A clear definition of innocence AC 9262 [2] From all that has just been stated regarding innocence it may be seen that what is Divine and the Lord's cannot be received except within innocence. This being so, good is not good unless there is innocence within it, 2526, 2780, 3994, 6765, 7840, 7887, that is, unless there is the acknowledgement that from the self nothing but evil and falsity arises and that from the Lord comes all goodness and truth. Believing the former about the self, and believing the latter about the Lord and also desiring it to be so, are what constitutes innocence. Therefore the good of innocence is God's goodness itself coming from the Lord and residing with a person. So it is that 'the innocent' means a person governed by interior good and in the abstract sense means interior good. Innocence is the co-existence of the Lord and the hellish self AC 9301 [2] The innocence that dwells in wisdom consists in the man's knowing, acknowledging, and believing that he can understand nothing and will nothing from himself, and consequently in his not wishing to understand and will anything from himself, but only from the Lord; and also that whatever he supposes that he understands from himself is falsity; and whatever he supposes that he wills from himself is evil. This state of life is the state of innocence of the after state, in which are all who are in the third heaven, which is called “the heaven of innocence.” Hence it is that such are in wisdom, because all they understand and will is from the Lord.  But the innocence which dwells in ignorance, such as exists with infants and children, consists in believing that all they know and think, and also all they will is in themselves; and that all they speak and do from this thought and will is from themselves. That these are fallacies, they do not apprehend. The truths belonging to this innocence are for the most part founded upon the fallacies of the external senses; and these fallacies must be shaken off as the man advances toward wisdom. From these few words it can be seen that the good of innocence of the after state must not be conjoined with the truth of innocence of the former state. AC 10132[4]. It says that 'the wolf will dwell with the lamb' because 'the wolf' means those who are opposed to innocence, as also in the same prophet, The wolf and the lamb will feed together. They will not do evil nor destroy on all My holy mountain. Isaiah 65:25. And in Luke, Jesus said to the disciples whom He sent out, Behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Luke 10:3. [5] Since the Lord when He was in the world was — as to His Human — Innocence itself, and since for this reason innocence emanates wholly from Him, the Lord is called the Lamb, and the Lamb of God. Heaven and Hell 341 innocence is a willingness to be led by the Lord and not by oneself. Consequently, so far as a man is in innocence he is separated from his proprium, and so far as anyone is separated from his proprium he is in the Lord's proprium. The inner sense and literal sense in relation to innocence AC 7840...What is meant by the interior and the exterior good of innocence shall be briefly told. In every good there must be innocence that it may be good; without innocence good is as if without its soul. The reason is that the Lord flows in by means of innocence, and by means of it vivifies the good with those who are being regenerated. The good which innocence vivifies is internal and external; internal good is with those who are called men of the internal church; but external good is with those who are men of the external church. Men of the internal church are they who have qualified their good by means of interior truths, such as are those of the internal sense of the Word; but men of the external church are they who have qualified their good by means of exterior truths, such as are those of the literal sense of the Word.

Shortly after graduation, he reunited with his first love, football. His icon status required massive luck: friends published the First Folio (saving King Lear), then 50 years later, Charles II reopened England's theaters after Puritan closures and needed content. Companies turned to Shakespeare's IP, adapting his work (including changing tragedies to happy endings). Helen: "If anyone deserves to be called a genius, it's him. But he died as a successful man of his age. Scenius Over Genius - Brian Eno coined "scenius" - places that are unusually productive and creative. Shakespeare moved from Warwickshire to London for the theaters and playwrights. Helen: "You don't just have to be Leonardo, you also need Florence... Where do you find the coolest, most interesting bleeding edge of your field?" Modern example: Joe Rogan's Comedy Mothership in Austin created an alternative to LA/NYC for comedians like Shane Gillis and Tony Hinchcliffe. Ryan: "Put yourself in rooms where you feel like the dumbest person... force you to rise up, think differently, work harder." Elon Musk has a lot of children, talks about his genes needing to live on, and lives a very public life. Helen: "We overrate the self-promoters, the narcissists. We demand oddness and specialness... We don't call modest people geniuses because they're too normal." Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos) and Sam Bankman-Fried (FTX) exploited this - looked like a genius (Steve Jobs cosplay, messy math prodigy) but stood on houses of cards. Trauma and the "I'll Show You" Engine - Matthew Parris wrote Fracture after noticing how many "great lives" had traumatic childhoods - loss of parents, being unloved, bullied. Helen: "I don't think that's necessarily genius in objective achievement. It's more like a hunger for recognition or fame... a kind of 'I'll show all of you' engine." Stephen Hawking on IQ - Stephen Hawking: "I have no idea. People who boast about their IQ are losers." The Flynn Effect shows average IQ rose over the 20th century through better nutrition, schooling, and living conditions. Higher IQ correlates with better outcomes. But at the top end, every IQ point ≠ is one success point. Christopher Langan (the highest IQ guy) thinks he has a theory to overturn Einstein, and that Bush did 9/11 to cover it up. No history of achievement. Helen: "Smart people don't always prosper. You need the gears that connect the engine to the wheels on the road." Conspiracy Theories: Narcissism as Driver - Narcissism is the most correlated personality trait with conspiracy thinking. Helen: "The sheeple, the NPCs think this, but I alone have seen the truth. It positions you as the protagonist of reality." The Internet is a "confirmation bias engine." But conspiracies are sometimes true (Epstein's corrupt plea deal), which is why conspiracy thinking persists. Researcher Karen Stenner's solution: Get back to depoliticized conspiracies like Bigfoot, crop circles, Area 51 - harmless things that got people outside instead of "shoot up a pizza restaurant." The Beatles: Finiteness Creates Legend - Psychologist Han Isaac said geniuses should either die before 30 or live past 80. Middle is "eh." The Beatles had both: a short career that ended definitively, then John Lennon was shot at 40, frozen in time. Paul McCartney lives on, performs at Glastonbury with John's vocals. Craig Brown: "The Rolling Stones just go on and on, but there's never as much of the Beatles as you want." Quality Over Quantity - Helen: "Incentive now is producing constantly for algorithms... That's neither fun nor produces the best work." Early career: say YES. Later career: "The most important thing you can say is no." Her metric: "Can I say honestly, that was the best I could do? I didn't cut corners. That's the metric." Podcast: advised to do 2-3 episodes weekly for rankings, has been doing weekly for 10.5 years. Shows that went daily? He stopped listening. "I'm gonna increase the quality bar, not the quantity." Robert Greene: "Do not speak unless you can improve upon the silence." Improving the Silence - "My dad's not the loudest at family gatherings, doesn't have the most words, but when he speaks, we all stop and listen. That's who you want to be." Applies to meetings: people vomit garbage to show how smart they are instead of waiting for something valuable. When you speak, people should want to listen. Thomas Edison: Execution Over Ideas - The Light bulb wasn't Edison's conceptual innovation - the idea dated to Humphrey Davy. What was incredible: Edison made it work (vacuum seal, filament) and created the New York power grid. Helen: "Lots of people can have the idea that a man should be an ant. Not everybody can write the Ant-Man screenplay and have it produced." His Menlo Park lab lasted because he worked with brilliant people on problems they cared about. Logbook shows assistants' names on breakthroughs - collaborative. We underrate logistics and execution. Most "light bulb moments" are actually slow, incremental, contested creations. Why Helen Chooses Teams Over Independence - Could go independent on Substack for more money. Works at The Atlantic for: resources, legal support, editorial integrity, and colleagues she doesn't want to let down. Helen: "You must have people in your life, you think, I wanna do work that they like. Finding those people who make you your best version of yourself." Ryan connects to athletics: "Being surrounded by people better than me forces me to raise my game. That's why we want to be part of a great team." Sample First, Specialize Later - High achievers have "hot streak" later, but sample early - trying different things, learning transferable skills. Helen: "Take the first job at a publication you could learn from. Even if not wildly interested, if it's good and they'll hold you to high standards, do it. Your second job is infinitely easier to get than your first." Work Around People Who Care - Helen: "If you work somewhere where no one cares, it's very hard. You can't care on your own. You'll become infected by the apathy around you." Nothing is more boring than a job you don't care about. Don't Wait to Live - Some devote long hours to something for money, promising they'll retire at 30 and then live. Helen: "What if you spent all that time chasing something and then you get hit by a truck? Don't wait for it. Just try and enjoy what you're doing right now." Quotes: "You don't just have to be Leonardo, you also need Florence."  "We overrate the self-promoters and underrate the humble achievers."  "Smart people don't always prosper. You need the gears that connect the engine to the wheels."  "The most important thing you can say is no."  "Do not speak unless you can improve upon the silence." - Robert Greene "You can't care on your own. You'll become infected by the apathy around you."  It's funny that we have come to use the phrase ‘lightbulb moment' to describe a momentary flash of inspiration, because the birth of the lightbulb was slow, incremental, and highly contested.

Michael #1: PostgreSQL 18 Released PostgreSQL 18 is out (Sep 25, 2025) with a focus on faster text handling, async I/O, and easier upgrades. New async I/O subsystem speeds sequential scans, bitmap heap scans, and vacuum by issuing concurrent reads instead of blocking on each request. Major-version upgrades are smoother: pg_upgrade retains planner stats, adds parallel checks via -jobs, and supports faster cutovers with -swap. Smarter query performance lands with skip scans on multicolumn B-tree indexes, better OR optimization, incremental-sort merge joins, and parallel GIN index builds. Dev quality-of-life: virtual generated columns enabled by default, a uuidv7() generator for time-ordered IDs, and RETURNING can expose both OLD and NEW. Security gets an upgrade with native OAuth 2.0 authentication; MD5 password auth is deprecated and TLS controls expand. Text operations get a boost via the new PG_UNICODE_FAST collation, faster upper/lower, a casefold() helper, and clearer collation behavior for LIKE/FTS. Brian #2: Testing is better than DSA (Data Structures and Algorithms) Ned Batchelder If you need to grind through DSA problems to get your first job, then of course, do that, but if you want to prepare yourself for a career, and also stand out in job interviews, learn how to write tests. Testing is a skill you'll use constantly, will make you stand out in job interviews, and isn't taught well in school (usually). Testing code well is not obvious. It's a puzzle and a problem to solve. It gives you confidence and helps you write better code. Applies everywhere, at all levels. Notes from Brian Most devs suck at testing, so being good at it helps you stand out very quickly. Thinking about a system and how to test it often very quickly shines a spotlight on problem areas, parts with not enough specification, and fuzzy requirements. This is a good thing, and bringing up these topics helps you to become a super valuable team member. High level tests need to be understood by key engineers on a project. Even if tons of the code is AI generated. Even if many of the tests are, the people understanding the requirements and the high level tests are quite valuable. My experience has been Pyrefly changes the feel of the editor, give it a try. But disable the regular language server extension. Brian #4: Playwright & pytest techniques that bring me joy Tim Shilling “I've been working with playwright more often to do end to end tests. As a project grows to do more with HTMX and Alpine in the markup, there's less unit and integration test coverage and a greater need for end to end tests.” Tim covers some cool E2E techniques Open new pages / tabs to be tested Using a pytest marker to identify playwright tests Using a pytest marker in place of fixtures Using page.pause() and Playwright's debugging tool Using assert_axe_violations to prevent accessibility regressions Using page.expect_response() to confirm a background request occurred From Brian Again, with more and more lower level code being generated, and many unit tests being generated (shakes head in sadness), there's an increased need for high level tests. Don't forget API tests, obviously, but if there's a web interface, it's gotta be tested. Especially if the primary user experience is the web interface, building your Playwright testing chops helps you stand out and let's you test a whole lot of your system with not very many tests. Extras Brian: Big O - By Sam Who Yes, take Ned's advice and don't focus so much on DSA, focus also on learning to test. However, one topic you should be comfortable with in algortithm-land is Big O, at least enough to have a gut feel for it. And this article is really good enough for most people. They’ve filed for an air quality permit with Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division to add a new process area at their Buckner Road site. The plan? To produce a proprietary lubricant additive—an alkyl phosphite blend (with or without dispersants, if you’re into the details). Mayor Michael Owens struck a balance: “We welcome businesses that invest in Mableton, but safety and clean air come first.” Councilwoman Patricia Auch added, “Permits like this are routine. If they meet the standards, it’s not necessarily harmful.” The permit’s under review. Public comments? Due by Oct. 17. STORY 2: Cobb to consider extending student housing moratorium  The Cobb County Board of Commissioners is gearing up to vote on extending a moratorium on student housing applications—again. If approved, it’ll be another 180 days of “pause” on new developments, pushing the freeze into spring 2026. This isn’t the first time. The ban started in October 2024, got extended in March, and now, here we are. Why? Kennesaw State’s booming enrollment has outpaced housing, and zoning battles have made things messy. Chair Lisa Cupid recently admitted students are struggling. Commissioner Keli Gambrill? Not a fan. “KSU needs to handle this,” she said bluntly. STORY 3: Man arrested for shooting at victim’s car in Mableton payment dispute Cesar Alexis Velazquez, 23, from Douglasville, is facing some serious charges after a heated argument over a cell phone repair turned dangerous. On Aug. 21, around 11:30 p.m., Velazquez allegedly fired two shots at a red 2011 Kia Optima outside a home on Joseph Club Drive in Mableton. The victim, who owns a phone repair business, had run back inside for safety. The dispute? Velazquez refused to pay for fixing a water-damaged phone but still left with it—gun in hand, according to police. He’s now charged with aggravated assault and theft of services. STORY 7: Life U. men's rugby unveils new locker rooms Life University’s men’s rugby team had more than one reason to celebrate after their win over Army—they finally got to step into their brand-new locker rooms. On Saturday, the school cut the ribbon on the $75,000 renovation, a much-needed upgrade after 45 years. New floors, fresh lockers, and a space to prep for games—it’s a total transformation, funded by alumni donations and team fundraisers. But it’s more than just a facelift. Outside the locker room, a plaque honors past players who’ve passed away. Current players now touch it before every game—a quiet, powerful tribute. The locker room even features nameplates of alumni donors, a reminder of the legacy each player carries when they pull on that jersey. Founders Bobby Gise and Jim Hovey, now in their 70s, watched with pride as the team walked out with a new sense of confidence.
