This week, Rachel and Lynne are chatting with friend of the pod, Bernadette Schwerdt, a copy coach, comms expert and ghostwriter, to discuss how writers can build valuable, scalable businesses and multiple income streams in the age of AI. Bernadette explains why demand is rising for copywriting and ghostwriting as CEOs and thought leaders invest in personal branding and content that connects audiences to the person behind the business, including books as "sales reps" and long-term content engines. Drawing on interviews for her new book Secrets of the New Online Entrepreneurs, she outlines traits of successful founders: deep industry apprenticeships, resilience, attention to detail, not taking criticism personally, and solving real problems with strong distribution. For freelancers, she recommends niching by what you love, what you're good at and what pays, building systems, databases and a sales mindset, and focusing on storytelling frameworks and follow-up. OPM applies AI to modernize federal job descriptions

The Daily Scoop Podcast

The Office of Personnel Management is applying artificial intelligence to modernize the writing of position descriptions in the hiring process. OPM Director Scott Kupor touted the agency's new USA Class tool during an interview at the UiPath Fusion conference, presented by FedScoop, as a way to streamline notoriously slow and complex federal hiring. The federal government “has a lot of jobs,” the director said, with more than 600 classifications and a workforce north of 2 million civilian federal employees. “So the ‘n factorial' is pretty significant.” Kupor said OPM sought to leverage AI's strength in digesting large volumes of information — in this case, thousands of existing job descriptions — to train a model, and then prompted it to create new position descriptions aligned with OPM's classification standards. Federal hiring managers then review the outputs to ensure accuracy, further strengthening the model. The Pentagon plans to require service members to complete cybersecurity training once every three years, DefenseScoop has learned, a move that will scrap an annual mandate and is set to upend the Army's recent shift to a five-year requirement. In a Sep. 30 memo, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directed the military to “restore mission focus” by reducing, consolidating or eliminating a slew of mandatory courses, such as cybersecurity training, that he said were distracting from the military's core job of fighting wars. Hegseth did not specify by how much the services should “relax the mandatory frequency” of cybersecurity training, and by February, the Army issued its own directive that required soldiers to take the course once every five years instead of annually, DefenseScoop reported. But more than a month after the service's directive, the Pentagon is moving to require troops to conduct cybersecurity training once every three years, according to a recent memo reviewed by the publication and a senior defense official, which would effectively overrule the Army's move. What if the best business mentor you never had wasn't a person at all? In this episode, Chris Gilmour, educator, wilderness guide, course creator, and resilience consultant, shares how a fascination with wildlife tracking in his early twenties led him to one of the most unique and meaningful careers imaginable. Over two decades, Chris has taught thousands of people how to grow food, navigate the wild, and build resilience, not as a doomsday prepper, but as a practical, grounded human being who understands that nature has been solving complex problems long before we arrived. His work sits at the intersection of ecology, emergency preparedness, and ancestral wisdom, and it all traces back to one man: John Young, who taught Chris to track deer and inadvertently taught him how to see the patterns that run through everything.   [00:03:40] What He Does and Who He Serves Educator, wilderness guide, and resilience consultant Helps individuals and organizations reconnect with nature and build resilience Works with businesses, municipalities, and hospitals on preparedness and resilience audits [00:04:40] Where It All Started Got into wilderness guiding in his early twenties Became obsessed with reading wildlife tracks, weather patterns, and birdsong Those skills taught him pattern recognition and how to connect the dots in complex systems [00:06:00] Reconnecting People with the Land Humans have lost a deep connection to the land that shaped us for thousands of years Ancestral skills still train our brains and bodies in ways that matter today Time in nature calms the nervous system and restores balance amid constant tech and noise [00:07:00] Holistic Preparedness Not doomsday prepping; a practical, non-fear-based approach to an uncertain world Helps individuals, communities, and organizations adapt to extreme weather, pandemics, and financial disruption Bridges emergency management expertise with ecology for a uniquely holistic angle [00:08:20] Resilient Design Lives on a small homestead, growing food and balancing land-based living with consulting work Applies sustainable agricultural thinking to how businesses and individuals hold up under pressure What makes a food system locally resilient also makes a business resilient to disruption [00:09:40] What Inspires Him: Million Dollar Relationships Sitting alone in a hotel restaurant at 10pm on a work trip, had a profound epiphany Realized no amount of money would make him stop doing this work Sent Kevin an email that same night after thinking about what a million dollar relationship really means Confirmed he is living his life's purpose and would not trade it [00:14:40] How He Helps People Who Feel Overwhelmed Most people either ignore the anxiety or spiral into extreme prepper mode; neither works Humans are born survivors; reframing that story is the first step Audits organizations, maps every vulnerability, then finds the low-hanging fruit Small proactive steps create immediate relief; you sleep better when you've done something [00:19:20] Client Impact: The Young Man Who Came Full Circle Worked with at-risk youth in his early guiding days, taking young offenders into the wilderness One young man with a severe alcohol problem resurfaced years later in a very dark place Chris used his network to land him a summer job with a park warden in remote backcountry He is now seven years sober, a father, and works with at-risk youth through nature connection [00:24:00] The Relationship That Changed Everything: John Young A friend introduced Chris to John Young in his early twenties John is an author, TED speaker, and founder of schools focused on land connection Chris went to learn tracking but John was really teaching pattern recognition and systems thinking That foundation led Chris to study emergency management and eventually consult with hospitals and municipalities [00:27:40] What John Planted That Grew into Everything John introduced the idea that culture can be designed intentionally That sparked Chris's obsession with patterns across healthy cultures, communities, and ecosystems The pattern thinking John taught is the foundation for every client conversation Chris has today [00:31:20] What Being a Tracker Really Means Tracking started as reading animal prints; it became something far bigger Now it means tracking ripples across time, culture, business, and human relationships The mission is applying ancient pattern wisdom to the most complex modern challenges Healthy humans, ecosystems, and businesses all share the same resilience patterns   KEY QUOTES "I realized that if I had millions of dollars in the bank, I would still be sitting here working on my notes to go serve this community. That relationship is literally worth more than a million dollars to me." — Chris Gilmour "John taught me to track deer. That led me down this deep rabbit hole that basically led to how I do my work today." — Chris Gilmour "Healthy humans are more resilient. Healthy ecosystems are more resilient. Healthy businesses are more resilient. How do we put those all together? That's my sacred question." — Chris Gilmour CONNECT WITH CHRIS GILMOUR

Episode 50: The Buckeye Institute v. Internal Revenue ServiceThe Buckeye Institute v. Internal Revenue Service, argued before Senior Judge R. Guy Cole, Jr., Judge Richard Allen Griffin, and Judge Chad A. Readler of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit on April 29, 2026. Argued by Institute for Free Speech Senior Attorney Brett Nolan (on behalf of The Buckeye Institute) and Michael Weisbuch (on behalf of the federal government). Case Summary, from the Institute for Free Speech website:  The Buckeye Institute filed a lawsuit challenging a tax law that forces the IRS to demand that nonprofit charities disclose the private information of their largest donors each year. Represented by attorneys at the Institute for Free Speech and its own attorneys, Buckeye's lawsuit says the law violates the First Amendment and the requirement chills free speech and association. The IRS has admitted that it does not need these donor records, and it issued a rule in 2020 to stop collecting the same from other tax-exempt groups that are not classified as section 501(c)(3) nonprofit charities. The agency noted in that 2020 rulemaking that its collection of this sensitive personal data on Form 990 Schedule B “poses a risk of inadvertent disclosure” of private, non-public information. Even though the IRS has stated in similar contexts that it would prefer not to collect this information from charities, federal law requires doing so for 501(c)(3)s.  The lawsuit claims that Buckeye's work “would be significantly damaged” if it could not maintain the confidentiality of its donor relationships, as Buckeye's supporters “risk retribution from some who oppose its mission.” The recent leak to ProPublica of “a vast trove of Internal Revenue Service data on the tax returns of thousands” of individual taxpayers and other IRS leaks understandably give financial supporters of certain charities, including Buckeye, justified pause...A special procedure in federal law allows federal appellate courts to review a ruling before the case is decided. That's the situation in this appeal. The government disagreed with Judge Watson's ruling that exacting scrutiny applied, and asked the appeals court for permission to review his opinion. Both Judge Watson and the Sixth Circuit granted the request for review. Statement of Issues, from the Appellee's Brief:Whether exacting scrutiny governs a First Amendment challenge to 26 U.S.C. § 6033(b)(5)'s requirement that nonprofit organizations disclose their “substantial contributors.”Whether the Court can enter judgment against the plaintiff-appellee, determining that § 6033(b)(5) does not violate the First Amendment, without affording the plaintiff-appellee an opportunity for discovery or factual development. Resources:    Institute for Free Speech case page (contains all documents)Opening Brief for the AppellantAppellee's BriefSixth Circuit Order Granting the Petition for Interlocutory ReviewInstitute for Free Speech Blog Post, “Court: IRS Donor Disclosure Law Must Overcome Exacting Scrutiny”The Institute for Free Speech promotes and defends the political speech rights to freely speak, assemble, publish, and petition the government guaranteed by the First Amendment. What kind of money are we talking about? The why behind the holdings? A podcast production secret --- and so much more! Enjoy! In this third edition of Unfiltered, I talk about the one question I always start with when someone entrusts me with their capital, what multi-generational wealth really means (and why it's a mindset, not a number), the expensive truth about cheap stocks, why I came for the puzzle but stayed for the people, how AI is reshaping the advisory world — and the doorman fallacy that should make us all pause before we automate too much. I also share what I've been obsessing about lately, from Wittgenstein's family story to the art of giving, and I let you in on a little secret about what happened recently after I stopped a certain recording.Highlights:“What kind of money are we talking about?” — The most important question in investing isn't about returns or risk tolerance. It's understanding the story behind the capital — how it was accumulated, what it means emotionally, and what losing or growing it would feel like. Context shapes everything.Multi-generational wealth is a mindset, not an amount. A family with $100K who thinks about legacy and stewardship has a multi-generational fortune. A family with billions who doesn't think beyond their own lifetime does not. More families than ever are entering this mindset.“I came for the puzzle, but I stayed for the people.” The intellectual challenge of investing draw me in, but the human dimension — serving families across generations, building something cathedral-like brick by brick — is what keeps me going. The expensive truth about cheap stocks. Frugal savers are drawn to what looks cheap, but cheap stocks can create more trouble than seemingly expensive businesses with long runways. Quality is like a 30-year-old Toyota still on the road — it wasn't the cheapest, but it outlasted everything. The doorman fallacy and AI. Borrowed from Rory Sutherland's doorman analogy — replacing human roles with automation by reducing them to their most visible function misses the invisible value. Applies to advisory work, customer service, and anywhere human presence matters.Families who rebuild vs. families who build for the first time. First-generation wealth builders are in foreign territory. Families rebuilding after loss are returning to something remembered. Both are powerful, but the relationship with wealth is fundamentally different.Playing the long game means playing forever. Don't think about how quickly you can win — think about how long you can continue to play. If you can play forever, you can't really lose unless you stop.Truly hearing someone vs. just listening. It's not improv — it's a deeper presence where you catch the subtle nuance, the pause, the word choice, and steer the conversation toward what matters. The post-recording revelation. Some of the best moments happen after you stop recording. Staying the extra five minutes with a guest can yield the “cherry on the cake” that makes the whole episode come together.Podcast Program – Disclosure StatementBlue Infinitas Capital, LLC is a registered investment adviser and the opinions expressed by the Firm's employees and podcast guests on this show are their own and do not reflect the opinions of Blue Infinitas Capital, LLC. All statements and opinions expressed are based upon information considered reliable although it should not be relied upon as such. Blue Sky

LaTosha Brown has been described by many as a "force of nature," and from the first seconds of this Blue Sky episode, you will understand why.  Raised in Selma, Alabama she grew up surrounded by family members who were at the center of the civil rights movement in the United States.  Being close to grandparents who spent much of their adult lives unable to vote led her to appreciate this franchise and their example continues to inspire her "get out the vote" work today. LaTosha describes being raised by strong women and not experiencing overt sexism until she ran for office in Alabama, but instead of letting this get her down, she channeled these experiences into the creation of the Southern Black Girls & Women's Consortium. LaTosha Brown also happens to be a talented singer and performer, and she shares this gift with us here as well.    Chapters: 00:00 Introducing LaTosha Brown  This chapter introduces LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter and Southern Black Girls and Women's Consortium, highlighting her extensive background as a thought leader and activist. Host Bill Burke also shares his initial encounter with her and praises her infectious sense of hope and optimism.  02:24 Selma's Civil Rights Legacy  LaTosha discusses her upbringing in Selma, Alabama, and the profound impact of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, even before she understood its historical significance. She shares deeply personal stories of her mother's experience integrating high school and her aunt's participation in Bloody Sunday, emphasizing the lasting effects of these civil rights efforts on her family and her own development.  11:17 Grandparents, Voting & Justice  LaTosha recounts her grandparents' deep reverence for voting, stemming from their long struggle to gain the right to vote in Alabama. She also reflects on her lifelong fascination with power and justice, recalling childhood instances where she instinctively stood up against bullying, illustrating her innate desire to challenge the abuse of power.  21:05 Politics and Challenging Sexism  LaTosha discusses her decision not to pursue a political career despite running for office multiple times, explaining that her focus shifted to making a greater impact through organizing and infrastructure building.   30:09 Love, Power & Blackness as a Gift  LaTosha explains that Black Voters Matter is founded on Dr. Martin Luther King's philosophy of love implementing justice and power correcting injustice.   39:07 Southern Black Girls & Women's Consortium  LaTosha shares the inspiration behind the Southern Black Girls and Women's Consortium, an initiative to reverse underinvestment in Black women and girls in the South. She details the consortium's three core pillars: centering joy through activities like the 'Joy is Our Journey' bus tours, building an ecosystem of support organizations, and creating a new philanthropic model led by Black women and girls, including a partnership with Megan Thee Stallion to address mental health.  44:57 Sources of Optimism  LaTosha reveals the three main sources of her unwavering optimism: her faith in a higher power and the miraculous nature of life, the incredible capacity of human beings to create and imagine, and the historical resilience of her ancestors, which allows her to thrive today. She emphasizes that optimism is a choice of focus, deeply rooted in appreciating the wonders of the universe and human existence.
