In today’s episode, I’m joined by Kara Cutruzzula (rhymes with Methuselah). Kara is a writer in New York who works across many different creative platforms. As a journalist, she's been a writer and editor for The Daily Beast, Newsweek, Billboard, Tasting Table, and MONEY magazine. Her writing about work, productivity, and creativity has been featured in the New York Times, TIME, Medium, and other publications. She also writes plays and lyrics for musical theater, and is currently a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. For the past three years, she's written a weekday newsletter called Brass Ring Daily, which exists to encourage people to work on their own creative projects. And her motivational journal called Do It For Yourself, a collaboration with designer Tessa Forrest, will be published in September by Abrams Noterie and is available for pre-order now! Today Kara and I talk about how to listen (and commit) to your creative urges and how creative constraints actually give us more freedom. We talk about how she found her way to writing when she never considered that path as a kid and why she loves musical theater (as an audience member and a creator). We also talk about: Why she started Brass Ring Daily, her newsletter that Lifehacker called “a life coach in your inbox” — and why she decided to send it out every single weekday The behind the scenes on how she finds and creates the content that helps her get newsletter out every day The linear but lengthy way she climbs the steps of the ladder toward a new creative pursuit What she does with all of her creative ideas to ensure they move beyond the idea stage (or make their way out of her head) . . . and so much more. Kara’s writing and work has brought so much joy and inspiration to my creative life, and I’m really excited to share our conversation knowing it will likely bring the same to yours! — Follow Kara: Website Twitter Instagram Brass Ring Daily Newsletter Do It For Yourself: A Motivational Journal Other Notable Links: Our Stop by Laura Jane Williams Open Book by Jessica Simpson Sunday Night Newsletter Brave Enough to Be Episode 5: Erin Claire Jones Evernote CREDITS Editing & Sound Engineering: Jordan Johansen Music: “Kenton” by Dr Crosby (Licensed via Marmoset)
My guest for episode #30 is Kara Osborne. Kara is sharing her story about the unexpected journey the Lord took her on of learning how to live well for his glory. Kara is a wife and mother of two who spends her days encouraging others to step forward into the things the Lord has called them to. She’s a former school counselor who founded a faith based Health and Wellness business and ministry called Wellness Witness in 2014. Though local classes, social media, an online membership community called the At-Home Tribe, and through her new podcast IN IT WITH YOU, Kara hopes to love, encourage, equip and led people into brave obedience. Today Kara and I talk about her leaving her job to start her fitness ministry and how it was just about taking the next step, and obeying and trusting in God’s provision. She tells us that is wasn’t easy or always pretty, but because the Lord was faithful to her again and again, she can encourage other women to trust him too. Kara talks about her continuous cycle of jumping in and starting new plan after new plan and thinking that was the one that would bring her lasting hope and satisfaction, but how it never did. She shares her light bulb moment when she gained the insight that God had given her her body as a gift and it was her job to steward it well. Kara talks about drilling down and knowing your WHY and letting go of temporary indicators that don’t bring lasting satisfaction. She says that for most of us, when we get to the heart of why we want to be healthy, it’s because we want to love others well. I love, love, love Kara’s approach, not only to physical wellness, but to spiritual wellness, and her trust in the Lord is contagious! It's recommended that 4th graders get 10-12 hours of sleep per night. But kids activities are often built around adult schedules! A night time routine is imperative for happy, healthy kids...but its hard! Younger kids have this built in FOMO that leads them to believe that everything good is happening right after you put them to bed for the night! Older kids are just so busy these days that it's hard for them to get to bed before midnight! Today Kara and Vanessa discuss their evening routines and share the tips and tricks they use to help their big and little kids get the sleep the so desperately need! They agree...you have to set a time to officially wind down for the evening. When you can, have a family dinner at a consistent hour and use that time to reflect on the highs and lows of the day. Allow children to wind down by reading or listening to an audiobook. But sometimes you might just have to trick your kids into an earlier bedtime, or give everyone an occasional "sleep gummy". HEY...whatever works!

Welcome to The Real Estate Deep Dive Podcast with Kara Macdonald. Today Kara welcomes our special guest Karen Cooper founder of the Platinum Group Real Estate Team in Northern Virginia and she’s here with us today to teach us some new time management tricks. With time management, what works for you is always going to be an evolving thing depending on the season of your life. Kara and Karen discuss how to build a schedule that fits your life right now. If you feel like you have too many interruptions keeping you from being productive in your work, that can be very draining. Let’s talk about how to set limitations to protect your time. Often what keeps us from having these boundary conversations is the fear that our value comes from our being constantly available. Here’s the thing: It doesn’t. One of the great tricks that Karen discusses applies really well to work-life balance. Here it is: call every time commitment that you have an appointment, whether it’s a business meeting or a family event. Not only is this practice more professional, but it’ll help you guard your family time. Other great tips you’ll hear about in our conversation today include inbox management, mental resilience in the face of overwhelming pings, dings and alerts and handy hacks for laundry, cooking and cleaning. Lastly, remember that saying “yes” to one thing means saying “no" to something else. Thanks so much for tuning in! Links from today’s show: Karen is on Facebook and Instagram. You’re listening to the Real Deep Dive Podcast With Kara Macdonald Episode 009 brought to you by Pruitt Title! We’re excited to announce an upcoming event for Real Estate Agents in the DC area called REBAR Camp Nova. Join us on Thursday, September 20, 2018 from 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM EDT for a very informal and very free technology conference. Mark your calendar! Location of REBAR Camp NOVA: Workhouse Arts Center 9518 Workhouse Road Lorton, VA 22079 Today we are diving deep into using Facebook with Andrea Vahl, Social Media Consultant and Co-Author of Facebook Marketing All-in-One for Dummies. Andrea has had her blog AndreaVahl.com for 9 years where she is constantly sharing the most up-to-date social media tips! Today Kara and Andrea talk about how real estate agents can use a business page on Facebook. Andrea explains that it’s easy to set up. This is the space where the business part of your life lives on Facebook, but you also want it to be fun! You can post some entertainment and showcase some of your own personality. Let’s talk about imagery. Your profile photo should be a photo of you, not the one you use on your personal profile. Your cover photo could either showcase a property or you could even insert a video. Remember that changing your cover photo every once in a while is a great way to get a little attention. The About Page is where you give info about how you work and showcase success you’ve had in your business. Feel free to elaborate. Don’t make this section too short. Beyond imagery and a strong About Page the next most important thing for Facebook success is to post good content regularly. And, Facebook rewards posts that initiate conversation, so get creative with your posts! Ask questions about homeownership, moving and interior design! Then, Kara and Andrea go on to discuss some more advanced strategies and ad promotion. First, go in to Facebook Ad Manager and select the objective that you want. The choices are: website clicks, lead generation or conversation. Then you’ll be able to optimize your ad for those results. Have the Facebook pixel installed on your website if you can. Next Kara asks Andrea about some other ways to increase lead generation. When someone gives you their email address in exchange for a great piece of content, that is considered a lead. When someone visits your website there should be something front and center that is irresistible! Thanks for listening to our show today brought to you by Pruitt Title, licensed in Maryland, DC and Virginia to handle Real Estate Settlements and REBAR Camp Nova. Kara Burns has the kind of inner energy that she just can’t contain as she touches on so many raw, personal topics today. If you’ve been a Run This World listener for a long time now, you will remember episode 24 “From Prison to 26.2” where we tackled her story from the bottom up as a former meth addict and felon. I remember trying to figure out how to ask some difficult questions, and I realized there’s no tactful way, so I literally said, “So how does one start doing meth?” Kara was a few years out of federal prison at that point and her calling was just becoming evident. Today we have an entirely different kind of conversation. Today’s podcast is all about being unwilling to fail. It’s all about taking a past full of shame and guilt and turning it into the most beautiful, authentic message of hope and love. Today Kara is all about going FORWARD and she’s taking so many others with her. Her story gives people hope that they CAN change their lives. They CAN start over. They CAN make good decisions. They CAN be happy. Kara inspires me and I know she will inspire you too. Please note, there are a few swear words and some sexual innuendos in this episode – in case little ears are listening. Today we talk about: Kara's relationship with her daughter today We weren't going to dig into her past life of drugs and prison, but we did anyway :) Head trash: the stories we tell ourselves Addiction: how important it is to know your triggers Making new associations: Dress for Success and Running Start Mentors: Creating your network Giving back: ReStart is helping others just like her Be unwilling to fail. This is Kara's 3rd appearance on the podcast and it is nothing short of spectacular. Kara is truly as dynamic as she sounds. This conversation is 100% authentic, just like she says. There is huge laughter, moments of awkward silence, and tearful, raw emotion as Kara grasps for what she feels compelled to convey. You feel like you’re in the room with her even through the airwaves and I believe that is the sign of someone who transcends. Kara is more than her past. She is more than whatever she will do in the future. She is like an authentic magical being who brings light and happiness to people. Okay the love fest is obviously full-on, from me and probably you too. If you want to connect with Kara, hit her up on Instagram at never.quit.trying – reach out to her for anything. I know! Hit her up to mentor you! Okay I’ll leave you all on a big huge high. Let’s get ourselves out there, let’s make Kara Burns proud and let’s go run this world! Have a great workout and I’ll see you next week!
Today Kara welcomes Tara Swiger back to the show! Tara first appeared in episode 61, and now she's back to talk about the ways her business has changed since she was last here - including an increased focus on the practice of mindfulness. Tara has worked with makers and artists for seven years, helping them learn to explore their own enthusiasm and build businesses they love. Now she has a new branch of her business, helping people who want to build a business that doesn't include handmade products. In today's special episode, which premieres here and on Tara's own podcast, Tara and Kara discuss their thoughts on mindfulness and share tips for how you can build a mindfulness practice of your own. “Mindfulness is just paying attention - to where you are and how you feel. From there, you can make better decisions." -Tara Swiger [Tweet "Building a #mindfulness practice with @TaraSwiger and @KaraKnits on the #PowerPurlsPodcast"] Episode highlights: Tara has been helping makers and artists build businesses for 7 years. Since then she has built another arm of her business, using essential oils. Tara loves learning new business models and finding solutions for people who want to build a business. Kara says that mindfulness is part of her business/life plan. Tara defines mindfulness as being aware in the present moment and paying attention. Kara notes that you can’t just say “I’m going to be more mindful!” It takes work to build a habit. When you’re doing what you love for a living, it’s important to stop and pay attention to how great that is! Mindfulness Tips & Tricks from Kara and Tara: The apps they love: Headspace and Insight Timer Tara puts her phone on airplane mode when she needs to focus on her work. She also turns off all notifications on her phone. Kara will record a meditation, slogan, or affirmation on her phone so she can refer to them later. Kara likes using her journal to record the positive benefits she sees from her meditation practice. Kara and Tara both like to go to a special spot in their homes where they can build a habit of mindfulness in that space. Tara uses scent (essential oils) to help with her mindfulness practice. You can use any essential oil you like – if you get in the habit of using it before you meditate then soon that scent will trigger a desire to meditate in you. She also uses essential oils to help encourage herself to change her feelings. Kara recommends attending in-person mindfulness events and group meditations whenever possible. There's a special energy you can get in this setting that you can't get from an app! Today Kara talks to the Editorial Director and Vice President of Vogue Knitting, Trisha Malcolm. Trisha was the very first guest on this podcast, so we're so glad to have her back again today! Trisha is a magazine publisher with a focus on fashion-forward designs that adapt to the needs of today's knitters. Listen in as we talk about the special 35th anniversary issue of Vogue Knitting Magazine! “It's a creative job because every issue is different, and every time something new happens, it's exciting!” -Trisha Malcolm [Tweet "Behind the scenes of @VogueKnitting - listen in on the #PowerPurlsPodcast!"] Episode highlights: Trisha started her career as a high school teacher. Then she got a job at a crafting magazine because she was a teacher who also knew how to do several crafts. This year marks Trisha's 20th anniversary with Vogue Knitting! Vogue Knitting started in 1932, so even though this is our 35th anniversary, the brand is 85 years old. In 1972 they stopped publishing the magazine when Conde Nast sold the pattern side to Butterick Patterns and stopped the magazine. In the 1980s there was a big knitting boom again, and Trisha's boss asked Conde Nast to start publishing the magazine again. The magazine focuses on fashion, but Trisha feels this has become less important because fashion itself has become so much more casual in recent years. Trisha looks at online videos and photos for fashion shows each season, and then she finds all the sweaters and bundles those images together to create a trend report. Trisha is starting to see more shawls and wraps on the runway, and she thinks the designers are taking a nod from the knitters of the world (we love our shawls, don't we?). Trisha redesigned the magazine a year ago to include more "behind the scenes" with designers. Trisha has big plans to take the magazine into a broader digital environment in order to make the content accessible via phone. She doesn't envision that the print issue will disappear, though. For the anniversary issue, they invited regular advertisers to choose a favorite pattern from a past issue, and those patterns are now available for free for a limited time on the website. Trisha works with a small team of 8 to 10 members, and together they publish 6 issues of Vogue Knitting and also create Knit Simple Magazine together. It's important for Trisha to work with people who are, first and foremost, nice. Leave a comment telling us your favorite part of the newest issue of Vogue Knitting Magazine, and you could WIN a free subscription!
