Clare activist Martin Guilfoyle has returned home after a dramatic and contentious mission aboard the Global Sumud flotilla, which aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The 75-year-old, who was aboard the vessel that was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters, has described being confronted at gunpoint, detained, and subjected to what he calls intimidation and harsh treatment over several days. More than 170 activists were on board, with some reportedly requiring medical attention following the interception. While all Irish participants have now been released, concerns remain about others still in custody. Clarecastle Sinn Féin councillor Tommy Guilfoyle is speaking out after Israeli forces intercepted a flotilla of aid ships bound for Gaza in international waters off the coast of Crete. Around 175 activists have reportedly been detained—but there are growing concerns about the fate of one vessel, the Romantica, carrying Irish citizens, including Tommy's uncle, whose whereabouts are currently unknown. A New Zealander involved in the latest Gaza-bound flotilla attempt says four other Kiwi activists have been kidnapped by Israeli forces. About 19 ships were reportedly intercepted near Greece. MFAT says up to six New Zealanders were onboard - and Consular officials are trying to find out if any have been detained. Activist Samuel Leason, who remains with the flotilla, says there are still dozens of boats loaded with aid, so the mission will continue.
