He's back and he did it!! Age group triathlete Paul Robinson returns to share his story of conquering Arch to Arc. You might remember that Paul was on the show at the beginning of September. At that point, he was waiting to start the Enduroman (Arch to Arc) challenge which is billed as the toughest triathlon in the world for good reason. Run 87 miles from Marble Arch to Dover, swim the English Channel (which is at least 21 miles and could be more due to currents), and then cycle 181 miles from Calais to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.   Only 59 athletes have ever completed the challenge. Paul also chose to swim without a wetsuit which only 6 of these 59 have done. I'll spoil the surprise . . Paul finished the event AND set a new record of 67 hours beating the record by over 2 hours.   I don't think that this conversation can truly convey how tough a challenge this was for Paul. You will, however, get a real insight on how a tough mindset can help you overcome almost anything. In this episode we will chat with Paul and his father Dave about:   Dealing with the cold while running, swimming and cycling during the night It's all about mindset F1 style pit stops Amazing restorative benefits of 10-minute power naps Using maths problems to pass the time The huge value of a support team Dave Robinson gives insight on the conflict of being a supporter and a loving parent   To find out more about Paul please visit the following sites:   The world's hardest triathlon 30min YouTube video - Arch to Arc world record Just Giving charity link - Stand Against MND   If you fancy a crack at Enduroman, check out their website **To get a free copy of my personal daily mobility routine, please click HERE** To contact Beth regarding Life Coaching, please visit her website at BethanyWardLifeCoaching.uk. Inside, two terrified women screamed, as John Steed, the M4 Rapist shot one of his hostages dead. King Louis Philippe unveiled an iconic Parisian monument, the Arc De Triomphe, on 29th July, 1836. But, due to fears of an attack, only 11 people attended the event - six of whom were soldiers.  Originally commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 after his victory at Austerlitz, the Arc was inspired by the ancient Roman triumphal arches. But progress was slow. By 1810, only the base of the pillars was completed, leading to a makeshift wooden and canvas structure for his wedding procession.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how the design evolved during some incredibly rocky decades of French history; discover how the wide boulevards around it ‘curbed' further insurrections; and consider what would have become of London's equivalent, Marble Arch, if it had passed through quite so much political upheaval…  Further Reading: • ‘History of the Arc de triomphe' (Official Website): https://www.paris-arc-de-triomphe.fr/en/discover/history-of-the-arc-de-triomphe • A Guide To Visiting Arc De Triomphe (& How To Get Inside) (MSN, 2023): https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/tripideas/a-guide-to-visiting-arc-de-triomphe-how-to-get-inside/ar-AA1hMQBS • ‘Paris' Arc de Triomphe wrapped in fabric 60 years later' (CBS, 2021): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPQBeKOsphs Love the show? In our latest look into postwar history: decriminalising homosexuality. In 1967 — for the first time in more than 400 years — two men over 21 were legally allowed to have sex, in private, with each other. But the fight for equality was very far from won. Campaigner Peter Tatchell and Hugo Greenhalgh, whose book The Diaries of Mr Lucas: Notes from a Lost Gay Life is published this month, tell Ros Taylor what life was like for gay men in the late 20th century. It's a story of pickups in Marble Arch, vicious homophobia, and illegal liaisons with the Kray gang. • “It was an absolute goldmine of lost queer history.” – Hugo Greenhalgh • “The gay scene went from being a community of sorts to something far more commercial in the 1970s and 80s. It left Mr Lucas behind. He was always a man of the shadows.” — Hugo Greenhalgh • “In 1983 I fought the notorious Bermondsey by-election… the dirtiest, most violent and definitely most homophobic election in Britain in the 20th century. It was like living through a low-level civil war.” – Peter Tatchell • “The 1990s coincided with a huge coming out of LGBT+ people. That mass coming out was key to helping change hearts and minds.” – Peter Tatchell Buy The Diaries of Mr Lucas: Notes from a Lost Gay Life through our affiliate bookshop and you'll help fund [name of podcast] by earning us a small commission for every sale. Bookshop.org's fees help support independent bookshops too. Saying that this episode's guest holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon run dressed as a nut, doesn't even begin to do justice to the absurd number of ridiculously difficult physical challenges that former Major in the Royal Army Medical Core, Sally Orange, has undertaken in her on-going quest to raise awareness of mental health issues.  This is a woman who has run the hardest land race in the world, the brutal Marathon de Sables, and the Siberian Ice Race in Russia. Who has skied 250km across the Artic Circle, and done the Arch to Arc triathlon - running from Marble Arch, swimming across the Channel, then cycling to the Arc de Triumph in Paris. Who has led the first ever all female wounded, injured and sick team to complete the word's most challenging cycling event, the Race Across America, and is the only woman to have run seven marathons in seven continents in seven days. Awarded an MBE in the King's first Birthday Honours list this year for services to charity and mental health, Sally talks with powerful honesty about her own struggles with severe mental health problems and how her experiences, and her desire to help anybody else going through anything similar, have been the driving force behind all the astonishingly difficult challenges she has done and continues to do. Gary Shaughnessy has done a lot in the world of running, from completing 40 marathons to raising thousands of pounds for charity. But perhaps his greatest achievement came in finishing the Arch to Arc Triathlon, dubbed the hardest triathlon in the world. Starting at Marble Arch in London and heading to the heart of Paris and the Arc de Triomphe, the event consists of an 87-mile run, swimming the English Channel (Gary swapped in a gruelling row for the swim) and 181-miles of cycling. What makes Gary's success even more remarkable is that it came after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2015. The triathlon was one of a series of incredible challenges, including several marathons and ultra, that Gary has carried out in aid of Parkinson's UK, a charity of which he is the Chair of the Board of Trustees. In between he even found time to set a new world record for the longest distance ever run three-legged in 24 hours. He's not intending to stop yet though, with a host of events booked for 2023, including marathons in Newport, Paris and Madrid, cycling from Liverpool to Ukraine, swimming from St Kitts to Nevis, and a team cycle ride from Dover to Barcelona to attend the World Parkinson's Coalition. In a wide-ranging conversation, Running Tales spoke to Gary about everything from health and wellbeing to his role at England Athletics, where he is the Chair of the Board...   ---------------------------------- You can sponsor Gary Shaughnessy for his 2023 events at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/gary-shaughnessy2 and find more information at https://www.garyschallenges.com/ Subscribe to our Substack newsletter at https://runningtales.substack.com If you like this episode please consider donating to help us keep going: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/stepforward

Tony Fletcher reunites with musician/composer Jim ‘JG' Thirlwell, DJ Wendy May, and Dimple Records boss Brian O'Neill, all of whom he first met in the late 1970s when they bought copies of Jamming! off him while they were working behind the counter at the Virgin shops in Oxford Walk, Notting Hill Gate, and Marble Arch respectively. During that thriving post-punk period the entire Virgin chain served as a needed middle ground between the pioneering independents like Rough Trade, Probe and Revolver, and mainstream high street shops WH Smiths and Woolworths. Without the autonomy Virgin granted its record buyers, a lot of independent labels, emerging bands and street fanzines would not have enjoyed such a wide profile. In this conversation, the four discuss the role of the record shop during that period, the freedom the staff enjoyed at Virgin, and offer specific anecdotes and reminiscences about serving the likes of Elvis Costello, Boy George, Paul Simonon, David Coverdale and more. Additionally, Jim recalls how an encounter with a customer helped point him on a different creative musical path, Wendy talks of how she ultimately received the classic ultimatum - "it's your job or your band" - and Brian talks of how his love of selling records has inspired him to start a new independent label in his retirement years.JG Thirlwell is at Website http://www.foetus.org https://jgthirlwell.bandcamp.com/ https://www.instagram.com/jgthirlwell/ and https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100045377091477Wendy May can be found on Instagram and Facebook.Brian O'Neill's label Dimple Discs is at https://dimplediscs.bandcamp.com/ His Microdisney documentary project is https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/microdisney-filmFor details about the book events mentioned on this episode visithttps://www.facebook.com/theTonyFletcher/eventsThe Best of Jamming!: Selections and Stories from the Fanzine That Grew Up 1977-86 is published by Omnibus PressTonyFletcher.netOmnibusPress.com 'The Jamming! The first question to ask when you're preparing your pitch is, what do you want them to understand? Next is what's your hook, your personal story that will get and hold their attention. In this powerful episode, Devo Cutler-Rebenstein answers these questions as well as discussing how to get buyers to want to work with you, gap financing, digital marketing tools and more.Devo Cutler-Rubenstein's passion for storytelling and artistic expression brought her to California Institute of the Arts where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Television. While at Cal Arts she was selected to receive a grant from the Scottish Arts Council to attend Edinburgh Arts. Her documentary about this unique educational setting inspired her documentary film EDINBURGH ARTS, which aired in part on Grampian Television. Returning to Cal Arts, she had an opportunity to study with Alexander MacKenrick, where she wrote, produced and directed PEACOCK BLUES, a short film casting the as yet unknown Ed Harris and Annie Potts.Upon graduation Devo launched her career in the entertainment industry at Twentieth Century Fox, rising quickly up the ranks in story development. She was Director of Story Department for Sir Lew Grade's Marble Arch productions at CBS Studios. She helped design a new story department as Director, Literary Affairs at Columbia Pictures TV, and not long after became VP of Marketing and Promotion for Connoisseur Video. Simultaneously, she began to develop projects for theater under her banner New Play Productions and then partnered with Mary Saxon to form Cutler-Saxon Productions, with an eye to leverage small theatre as a vehicle for larger budget television and feature film projects.Currently as CEO and President of Noble House Entertainment, she continues to develop and produce multi-platform projects, in a career that has spanned over thirty years working within all aspects of the entertainment industry. She has developed over 500 projects under various production banners, including producing the feature film franchise THE SUBSTITUTE, for MGM, Live Entertainment and HBO, starring Tom Berenger and Treat Williams, respectively. Inspired by work she did with stand-up comedians coaching them on the development of one-person shows, she won a grant to co-produce and co-write with her husband, Scott Rubenstein (Star Trek: TNG, MacGyver, Night Court) the documentary NOT AFRAID TO LAUGH, about using comedy to heal cancer. The intimate documentary won The Communicator Award and was nominated for a Peabody Award, now archived in the Chicago Museum of Broadcasting for its "artistic excellence, social relevance and historical significance." As a narrative director, she helped out on another award-winning documentary, TELL ABOUT THE SOUTH, which aired on PBS; she helped cast and the documentary was shot entirely on locations in South Carolina and Virginia. Adapting a John Irving short story, she competed and won a grant from Chanticleer Films/The Discovery Program to write and direct a narrative short, which she co-wrote with her husband, Scott Rubenstein, who also exec produced; the short film starred Poppy Montgomery, Bill Forsythe and Tony Plana and won Best Film at Moondance Film Festival and aired on Showtime Television. A writer at her core, Devo continues to pursue a creative outlet as a published poet, short story writer, and as a member of the Writers' Guild of America, West. She has written and/or produced film and television projects for ABC, Columbia Pictures, FX, Showtime, MGM, Live Entertainment, Fries Entertainment, Interscope Entertainment, among others. Her desire to promote cultural diversity was acknowledged by a NALIP Screenwriting Fellowship, and in 2015, Devo fulfilled a lifelong dream and received a Master's in Professional Writing from the University of Southern California, Dornsife College of Letters, Arts & Sciences.

This is Phil Woodford in London and we're on episode 0317. Michael, that's episode zero THREE ONE SEVEN. MICHAEL A prime number edition! Very well spotted Phil! This is me - Michael Ohajuru - joining the show via Zoom this week and revealing that we have a very special guest with us today. It's my old friend Tony Warner. Hi there, Tony! TONY Hi Michael, hello Phil. It's good to be here on Five in the Eye! And I can reveal our top story this week is the death of Black historian Runoko Rushidi. We'll discuss his ideas and his legacy. PHIL For story number two, it's the war of words that has blown up over the role of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the RNLI, in rescuing refugees who are in trouble at sea. People continue to head towards the UK in boats out of desperation but are met with hostility. At a time when NATO's exit from Afghanistan looks set to herald a further humanitarian crisis. MICHAEL What's story number three? Well, Digby Jones - the former boss of the CBI - criticised former footballer and Olympics presenter Alex Scott for the way she pronounces her words on TV. It sparked a furious backlash. TONY For our fourth story, we're going glamping! Holidaymakers shelled out a fortune for what they were told was going to be a very posh campsite, but were horrified to find they were sharing basic facilities with other guests. PHIL And finally this week, it's the remarkable new tourist attraction that's heading for Stratford in East London. A gigantic, glowing orb that's the size of Big Ben! MICHAEL Now, that's one step up from the ‘mound' of Marble Arch! And that's this week's Five in the Eye!

MICHAEL Good morning! It's Friday, so that can only mean one thing: it's Five in the Eye day on Colourful Radio. This is me - Michael Ohajuru - welcoming you to episode 0316 of our weekly news review show. PHIL And this is Phil Woodford joining Michael via Zoom this week and revealing that our top story is going to be the Covid epidemic. As cases took an unexpected plunge in the past week or two, how positive can we be? And what about the government's suggestion that we might need to show vaccine passports for clubs, football matches or even to attend university? MICHAEL Story number two this week is the pronouncements of Prime Minister Boris Johnson about crime, clearly designed to excite Tory supporters. He wants named police officers for crime victims - something Labour Leader Keir Starmer has denounced as a ‘gimmick'. And he is also in favour of chain gangs of criminals working in the street in hi-viz jackets. PHIL And as a woman in south-west London was quizzed by cops over a large cash withdrawal to buy a car, we ask whether banks are becoming a bit too nosy about what we do with our own money. That's story number three today. MICHAEL And what's our fourth story? It's the exciting new landmark in the heart of London. Or… err… perhaps not. I've seen the now-famous mound of Marble Arch at first hand and confirm that it is somewhat underwhelming! PHIL And finally this week, if you feel like ordering a plate of chips, we wouldn't recommend travelling to the Serendipity 3 restaurant in Manhattan. The gold-plated snack will set you back… wait for it… $200. MICHAEL In Abbey Wood, you can pick up a portion of chips for half that price. What's the world coming to? And that's this week's Five in the Eye! ++++

Segundo as autoridades de Londres, o homem e a mulher ainda colaram a si mesmos no teto do trem, paralisando o serviço.
