President Construction Project is back at it with another way to spend money. Trump called reporters to the South Lawn for an impromptu tour of his new driveway replacement and a look at the progress on his new helipad. Trump also says the driveway is getting an upgrade with California-mined white granite that he says is more fitting for the White House. Standing near the carved granite helipad with the presidential seal, Trump presented the construction as a central part of his legacy. Speaking of goings on at the White House, we are learning more about the odd relationship between Trump and his aide Natalie Harp. Reports indicate that she once rode in the trunk when there weren't enough seats in Trump's vehicle so they wouldn't be separated...and that for more than a year, she refused to get a security clearance.

Daniel Rowland and Mikael are back for another research roundup with four recent studies. What blood biomarkers do and do not tell you about training load in elite triathletes, why two athletes with the same VO2max can have very different thresholds, what actually predicts running injuries in a cohort of 5,200 runners, and whether supersets deliver the same strength gains in a third less gym time. HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: VLaMax (maximal glycolytic flux) and metabolic thresholds: the first evidence in real athletes that at a given VO2max, a higher glycolytic rate means a lower threshold power. How VLaMax is measured, why sprint power on its own tells you little to nothing, and whether you can and should measure it and base training decisions off it. How much running is too much: in 5,205 runners tracked over 18 months, a single run 10 to 30% longer than the longest run of the previous 30 days came with a 64% higher injury risk, and bigger jumps than that led to injury risk increasing by well over 100%. Why the acute:chronic workload ratio and the classic weekly 10% rule showed little or no relationship with injury, and why you should never use the performance management chart for controlling running load. Practical long run progression for a marathon or an Ironman, and the one TrainingPeaks chart Mikael looks at more than any other. Four seasons of blood urea and creatine kinase in 20 elite (some world class) triathletes: urea tracks training load, CK does not, and a single reading against a reference range means almost nothing. Why the ratio of objective to subjective training load may be the most useful signal a coach has, and a heuristic for using it in practice. Supersets versus traditional sets: the same strength, hypertrophy, power and body composition gains in 36% less time, 44 minutes per session against 69, and how to apply that to a triathlete's lower body dominant strength programme. Saudi Arabia – World's Largest AI HackathonKanz (AI hiring platform) ran an 8-day free event (July 15–22) targeting 100,000 complete beginners — teachers, job seekers, business owners, etc. — with the goal of a Guinness World Record. Participants built real apps/agents using no-code tools (Lovable, n8n, Replit, Magnific, Claude, etc.) and earned certificates plus portfolio projects. Registration surged past 50,000. It builds on prior programs with strong female participation and workforce outcomes. Upshot: AI building no longer requires a coding background; accessible programs are becoming genuine on-ramps.2. California – DROP Data Deletion PlatformThe Delete Act's DROP platform (live Jan 2026) lets California residents submit one request to delete data from ~600 registered data brokers. Identity verification uses California Identity Gateway/Login.gov; identifiers are normalized and hashed so the state never sees or shares raw personal data. Brokers must check every 45 days from Aug 1, 2026, fully delete matches, and report back. Applies to large processors worldwide; heavy fines and future audits. Upshot: A privacy win worth using if you're in California; likely to be copied elsewhere.3. Australia – Origin Energy BreachAustralia's largest energy provider confirmed a breach potentially affecting a large portion of its ~5 million customers (hacker claimed ~2 million). Sensitive PII was leaked online. Utility data heightens risks for identity theft and further infrastructure attacks. Upshot: Change passwords and watch for phishing if affected.4. Anthropic – Claude Opus 5New flagship model launched at $5/$25 per million tokens (half Fable 5's input price), with 1M token context and adjustable “effort” levels. It outperforms or matches its pricier sibling on key benchmarks. Upshot: Forces reevaluation of vendor pricing vs. performance for coding/knowledge work.5. Kimi K3 – Largest Open-Weight ModelMoonshot AI released a 2.8-trillion-parameter model (1.4 TB weights). Within days, it was used to discover dozens of zero-days and build working exploits far faster than before. Fully open weights mean no usage restrictions. Upshot: Major step-change for vulnerability research timelines; treat as a serious new threat-intelligence factor.6. South Korea – 10-Month Diplomatic BreachAttackers accessed the National Diplomatic Academy system undetected from April 2025 to February 2026, stealing data on ~6,000 Ministry of Foreign Affairs personnel (including 360 overseas diplomats). Upshot: Dwell time is the bigger issue — invest in better detection.7. Suno Music-AI Breach (Nov 2025)55 million users' names, phones, and addresses exposed; only now public ~8 months later. Upshot: Check Have I Been Pwned; AI company breaches can stay hidden for long periods.8. U.S. – AI Kill Switch ActBipartisan bill (Reps. Lieu & Moran, introduced July 23) requires frontier models (≥$100M training cost) to maintain shutdown/throttling capability. DHS (with Commerce & DNI) could order action for catastrophic risks. Fines up to $20M/day. Predates recent high-profile AI incidents but cites them. Upshot: Frontier developers should assess compliance readiness; some form of this is increasingly likely.

Valkea Resources CEO Thomas Credland discussed the company's new 24-target drill pipeline in Finland's Central Lapland belt. KNOW THE LAW — WHAT CHANGED ON JULY 1, 2026 Five new Virginia traffic-related laws worth knowing: • SPEED MONITORING DEVICES — Courts can now order a speed monitoring device (like an ignition interlock, but for speed) as an alternative to license suspension for reckless-by-speed convictions. Anyone convicted of driving 100+ mph SHALL be required to have one for a set period. DMV can also order one for habitual speeders under the "rapid points" scenario. Cost is paid by the driver. • HELMET REQUIREMENT — Anyone 14 or younger must wear a helmet on motorized skateboards or scooters (motorized or non-motorized). E-bikes are covered under separate existing legislation, and local ordinances are being developed county-by-county. • AUTISM AWARENESS INTERACTION PROTOCOLS — Law enforcement is being trained on interactions with drivers or passengers on the autism spectrum. Drivers can now present a packet during a stop to help mitigate a stressful interaction. Does NOT exempt drivers from any rules of the road. • HANDS-FREE LAW UPDATE — First-time offenders can now be offered a driver improvement course as an alternative resolution. Also: it is now illegal to initiate, participate in, or interact with a live stream while driving (whether the phone is in your hand or in a holder). • UNATTENDED FIREARMS IN VEHICLES — Firearms left in vehicles must be secured in a locked box or container. Applies whether the vehicle is parked or unattended. KNOW THE RULES — MAIN STREET U-TURNS AND PARKING A few clarifications for parking in downtown areas: • You cannot park facing against the direction of travel — parking must face the direction of the flow of traffic in the lane where you're parked. (Frederick County ordinance; Front Royal likely has a similar town ordinance.) • You cannot make a U-turn across a double solid yellow line. No sign is required saying "no U-turn" — the double solid line itself prohibits the crossing. • You CAN legally cross a double yellow line to enter a driveway or parking entryway. Look for the visible break in the double line. • A missing witness doesn't make an infraction legal. FIREWORKS — WHAT'S ILLEGAL IN VIRGINIA Direct from the Fire Marshal's office. In Virginia and Frederick County, any firework that: • Explodes • Propels itself into the air • Travels horizontally • Shoots flaming balls ...is illegal. That specifically includes mortars, rockets, Roman candles, artillery shells, and firecrackers (this list is not exhaustive). The community alternative: attend one of the many public fireworks displays across the Shenandoah Valley over the July 4th weekend. The Office of Personnel Management is applying artificial intelligence to modernize the writing of position descriptions in the hiring process. OPM Director Scott Kupor touted the agency's new USA Class tool during an interview at the UiPath Fusion conference, presented by FedScoop, as a way to streamline notoriously slow and complex federal hiring. The federal government “has a lot of jobs,” the director said, with more than 600 classifications and a workforce north of 2 million civilian federal employees. “So the ‘n factorial' is pretty significant.” Kupor said OPM sought to leverage AI's strength in digesting large volumes of information — in this case, thousands of existing job descriptions — to train a model, and then prompted it to create new position descriptions aligned with OPM's classification standards. Federal hiring managers then review the outputs to ensure accuracy, further strengthening the model. The Pentagon plans to require service members to complete cybersecurity training once every three years, DefenseScoop has learned, a move that will scrap an annual mandate and is set to upend the Army's recent shift to a five-year requirement. In a Sep. 30 memo, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directed the military to “restore mission focus” by reducing, consolidating or eliminating a slew of mandatory courses, such as cybersecurity training, that he said were distracting from the military's core job of fighting wars. Hegseth did not specify by how much the services should “relax the mandatory frequency” of cybersecurity training, and by February, the Army issued its own directive that required soldiers to take the course once every five years instead of annually, DefenseScoop reported. But more than a month after the service's directive, the Pentagon is moving to require troops to conduct cybersecurity training once every three years, according to a recent memo reviewed by the publication and a senior defense official, which would effectively overrule the Army's move.
