POPULARITY
The episode continues Jerry and Stably's deep dive into Huey Long by T. Harry Williams, covering the second half of the biography of the controversial Louisiana politician. Picking up after Long's first gubernatorial win, the discussion traces his aggressive consolidation of power, his near-impeachment, and the establishment of a political machine that blurred the line between populist governance and autocracy. Jerry and Stably emphasize Long's command over the state legislature and his manipulative use of patronage and state resources to silence opposition. They explore the contradictions in Long's character—his professed idealism versus his often ruthless tactics—and analyze how his charisma and direct appeals to the poor fueled both admiration and intense resistance. The hosts examine his tenure as a U.S. Senator, during which he maintained effective control over Louisiana politics from Washington, D.C. They note his increasing paranoia, use of bodyguards, and elaborate security measures. His “Share Our Wealth” program is given particular attention, with discussion about its radical proposals and how it positioned Long as a national political threat, especially to President Roosevelt. The episode also delves into Long's polarizing public image, his strategy to control media narratives, and his dramatic assassination. Jerry and Stably reflect on the legacy of Huey Long, drawing connections between his methods and modern populism, and debating whether his contributions to infrastructure, education, and wealth redistribution justify his authoritarian tendencies. The conversation closes with a sober assessment of the enduring relevance of Long's political style.
The episode features hosts Jerry and Stably engaging in a discussion about Huey Long: A Biography by T. Harry Williams. The conversation begins with Jerry expressing his frustration with the book's length and dense formatting, noting that it was difficult to obtain digitally. Stably acknowledges the challenge but defends the book's depth and significance. They proceed to explore the life and political career of Huey Long, the populist governor and senator from Louisiana, whose ambitions and policies made him one of the most controversial figures in American history. The discussion highlights Long's rise to power, his unconventional political tactics, and his ability to mobilize mass support through populist rhetoric. Stably emphasizes Long's role in reshaping Louisiana politics, particularly his efforts to expand social programs, build infrastructure, and challenge entrenched elites. Jerry, however, is more critical, questioning whether Long's authoritarian tendencies undermined the very democratic ideals he claimed to champion. They debate whether Long was a true reformer or a self-serving demagogue, referencing specific moments in his career, including his battles with corporations, his conflicts with political opponents, and his aggressive consolidation of power. The hosts also consider Long's national ambitions, discussing his Share Our Wealth program, which proposed radical wealth redistribution during the Great Depression. They analyze how his policies resonated with struggling Americans but also raised concerns about their feasibility and authoritarian implications. The episode concludes with a reflection on Long's legacy, debating whether his assassination cut short a dangerous trajectory or silenced a leader who might have reshaped American politics.

Join us for our celebratory year-end Michelle Meow Show special. We'll start with a conversation with local photographer/artist Harry Williams, who photographs the people of San Francisco. We'll explore human connections and how community engagement can preserve our dignity and compassion for each other. We'll end our program with a special performance by SNOWW. Then stick around for a fun reception and holiday cheer. About the Speaker Harry Williams says his work "is rooted in capturing the resilience and humanity of marginalized communities, presenting them in a way that commands attention and challenges perceptions." He spent more than a year photographing on the corner of Jones and Ellis Streets in San Francisco's Tenderloin district, a neighborhood known for its abundance of single-occupancy residence (SOR) housing and its association with drugs and crime. "This body of work speaks to more than one community; it reflects a reality familiar to cities and small towns alike, where certain neighborhoods undergo shifts that can displace the people who have long called them home. As these areas change, often becoming less accessible to those who built their lives there, a profound cultural and personal loss occurs. . . . Through these images, I seek to preserve the spirit and stories of these communities, highlighting their strength and significance in ways that demand respect and remembrance. Ultimately, I hope that these monumental images confront viewers with both the beauty and strength of communities often sidelined, making space for empathy, connection, and reflection." SNOWW is a celebrated Chinese artist whose talents span electronic music production, DJing, singing, and songwriting. She is the founder of Fake Gentle and The Hormones bands, as well as the creative force behind the E-Motion label. With her distinctive musical style and a keen ear for melody, SNOWW has emerged as an influential figure in the contemporary electronic music scene. In SNOWW's musical universe, the vast electronic soundscapes resonate like a storm of snow, seamlessly intertwining with her warm and evocative voice. Her work combines elements of Deep House, Chillwave, and classical music, crafting an immersive listening experience that feels both intimate and expansive. Her music takes listeners on a dreamlike journey, reflecting the harmony between the digital and natural worlds. As a devoted advocate for melody, SNOWW infuses her compositions with rich and intricate emotional layers. She brings a unique perspective to electronic and rock music, continually exploring diverse sound elements in her creations. In 2021 and 2022, SNOWW was invited to perform at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival for two consecutive years in its online showcases. College presidents don't work in a bubble and there are a multitude of competing priorities jostling for their time and attention on a daily basis. It can be an overwhelming job, but having a guiding purpose behind every decision a president makes, the teams they form and the long-term strategies they develop can help keep leaders on the right track. How do they know which areas deserve their attention and which should be delegated to talented team members? How do they know they are making the right decisions and doing good by their institution? When should they take risks? In this episode of The Key, Inside Higher Ed's news and analysis podcast, Donde Plowman, the chancellor at UT Knoxville, Harry Williams the former president of Delaware State University and the current president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall Foundation, and Jonathan Koppel, president of Montclair State University tell an audience at the Student Success US event how they keep their purpose front of mind as they lead their institutions. They share their experiences of making tough decisions, championing student success to stakeholders, lobbying for greater funding from legislators and striking out on paths unknown with new partners. Hosted by Sara Custer, editor in chief of Inside Higher Ed. This episode is sponsored by the Gates Foundation. Follow us on Apple Podcasts Google Podcasts Spotify
The best soul music in the land, a tribute to Harry Williams and Bloodstone.
What an honour to be joined by Ulster's most successful coach of the professional era, Harry Williams. Harry is the legendary coach of Ulster's 1999 European Cup winning squad who celebrated their achievement 25 years on this year. Loved speaking to Harry who is a brilliant leader, man manager and inspirational coach who will go down in history as the man who steered Ulster to their greatest day in the province's history.
In this episode we are joined by a very special guest, the man who saved pinball with a single shot, and who wrote the first published book on the history of pinball, Mr. Roger Sharpe.https://wedgeheadpdx.com/podcasts/ Link is to some bonus materials on our website to see all the games that we are talking about in this episode.Roger is a legend in the pinball world, most it well documented elsewhere, but he joined us on the podcast to talk about a different industry legend: the late great Harry Williams. Founder of the eponymous Williams Mfg. company, and the man who did more for pinball than any other single person in its long history.Harry brought electricity to pinball, designed the tilt mechanism, was the first to place magnets under the playfield, invented the first pop bumper, was the first to put score reels into a game, and the first to put elevated wire ball paths (the precursor to modern ramps) and more in his games OVER 70 YEARS AGO!Roger famously interviewed Harry back in the 1970s for his book PINBALL!, and he joins us to talk about the legacy of this great man, helping to fill out the details of Harry's life and of his personal warmth. Listen to Roger tell stories of Harry as a mentor to a young version of himself when he was developing his first pinball design Sharpshooter, and insights of Harry's return to the pinball design world in the late 1970s via Sam Stern, aka Gary's dad for Stern Electronics.Harry was a visionary, and was the greatest single creative force that the pinball industry has ever seen, but whilst his many contributions to pinball persist to this day, he remains heinously underappreciated and celebrated for being the true prophet of pinball that he was.We hope that this episode sheds some light on pinball's brightest star.

I welcome Roger Sharpe, President and CEO of Sharpe Communications, and the star of the new movie - PINBALL: The Man Who Saved the Game. Hear about his marketing agency and how the idea to turn his story into a movie started back in 2020. We then discuss how pinball used to be illegal in New York City, discovering pinball in college, working at GQ, being challenged to write a book, and testifying at City Hall it was a game of skill, not a game of chance. Learn about life choices, working in advertising, how others got their start in pinball, plus ideas how you could get into the industry now. Hear about home enthusiasts being a huge boost, going international, and thousands of events, tournaments, and leagues happening every year. We then dive into some of his favorite games and projects, including the ones he designed, along with his licensing work on Elvira, NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Terminator 2, Arctic Thunder, and other games. Learn about the growth of barcades, the explosion of the industry, the difference to video games, and cooperative play. Hear about his concern on the recent pricing of pinballs, not going too hardcore on the game design, and thoughts on licensing. Towards the end he shares a great story about Gary Stern, the legendary Harry Williams, his pinball book, and some current games he's playing or interested in. Learn about websites you can check out, the March 17th, 2023 release date, the irony of making pinballs in Chicago but not being legal years ago, and how this little indie movie is winning awards (go check it out). Bio: Roger Sharpe's demonstration of pinball as a skill-based game overturned New York City's thirty-five-year ban on pinball machines in 1976. Lewis Yost (@lewisyost_) aka Lewdog aka Stan number ?? comes onto the Passive Hang! Lewis is a movement and hand balancing coach, practitioner residing in Perth, Australia, teaching out of Movement Co. I've connected and learnt from Lewis from the past 2 Gains at the Ghetto Workshops. Not only possessing unbelievable personal movement talent, Lewis is also defining a sharp edge to his coaching as well. Lewis started training from age 14, then was snatched from the cradle by Harry Williams into the world of handstands. The rest is… history. He's taken to training in dramatic fashion, now being at 20 being Australia's top handbalancer. We approach this as a follow up to Episode 21 with Harry Williams, with the topic being - advancing the handstand beyond the straight, tuck, straddle shapes. We cover when to let go of chest to wall holds, body line drills, and when to start working on shape changing, what shapes such as the seven and flags, hand walking and head positions. A lot of insight here for intermediate practitioners of hand balancing! If you're not in Perth, Lewis also offers online coaching, just get in touch with him on the ‘gram. Thanks Lewis! #handbalancing #handstand #movement #thepassivehang #movementpractice

A Wilson Green on"We Have Done all that is Possible and Must be Resigned: The First Petersburg Offensive" For more information: WWW.ChicagoCWRT.org The epic contest between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee wound its way from the Rapidan River to Cold Harbor in May and early June 1864. Stymied in his effort to either destroy Lee's army or capture Richmond, Grant decided on a bold move. He would shift George Meade's Army of the Potomac and elements of Benjamin Butler's Army of the James across the James River to target Petersburg, the Confederate capital's logistical and transportation hub. Grant executed these challenging logistics brilliantly, in effect freezing most of Lee's forces north of the James while negotiating an uncontested crossing of the mighty James. By dawn of June 15, the Federals were poised to overrun the vastly outnumbered Confederates around Petersburg commanded by P.G.T. Beauregard. Four days later, after fighting that claimed some 15,000 casualties, Beauregard still held Petersburg and the Army of Northern Virginia dug in to defend the city for the next nine months. The story of Grant's almost flawless movement to and across the James and the Confederates' shockingly successful defense of Petersburg will be the subject of Will Greene's talk. It is based on chapters from his most recent book, A Campaign of Giant:s: The Battle for Petersburg, Volume 1. A. Wilson "Will" Greene was born in Chicago and grew up in Wheaton. He holds degrees in history from Florida State University and Louisiana State University, where he studied under the renowned T. Harry Williams. Greene served sixteen years in the National Park Service, was the first executive director of what is now the American Battlefield Trust, and was the founding director of Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier. Greene is the author of seven books and more than twenty published articles on Civil War history. His latest book, A Campaign of Giants: The Battle for Petersburg (University of North Carolina Press, 2018) is the first of a projected three volumes on the Petersburg Campaign and won numerous awards including best book on American Military History from the Society of Military History. Greene retired in 2017 and lives in Walden, Tennessee.
