Uisce Éireann ag iarraidh ar an bpobal a bheith tíosach. Irish Water is appealing to the public to conserve water from now on due to the hot weather. Tá Uisce Éireann ag achainí ar an bpobal uisce a chaomhnú as seo go ceann scaithimh mar gheall ar an aimsir the. The company says the heatwave is draining water supplies and is already causing drought in 31 watersheds in twelve counties. Deir an comhlacht go bhfuil soláthairtí uisce á ndísciú ag an teaspach agus go bhfuil sé ina thriomach cheana féin i 31 abhantrach in dhá chontae dhéag. The counties in question are Tipperary, Waterford, Offaly, Cork, Galway, Donegal, Meath, Kilkenny, Westmeath, Laois, Clare and Wexford. It is not an absolute drought and the water supply in those areas is "being managed", the company says. Ní dearbhthriomach atá ann agus tá an soláthar uisce sna háiteanna sin "á bhainistiú", a deir an comhlacht. However, Irish Water has declared conservation orders in three locations, namely, Mullingar in County Westmeath; Milford in County Donegal; and Kells- Oldcastle in County Meath. Mar sin féin, tá orduithe caomhnaithe fógartha ag Uisce Éireann i dtrí áit, mar atá, An Muileann gCearr i gCo na hIarmhí; Baile na nGallóglach i gCo Dhún na nGall; agus Ceanannas-An Seanchaisleán i gCo na Mí. In addition, the company says that it may still be a drought in other places as well, including Dublin. Ina cheann sin, deir an comhlacht go mb'fhéidir go mbeadh sé ina thriomach fós in áiteanna eile freisin, Baile Átha Cliath ina measc. Temperatures are expected to reach 28 degrees in parts of the country from now until at least Saturday, and people across the country are being urged to be water-efficient while the heatwave lasts. Merlyn Mind pilots AI assistant tool for teachers in 48 Irish schools

Almost 50 schools across Ireland have signed up to a new programme by US EdTech company Merlyn Mind and The Learnovate Centre to pilot a ground-breaking AI assistant tool for teachers. The programme is the largest trial of the Merlyn Origin AI assistant outside of North America. Supported by Learnovate, a learning technology research centre in Trinity College Dublin, the programme will see 300 teachers across 48 post-primary and primary schools utilise the Merlyn Origin AI technology in the classroom to provide students with a personalised, dynamic and interactive learning experience. The Merlyn Origin AI assistant tool been designed to support educators by streamlining the administrative and repetitive aspects of teaching. By leveraging generative AI, the system enables teachers to create lesson plans, generate grading rubrics and acquire instant feedback from their students with the push of a button. It also offers unique voice-controlled technology that allows teachers to operate classroom devices - from computers to front-of-class displays - entirely hands-free, freeing them up to focus on engaging directly with students. Phase one of the Irish pilot scheme during the academic year, just ended. Researchers will then incorporate feedback from teachers and learners into the technology ahead of phase two, beginning at the start of the 2025 academic year. It is hoped the success of the pilot will lead to a wider take-up of the technology in Irish classrooms. Merlyn Origin is actively used in more than 10,000 classrooms across the US where studies have found it to be effective at helping teachers reduce time spent on administrative tasks, leaving more time for teaching and learning, in as little as seven weeks. Research has also found that teachers using Merlyn experience reduced technostress - stress caused by technology tools and processes required in their work. Mullingar Community College in Co. Westmeath took part in a limited trial of the cutting-edge AI technology earlier this year. The success of that project has paved the way for the current pilot programme. Merlyn Mind has collected a series of industry honours in recent years, including Best AI Platform at the 2024 Global EdTech Awards and Best AI Solution at the 2024 Ed Tech Cool Tool Awards. The AI tool also won the Trendsetter category at the 2023 EdTech Awards, and the Back to School Primary and Secondary Education Awards at the Tech and Learning Awards of Excellence in 2023. Jason Mayland, Vice President of International Business Development at Merlyn Mind, says: "We're extremely excited to begin piloting our Merlyn Origin AI assistant in 48 schools across Ireland. This is the largest trial of our technology in classrooms outside North America where we've already seen Merlyn Origin produce fantastic results in terms of reducing technostress and time teachers spend on administrative tasks. "We're grateful to The Learnovate Centre, with whom we are a Patron Member, for its support on this project, which is a key milestone on our journey to bring Merlyn Mind to the European market." Learnovate Head of Membership Services Dave Farrelly says: "Learnovate is delighted to partner with Merlyn Mind on this pilot scheme for its AI assistant for teachers. AI has vast potential to revolutionise the classroom experience, which is why Learnovate is committed to supporting cutting-edge research in this area. It's important that we fully embrace this technology so that we maximise the benefits for teachers and learners."

A new analysis of the supply and demand of GPs has warned of capacity constraints in areas of growing population in Dublin and its commuter towns in Cavan, Meath, Kildare, Louth, Westmeath and Wicklow. The paper 'General Practice in Ireland: An analysis of Supply and Demand' was published and produced by the Government's Economic and Evaluation Service at the Department of Health. The study identified 3,262 clinically active GPs in service in 2022. It found that 13% of GPs work at least 48 hours a week. It said that the workforce of GPs and GP practice nurses provide a reasonable level of coverage nationally, but some geographic areas have clear capacity constraints, often in areas of growing and ageing population. The paper also says that GP retirements in some areas of Clare, Mayo, Wexford, and other areas, put services at risk where there is no viable replacement of GPs. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Dr Michael Kelleher, Lahinch-based GP and IMO GP Committee Member.

KINTO Join survey reveals 45% of Irish commuters stressed by their daily journey with many wishing they didn't have to drive

KINTO Join - a provider of sustainable mobility applications has revealed the findings of its survey which found that 45% of commuters in Ireland find their journey to work or university stressful. The research - conducted by Censuswide and involving 1,000 people who commute to work or university in the Republic of Ireland - found that more than half (51%) have considered changing their commute method. However, 48% have never tried a different mode of transport for their commute. Traffic delays and congestion were cited by 44% of commuters as one of their biggest frustrations. The other leading frustrations were fuel costs (30%), the time lost having to commute (30%), the weather (29%), and delays with services (15%). Driving by car is the most popular primary mode of transport (51%) among commuters. However, only 16% prefer to travel this way. If available, the bus was the most preferred means of commuting (25%), followed by the train (24%) and walking (23%). One in ten (10%) respondents said they would prefer a company or university shuttle. In urban areas, driving by car and getting the bus were tied for the top spot as the most popular primary mode of transport (at 32% respectively). In terms of generations, almost twice as many Generation X commuters drive by car (63%) than Generation Z commuters (32%). Of those who commute by car, 91% always or mostly do so alone. Their top reasons for travelling to work or university by car are that it is more time-efficient (48%), it is the only option (43%), and inadequate public transport accessibility (34%). The study found that the average daily commute time is around 1 hour and 10 minutes, whilst the average daily cost is €10. Train commuters have the most expensive journey to work or university (€13.14). At the other end of the scale, (excluding walkers) eBike commuters have the least expensive commute (€4.71). As for the average distance of a one-way commute, this is just shy of 17km, with those in Roscommon (30.56km), Wicklow (24.97km), and Westmeath (23.76km) travelling furthest. Meanwhile, respondents in Longford (6.13km), Waterford (9.58km), and Donegal (11km) have the shortest distances to travel. Patrizia Niehaus, CEO, KINTO Join Ltd, said: "It's ironic that while so many commuters in Ireland drive alone out of necessity, a significant number would actually prefer not to. They're frustrated - by traffic, rising fuel costs, and the stress of it all - but don't feel they have another choice. Of course, large-scale infrastructure upgrades are vital, but they take time. In the meantime, the congestion worsens, and emissions reduction targets slip further out of reach. That's why action at the micro-level is so critical. "A large share of short-distance travel happens for work and education. Employers and institutions are uniquely positioned to support more sustainable commuting through initiatives like shared transport schemes, carpooling platforms, or incentives for walking and cycling. When organisations take the lead, they not only support their own sustainability goals, but also drive behavioural change that benefits entire communities - cutting emissions, easing traffic, and giving people what they clearly want: the freedom not to drive alone." Hiring activity across key sectors in Ireland showed resilience in Q1 2025, with job postings at Matrix Recruitment rising 15.3% year-on-year, despite economic uncertainty. According to the latest Workforce Trends Report from Matrix Recruitment, employers demonstrated a cautious but steady approach to hiring in the first quarter of 2025, particularly in sectors with ongoing talent shortages, such as Manufacturing, Engineering, and Financial Services. "While economic uncertainty remains a concern, we are seeing strong demand for skilled professionals across multiple industries," said Breda Dooley, Head of Recruitment at Matrix Recruitment. "Manufacturing remains a key generator of jobs in Ireland, and we are seeing increased investment in ESG roles. The market is evolving, and job seekers with in-demand skills will continue to be at an advantage." Sector-Specific Trends The latest data from AIB's manufacturing PMI reported a modest upturn in manufacturing performance in the first quarter of the year on the back of increased production and new contracts. This was reflected in hiring trends with manufacturing accounting for over 25% of live job listings at Matrix Recruitment in Q1 2025. The number of manufacturing roles grew by 29% in Q1 2025 compared to the same time last year with Matrix Recruitment reporting that employers are actively recruiting for a wider range of technical and supervisory positions, with job titles like Production Manager, Maintenance Technician, Mechanical Design Engineer, and Production Team Leader driving the surge. Roles related to environment, sustainability, and green strategy rose YOY (5%), signalling that more employers in Ireland are recognising the importance of ESG as part of their overall business strategy and investing accordingly. Permanent vs. Temporary Roles Demand for permanent positions rose by 10.5% in Q1 2025, accounting for over 65% of all job listings at Matrix Recruitment. Meanwhile, temporary hiring surged by 16.7%, indicating a shift toward workforce flexibility.Speaking about this uptick in temp and contract roles, Breda Dooley said: "The growth in short-term project and cover roles is clearly a reflection of the economic uncertainty we are feeling at the minute. Many businesses are focused on staying agile and prioritising their short-term operational needs over future growth." Regional Hiring Hotspots The services sector saw a surge in hiring, particularly for administrative and clerical roles, with job postings increasing by 28.6% in counties such as Westmeath and Kildare. Waterford witnessed a notable rise in engineering and manufacturing roles, aligning with ongoing industry investment in the Southeast. Manufacturing jobs were also particularly strong in Roscommon, Cavan, and Westmeath. Trump Tariffs v Job Creation As Ireland continues to navigate the complexities of the global economic landscape, several key factors will influence hiring trends for the remainder of the year. Among these, global trade tensions remain a central concern. The Irish Government has warned that up to 80,000 future jobs could be at risk if the US proceeds with additional tariffs on the EU. Although the tariffs have now been confirmed, they are currently subject to a 90-day pause, providing a window for negotiation and potential resolution. This period of uncertainty means that while certain sectors, including automotive, machinery, electronics, minerals, and agriculture, may be more vulnerable to disruption, the full extent of the impact remains to be seen. Matrix Recruitment has noted a potential for sharper-than-expected slowdown in job growth, following the US administration's April 2nd announcement. However, with EU leaders hoping to engaging in dialogue with the US, there remains cautious optimism that an agreement could mitigate the worst-case scenarios. Focusing on SMEs, Breda warns: "Already under pressure from recent increases in sick pay and the minimum wage, SMEs are facing mounting ch...

Galway go in search of a first national ladies football title in 11 years when they clash with Cork in the LIDL National League Division 2 Final on Saturday (12th April 2025). The Tribeswomen have beaten the Rebelettes in their last two competitive meetings, including last year's All-Ireland semi-final, and their second game in this year's league (2-8 to 0-12) thanks to goals from Leanne Coen and Roisin Leonard. Both teams have already been promoted to Division 1, but a league title would be a welcome boost for Galway, which beat Westmeath in 2014, the last time they played for Division 2 honours. Leading up to the game, Galway manager Daniel Moynihan chatted to Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly on 'Over The Line.' == Throw-in at Croke Park on Saturday is 3pm and we'll have LIVE coverage with Darren Kelly and Katelyn Hayes on Galway Bay FM.

New research by Switcher.ie has revealed the best Irish counties for work-life balance. The study is based on data like access to local amenities like primary schools, major supermarkets and leisure centres, services like broadband and mobile speeds, proximity to green spaces and transport routes, plus house prices and crime rates. A new Code of Practice, launched in 2024, gives employees the right to request remote work carer's leave and other flexible arrangements. With 32% working from home at least one day a week during 2022, it looks like the move towards a better work-life balance is here to stay. Top 10 counties for work-life balance Galway claimed the top spot as the best county in Ireland for striking the perfect work-life balance. With surprisingly affordable house prices outside the city, it offers a winning mix of excellent local amenities and good connectivity for hybrid working, plus lush green spaces and a scenic coastline to boost well-being. Here's a snapshot of the top 10. For the full ranking and more top 5 winners, see Ireland's best counties for work-life balance. Most affordable Leitrim was the most affordable county to buy a house in our study. House prices were based on the median house price in October 2024 (Residential Property Price Index). Top 5 affordable counties to live & work: Leitrim, Longford, Donegal, Roscommon and Cavan For families Sligo has taken the top spot for the best county to balance work with a family. To calculate the best town to work with a family, we summed index scores for house prices, crime rate, number of GP surgeries and primary schools. Top 5 counties for families to live & work: Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Mayo and Donegal For hybrid working Dublin was the best place for hybrid working; the city counties of Cork and Galway also performed well. To calculate the best town for hybrid working, we summed index scores for average broadband and mobile speeds and distance to major roads and bus stops. Top 5 counties for hybrid working: Dublin, Cork, Laois, Galway and Kildare For health, fitness & well-being Tipperary came in tops for access to leisure facilities and green spaces, essential for achieving a good quality of life. To rank our towns, we summed the index scores for distance to leisure centres and outdoor sports facilities, the number of public parks, and access to national parks and coastlines. Top 5 counties for health & well-being: Tipperary, Monaghan, Carlow, Westmeath and Roscommon For shopping & eating Galway was the best place for your weekly shop, grab a bite to eat, or catch up over coffee. To find our top counties, we summed the index scores for the number of major supermarkets and cafes in the area. Top 5 towns to shop, eat and refresh: Galway, Cork, Kerry, Wicklow and Mayo Commercial Director of Switcher.ie, Eoin Clarke says: "The Work-Life Balance Act 2023 and its Code of Practice have ushered in a new era of working arrangements for many employees. This means that workers with families or caregiving responsibilities can now seek remote or flexible work options, providing a better quality of life and even financial benefits. Property price is often a crucial factor for house buyers, but broadband and mobile connectivity, easy access to local amenities, and proximity to green spaces can make all the difference when juggling work with family or other commitments. Switcher's research highlights several counties across Ireland that offer young professionals and working families a combination of affordability, an appealing way of life, and better-than-ever broadband and mobile connectivity for remote working. Our top performers spanned the country, with Galway and Sligo on the scenic west coast, Cork in the south, Roscommon and Westmeath in the heart of Ireland and Carlow and Dublin in the industrious east, to name just a few. So, if you're in the market for a new home, consider casting your net a little wider. While affordability and commute times are still e...
