Daniel SeidmanComposer & Co-LyricistDr. Daniel Seidman is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in New York City. Dan started playing in a band at the age of 12 at the Cafe Wha in Greenwich Village. At the age of 15, he toured the U.S. and Canada playing Hammond organ for Chubby Checker. He completed a year as a composition major at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1972-1973, and a B.A. in History from SUNY Binghamton. He received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1988, and subsequently joined the faculty at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) where he taught, practiced psychology, and did research for 30 years. He retired from Columbia in June of 2018. Fifth Avenue the musical originally grew out of Dan's combined interest in jazz and history. Discussions with a history professor Albert Fried about the immigrant experiences of the Irish, Jews, Italians and in more contemporary times, Blacks, Hispanics and the Chinese provided insight into the “dark side” of the American dream and its “underworld culture”. This is the story Fried tells in his book “The Rise and Fall of the Jewish Gangster in America” (Columbia University Press). After college, Dan began composing the music for "Fifth Avenue" while employed by the Shubert Organization in New York City. He met Susan Crawford, who wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics for Fifth Avenue, in 1979. They were married in 1984 and are now the proud parents of two grown sons. Susan CrawfordBook Writer and Co-LyricistMy theater life began at 13 in my hometown's Shakespeare Festival. It evolved into much acting from then into my 30's. It soon overlapped with an interest in playwriting, and I finished my first play at 24. Eventually writing overcame acting for me. For that I studied with Arthur Kopit and John Guare; lyric writing at the ASCAP workshop, and with Sheila Davis, and Dorothy Fields. Around that time I co-developed the continuity for Ned Sherrin for “Only In America” songs by Leiber and Stoller. It ran at the Roundhouse in London, and was a distant antecedent to what became “Smoky Joe's Cafe.” “Dollars to Doughnuts, a Comedy for the 99%” was my master's thesis in the CCNY Graduate Writing Program where I studied with Arthur Kopit. It was a finalist in the O'Neill Playwriting Conference the year it was finished (under the title "Lotto"). For the summer 2022 season, it was selected by Theatre for the New City's “Dream Up” Festival where it was workshopped and is now being submitted for production. My one-act "Place Settings" was selected for the Chain Theatre's 2023 Winter One-Act Festival, and is also available for production.R.K. Valentine's Day is approaching quickly, and another major American midwinter celebration, the Super Bowl, is just past. Chain restaurants gear up for both of them, each in their own way. Pizza concepts have long offered heart-shaped pies for Valentine's Day, but doughnut chains are following that lead and offering their core products in heart shapes too. Pat and Bret discussed how wings are the most popular appetizer ordered with pizza, making them perhaps the most common combination in American foodservice. They also discussed how invented holidays such as National Pizza Day are, in fact, great sales drivers, giving people a reason, no matter how small, to order something they love. For the podcast's interview this week, Bret interviewed Donnie Madia, co-owner of One-Off Hospitality in Chicago. He discussed the restaurant group's new catering arm, how his restaurants that were featured in the hit FX TV series "The Bear" benefitted from the exposure and his philosophy about the future of fine dining.

In this episode of Girl, You So Random, I had the pleasure of talking with Comedian, D'Marie born and raised in LA. She's a standup comedienne whose style of comedy is observational and definitely her own! She's performed at Hollywood Improv, Ice-House Comedy Club, Pioneer Dancer Awards (honoring the legendary “Original Lockers” Dance Group, presented by The Dancer Jo Foundation), and more! Studying under the “Comedy Teacher's Teacher,” Greg Dean, as well as the comedic legend and “King of Venice Beach,” Michael Colyar, D'Marie's act can range from her family, to her relationship and slight addiction to Randy's Doughnuts, all the way to exploring why men over 75 always seem to approach her - don't ask. She may be considered a millennial, but she's got a soul of gold which allows her to reach audiences both young and old. She believes that her stage presence, honesty, transparency, and desire to have and bring fun onstage are what truly stands out in her act. How can we bring wisdom to those with power and power to those with wisdom? If we were to step into elder hood and bring the best of ourselves to the table, could we create governance structures that would help to heal our cultural divides, create equity and guide is wisely through the coming crisis? Jenny Grettve believes we can and has set up a global council to make this happen. Jenny is a good friend of the podcast. She joined us in episode #228 to talk about designing and building a school along Doughnut economic lines and then again in episode #249 to talk about the evolution of a Mothering Economy based on the values of compassion and care for future generations. Jenny is an author, philosopher, systems thinker and designer, author of several books, most recently the Mothering Economy that we talked about the last time we met. Then, she was leading WhenWhen, a new feminist design agency that creates system demonstrators to test ideas generated by global researchers working with the climate crisis and sustainable life. She was still working there last November when Donald Trump managed to take the US Presidency again. Amidst all the shock and horror of that moment, I saw a post Jenny put up on LinkedIn, proposing the creation of a Global Council of Women as a way to bring forward the values that our world needs at this moment of total transformation. I signed up on the spot and then asked Jenny to come and talk to us about it, so that the idea might spread in the Accidental Gods spheres. And then as I was doing the reading for this episode, I found that Jenny had started the year in a new post - that she is now Head of Transformation at a European Council funded organisation called EIT - that's European Innovation and Technology - Culture and Creativity. Which means Jenny is now taking the wisdom of creativity right into the heart of the bureaucracy that sustains the super organism, at least in the EU. So here we are, considering the nature of wisdom and elder hood, how we might overcome the gender divides that so assail us in service to life - and how to bring creative ideas deep into the heart of machine. Please know that the Council is not only for women - the first meeting is exploring whole, healthy masculinity and how it can be prioritised in this world. Which feels like such an integral part of our thinking now. So please do join - the link is below. Prophecy Radio episode #127 finds Karen and Kristen back to discuss the next two chapters of Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods. We catch up on the board games we've played and loved recently (and tell a traumatic board game memory) before discussing the latest news from Rick Riordan and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Finally, we discuss chapters 24 and 25 of Chalice of the Gods. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:09:37) We decide not to worry about the D23 trailer since it has so little new footage for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. We are ready and waiting for a real Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 trailer, though. We do have some minor casting announcements to talk about. You can take a look at all the info on the minor casting right here. Timothy Simons as Tantalus, who keeps an eye on activities in Chiron's absence. Kevin Chacon has been recast as Chris Rodriguez We take issue with the article calling him a villain, though. Rosemarie DeWitt will be our C.C. (AKA Circe) Who is not to be confused with Calypso or any other water-related C-named goddesses Aleks Paunovic will be our Polyphemus, although we're not sure to what degree. If they had only cast him for his voice, they would have mentioned that in the announcement, right? Last, but certainly not least, we have our new non-book character played by Beatrice Kitsos … or is she?! Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:29:00) Chapter 24 starts with Percy waking up from a good old regular dream where all the gods were pregnant. And of course it was Annabeth sneaking in his window that woke him. She has a lot to tell him about what she learned about concetrated nectar from Juniper. Is this book influencing the show? Or is the show influencing this book? Percy gave good advice to Grover. Sally would not have a problem with Annabeth in Percy's room. She'd probably just make tea. Trusting moms are some of the best parts of supernatural-being-living-in-a-human-world stories. Annabeth Chase: Scheduler Extraordinaire! We share our favorite lines and moments. Time for chapter 25! And its a big one. Doughnuts to start the day, then time to plug noses and get to work. The menthol to koala/eucalyptus thing took a minute to process. Our trio gets split up by the drops of nectar. Of course Percy is in trouble the minute he's off on his own. Time to meet Gary! He has a very specific look, and its not a flattering one. The god of old age stole the chalice that stops people from getting old. It goes against the natural order of things. Since Percy is the only human to turn down immortality, Geras wanted to give him a chance to understand why this god would steal from Ganymede. Karen reminds us of that reference last week that makes a lot more sense now that we're in the know. Gary is not happy with Percy's reaction and is totally ready to turn him to gravedust. Percy wants to see if there's a deal to be struck. The challenge Geras throws down is not exactly what you would expect… Time to close things out with more favorite lines and favorite moments! Feedback No feedback this week, but we look forward to hearing all your board game recs for next week's episode! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 128, where we'll discuss the latest Percy Jackson news, along with Chalice of the Gods chapters 26 & 27. Social philosopher Roman Krznaric and renegade economist Kate Raworth explore how we can survive and thrive by looking to the past for clues on how to build more regenerative economic frameworks. Doughnut economics describes the social and planetary boundaries needed for all people to prosper within the means of the living planet. Studying historic examples through the lens of doughnut economics, Krznaric and Raworth find the environmentally safe and socially just space in which humanity and all other living things can flourish.

We'll start with a discussion about the seasonal and limited-time offerings before moving along the icing-caked conveyor belt to our ratings for a baker's dozen of core confections. We may unleash some kontroversies as we chat about the history of the Krispy Kreme chain and offer our opinions, but don't worry, we'll do our best to keep things sweet, light, and fluffy. Welcome to episode 74 of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives. In this installment, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach/journalist Jo Confino are joined by special guest Kate Raworth, the creator of Doughnut Economics, to discuss from spirituality to new economic thinking; individual, community, and planetary boundaries; putting ideas into practice; practicing true love and no self; avoiding the trap of fame; and much more.Kate shares her journey into reimagining economics; the encounters that shaped her vision; regenerative enterprises and the inspiring communities making new economics a reality; and the discoveries made after attending a Plum Village retreat with her family. Kate Raworth is the creator of the Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries, co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab, and author of the internationally bestselling Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think like a 21st Century Economist. She is a Senior Associate at Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute, and Professor of Practice at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. Over the past 25 years, Kate's career has taken her from working with micro-entrepreneurs in the villages of Zanzibar to co-authoring the Human Development Report for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New York, followed by a decade as Senior Researcher at Oxfam. Economics, when you go back to ancient Greek, literally means the art of household management.” “We need to create economies that are distributive by design, that share resources with all, that are regenerative by design, that regenerate the living systems, and that go beyond growth. That’s the essence of doughnut economics.” “A volition and aspiration is a nutriment. It’s an energy to help us keep going. And the Buddha also gives us another antidote: aimlessness, which is to help us have an aspiration, but not think that, once we’ve arrived and completed that aspiration, that’s when we finally touch happiness.” “Man is not our enemy. It is ignorance, it is discrimination, it is ideology.” “I have arrived, I am home.” “In the light of Plum Village teaching, that joy and happiness is not money, it is not success in wealth and in fame, but it is in the mindfulness that in this moment I have eyes to see, I have a family to love, I have a community to be with. I can forgive my parents, my ancestors, because I am their continuation. I am renewing them in this moment.” “I wrote a book, but actually it’s the practitioner, the people who want to try it and do it, that turn ideas on a page into a reality.” “The Buddha did not say that on the shore there’s no suffering. It’s how to be free, even in our suffering, how to still touch happiness while there are storms and misunderstandings.” “Don’t try to be the movement, join the movement.” “One of the chapters I wrote in Doughnut Economics is called ‘Nurture Human Nature', and it starts with looking at ‘rational economic man’, a character that is taught in mainstream economics; it’s the individual, the autonomous, atomized individual, self-interested. He’s got money in his hand, ego in his heart, calculating in his head, nature at his feet. He hates work. He loves luxury. And he knows the price of everything, and he can never get enough.” “The definition of economics is the management of scarce resources for unlimited wants, the self-interest. So the models we make of ourselves remake us. An economist called Robert Frank and his colleagues did research finding that students who go to university from year one to year two to year three of studying economics, the more they learn about rational economic man, the more they admire him, the more they value self-interest and competition over collaboration and altruism.” “Who we tell ourselves we are shapes who we become. And this is a critical insight, not just for economics, but for any discipline, indeed any art, any belief system that tells us who we are. It remakes us.” “If you were holding a tiny baby and their temperature hit 40 degrees, would you say, ‘You go, girl, you burst through that boundary.' No. You would do everything you can because when something is a living being, we know that life thrives within boundaries. Our bodies give us signals about boundaries all day.” “We’re all probably lightly sweating now because today’s going to become 40 degrees and our bodies will sweat trying to calm themselves down. Or we shiver when we try to warm up. Or our stomachs will rumble if we’re really hungry or we’re thirsty. So we thrive within boundaries and rules give us a freedom. And when those rules are shared and we know others are following those rules, it allows all of us to be free and to enjoy something, and to come out and be truly ourselves and vulnerable and open, because there’s a deep trust.” “I am a drop in a river and we’re going together and there’s no hurry and nowhere to get to.” “Practice first, theorize later.” “People in a place utterly know their context and know what would be useful and know what would be possible and what they have energy and excitement to try.”

The article delves into the growing ideological shift from economic growth to a focus on sustainability, as advocated by figures like Olivier De Schutter and Kate Raworth. Ron and Ed provide a critical analysis of the so-called degrowth movement and its potential impact on democracy, innovation, and individual freedoms. They discuss the concept of doughnut economics and how it aligns with broader trends in global governance, questioning the practicality and desirability of this shift. Tune in as they dissect the intersection of economics, environmentalism, and human rights, offering their own perspectives on what a growth-averse future might hold.
Tune in to Jill's exploration of the idea of identifying your “doughnut” as she uses her personal journey of temporarily giving up Instagram (her “doughnut”) as an example. Your “doughnut,” as she explains, is something that you are deeply attached to, something that you would be afraid to give up or that you feel you wouldn't be able to. It could be a habit or activity, a substance or a food, or even a digital distraction. Sharing her experience of temporarily quitting Instagram, she reveals that it was a decision that led her to unexpected lessons about her own habits and emotional needs. She discusses how this break from Instagram exemplified her dependency on social media for dopamine hits and the false sense of connection it provided, making her feel like she had genuine connections and friendships with people whom she really didn't. She also reflects on how stepping away from Instagram allowed her to recognize the volume of information being consumed on a daily basis and the unnecessary pressures that that placed on her life. Through this process, she discovered newfound peace and clarity, realizing that true connection and fulfillment come from within, rather than through external validation or endless scrolling. Listen in to gain insights into how identifying and temporarily giving up your own "doughnut" can lead to profound personal growth and lessons about yourself! Jill encourages you to think about what your own “doughnut” might be and how taking a break from it could reveal deeper lessons and benefits you might not have foreseen. Whether it's a food, a habit, or something else, this episode invites you to challenge yourself and embrace the possible change that could result from stepping away from your comfort zone!
