Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 9, 2023 is: unctuous • UNK-chuh-wus • adjective Unctuous is a formal word used to describe someone who speaks and behaves in a way that is meant to seem friendly and polite but that is unpleasant because it is obviously not sincere. It can also mean “fatty,” “oily,” and “smooth and greasy in texture or appearance.” // Politicians are often at their most unctuous during election years, full of empty promises made solely to win over certain voters. // Braising chicken thighs with their skins on creates a rich, unctuous sauce that can be spooned back over the finished dish. See the entry > Examples: “The fate of a sycophant is never a happy one. At first, you think that fawning over the boss is a good way to move forward. But when you are dealing with a narcissist … you can never be unctuous enough.” — Maureen Dowd, The New York Times, 18 June 2022 Did you know? Nowadays, unctuous usually has a negative connotation, but it originated as a term describing a positive act: that of healing. The word comes from the Latin verb unguere (“to anoint”), a root that also gave rise to the words unguent (“a soothing or healing salve”) and ointment. The oily nature of ointments may have led to the use of unctuous to describe things marked by an artificial gloss of sentimentality. An unctuous individual may mean well, but the person's insincere effusiveness can leave an unwelcome residue—much like that of some ointments.

The mystery of Unction can be slippery to get our minds around. What does it do? Why don't we see miracles every time it's applied? Is sin related? Is unction different from other anointings? Fr. Stephen and Fr. Andrew look at the relationship between sin, healing, and oil.

Halfway through November we find Bob teamed up again with Tommy Todd on piano, Ralph Collier on drums, and Jud DeNaut anchoring on bass. Tommy's singular, adroit approach is evident throughout, right from the beginning “Sweet Georgia Brown” and on into “Brazil”, where Ralph plays both drums and maracas. Unctuous announcer Eddie brings in song star Margo Powers to sing “Everybody Loves Somebody”, with Tommy switching over to celeste. Bob and… Jud? Tommy? sing together opposite Margo in “I May Be Wrong” (previously Bob sang on his own in the debut episode). Margo is on her own in “Walkin' My Baby Back Home” (Nat Cole's iconic version was recorded later, in 1951). Tommy alternates on the celeste and piano for “When Dreams Come True”, giving Bob a great stage for his harmonic sensibilities. Engineer's note-the recording engineer for this broadcast ranks near the bottom for his cloth ears. Discerning listeners will wonder why Bob sounds so off-mic at the top, was Margo's mic really hot enough to hear her clearing her throat at the end of “Brazil”, is Bob using (and why are we hearing) a metronome for the last three tracks, why does Bob go off-and-on mic in “When Dreams Come True”. At least he got the NBC chime right! Sound gripes aside, this is fifteen minutes of bliss.

Today’s word of the day is unctuous. It’s spelled U-N-C-T-U-O-U-S. Unctuous is an adjective that means insincerely smooth. The Latin word for anoint, Unguere (oon GWAY ray) is where unctuous’s journey begins. But a better way to understand the word’s origin is to recall that things were often anointed with oily or greasy substances. As time went by, unctuous came to mean oily, and it later referred to people who behaved in a slick manner. Think of someone trying to win your favor with false flattery. The salesman had an unctuous quality to him that made him good at his job. I wound up buying five hundred acres of Florida swampland. The spelling of unctuous is U-N-C-T-U-O-U-S.
