Dr. Gladys McGarey, lovingly hailed as the "Mother of Holistic Medicine," devoted over six transformative decades to reshaping our understanding of health and healing. Born on November 30, 1920, in India, Dr. McGarey grew up steeped in the traditions of care and compassion, inspired by her medical missionary parents. At just 16, she boldly moved to the United States to pursue her dream of medicine, overcoming formidable barriers as a pioneering female medical resident in the 1940s. In 1964, Dr. McGarey co-founded the Olive Tree Medical Group, later known as the ARE Clinic, the first of its kind to integrate the teachings of Edgar Cayce into holistic healthcare. Her groundbreaking vision culminated in the founding of the American Holistic Medical Association in 1978, forever changing the landscape of integrative medicine in the United States. Through her powerful works, including Born to Live and The Well-Lived Life, Dr. McGarey distilled her philosophy into her "Five Ls": Life, Love, Laughter, Labor, and Listening. She believed deeply that "all healing comes from inside ourselves" and that "love is the essence of healing," a testament to her profound understanding of the human spirit. Her remarkable life included meeting Gandhi as a child, pioneering safer birthing practices in Afghanistan, and, even at 103, continuing to inspire through her writing and speaking. Sadly, just weeks after recording a podcast conversation together, this extraordinary light transitioned from our world. Today, I share that recording—a rare and poignant glimpse into her wisdom and boundless spirit. Dr. McGarey's legacy of love and healing will continue to illuminate hearts and minds for generations to come. Rest in peace, Dr. Gladys. ✨

A Note from James:Oh my gosh, every time, this is the second time I've talked to Gladys McGarey. Last year she was 102 years old, this year she's 103 years old. She wrote a book, The Well Lived Life: A 102-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age, and it's coming out in paperback. And every time I read this book, I've read it twice now, and I talk to her, I almost feel like crying, and I don't really know why. It's almost as if she was born with wisdom, but then kept even growing for the next 102 years. Like she drove a Ford Model A car, and now she's talking to me through Zoom on the internet and going on podcasts, writing books. She was a doctor her whole life. She's been all over the world. She's had so many amazing experiences and also has suffered, of course, much loss. I don't think you're going to live to be that age and not have an incredible amount of loss that you have to learn to move past and still be positive and still live every day to its fullest. She had, she was riding a tricycle and it threw her off into the street and she broke three ribs. And she's now totally healed and on the podcast. I really look up to this woman a lot. Here's Gladys McGarey. We have a great conversation about all sorts of things and she's the author of The Well Lived Life. She discusses the importance of facing challenges, the transformative power of love and life, and how her encounters with notable figures like Milton Erickson shaped her understanding of human potential. We're told that we should be happy and that we deserve to have it all. And we often feel that we've failed ourselves if we aren't happy 24/7—and if we haven't managed to get everything we're supposed to need and want. I've found that the overly high expectations we set for ourselves (plus those set by family, friends, and society) tend to work against that most lasting and delightful goal of all—the ability to experience deep, sustainable joy. How can we release expectations that don't serve us to create greater well-being? How can we turn inward to find our north star—the guiding light that allows us to be our best selves and live to the fullest? Join me and Dr. Jennifer Guttman to explore the six secrets of true joy and satisfaction. I'm firmly in my messy middle season of life and it's been a season of stretching, stripping away, meeting and befriending my True Self (or finally growing into my True Self). The past 13 years have also invited me deeper and deeper into freedom and joy. Greater freedom is one of the most important gifts of middle age.I care about Joyful living in every season – even the hardest of them. Choosing to allow joy into our lives amid heartache, struggle, uncertainty, and general life messiness is hard and brave work. I've done my share of hard and brave work. This is, of course, why I focus so much on the practice of making peace with messiness to make space for joy in our body and life. I emphasize the practice part. It's an ongoing commitment and some days are way harder than others. In this episode I discuss:What Rebranding Middle Age MeansHow I define middle ageWhat I mean when I talk about joyJoyful aging is simply part of joyful living in every seasonI believe joyful aging begins in our 40s, 50s, and 60s2 key things that support joyful aging and joyful living and these are things that we an work on or have a measure of control aroundLetting go of attachment to the past or to our old dreams is essential if we want to thrive forward or live joyfullyResources:Why You Need to Rebrand Middle Age to Live Joyfully: Why You Need To Rebrand Middle Age To Live Joyfully | A Life In ProgressJoin the Brave + Beautiful Community Autumn Session: Join the Brave + Beautiful Community For Midlife Women | A Life In ProgressSign up for the Monday morning Hope Map: Sign Up For The Monday Morning Hope Map | A Life In ProgressBook by Dr. Gladys McGarey: The Well-Lived Life: A 103-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age.You'll find my Hope Map Graphic on this page: Befriend Your True Self and (Re)Claim Freedom, Wholeness + JOY (alifeinprogress.ca)

At the age of 103, not only is today's guest the oldest I've ever welcomed onto my podcast, but she's also the oldest returning guest, too! Dr Gladys McGarey is the co-founder of the American Holistic Medical Association and the author of the fantastic book The Well-Lived Life: A 103-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age. She began her medical practice at a time when women couldn't even own their own bank accounts, and over the past sixty years, she's pioneered a new way of thinking about disease and health that's transformed the way we imagine health care and self-care around the world. In this wonderful and uplifting conversation, and with her trademark humour and compassion, Gladys offers profound insights on living with purpose, navigating adversity and finding healing within ourselves. We explore how to avoid living with regrets, the importance of parents truly listening to and supporting their children and finding your unique purpose that ‘feeds your soul'. We also look at how we can bring a more positive attitude to negative experiences and how Gladys lives by what she calls her "5 Ls" - life, love, laughter, labour and listening. Still thriving at 103, she embodies staying curious, adaptable and active. During our conversation, she shares her views on ageing, believing in ‘ageing into health' rather than ‘anti-ageing.' She also stresses the importance of doctors listening to - and loving - their patients but that it's ultimately us who are responsible for our own healing. Gladys's century of life experiences has something to offer everyone. Her wisdom will inspire you to reflect on your own purpose, face life's challenges with resilience and make the most of the years ahead. It was an honour to speak to Gladys again and have such a deep and honest conversation with her. I hope you enjoy listening to her as much as I did. Her playfulness, humour, and can-do attitude remind us that it's never too late to learn, grow and make a positive impact on the world around us. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes.
