Kyle Rodney v. Tim Garrett
What's the relationship between our energy consumption, our material footprint and our economies?Tim Garrett and I come to refer to these as “the holy trinity”. Tim is a Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Utah, and over two years ago, he joined me to discuss the thermodynamics of collapse, where he explained his research into the behaviour of snowflakes and how you could extrapolate the behaviour of economies and civilization using the laws of thermodynamics. He's back on the show to explain how we use our energy, the necessity of a surplus of energy and how all of this relates to a society's growth and health. In this conversation we discuss questions like: Will renewables facilitate an increased consumption of fossil fuels? Can we reduce inequality by reducing energy consumption? How can we organise a wave-like civilisation, which grows and decays within safe boundaries? Can we decline in order to recover before crashing completely? Get full access to Planet: Critical at www.planetcritical.com/subscribe
In this interview, Cory and Brian interview Tim Garrett. Tim is a KC Underground missionary but is also on staff with Frontiers, a mission organization taking the gospel to the nations. Primarily, Tim works with disciple-making movement leaders in East Africa. Tim joins the podcast this week to discuss how dreams and visions are often a part of gospel movement and poses the question, "Are we desperate for God to move in this way?" "When you get desperate, then you start crying out to God, 'Please, come!'" Next steps with the Underground: Subscribe to our newsletter Connect with us for Coaching Support the Underground

Welcome to episode 101 of Activist #MMT. Today I talk with Derek Ross on the basics of Georgism and its relationship to MMT. Derek's a Nova Scotia resident who's been a chorus member in theatrical productions for four decades, in shows such as "The Pirates of Penzance" by Gilbert and Sullivan. He and his wife also run a bed and breakfast. He was especially helpful in providing feedback for an introductory presentation I developed early this year. Unfortunately, it never came together, but it has many valuable concepts and analogies I still use today. I met Derek in the Facebook group Intro to MMT, which is very busy and has more than 6,000 people, and for which I am a moderator. (Here's a link to PART_TWO.) Derek first discovered Georgism and later the work of Steve Keen, which ultimately led him to MMT. A main insight of Georgism is that taxing land is a much more elegant way to make a system that's both fair and more difficult to exploit. Although humans can manipulate and destroy buildings, they can't eliminate the land those buildings are on. As an example, I have a friend who's a general contractor. He tore down an old house and built a new one for his daughter. However, he left one wall in the old building standing, which prevented it from being legally considered as new construction, thereby avoiding extra fees and newer regulations. Land as defined by Georgism is not just the Earth but conceptual, like internet URLs, and the bandwidth for television, radio, and cell-phones. Taxes, or rents on that land can be paid with money, such as interest for a bank loan and taxes for living in a country. They can also be paid with not money, such as by having to provide a certain amount of labor to the king each year, or a percentage of the harvest. Going beyond Georgism, Physics makes it clear that the most fundamental resource is energy. Resources – and we – are, essentially, forms of energy. In addition, all energy requires energy to find, gather, and process it. Three examples: Food must be grown, transported, stored, cooked, served, consumed, and cleaned up from. This requires energy Gold must be dug up from one hole and then put in another, such as a box or vault, so it can be protected forever. This requires energy Labor must be fed, sheltered, clothed, educated, protected, paid, entertained, etc. This requires energy Derek has provided several resources for those interested in learning more. You can find links in the show notes. Before the heart of our conversation, however, the first half of today's episode, part one, is about the non-economic topics of music and musical theater (I'm a classically trained singer), and then solar panels and electric cars. Part two, next week, is entirely academic. If you like what you hear, then I hope you might consider becoming a monthly patron of Activist #MMT. Patrons get super-early access to almost every episode. Patrons also get the opportunity to ask my academic guests questions, and they support the development of my large and growing collection of learn MMT resources. To become a patron, you can start by going to patreon.com/activistmmt. Every little bit helps a little bit, and it all adds up to a lot. Thanks. And now, onto my conversation with Derek Ross. Enjoy. Resources People to read and follow: Tim Garrett (his website on viewing the global economy through an energy lens) and Blair Fix. Not an entirely MMT-compatible source, but a valuable book: The Economic Growth Engine: How Energy and Work Drive Material Prosperity (consider reading the introduction) Kate Raworth's book, Doughnut economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist. This discusses how we have to take energy into account when we talk about the future of economics. Here's a presentation on the book by the author. Weird Al Yankovic songs: Hardware Store and Jerry Springer From Derek: "Here's a tough patter song from Ruddigore (retrofitted into Pirates), It Really Doesn't Matter. Bad recording quality but an excellent performance." Another Gilbert and Sullivan patter song: I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General from Pirates of Penzance. (Here's my #MMT parody of this song.)
Episode 177: SNAP into Fitness!! Tonight Misti and Tim Garrett join the Joe's to talk a little fitness! SNAP into it!!!
It’s always great to catch up with these guys and chat about all things coaching, powerlifting and strength training. The last time I hosted The Powerlifting Roundtable was back in episode 87, so it was about time I got this group of coaches back together. In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Chris Kershaw, Dan Bedford and Tim Garrett. These guys bread and butter is strength training, whether its powerlifting, strongman or just generally getting their clients stronger. With lockdown limiting peoples access to equipment and disrupting those clients who may have had competitions on the horizon, we chatted about strength training during lockdown and strategies Chris, Dan and Tim have implemented with their clients. We also covered the journey of strength training from the very first time a client gets involved with coaching. Tim Garrett is an extraordinary athlete. Not content with swimming some of the world's most famous and gruelling waterways, Tim tags on runs and rides of hundreds of kilometers to his swims. For instance, Tim has completed the Arc2Arch: Run - 87 miles from Marble Arch in London to Dover, Swim - The English Channel, Bike - 181 miles from Calais to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. He is one of only two people to have completed the Arc2Arch and Uberman, an event in which you swim from 21 miles from Catalina Island to Los Angeles (a major event in itself!), cycle 400 miles to Badwater basin, the lowest point in North America, and then run 135 miles through Death Valley before ascending 13,000 feet to Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the Continental United States. He plans his own ultra-endurance events through his company Another Level Performance. Apart from Australia's longest open water swim, he has also organised Hard Bastard, where you: Swim - 35 km from Palm Beach to North Bondi, Bike - 620 km to Mount Kosciuszko, Run - 162 km in the Australian Alps. He fundraises for The Heart Research Institute and unsurprisingly doesn't sleep much! His major aim is to tackle the North Pole. Really enjoyed this podcast! In this episode, I caught up with three powerlifting coaches who have coached complete beginners all the way up to national and even international level, as well as having a tonne of experience in competing themselves. Dan Bedford, Tim Garrett, and Chris Kershaw. These guys have been around powerlifting since I first started, having their lifters at a lot of competitions and all always performing well. With the sport of powerlifting growing so rapidly, and with a lot of information becoming more readily available, we thought it was a good idea to try and help people out by answering the questions sent in via Instagram. In this episode we chatted about common mistakes lifters make when getting involved in powerlifting and how to avoid them, as well a whole host of other topics. Economics is still built around the age-old factors of production – land, labour, capital and, perhaps, entrepreneurship. Yet, you can't run machines without power and you can't expect workers to function without food. So why isn't energy implicitly included as one of the key functions of the economy? Clearly it should be. In today's Debunking Economics podcast Professor Steve Keen explains how he is working with climatologist Tim Garrett and mathematician Matheus Grasselli to develop a new model, one that reflects the importance of energy in the functioning of an economy and the limits it places on global growth. The Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County has worked in the Memphis community since 1933 to give injured and abused dogs and cats a second chance at life. We provide a safe place to recover, nutritious food and outstanding veterinary care for an average of 100+ animals at a time. Our staff and volunteers provide training, affection and socialization to the animals in our care to help them be adopted successfully into new and loving homes. Our funding comes exclusively from private donations. HSMSC's community outreach and humane education manager Matt Womack dedicates much of his time to reaching out to the community to educate about preventing and reporting animal cruelty, proper animal care and how to help homeless animals. This includes visits to local schools, appearances in the media, and hosting a summer camp for 7- to 12-year olds each year, to name a few of our outreach efforts. OUR MISSION To offer refuge, medical care, nourishment and an opportunity for a second chance at life to injured and abused animals; To protect animals from cruelty, neglect, carelessness and ignorance; To foster public sentiment of humanity and gentleness toward animals and promote responsible pet ownership through humane education; and, To enhance the quality of human life through animal companionship. Tim Garrett is Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Utah who's research focus is the physics of clouds. Professor Garrett joins Steven to discuss his work, and model, which shows a consistent link between the global economy and climate change. Professor Garrett's model indicates the constant requirement of 9.7 Watts to support every $1000 (adjusted to the 1990 Dollar) means it is impossible to decarbonise the economy and prevent catastrophic climate change within six decades. Steven and Tim discuss why Jevon's Paradox supports this position and means that as we constantly strive for energy efficiency, ironically, the more energy we use. Steven is joined by Professor Emeritus of Arizona University, Dr. Guy McPherson. Guy is the worlds leading authority on Abrupt Climate Change leading to Near-term Human extinction. Guy believes the Environment will change so rapidly over the coming decade that the Earth will become Mars-like. Guy speculates that it will be highly unlikely the human species will survive. Steven and Guy cover positive feedback loops that could have already sent the earth past it's tipping point, including the effect of Methane and water vapour in the atmosphere. The science behind the claims and why it's too late to stop the inevitable along with recent news and research articles are highlighted to show the increase of extreme weather events and the records for climate change we (unfortunately) keep breaking. In the first quarter of the episode, Prof. McPherson does slightly misrepresent the work of Prof. Tim Garrett, for clarification, please listen to Ep 012 - A discussion with Professor Tim Garrett. Allow us to introduce Tracks, your new favourite music podcast. We are co-hosts Tim Garrett and Harry Williams, and we are really excited to finally be releasing our first episode. This episode was recorded way back in January, so it has been a long time in coming. Since then we’ve recorded another 5 episodes, done a lot of planning and a consumed silly amount of alcoholic beverages in order to make Tracks what we want it to be. We are, however, still very proud of this episode as a starting point. Our aim with this one was to give you, our lovely listeners, an insight into our music tastes in the form of an old, new, borrowed and blue song choice. Hopefully it will give you an idea of what to expect every Tuesday from now on – good music, laughs and gimmicky ideas for episode formats. Sounds fun, right?! Featuring Hinds, Mac DeMarco, Bon Iver and many more. We do not claim ownership of any of the music played in this episode. Our theme tune is Ice Cold by Audionautix and is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). Artist: http://audionautix.com/
