying the amount of knee flexion or extension can increase hamstring length and load depending on the specific area of the hamstring. Training hip extension can place more load on the proximal hamstring tendon. Most hamstring injuries occur at the myotendinous junction (proximal), while injuries within the muscle belly tend to heal better. Q: What are the challenges in hamstring rehabilitation for high-level athletes? A: The higher the level of competition, the more complex the situation becomes, often involving "more cooks in the kitchen." This raises questions about collaboration between different coaches and the athletic trainer. Communication and planning can be challenging in these scenarios, impacting hamstring recovery. Q: Is high-intensity sprinting the most important aspect of hamstring recovery, and what are the considerations for progression? A: High-intensity sprinting is considered most important, but a lack of planning may be an issue. There is a significant load difference between an 80% sprint and a 100% sprint, with a substantial increase in eccentric load at maximum effort. The length the hamstring travels between 80% and 100% sprint is no different. A gradual progression back into previous activities is often necessary for effective hamstring recovery. Running more than nine sprints in a session can lead to further hamstring injury. Q: Can AI, such as ChatGPT, replace athletic trainers? A: AI is only as effective as the user and the questions asked. For example, it can build a maintenance program. When asked to include high-speed running and eccentric loading, it then asked if a weekly microcycle was needed. Hopefully, it will not replace athletic trainers' jobs but instead help them to excel at them, especially in optimizing hamstring recovery. Q: What are the key takeaways for athletic trainers from this presentation on hamstring recovery? A: Athletic trainers should start eccentric training early (at a pain level less than 4/10) and incorporate sprinting (running) as soon as possible. It is also crucial to communicate with coaches to target at-risk position groups with maintenance plans throughout the season and to incorporate banded Nordic hamstring curls to maximize range of motion. Q: What is the role of maintenance programs in athletic training, especially concerning hamstring injuries throughout a season? A: Maintenance programs are vital throughout the season to prevent recurrences and soft tissue injuries. During SAC camps, the key is to prevent overtraining and identify athletes who don't self-regulate. Sprint training should occur early in SAC camp or during the day's workout before lifting. For in-season maintenance, hamstring work should be incorporated on match day and two days after, ideally 3-4 days before the next match day.

Warrior woman—welcome back. This is part two of our hypertrophy deep dive (if you missed the bangin' butt episode, go back and listen to that first). Today, we're moving down the chain—into your quads, hammies, and calves—so you can build legs that look like they train. This isn't just about lunges and leg presses. This is about movement quality, muscular tension, execution, and beauty. It's about finally understanding what it means to train legs properly, so you can build shape, strength, and confidence that people notice. And it's not about smashing yourself with circuits or chasing the burn—it's about training beautifully. If you've been training your legs but still aren't seeing definition—no shape, no pop—this one's for you. Because you're probably doing it like everyone else. And that's the problem. We go deep. Anatomically, strategically, methodically. You'll walk away knowing exactly how to grow muscle in your quads, hamstrings, and calves—and how to do it the Warrior way. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Hypertrophy = Length Under Load + Control Building muscle in your lower body requires deep range, slow tempo, and quality movement—not rushing through circuits. Train Legs With Structure, Not Chaos Random exercises and circuit-style training won't build the legs you want. You need structure, mobility, stability, and progression. The Three-Part Framework for Beautiful Movement: 1. Mobility – Can you access the right positions? 2. Stability – Can you control your body through them? 3. Strength – Can you load them with precision and power? Quads love deep squats, split squats, and leg presses—trained with tempo and control. Hamstrings thrive with hinge patterns like RDLs and leg curls—done slowly and intentionally. Calves matter—for aesthetics, balance, and performance. Stop skipping them. Combining multi-joint and single-joint exercises (e.g., squats and leg extensions) delivers the best growth results. If it's rushed, unstable, or ugly—it's not effective. POWERFUL QUOTES FROM THE EPISODE: “If the movement feels beautiful, it's because you're moving well. That's what builds a body you love.” “We're not chasing the burn—we're chasing execution.” “Women who have legs that turn heads? They move well. They own their training.” “Time under tension equals hypertrophy. Quality equals results.” “This isn't about smashing your legs until you can't walk—it's about moving in a way that works.”
Description In this episode, Dr. Jack Hickey, a leading researcher in hamstring injuries, shares valuable insights into the complexities of hamstring rehabilitation and injury prevention. He discusses the common misconceptions surrounding hamstring rehab, emphasizing the importance of understanding the adaptations targeted by specific exercises rather than simply mimicking injury mechanisms. Dr. Hickey also delves into the significance of hamstring muscle architecture, particularly the role of fascicle length as a modifiable risk factor for injury. He highlights recent research comparing the effectiveness of exercises like Nordic hamstring exercises and Romanian deadlifts in enhancing fascicle length. Dr. Hickey further explores his pioneering work in pain threshold rehabilitation, explaining how allowing low to moderate levels of pain during rehab can lead to better strength and muscle adaptation without delaying return-to-play timelines. He also touches on the fragility index as a measure of the robustness of risk factors associated with hamstring injuries. Throughout the conversation, Dr. Hickey underscores the importance of individualized rehab programs, incorporating both on-field and gym-based conditioning, and the need to prioritize fundamental principles such as load management and athlete well-being. He also provides a glimpse into ongoing and future research endeavors aimed at advancing our understanding of hamstring injury mechanics and prevention strategies. This episode is packed with practical advice and evidence-based approaches for clinicians, making it a must-listen for those involved in sports medicine and rehabilitation. Guest Jack Hickey is a leading researcher in the field of hamstring injuries. Jack is currently based at Maynooth University in Ireland, where he joined in 2023 as the first academic in the Department of Sport Science and Nutrition. Before that, he was a Senior Lecturer at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne and part of the SPRINT Research Centre, focusing on sports performance, injury, and rehab. His PhD centered on hamstring strain injuries and pain-threshold rehab – a body of work that earned him multiple national awards, including the ESSA Medal for best PhD thesis in Exercise and Sport Science.Beyond academia, Jack is an accredited Exercise Physiologist with over a decade of experience treating athletes from all levels—especially those dealing with hamstring injuries and ACL reconstructions. When it comes to the production of high-value food crops, California is, without question, a global leader. Plus, much of the state's thousands of acres of farmland lies within close proximity of Silicon Valley, where high-tech tools and solutions are endemic. And yet, many California farmers are struggling to continue their work, and agtech startups are increasingly looking beyond the state for customers and sectors to serve. So what gives? To answer this question, we asked Walt Duflock, Senior VP of Innovation at Western Growers Association on the show to help us connect the dots on why California's world-renowned ag and its state-of-the-art tech sectors are struggling to align. Policy plays a big role here, but shifting tides around agtech funding are also having an effect. For more information and resources, visit our website.
