(free crochet pattern on Ravelry). Yarn has a lot of twist, got all tangly and we stayed after to untangle it together while other cast members performed on stage. On the first night of rehearsal one of my cast-mates asked about my knitting and through that conversation we figured out we've worked together before. She was the choreographer when I was in a production of Crazy for You at a local community college when I was in high school. I wore my Aurealis sweater (Ravelry Project Page) one night to music rehearsal and my friend Deana complimented it and I told her I knit it! Laura's sock drawer! How gorgeous is this?   In My Travels Vegas trip for BOSS Reseller Remix & FearLESS Living Fund 2025 Awards We gave away 2 $5,000 scholarships Mom's friend Crystal got a fearless tattoo on her arm. Knitting at craps table with Jeff. The manager told me he doesn't see many firsts anymore but I was the first person he'd ever seen knitting in a casino before. He came back a few minutes later asking what I was making- definitely intrigued. It took until the last day- walking through New York New York to find Wizard of Oz slots Mom loved best. It was obviously a bittersweet trip. Ryan Wilson said it best when he said before talking about 2 winners- in some ways this is the most important year because its the first one without Mom and we're still doing it. If you want to see the awards presentation, here's a link to video on my YouTube channel.   Boston Public Market Fiber Fest- Sunday March 23 from 10a-5p. Have you heard of it?   Ask Me Anything Instagram- Knitbakecook- Do you ever have crafting slumps? If so, how do you overcome them? Yes! Sometimes it helps just to lean into that, don't pressure yourself and then lean back in when you get the urge. More often, what works best is to start something new (or pick back up something that is exciting you). Ideally something small like a hat or a toy so you get that dopamine hit of finishing something fun to get those creative juices flowing. Search your Ravelry favorite or queue, browse Instagram or Pinterest and let yourself day dream a little. Creative time should be fun so find the fun and you'll be excited to get back into things. Instagram- ndoyal- When are you coming to the PNW?! I am planning to go to Flock in August. Instagram- nukerklein- Have you been or are you planning to go to VT Sheep & Wool in the fall? In the spirit of the season, I begin this show with a list of my go-to self-care essentials. Things you may not even be aware of that I believe bring high value to our self-care journeys. From a simple cheap notebook to a high end imported French tea…it's all here. Take your pick from the links below. The complete list is on the blog below. I had such fun talking to Brandi Cheyenne Harper, who is a VERY cool woman and a knitting genius. Her designs are so beautiful and hip and just plain fresh! And she really makes a compelling case for why knitting truly is absolute self-care. I learned: How she got started What knitting has to do with self-care How false modesty does NOT help us…but knitting does How to enjoy knitting imperfectly How she fits pleasure knitting into her knit-biz life How long it takes to do her patterns (it's surprisingly fast!) I hope you enjoy as much as I did. A very fun project to carry into the New Year! Happy New Year everyone. It seems she was given a pair of silk stockings and declared them wonderful. Of course they became all the rage at court and the style trickled down to all who could afford them. Prior to this era, those who could afford it, wrapped their legs with a length of cloth, rather like wide ace bandages. Poor folks went bare-legged. The fashion for stockings created a peasant cottage industry. to facilitate walking while knitting, belts with a small rigid horizontal leather strip were worn. Star Wars sweater for Thing 1 -  Using Nordic Yoke Pullover, a free pattern from Patons, as the base and altering the charts to have Star Wars characters/spaceships/icons.  I’m about 25% through the yoke collar, currently working on R2D2’s head.  Body of sweater will be red as that’s his favorite color Vanilla sock in Berroco Comfort Sock in Bali colorway.  Still chugging along at this 2+ year old WIP, it’s my car knitting.   Pattern Acquisition Derwentwater by Tess Young, won it during the Indie Gift-a-long KAL, forgot to mention it last week! Spinning New segment - I finally figured out this spinning thing!  Working on my 2nd single in undyed cotton Out and About Off to Vogue Knitting in NYC tonight!  If you’re there stop me and say hello.  Just to warn you I’ve had a lot of sleepless nights recently with the kids and my husband being sick, so if I seem a little dazed or perhaps a little overly caffeinated, that’s why.  But please come say hello anyways.  I am really looking forward to the 2 classes I am attending on Friday.  On the Run I’m on my 2nd week of my half marathon training plan, and unfortunately I am dealing with some unexpected knee pain.

Today Kara talks to the Editorial Director and Vice President of Vogue Knitting, Trisha Malcolm. Trisha was the very first guest on this podcast, so we're so glad to have her back again today! Trisha is a magazine publisher with a focus on fashion-forward designs that adapt to the needs of today's knitters. Listen in as we talk about the special 35th anniversary issue of Vogue Knitting Magazine!   “It's a creative job because every issue is different, and every time something new happens, it's exciting!”   -Trisha Malcolm [Tweet "Behind the scenes of @VogueKnitting - listen in on the #PowerPurlsPodcast!"] Episode highlights: Trisha started her career as a high school teacher. Then she got a job at a crafting magazine because she was a teacher who also knew how to do several crafts. This year marks Trisha's 20th anniversary with Vogue Knitting! Vogue Knitting started in 1932, so even though this is our 35th anniversary, the brand is 85 years old. In 1972 they stopped publishing the magazine when Conde Nast sold the pattern side to Butterick Patterns and stopped the magazine. In the 1980s there was a big knitting boom again, and Trisha's boss asked Conde Nast to start publishing the magazine again. The magazine focuses on fashion, but Trisha feels this has become less important because fashion itself has become so much more casual in recent years. Trisha looks at online videos and photos for fashion shows each season, and then she finds all the sweaters and bundles those images together to create a trend report. Trisha is starting to see more shawls and wraps on the runway, and she thinks the designers are taking a nod from the knitters of the world (we love our shawls, don't we?). Trisha redesigned the magazine a year ago to include more "behind the scenes" with designers. Trisha has big plans to take the magazine into a broader digital environment in order to make the content accessible via phone. She doesn't envision that the print issue will disappear, though. For the anniversary issue, they invited regular advertisers to choose a favorite pattern from a past issue, and those patterns are now available for free for a limited time on the website. Trisha works with a small team of 8 to 10 members, and together they publish 6 issues of Vogue Knitting and also create Knit Simple Magazine together. She began her career designing knitting patterns in 2002. Her designs have been published in several magazines, including Creative Knitting, Vogue Knitting, Family Circle Easy Knitting, and Interweave Knits. Kara has a background as a technical illustrator, working with craft book publishers such as Random House, Lark Books, Sterling Publishing, and F+W. Kara first joined Annie’s Publishing in 2008 as knitting book editor, and then in 2010 signed on as Executive Editor of Creative Knitting Magazine and Annie’s Knitting Publications. Through the Power Purls podcast, Kara’s mission is to dig deep and ask those burning questions about what turned her guests on to the “two sticks and fiber” in the first place, and what keeps their needles moving! Making the Leap: Do you know your ONE thing? Kara shares how she planned it out and did the math before leaving her full-time job to pursue her dreams. She reveals the empowerment she felt by putting her plan on paper and beginning to work on HER dreams full-time. We all know that dreams may not stay the same over time as they are refined by experiences and situations. Kara decided to focus on her podcast and use it to create a sustainable life and community. The dream has layers to it as she realizes her goals within the knitting industry. Don’t be afraid to let your dream evolve! TWEET: “Your #wellness is all part of the process.” @karaknits The One Thing: In this age of busy-ness, we are probably all involved in several “dreams” and projects at once. Kara tells about the things she has going on within her dream. Even though we focus on ONE thing, we have commitments to many things. Is multi-tasking a bad thing? Absolutely not! Today’s podcast episode is motivated by Aimee’s desire to have all of her listeners hear her guest’s story. Kara Gott Warner, Creative Knitting Magazine Executive Editor, and host of Power Purls Podcast, began her career designing knitting patterns in 2002. Her designs have been published in several magazines, including: Creative Knitting, Vogue Knitting, Family Circle Easy Knitting and Interweave Knits. Kara has a background as a technical illustrator, working with craft book publishers such as Random House, Lark Books, Sterling Publishing and F+W. Kara first joined Annie's Publishing in 2008 as knitting book editor, and then in 2010 signed on as Executive Editor of Creative Knitting Magazine and Annie’s knitting publications. Through Power Purls Podcast, Kara's mission is to dig deep and ask those burning questions about what turned her guests on to the “two sticks and fiber,” in the first place, and what keeps their needles moving! TWEET: If you just focus on one small aspect of your industry, it’s going to be hard ~ Kara Gott Warner The negative power of pigeonholing yourself. When Kara Gott Warner began working full time as editor of Creative Knitting Magazine, she became aware of the ease with which knitters could pigeonhole themselves. To her, it seemed that too many would lump themselves into a certain skill category and feel that they were unable to move from there. Kara felt that the categories needed to be broader, so she created new categories to enable people to more easily move from one to the next without as much fear of stepping out of their comfort zone. Isn’t that a great parable for life? We all too easily think of ourselves in one set way when the reality is that each of us has the ability to grow, mature, and increase in skill so that we are not today what we were tomorrow. Hear more of Kara’s insights on this episode. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. It’s common nowadays for people to talk about the impossibility of overnight success and today’s guest, Kara Gott Warner agrees. Her journey from an unhappy financier to editor of Creative Knitting Magazine was almost a decade long. She attributes the success she’s experienced to constant motion in the same direction. She wasn’t standing still. She was moving toward what she wanted, preparing herself, learning, growing in the skills it would take to become what she wanted to be. In this episode Kara unpacks her thoughts about how that happened in her own journey and gives some advice about the importance of preparing yourself for the future while you’re waiting for the opportunities to come. TWEET: I was on a trajectory I didn’t like and my husband encouraged me to quit ~ Kara Gott Warner When you truly care about something you just can’t quit. Kara Gott Warner had a reintroduction to knitting in her early 20s. It became a place of solace and personal therapy for her at the end of a hard or busy day. She fell in love with knitting and began designing patterns of her own. But it wasn’t long before she realized that she wanted to somehow make her love for knitting into a career. That might sound crazy because knitting doesn’t sound like a very lucrative business niche, and it’s not. But Kara didn’t care about that. Her desire was to always have knitting be near the center of her life and that included  her work. So she set out in that direction and never looked back. Even though hard times came, she didn’t allow herself to become discouraged because she cared about knitting so much.  Aimee does a great job of drawing out Kara’s story and the lessons she’s learned on her way to the top, so be sure you listen in to this inspiring episode. Looking back, what things would you change? Most of us have missteps or regrets of one kind or another - both small and more serious. But when Aimee asked  her guest, Kara Gott Warner what she would change if she could start her journey over, Kara said, “Not a thing.” She believes that everything she’s been through has been for her own growth and development and that if any of those things were magically changed, she wouldn’t be the person she is today. Now THAT is a refreshing perspective, and Kara’s full of them. You can hear the entire conversation Aimee had with Kara, Editor of Creative Knitting Magazine, on this episode of Chasing Dreams. This episode is sponsored by Dizzy Blonde Studios. "For beautifully hand-dyed yarns and inspired knit design." Catching Up: (0:45) Laura lost her dog Sabre. She is trying to keep busy, but it's been really hard. Jen's Stitch and Beach Group had a yarn swap. She got some different novelty yarn to play with (it will probably become charity scarves for Interval House). She also got some pretty purple laceweight yarn. Laura mentions the Cogknitive Fiber Retreat yarn swap. We talk about how useful yarn swaps are, both to give yarns you may not use a good home with people who really love them and to get yarns that you aren't used to working with (different colors and fibers) to break out of your comfort zone. We both both bought things out of our comfort zones on the Yarn Crawl. In the Knitting Bag (5:45) Jen cast on the Mysterious Shawl Knit-a-long by Romi Hill out of A Verb for Keeping Warm Floating in the colors Au Lait and Transnational Fury. Laura is still working on her Clapotis (or, as she calls it, her Sassy-tis, because the yarn was dyed to match her cat, Sassy). Laura is also working on a beaded choker design and trying to chart it and make the directions make sense and make it the correct size. Progress was a little sidelined by Sabre's passing, but now the pattern is off to the test knitter. Jen also worked on an easy scarf out of Lion Brand Homespun while watching the new Star Trek movie. She named the scarf "Chekov put on a Red Shirt" because she thinks Chekov is adorable. Jen mentions her knitting guilds: the El Segundo Slipt Stitchers and the Chocolate Martini Lace Knitters Guild. We mention designers Marnie Maclean and Janine le Cras, who does the patterns for the Unique Sheep. We digress about Chekov and Sulu in the original series and the animated series of Star Trek. Frog Pond: (15:56) Jen has had to rip back some of the bind off in the center section of her Madroña shawl because it was too tight. (Jen has issues with tight bind-offs and crocheting too tightly). Laura recommends wine to relax. Jen is hoping that beer and a marathon of Vikings with her friend will do the trick. Laura tried to substitute yarn on the Nine Dwindling Cables Beret by Yarn Owl. But math was not her friend. She's going to rip and re-knit a modified version. On Deck: (19:35) Jen is going to do a lace shawl for Camp Loopy out of Fleece Artist Saldanha Two in Vermillion color. She hasn't yet picked a project. She thinks the red color is wrong for Rock Island, so she will probably knit a pattern by BooKnits or the Romi Hill pattern Fire Bird (which she mistakenly calls "Firebrand"). Laura is going to handpaint some yarn to match Sabre and work on a scarf and fingerless mitts for her husband. This is her dissertation for Nerd Wars. Book Review: (23:58) We review 50 Sunlowers to Knit, Crochet, and Felt by Kristin Nicholas. (Full disclosure: Laura won this book in a contest from Vogue Knitting). Movie Reviews: (31:53) We give spoiler-free reviews of both Iron Man 3 and Star Trek: Into Darkness. TV Talk: (39:05) Jen talks a bit about the season finale of Doctor Who and the companions (no spoilers!). We digress into less geeky shows. Laura talks about the season ends of Grey's Anatomy, Castle, and Scandal. (All spoiler-free). We also discuss How I Met Your Mother. And then we get into the Big Bang Theory and being a geek. Also, we wish Tim Curry (star of Clue, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Oscar) a speedy recovery! We also mention the films Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Singin' in the Rain. Events: (49:22) The Knotty Girls are hosting a World Wide Knit in Public Day Event at the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa on June 15, 2013 from 1 to 3pm. No entrance to the park is required, and parking at Downtown Disney is free for up to three hours (five with validation from a restaurant or the movie theatre in Downtown Disney). There will be SWAG! Bring: 1. Your Knitting (or whatever else you want to work on) 2. Money for snacks and/or drinks 3. Any FOs you want to show off 4. A scarf for Interval House. Details: The scarf can be any yarn, any weight and may be knit, crochet, or woven. (Great for stash-busting if you want to do stripes!). The only guideline is that it be at least 4” wide and 60” long. A more open work scarf is preferred (i.e. not a heavy dense fabric) as this is for women in Southern California, but really, that can just mean using really big needles. I tend to do mine either in garter stitch or a simple rib or broken rib on big needles. Please bring the scarf in a ziplock or some other bag (the bag does not have to seal) with a paper saying your name, the yarn the scarf is made of (if you know it, if you don’t that’s okay), and any care instructions. Also please provide contact info (email and/or phone number). The contact info is just for us to get in touch with you if you win the drawing; we will not sell, trade, lend, borrow, fold, spindle, or mutilate your contact info and it will not be provided to my guild or to Interval House, I promise you. Multiple scarves = multiple entries in the drawing! KnitDizzney will be Sunday, September 8th, 2013. More details to come, but we'd love to spend a day at the Disneyland park with you!

Episode:41 Production scheduling I’m semi freshly back from camp KIP. I have so much to talk about regarding camp that I think it’s going to be an entire podcast. SO instead of launching into that now I’ll use this week to get caught up on what I’ve been doing and will recap Camp in depth next episode. I will say this. Camp Kip was absolutely awesome. I had an amazing time and I will be stalking Jackie so that I can do it again. If she woub Production What’s in My Teapotbb Materials Sourcing Shipping After 5 Production Drop stitch Scarf by Lisa Buccellato found in the spring and summer 2012 issue of vogue knitting. Knitting this our of Cascade Ultra Pima. I think Last week I called this Pima Silk. I shocked my self when I wound the second skein and saw that it’s 100% Pima cotton. No silk… I finally have this chart for the most part memorized. Which maded me feel brave enough to pack this as my knitting for CAMP Kip. That lasted about ½ a chart repeat. No sooner did I settler into a chair to knit the conversation started and it was really good conversation so I lost my spot in the pattern. Then we decided it was too cold where we were and moved off in search of sun… again I lost my place in the pattern. At that point I put the scarf down. This wasn’t going to work. Now that I’m home I’ve picked it back up again I have about 3 feet of the six foot length done. I just wound the second ball of yarn. I’m getting antsy I _Really_ want to drop those stitches! What’s In My TeaPot Metropolitan Teas Ice Wine Tea I got this at Warm Glow Candles off of I 70 in Indiana. Not only did they have tons of yummy candkles, they had the best beef brisket I've had in a while and I found tea! A sweet offering from the originator of Icewine Tea In recent years Canadian made Icewine has begun winning awards at prestigious wine shows the world over. To make the sweet flavorful treat, Vidal or Riesling grapes are plucked from frozen vines in temperatures below 17°F or -8°C. Brrr! Our fabulous Icewine tea blends real I cewine with premium high grown Ceylon black tea and100% natural flavors. Just like the real thing, our tea has started winning accolades from customers the world over! A touch alcholic but more floral than anything. Not as boozy as the rum tea. Sweet on its own and very yummy. I drank a pot on my own before bed. (And then paced the floor all night the black tea base packs a caffeine punch.) Shipping The Cotton Candy Merino is off the bobbins and came in at 342 yds of a fingering-ish yarn. I was immediately in love with this yarn so I finished and balled it to head to camp with me. The intent was to cast on the Wingspan by Maylin Tri’Coterie Designs after I realized how distracted I was going to be at camp this was just the ticket. Short rows with stitch marker telling me where to turn and all in garter! Just what the doctor ordered! I loved this pattern and I love the way my handspun looks knit up. But as with my last project knit with handspun I didn’t have quite the yardage I would have preferred to have had. My wingspan has 7 triangles and I had to unravel my swatched to finish and bind off. It does fit me but I think I would have preferred to add on a few more sections. I toyed with gifting it to my one of my more petite friends but the handspun is just too yummy.  I will make another one. I keep looking at the ravelry page for this pattern and those projects done in swing knitting are calling my name… and I have some new stash to burn up. Material Sourcing I think I got more spinning done at camp than knitting. I brought the last chunk of the Nantucket to finish. I would call it about an ounce (It’s the fiber B found under the couch.) I this wasbv sweater I ordered 4 oz of Cormo from Herman Hills Farm in southern Ohio. The Cormo is lovely stuff but the pin drfting doesn’t seem to agree with me. This may just be something I need to get used to. I meant to spin this at camp but I ignored it. What got the most action was the PotLuck fiber from paradise fibers in the Party Colorway. I bought 16 oz of this to get a discount not knowing how much 16 oz really was in terms of spinning. I did 4 ozs a long ways back. I took the remaining 4 oz of the 1st ball as loaner fiber for anyone that wanted to use my wheel. The bright colors caught some eyes and I spent most of my time spinning this. I finished that ball the day after I got home. Now I’m looking the second ball thinking that I may just start on that. bbbb The last time I spun this fiber I stripped out all the color repeats and Navajo plied. That gave me a worsted-ish weigh yar with long color repeats. This time I left the roving intact, Pre darafted, and spun back and forth across the top of all the colors. With the difference I think I’d going to do some ply tests before I break into that second ball. After 5 The house is standing. I didn’t get any panicked phone calls. I even came home to a clean house! Maybe I should leave more often. Joe took B to the Kindergarten Fair. This little event sounded pretty cool the was supposed to be a petting zoo, a clown, games an prizes. Joe unlike me is on time for everything. In fact he’s so on time that it sometimes border on rude. (45 minutes early for a job interview..) Joe and B got there before the clown and while the animals were still getting set up. Which brought B face to face with a tarantula. Who the heck brings a tarantula to a Kindergarten petting zoo? Needless to say he freaked and wouldn’t stay for the balloon guy and wouldn’t look at any more animals. As if the Kindergarten Fair weren’t emotionally scarring enough B also had a dentist apt. which is now required for entrance to kindergarten. From what I hear everything was going fine until joe got his big ol’ size 15 shoe on the pedal that starts the drill. The drill went off and scared everyone in the room and once again B was done. Though to tell the tale now B believes he is an expert at the dentist and proudly tells me about the watermelon paste the dentist put on his teeth. Last episode I recoded a bit on the new issue of vogue knitting the episode would have been an hour long so I kept it for this week… Vogue Knitting – spring and summer. Think Pink! I bought this issue for the drop stitch scarf. But I feel it’s worth picking up. Articles of note that caught my eye… A write up on Ysolda Teague she talks about how she became a knitwear designer. I love that her parents thought she was “depressed”. There’s also a series on finishing that started this month with “Finish before you start” which contains some good reminders that a poorly written pattern may be the first challenge in finishing. I like articles like this because it brings the tips I know but have managed to forget back to the fore. Like reading through a pattern to take a look at the sizing or to make sure everything makes sense. I hate when I look at the pattern and look at my stitches and I have no idea how to get from point A to point B in the pattern. This month also has cute spring knits. I could see my self swaning around pool side in the Summer Poncho by Sheri more. The pattern as written is tunic length in the front and knee length in the back. If I decided to cast this one I would look into making it ankle length and the same length in the front and back. Which would be a TON of knitting. But I’m pretty short at 5 ft 1 so it may be doable. Lace, panels, cabling, and drop stitch detail. I really like The Shaped Hemline sleeveless pullover by Vicki Square. This is in the running for Camp KIP Knitting. I’ve been looking at the summer tops in here and even though I prefer sleeves the A line body and collar are styles that I find appearing in my wardrobe over and over. The second runner up in my “summer top to Knit” race is Joan McGowan’s V neck Top with the leaf – lace band. Looking at the finished sweater it doesn’t look bad but the side close zipper spooks me… hmmmmmm. Think Pink… There isn’t one project in the Think Pink Section I wouldn’t consider. But I need another shawl like I need a whole in the head. Maybe the lace beret?

As You Like It is a play written by William Shakespeare. There are many related production notes, commentaries, translations, summaries, and glossaries on the Web. I went on a trip with Southwest Airlines. They pulled me off my flight just before takeoff for fear of the H1N1 flu (or "swine flu") and said I could only get back on a flight home if I was tested at a hospital first. This embarrassed me, cost me a lot of money, and didn't actually accomplish anything, as the test was only 70% accurate. Charlie Rose aired an episode about H1N1 and what we know about it so far. Unfortunately, the video itself isn't available yet. Here is a Q&A session with one of the participants in the Charlie Rose panel. Notice that, in spite of the "national emergency" status given by President Obama (whom I voted for, remember), the actual data we have on H1N1 show it to be slightly different but not necessarily more dangerous than other types of flus. I sang the intro to the fashion segment to the tune of "Moon River," written by Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini for Breakfast at Tiffany's. I like this movie. Except the Mickey Rooney bits. I've been following the fashion shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris for the past few years, via podcasts by MODTV and Style.com. Some of the designer collections I mentioned in this podcast are: * Anna Sui, New York, Fall 2009 * Erdem, London, Fall 2009 * Christopher Kane, London, Fall 2009 * Peter Pilotto, London, Fall 2009 * Gucci, Milan, Fall 2009 * Giorgio Armani, Milan, Fall 2009 I also talked about Interweave Knits and Vogue Knitting magazines. All the music was provided by Mevio.com. "Winter Wind" was composed and performed by Jon Schmidt. Seamonkey adapted "Swine Flu" from "Footloose" (popularized by Kenny Loggins).

On this episode of CraftSanity I chat with Kayte Terry about her creative life and inspiring first book, " Complete embellishing Techniques and Projects." Kayte, 31, of Brooklyn, is a talented stylist, writer and crafter who worked for several magazines including: Adorn, Cutting Edge, Vogue Knitting, Parents, Craft Stylish and Quick & Simple. She has also contributed to HGTV Ideas magazine, Getcrafty.com and Etsy's Storque. If you're a fan of Anthropologie, you'll enjoy hearing Kayte talk about working as a stylist for the company. It's my hope that this podcast and Kayte's book will inspire you to look at the clothes in your closet with renewed interest and help you summon the courage to refashion your wardrobe. Who needs brand new store-bought clothes, when Kayte can inspire us to shop our own closets and local thrift shops to craft something fabulous on the cheap? I love it when my crafting saves me money.
