Clare's defence of the All Ireland hurling title is in jeopardy following a second loss of the campaign. Tipperary scored four of the last five points of the game to secure a three point win against the Banner in Zimmer Biomet Pairc Chíosóg. It means Clare are now relying on other results in the final two rounds, and will need to beat Limerick at the TUS Gaelic Grounds in two weeks time to have any hope of progressing. Clare FM analyst Tommy Guilfoyle says Tipp got the important breaks once the game got back level.

Last week, we discussed Ennis 2040 DAC's decision to review its development plans. The DAC has agreed to review the controversial Abbey Street and Harvey's Quay projects to determine if they're "fit for purpose" and "add value" to the town. The two car park developments will be paused, in order to allow other projects to progress. The Post Office Field project will also be reviewed as part of this ‘reset'. However, the community group, "Hands Off Ennis Post Office Field” is still raising concerns over the project and has even suggested an alternative solution. A former Clare senior hurling captain claims the timing of the loss of Shane O'Donnell gives Brian Lohan's squad time to adapt ahead of the Munster Championship. The Clare boss confirmed yesterday that the reigning Hurler of the Year, Shane O'Donnell, will undergo surgery on a shoulder issue, ruling him out for the entirety of the 2025 intercounty season. The Banner's Munster campaign is edging ever closer, with Cork making the visit to Cusack Park on April 20th. Clare FM hurling analyst, Tommy Guilfoyle, says the injury would be much more detrimental to the squad, had it occurred later in the year.

Excitement levels in Feakle and Sixmilebridge are ratcheting up, ahead of Sunday's TUS Clare senior hurling final. Sixmilebridge are hoping to lift the Canon Hamilton Cup for a 16th time, in what is their first final appearance since 2020. However, Feakle's absence from the county's hurling showpiece stretches back much farther; the last of their six county titles came in their last final appearance all the way back in 1988, with a 44-year gap being bridged on that day. Sunday's decider in Cusack Park throws in at 3pm – a game you can, of course, hear live on Clare FM. It's claimed a lack of ambition from successive governments is to blame for Clare's housing crisis. According to a new report from independent Oireachtas agency, the Parliamentary Budget Office, a total of 4,646 households in this county are on the social housing list or availing of the Housing Assistance Payment. Since 2016, the state has constructed over 2,170 new social homes in Clare, but according to the PBO, national targets must rise by 56% just to meet current supply deficits. Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor and Clare Social Housing Committee member Tommy Guilfoyle insists an emergency response is needed.

It's been suggested renters in Clare aren't asking their landlords if they're registered for fear of eviction. It comes as new Oireachtas figures have highlighted an alarmingly low uptake in the rent tax credit this year. Clare FM's Seán Lyons reports. ===== When first introduced in 2022, the Rent Tax Credit or RTC, allowed renters to claim maximum tax relief of €1,000 in the case of a couple and €500 in all other cases. For this year and next year, that's been increased to €1,500 for couples and €750 for those in other circumstances. The uptake rate is noticeably low this year however with just 59,481 claims recorded nationwide so far - meaning roughly six in seven renters haven't yet made a claim. Just 770 claims have been made in Clare in 2024 to date - with €870 being the average claim value. To avail of the tax credit, a tenancy must be registered with the Residential Tenancy Board unless it's a licence arrangement such a when a tenant shares with the owner or is in a rent-a-room or digs arrangement. Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor and Clare Social Development Strategic Policy Committee member Tommy Guilfoyle believes renters are afraid to ask if they're entitled to the credit as they fear they'll lose the tenancy. [CLIP] Tenants can find out if their tenancy is registered by checking the "Check The Register" section of the RTB website. As of Budget 2024, the Rent Tax Credit can be claimed for digs or rent-a-room arrangements if you pay rent for your child attending third-level education. As per the stipulations of the tax credit, the landlord must not be a housing association or approved housing body, a local authority, your parent or your child. Threshold Campaigns Officer Cat Clark says because private rental supply is in such dire straits, penalising landlords who fail to register their properties isn't necessarily possible or advisable.

A member of Clare County Council's housing committee claims government policy has failed middle income earners in this county. It follows an independent report from the housing commission which estimates that 56,000 homes need to built from next year until 2034 in order address existing deficits and meet future demand. Last month, construction commenced on 188 new one-off houses in Clare, which is the highest total here since records began in 2014. Clarecastle Sinn Féin local election candidate Tommy Guilfoyle insists though the lack of affordable housing is locking a generation out of home ownership.
Clare FM's Syl O'Connor & Tommy Guilfoyle call the action as Clare beat Waterford in a dramatic Munster SHC tie in Cusack Park
It's claimed the local authority has the will but is being denied the funding to tackle Clare's housing crisis. It follows the Residential Tenancies Board final report for 2023, which shows the average price of renting for new tenants in this county is now over €1,300 per month. During April alone, a further 118 households here joined Clare County Council's approved social housing list. Clarecastle Sinn Féin local election candidate Tommy Guilfoyle, who's a member of the council's housing committee believes the Government could be allocating more funds to the local authority to provide social and affordable housing.
