It restricts sinners from giving in to sin, convicts sinners of their sins, and instructs Christians on how to live.

Brian Purcell may have founded Atlanta's Three Taverns nine years ago to focus on Belgian-style beers, but today it's the spirit of that brewing tradition that informs their approach more than a purely stylistic expression. Creativity balanced with drinkability still drives their brewing decisions, whether that's brewing an American-hopped modern pils expression in conjunction with the team from Pivovar Proud (the experimental brewery of Pilsner Urquell), or tackling the expressive fermentation of hazy IPA. In this episode, Purcell and head brewer Neal Engleman break down these beers, from the knockout-hopped Pils Liberation collaboration (with Citra and Cascade), to their popular hazy IPA. Along the way, they discuss: brewing the collaborative pils with Citra, Cascade, and Saaz hops knockout hopping the 34/70 fermentation impacts on lager fermentation from the aggressive hopping applying lessons learned to other lagers they brew brewing their 9th anniversary English-style barleywine ingredient selection for better mashing with hazy IPA active versus post-fermentation dry hopping And more. In this "Best of" episode from November 2021,  A'ndre and Ryan speak to retired Four Star General Stanley McChrystal about his new book Risk: A User's Guide, applying the principles of risk management to the War in Afghanistan -- a situation the General is very familiar with. We ask General McChrystal to discuss what he defines as the 'Risk Immune System', and to explain the 'Risk Control Factors' that he outlines in the book. General McChrystal, famed for creating a comprehensive counterinsurgency strategy in Afghanistan, applies those Risk Control Factors to the situation in Afghanistan, talking about how factors such as narrative, bias, leadership, why we shouldn't fall for the 'Myth of Helplessness' in assessing our performance and failures in Afghanistan. General McChrystal also touches on the issue of diversity -- not necessarily simply diversity in identity, but rather diversity of thought, experience, perspectives, skillsets, and expertise -- and why the U.S. Government and U.S. military were not using diversity on the battlefield. The retired General is also candid about his own successes and failures during his service in Afghanistan, while also offering thoughts on solutions for better risk management -- and whether it was ever too late to apply these solutions to Afghanistan. You can check out General McChrystal's new book Risk: A User's Guide here.

Why is it important for a statistician to take the culture of the first mover advantage on a more personal level? How do the first-mover advantages help the personal and professional growth of a statistician? What does it take to be the first mover? How does being the first mover solve problems early? How do you develop the motivation to be the first mover? In this conversation, we talk about the effective impact of the first-mover advantage. To give a more visual distinction of this strategy, it is more like a chess game where the first mover often decides the direction of the game. In statistics, this attitude offers a more effective sense of understanding what the first move culture is all about. Here are some of the lessons that are presented in this conversation:

Hey, friends welcome to another bonus track episode on Everybody Speaks Music and today's a special one, you're gonna get to hear my recent training session with Ean Kramer. Ean was on our show a few weeks ago and he graciously invited me to come to his dojo and train. Now as awesome as that sounds, it comes with a bunch of anticipation nerves, and I wanted to capture that part of the journey. So as soon as I hopped in the van, I hit record. And it was interesting to just process my thoughts. Normally, I'd be meditating, listening to some calm music, or doing something to take my mind off of it. So recording this episode was great because it leapt deep into my subconscious, all the warts and all the embarrassing moments are there for you to laugh about. And then we recorded the aftermath. What happened after my two hour training session, and I really hope you get a lot of value out of that. Because often I find as a musician, it's best to look outside of my craft to pick up new tips and tricks. So whether that's looking into athletics, or business, or any other domain, I can take those concepts and bring them back into how I approach my practicing, and how I approach my growth as a musician. And Ean does an amazing job of laying out the parallels between martial arts and music. He uses the analogy of the body as being the instrument. And I think you're gonna find a lot of interesting parallels there. And at the very end of the episode, I'm also going to attach a clip of Ean, where he did a follow up from the episode he wanted to dive even deeper into the parallels of music and martial arts. So I hope you enjoyed today's bonus episode. Thanks for listening. And don't forget to go out and and face your fears, do the things that you really want to do, even if they feel uncomfortable. We all feel that natural resistance to doing things that are new, and uncomfortable. But I can tell you from this experience with in how much pain intention of properly guided training session could actually remove from my body. Thanks again.

In this episode, Chris speaks with Dr. Johnny Guimaraes, Vice President of Information Technology and Data Analytics at Thriving Mind South Florida. Johnny discusses his journey of leadership and how he ended up where he is now while sticking to his morals. Johnny's adventure to becoming a Vice President at Thriving Mind came with many ups and downs. However, it is due to his morals and strict belief that doors would open for him that got him to his position now. Right after undergrad, Johnny found his first mentor at his first job at an insurance company. His mentor here always pushed Johnny to become better, stick to his morals, and gain more experience. This mindset is what fast tracked Johnny's future endeavors. A couple jobs later, Johnny's decision making skills and morals were truly put to the test. In this role, Johnny would do what was morally right or turn a blind eye to things against his morals. This became a daunting decision given that it would mean speaking out against a superior. Johnny stuck to his morals and realized this was the correct decision as he was rewarded later when he least expected it. Through experiences like this, Johnny is confident in his ability to do what he does best and to help others. As an adjunct professor at Miami Dade College, he teaches his students and others the importance of morals. He also emphasizes the importance of leading with morality because that is what other people will notice. One of his other biggest pieces of advice is to stay humble as humility goes a long way.As Johnny continues inspiring the next generation, Johnny leaves us with one thing: be open to any door that opens or closes. As long as you stick by your morals and stay humble, doors will open for you. He joins us now to share how he confronts his morals through all leadership positions he's been in and how the next generation can do the same.
