Daniel Pemberton is an Academy Award-nominated English composer and songwriter. In 1994, at the age of 16, he recorded an album in his bedroom using a multitrack cassette recorder. It caught the attention of the music producer Pete Namlook, who released it on his label, leading to a flurry of soundtrack commissions. In the years that followed, my guest wrote music for TV shows including Peep Show, The Dark Crystal, Enola Holmes, and Slow Horses. But it's his feature film work for which he is best known. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading directors, composing for Ridley Scott's The Counselor, Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs, Guy Ritchie's The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Michael Mann's Ferrari, and Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7 –– for which he was nominated for an Oscar. He has also composed the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and several video games including LittleBigPlanet and Concord. In 2009, the Guardian's Paul Moody said of my guest: “few know his name but millions hear his music almost every day.” Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. In The Mysterious Case of the Victorian Female Detective (Yale UP, 2024), Sara Lodge tells stories of women who brought 19th century criminals to justice, in real life and popular culture, as unacknowledged crime-fighters and feminist icons.  On stage and in fiction, women detectives were sensational figures who fascinated the public with cross-dressing, fist-swinging heroines who captured thieves, flushed out cheats, and solved murders. Few people realize that these characters were based on real women who were active as detectives in private agencies and in the Victorian police force. Far from the mythology of an all-male world, women were a daily presence in police activity, although often underpaid and overlooked. They did important and dangerous work in a variety of roles both openly and as undercover agents.  While the fictional characters were heroic figures who always saved the day, these morally ambiguous real women were sometimes paid to betray, deceive, or entrap in the murky underworld of Victorian society.  Related resources: The interest in Victorian women detectives continues into the present with dozens of contemporary novels, film, and tv featuring Victorian female detectives.  Miss Scarlet on PBS is an original series by Rachael New. The Enola Holmes and Enola Holmes 2 films on Netflix are based on the original Enola Holmes books written by Nancy Springer. British screenwriter and playwright Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, Wonder, Enola Holmes, Crip Tales) has created adaptations of extraordinarily beloved characters and works. He.talks to Franklin Leonard and Kate Hagen about the art and responsibility of storytelling--from adapting Harry Potter and The Cursed Child for the stage, to his perspective on collaboration and authorship. Thorne thinks in terms of empowering key storytellers--aware of how much a face tells the story and how much actors need to be celebrated as authors. Thorne is also a big advocate for fuller disability narratives on screen. Trying to get the industry to take disability seriously remains very hard--a point he and Franklin explore from two different seats about a specific film.Questions? Comments? Criticism? It's a star-studded Netflix film from 2020 that also features Henry Cavill as older bro Sherlock and Helena Bonham Carter as the (disappearing) matriarch of the Holmes family. Sam Claflin plays the eldest bro of the family, Mycroft Holmes, who sucks a big fat one.   We love a Sherlock Holmes "who done it" whether it's Basil Rathbone from the 1940s, Benedict Cumberbacth from the 2000s, or Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock's sister Enola Holmes from the 2020s. But it was a Hartford-born actor who gave Sherlock Holmes his signature look - his curved pipe, deerstalker cap and magnifying glass.   William Gillette was born into a wealthy Hartford family in 1853 but became a millionaire in his own right as an actor and a playwright. He was the first actor to be universally acclaimed for portraying Sherlock Holmes, having staged the first authorized play in 1899. His retirement home, Gillette's Castle, cost millions to construct and is a combination escape room, medieval stone ruin and Steampunk fantasy.    Our guest is Paul Schiller. Paul spent almost a decade working at Gillette Castle. In addition to providing engaging and informative tours to castle visitors, he served as an archivist, researcher and educator for the park. During the Covid-19 Pandemic, Paul created a series of video tours of the castle, available on the Friends of Gillette Castle Youtube channel.    ----------------------------------------------------   Can you spare $10 a month to help support the new voices, research, and books featured on Grating the Nutmeg? She kicked off the Enola Holmes film series at Netflix wearing both hats, and now she stars in and executive produces her latest ambitious release for the streamer, Damsel.Brown headlines the film as Elodie, a young woman who agrees to marry a handsome prince (Nick Robinson) in hopes that his kingdom's riches will help her family's struggling people. However, nearly immediately after the two are wed, Elodie discovers the truth behind their union; his family is using her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. She joins Nuala to talk about why she wanted to write the novel and why it's so personal for her. In recent months there's been increasing momentum for what has been called Martha's rule which would give patients the power to get an automatic second medical opinion from other experts. This comes after the death of 13-year-old Martha Mills who died in hospital. An inquest concluded that her death had been preventable. So what difference could Martha's Rule make to how much say patients have to question the decisions made by doctors? Paediatrician and health campaigner Dr Guddi Singh wants to empower people so that medical care works in their best interests and joins Nuala. Three quarters of police officers and staff accused of violence against women are not suspended by their force. That's according to a joint investigation by the Independent newspaper and Refuge Charity. Nuala is joined by Ellie Butt, Head of Policy at Refuge. Mercury Prize Winning Musician Arlo Parks has turned her hand to poetry with her debut book, The Magic Border. It combines original poetry, song lyrics and images and she joins Nuala for an interview and live reading of one of the poems. Judy and Linda are finally back to catch up on some e-mails and give their First Impressions of "The Glory" (더 글로리), "Under the Queen's Umbrella" (슈룹), and "The Interest of Love" (사랑의 이해). The next episode will be about season 2 of "D.P." (Deserter Pursuit), starring Jung HaeIn, Koo KyoHwan, Son SeokKoo and Kim SungKyun. Sorry about audio issues with Judy's microphone!   Digressions:   2:43 - New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails! 33:40 - Judy recently played the "Resident Evil 4" remake, and had such a fun time fighting zombies and ineffectively flirting with hotties. You can check out VOD of her playthrough on Youtube. 37:04 - Linda has caught up on all seasons of "The Crown", and needs everyone to go to therapy. 39:28 - Linda also watched both "Enola Holmes" movies, and had a fun time. If only there was more of Henry Cavill! 40:53 - ***SPOILER ALERT*** Gasp! Linda is actually watching a K-drama? She started off liking "See You in My 19th Life" (이번 생도 잘 부탁해), but is not liking that the main characters have already gotten together.   46:01 - "The Interest of Love" (사랑의 이해) is a JTBC drama starring Yoo YeonSeok and Moon GaYoung, as bank staff who can't be together for some reason. I just typed that and immediately yawned.    54:46 - "Under the Queen's Umbrella" (슈룹) is a Netflix sageuk, starring Kim HyeSoo and Kim HaeSook. Judy was heartily annoyed by historical inaccuracies and Linda was simply bored.    59:53 - Finally, we talk about the revenge saga, "The Glory" (더 글로리) starring Song HyeKyo and Lim JiYeon. As bingeworthy as it was at the time of airing, the ending unfortunately left a bad taste in our mouths. If anyone at Netflix is paying attention, we don't need a second season of Song HyeKyo and Lee DoHyun getting revenge on the guy in jail, thanks. For an infinitely better revenge tale, read "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas (the unabridged version, Judy insists).   Some Korean terms:   아줌마: [ah-jum-ma] way to address an older woman. o: [ee-eung] In "The Glory", the character of Lim JiYeon's mother is named 홍영애. In Korean fortunetelling, both "ㅎ" and "ㅇ" count as the same letter, which made her the most dangerous to Lim JiYeon, according to the shaman. 선배: [seon-beh] person in an organization with more experience; opposite of "후배" [hoo-beh].   Audio credits: 2PM - "Heartbeat" Kota Suzuki - "Resident Evil 4" (2023) - "Baile de la Muerte" Hans Zimmer - "The Crown" - "Main Title"   Please send any questions, comments or suggestions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@kdramamyeyesout) or e-mail us (kdramamyeyesout(at)gmail.com).   You can become our patron at patreon.com/kdramamyeyesout for as little as $1 per month!   Please check out Judy's Twitch channel (twitch.tv/ladyjutea) or her Instagram (@ladyjutea) for non-Kdrama geeky content! Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 30, 2023 is: nemesis • NEM-uh-siss • noun A nemesis is a formidable foe—an opponent or enemy who is very difficult to defeat. As a proper noun, Nemesis refers to the Greek goddess of vengeance. // She will be playing against her old nemesis for the championship. See the entry > Examples: "2020's original Enola Holmes proved to be a surprisingly enjoyable twist on the world's most famous detective [Sherlock Holmes], focusing instead on his overlooked sister, Enola. No surprise, then, that this follow-up is just as exciting a romp through Victorian London. Despite proving her skills in the first film, Enola struggles to establish her own detective credentials until a missing-person report leads her to a case that's stumped even Sherlock, and sees her crossing paths with his arch nemesis, Moriarty." — Matt Kamen, WIRED, 10 Feb. 2023 Did you know? Nemesis was the Greek goddess of vengeance, a deity who doled out rewards for noble acts and punishment for evil ones. The Greeks believed that Nemesis didn't always punish an offender immediately but might wait generations to avenge a crime. In English, nemesis originally referred to someone who brought a just retribution, but nowadays people are more likely to see simple animosity rather than justice in the actions of a nemesis (consider the motivations of Batman's perennial foe the Joker, for example).
