Add your name and email to our friends of the show list, we'll never share it. Michael #1: PostgreSQL 18 Released PostgreSQL 18 is out (Sep 25, 2025) with a focus on faster text handling, async I/O, and easier upgrades. New async I/O subsystem speeds sequential scans, bitmap heap scans, and vacuum by issuing concurrent reads instead of blocking on each request. Major-version upgrades are smoother: pg_upgrade retains planner stats, adds parallel checks via -jobs, and supports faster cutovers with -swap. Smarter query performance lands with skip scans on multicolumn B-tree indexes, better OR optimization, incremental-sort merge joins, and parallel GIN index builds. Dev quality-of-life: virtual generated columns enabled by default, a uuidv7() generator for time-ordered IDs, and RETURNING can expose both OLD and NEW. Security gets an upgrade with native OAuth 2.0 authentication; MD5 password auth is deprecated and TLS controls expand. Text operations get a boost via the new PG_UNICODE_FAST collation, faster upper/lower, a casefold() helper, and clearer collation behavior for LIKE/FTS. Brian #2: Testing is better than DSA (Data Structures and Algorithms) Ned Batchelder If you need to grind through DSA problems to get your first job, then of course, do that, but if you want to prepare yourself for a career, and also stand out in job interviews, learn how to write tests. Testing is a skill you'll use constantly, will make you stand out in job interviews, and isn't taught well in school (usually). Testing code well is not obvious. It's a puzzle and a problem to solve. It gives you confidence and helps you write better code. Applies everywhere, at all levels. Notes from Brian Most devs suck at testing, so being good at it helps you stand out very quickly. Thinking about a system and how to test it often very quickly shines a spotlight on problem areas, parts with not enough specification, and fuzzy requirements. This is a good thing, and bringing up these topics helps you to become a super valuable team member. High level tests need to be understood by key engineers on a project. Even if tons of the code is AI generated. Even if many of the tests are, the people understanding the requirements and the high level tests are quite valuable. Michael #3: Pyrefly in Cursor/PyCharm/VSCode/etc Install the VSCode/Cursor extension or PyCharm plugin, see https://pyrefly.org/en/docs/IDE/ Brian spoke about Pyrefly in #433: Dev in the Arena I've subsequently had the team on Talk Python: #523: Pyrefly: Fast, IDE-friendly typing for Python (podcast version coming in a few weeks, see video for now.) My experience has been Pyrefly changes the feel of the editor, give it a try. But disable the regular language server extension. Brian #4: Playwright & pytest techniques that bring me joy Tim Shilling “I've been working with playwright more often to do end to end tests. As a project grows to do more with HTMX and Alpine in the markup, there's less unit and integration test coverage and a greater need for end to end tests.” Tim covers some cool E2E techniques Open new pages / tabs to be tested Using a pytest marker to identify playwright tests Using a pytest marker in place of fixtures Using page.pause() and Playwright's debugging tool Using assert_axe_violations to prevent accessibility regressions Using page.expect_response() to confirm a background request occurred From Brian Again, with more and more lower level code being generated, and many unit tests being generated (shakes head in sadness), there's an increased need for high level tests. Don't forget API tests, obviously, but if there's a web interface, it's gotta be tested. Especially if the primary user experience is the web interface, building your Playwright testing chops helps you stand out and let's you test a whole lot of your system with not very many tests. Extras Brian: Big O - By Sam Who Yes, take Ned's advice and don't focus so much on DSA, focus also on learning to test. However, one topic you should be comfortable with in algortithm-land is Big O, at least enough to have a gut feel for it. And this article is really good enough for most people. Great graphics, demos, visuals. As usual, great content from Sam Who, and a must read for all serious devs. Python 3.14.0rc3 has been available since Sept 18. Python 3.14.0 final scheduled for Oct 7 Django 6.0 alpha 1 released Django 6.0 final scheduled for Dec 3 Python Test Static hosting update Some interesting discussions around setting up my own server, but this seems like it might be yak shaving procrastination research when I really should be writing or coding. So I'm holding off until I get some writing projects and a couple SaaS projects further along. Joke: Always be backing up

MDJ Script/ Top Stories for September 24th Publish Date:  September 24th    Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Wednesday, September 24th and Happy Birthday to Jim Henson I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Mableton chemical plant applies for air quality permit for new process area Cobb to consider extending student housing moratorium Man arrested for shooting at victim’s car in Mableton payment dispute All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: INGLES 3 STORY 1: Mableton chemical plant applies for air quality permit for new process area  A Mableton chemical plant, Compass Chemical International, wants to expand. They’ve filed for an air quality permit with Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division to add a new process area at their Buckner Road site. The plan? To produce a proprietary lubricant additive—an alkyl phosphite blend (with or without dispersants, if you’re into the details). Mayor Michael Owens struck a balance: “We welcome businesses that invest in Mableton, but safety and clean air come first.” Councilwoman Patricia Auch added, “Permits like this are routine. If they meet the standards, it’s not necessarily harmful.” The permit’s under review. Public comments? Due by Oct. 17. STORY 2: Cobb to consider extending student housing moratorium  The Cobb County Board of Commissioners is gearing up to vote on extending a moratorium on student housing applications—again. If approved, it’ll be another 180 days of “pause” on new developments, pushing the freeze into spring 2026. This isn’t the first time. The ban started in October 2024, got extended in March, and now, here we are. Why? Kennesaw State’s booming enrollment has outpaced housing, and zoning battles have made things messy. Chair Lisa Cupid recently admitted students are struggling. Commissioner Keli Gambrill? Not a fan. “KSU needs to handle this,” she said bluntly. STORY 3: Man arrested for shooting at victim’s car in Mableton payment dispute Cesar Alexis Velazquez, 23, from Douglasville, is facing some serious charges after a heated argument over a cell phone repair turned dangerous. On Aug. 21, around 11:30 p.m., Velazquez allegedly fired two shots at a red 2011 Kia Optima outside a home on Joseph Club Drive in Mableton. The victim, who owns a phone repair business, had run back inside for safety. The dispute? Velazquez refused to pay for fixing a water-damaged phone but still left with it—gun in hand, according to police. He’s now charged with aggravated assault and theft of services. Arrested Sept. 9, he’s being held without bond. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.  We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 3 STORY 4: KSU student named Newman Civic Fellow  Kennesaw State senior Deja Boney has a knack for making a difference—and now, she’s a 2025 Newman Civic Fellow. It’s a big deal, a national recognition for students who lead with heart and hustle in their communities. Deja, an information systems major with an IT minor, has been everywhere—organizing cleanups, mentoring through Black Women Empowered, and tackling poverty with Circles Cobb. “It’s humbling,” she said, “to know the work I’m doing is seen beyond campus.” Her journey started with an OwlsServe Day, and now she’s a three-term KSU Service Fellow. Next stop? Chicago in October, connecting with other changemakers. STORY 5: Tickets for An Evening with David Sedaris on sale Oct. 17 Mark your calendars: David Sedaris—yes, the David Sedaris—is coming to Atlanta for one night only. The bestselling author and NPR favorite will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. on May 19 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center (2800 Cobb Galleria Parkway). Fresh off the release of A Carnival of Snackery and Pretty Ugly, Sedaris will share new stories, sharp observations, and probably a few laugh-out-loud moments. There’s also a Q&A and book signing. Tickets drop Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. Don’t wait. This one’s gonna sell out fast. Break: STORY 6: Pageant highlights opening night of North Georgia State Fair  Glitter, gowns, and big smiles lit up the stage at the Miss North Georgia State Fair Pageant, kicking off opening night at Jim Miller Park. Over 40 young ladies, from toddlers to college students, took their turn in the spotlight, each sparkling in their favorite dresses. Six winners were crowned, earning tiaras, banners, flowers, and fair passes—and the chance to serve as community ambassadors, riding in parades throughout the year. The big title, Miss NGSF, went to 19-year-old Lilli Bennett of Calhoun, a UGA freshman who’ll use her $1,000 scholarship toward school. The fair runs through Sept. 28—don’t miss it! STORY 7: Life U. men's rugby unveils new locker rooms Life University’s men’s rugby team had more than one reason to celebrate after their win over Army—they finally got to step into their brand-new locker rooms. On Saturday, the school cut the ribbon on the $75,000 renovation, a much-needed upgrade after 45 years. New floors, fresh lockers, and a space to prep for games—it’s a total transformation, funded by alumni donations and team fundraisers. But it’s more than just a facelift. Outside the locker room, a plaque honors past players who’ve passed away. Current players now touch it before every game—a quiet, powerful tribute. The locker room even features nameplates of alumni donors, a reminder of the legacy each player carries when they pull on that jersey. Founders Bobby Gise and Jim Hovey, now in their 70s, watched with pride as the team walked out with a new sense of confidence. Bright yellow and green, the space is ready for game day—and for the next generation of Running Eagles. We’ll have closing comments after this. My name is Thomas Domville, also known as AnonyMouse. If MagicTab has been kind of a pest for you, sometimes things can get frustrating for those that use a MagicTab. For example, if you're on a phone, you're calling somebody, sometimes you do a MagicTab to hang up on a phone call, right? Only to find out or to end up having the media being playing or the last audiobook's been playing, whatever this might be in the background, things like that. If that's been occurring quite a bit for you and it's something that frustrates you and wish you could be able to turn that option off, you can. So starting in iOS 26, you're now able to disable the magic tab when it comes to media playing. So this is not going to be for everyone, but I want to at least make this aware for everybody. So if this is one of those things that annoys you and you would like to have that option turned off because it occurs to you each and every time you don't want it to happen, have no fear. I'm going to show you how to turn that magic tap off. We're going to head over to the native settings.VoiceOver: Settings. A person who loses an immediate relative, Heaven forbid, has the status of "Onen" from the time of the family member's passing until the burial. During this period of "Aninut," he is exempt from all Misvot, including the recitation of Berachot. In order to ensure that he focuses his attention fully on the burial needs of the deceased, Halacha exempts an Onen from Misva obligation. In fact, it is improper for an Onen to perform Misvot, as this diminishes from his focus upon the needs of the deceased. One exception to this rule is wearing a Tallit Katan. Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (Jerusalem, 1910-1995) ruled that since the Tallit Katan is part of the mourner's normal attire, he may wear it even as an Onen, as it will not diminish from his focus on the burial. This is no different, Rav Shlomo Zalman noted, from Misvot that one fulfills in his thoughts, which may be fulfilled during the period of Aninut. May an Onen give charity? Rav Shlomo Zalman ruled that if an Onen wishes to give charity to benefit the soul of the deceased, then not only is this permissible, but to the contrary, it fulfills the objective of Aninut, which is to care for the needs of the deceased. It would therefore certainly be appropriate and even admirable for an Onen to give charity to benefit the soul of his deceased family member. If an Onen mistakenly recites a Beracha, those who hear the Beracha should not answer "Amen." Since the Beracha was unwarranted and should not have been recited, it does not warrant the response of "Amen." This is the view of Tosafot (Talmud commentaries by Medieval French and German scholars) in Masechet Mo'ed Katan (28). If a person becomes an Onen, Heaven forbid, during the period of Sefirat Ha'omer, may he count the Omer, so that he will not miss a full day of counting? In most cases, this question does not arise, because a person does not normally remain an Onen for an entire twenty-four-hour period. If a family member passed away at night, before one counted the Omer, it is likely that the burial will take place before sundown the following day, in which case he should count the Omer after the burial, when he is no longer an Onen. He would count the Omer without a Beracha, just as one does if he forgot to count at night and counts during the day. The question arises, however, in a situation where the burial did not take place before sundown on the following day, such that one remained an Onen throughout the 24 hours when the Omer could have been counted. If he does not count the Omer at some point during that day, he will then be unable to continue counting with a Beracha. Is he allowed to count the Omer despite his status as an Onen, or must he miss a day of counting? The Bei'ur Halacha (commentary by Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan of Radin, 1839-1933), in Siman 489, cites the view of the Noda B'yehuda (Rav Yechezkel Landau of Prague, 1713-1793) allowing an Onen to count the Omer without a Beracha in such a case, so that he does not miss an entire day of counting. Hacham Ovadia Yosef, however, disagrees, noting that if an individual is exempt from the obligation of Sefirat Ha'omer, then even if he counts, he will be considered to have missed a day of counting. If one counts the Omer when the Misva does not apply to him, then he is not considered as having fulfilled that day's obligation of counting, since he did not perform a Halachically mandated counting. As such, he will in any event be considered to have missed a day. Therefore, according to Hacham Ovadia, one should not count the Omer in a state of Aninut, even if this means that he will be unable to continue counting with a Beracha. Hacham Ovadia notes that this is the view taken by several other authorities, including the Shalmeh Sibur and Rav Haim Palachi. Summary: A person who loses an immediate relative, Heaven forbid, should not perform Misvot or recite Berachot until after the burial. If he mistakenly recites a Beracha, those who hear the Beracha should not answer "Amen." He may, however, wear a Tallit Katan, and give charity to benefit the soul of the deceased. If this happens during the Omer period, he should not count Sefirat Ha'omer, even if this means that he will miss a full day and thus be unable to continue counting with a Beracha. In most cases, however, the burial will take place before sundown, thus allowing the mourner to count the Omer before the end of the day.
