"The exclusion from his clubs would mean ruin" [EMPT] Today we are joined by Seth Thévoz, creator of the popular Clubland Substack and author of London Clubland: A Companion for the Curious, among other books. Dr. Thévoz offers a fascinating look inside the traditionally secretive world of London's private clubs—institutions that have long relied on discretion and exclusivity for their survival. We explore the evolving nature of club life, contrasting the old model of member-owned institutions with today's for-profit members' clubs built around brand, networking, and lifestyle. Despite changes in how people work and socialize, Thévoz makes a compelling case that London clubland is not fading but thriving—adapting to modern needs while preserving its essential character. Our conversation also touches on the club life of Arthur Conan Doyle, whose memberships included the Athenaeum Club, the Reform Club, and the Authors' Club. We discuss the real-world inspirations behind the Diogenes Club—including Seth's identification of its most likely historical counterpart. Our "Learned Societies" segment kicks off with Sherlockian society activities coming up in the second half of September. Then, it's a new edition of "Examining the Pictures," with the film critic, journalist, and author Christian Monggaard, BSI, as he reviews Enola Holmes 3. Finally, the Canonical Couplet quiz will test your Sherlock Holmes knowledge, with a copy of something from the IHOSE vaults for the winner. James Cameron-Wilson says that #1 The Odyssey helped box office soar 86% despite hot weather and The World Cup. However, opinions are divided. Those who have seen it on IMAX (where it broke records) think it a masterpiece. Those who have viewed it on ordinary screens are less convinced. In his normal multiplex James found the music irritating, the dialogue sometimes unintelligible, the picture very dark and the many starry cameos distracting. Puzzled by a 15 certificate for such a mild and unbloody film, he often had no idea what was going on and believed none of it. He was far happier with Heartstopper Forever, the Netflix feature film based on its TV series which he really enjoyed and thought surprisingly touching. Not so Enola Holmes 3 with Milly Bobby Brown which, after two outings that he loved, feels like a mediocre TV episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
This week on VoTP DMV, Rome, Jab, and Shan break down one of the busiest weeks in entertainment, sports, and pop culture. In Hip-Hop, the crew dives into Rick Ross' new album Set In Stone, the internet's reaction to his Kendrick Lamar-inspired flow, and his latest comments on Drake. They also discuss new releases from Steve Lacy and Syd, DJ Khaled's delayed Aalam of God album, Tory Lanez's upcoming double album, and the latest legal headlines involving Desiigner, Travis Scott, and Lil Durk. Plus, they touch on 50 Cent's ongoing Shreveport drama and the growing crossover between music and the 2026 World Cup. In Sports, the conversation centers around one of the most chaotic NBA offseasons in recent memory. The hosts react to blockbuster moves involving Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown, Paul George, Ja Morant, LaMelo Ball, and Kawhi Leonard, while also breaking down LeBron James' uncertain future and what it could mean for the rest of the league. They also discuss the Wizards' acquisition of Deandre Ayton, Victor Wembanyama's long-term extension with San Antonio, and several key free agency moves reshaping championship contenders. Finally, in Hollywood, we review the massive box office debut of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, discuss the latest streaming industry shakeups involving Netflix and the WarnerMount deal, and highlight must-watch releases including Enola Holmes 3, the Hunger Games collection, and the new K-drama The East Palace. They wrap things up with a look at Universal's summer theme park attractions celebrating some of Hollywood's biggest franchises.

Original Release Date: Monday 20 July 2026 Description: In a truly confusing, but nevertheless hilarious, cold open, Phil offers a correction about “Malt Air”. Thanks to emails from loyal listener and frequent contributor Maurice Terenzio, Dean and Phil have a ball talking about three great actors of Hollywood's golden age: Joe E. Brown, George Raft and Edward G. Robinson. The big show biz news of the week get discussed: the possible halt to the Paramount-Warners merger and the historic box office success for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Two new movies get reviewed: The brilliant comedy Stop! That! Train! and the hit Netflix offering Enola Holmes 3. Of course Dean and Phil continue their ongoing film noir and neo-noir discussion, focusing on the nihilism of the 1970s as depicted in such modern classics as Arthur Penn's Night Moves and the Paul New man vehicle The Drowning Pool. Finally, colleague Marc Hershon (star of the “Chillpak Hollywood Presents …” podcast Television with Marc Hershon) drops in to help your friends in podcasting come up with ideas for how they can commemorate their upcoming 1,000 episode, and to discuss ideas for Phil's next movie, a documentary all about improv!
This week Andrew and Ted sit down to discuss the third installment of the Netflix Enola Holmes franchise ... "Enola Holmes 3", starring Millie Bobby Brown and co-starring Henry Cavill and Louis Partridge. This installment has Enola (Brown) getting married to the young Lord Tewkesbury on the island of Malta, the place young Tewkesbury lived when his father served during the British occupation. Beside Enola having reservations about her giving up her independence as a single, things really take a turn when Sherlock (Cavill) is kidnapped in relationship to a case he is working on. Enola to the rescue to not only find her brother but to do so she must crack the case that he was working on. Tune into find out what Andrew and Ted thought about "Enola Holmes 3".
"As I glanced round I was surprised at the universality of the man's interests" [3GAR] We discovered writer and blogger Dennis Simanaitis, a true "Sherlockian in the wild," whose path to the Great Game developed independently of any local groups. With a background spanning engineering, automotive journalism, and mathematics, Dennis brings a uniquely eclectic perspective to Sherlock Holmes. Like many of us, he suggests Dr. John H. Watson is the real chronicler of Holmes's adventures, with Arthur Conan Doyle serving as Watson's literary agent. We explore his admiration for classic Holmes adaptations, including the radio scripts of Edith Meiser and performances by actors such as Richard Gordon and John Stanley. The conversation ranges from Dennis's early experiences in 1950s Cleveland radio to the origins of his long-running blog. Along the way, we indulge in a bit of imaginative fun: what car might Holmes drive in a high-speed chase across the English countryside? Dennis makes a compelling case for a machine he has actually driven himself. It's a lively discussion that blends Sherlockian enthusiasm with a lifelong curiosity about technology, storytelling, and the enduring appeal of old-time radio. Our "Learned Societies" segment kicks off with Sherlockian society activities coming up in the first half of September. Then, it's a new edition of "Examining the Pictures," with the film critic, journalist, and author Christian Monggaard, BSI, as he reviews Enola Holmes 2. Finally, the Canonical Couplet quiz will test your Sherlock Holmes knowledge, with a copy of something from the IHOSE vaults for the winner. From a World Cup semi final update live at The Star to a bizarre plan to sell actual match grass, today's show had plenty going on. Bruce Isaacs dropped his streaming picks, including The Odyssey, Sheep Detectives and Enola Holmes, while a wild car thief story had everyone shaking their heads. Then things got surprisingly legal when a woman won millions in the lottery after her divorce, sparking a chat about who really gets the cash. Plus, FIFA has found yet another way to cash in, and yes, they're literally selling pieces of the pitch.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode, JD and Megan discuss the latest film from Netflix in ENOLA HOLMES 3! It's weird how the film came and went without any fanfare and barely any discourse. The tepid response to this film is interesting given how well received the first two were, but perhaps that's why Netflix kept it so quiet. Joe and Brenna move on to Enola Holmes, the first film in the franchise, which was meant to go theatrical but debuted on Netflix due to the pandemic.Starring Millie Bobby Brown (who's clearly proving she can do more than Stranger Things), the film is plenty of fun, even if it is a bit too long.Plus: good Sherlock and bad Mycroft; aging up a love interest; and Helena Bonham Carter in a beefed up role.Wanna connect with the show? The latest episode of The Interviews is another belter, folks. And is, accidentally, double act-themed. First, Chris Hewitt sits down on Zoom for a fun chat with Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directors of one of the year's biggest and best films, Project Hail Mary, as the Ryan Gosling-Rocky The Alien movie lands on Prime Video. It's not a spoiler chat, but they talk about some of the film's key sequences (so be mindful if you somehow haven't seen it), its immense success, and what they're doing next. [1:23 - 20:13 approx] Then, Harry Stainer sits down with another notable filmmaking duo, Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol, the director (Johnson), writers and stars (both) of bonkers new comedy Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie, to talk about their lo-fi five-star triumph and their favourite Spielberg movie. [21:18 - 41:57 approx] And finally, Chris Zooms it up a storm with Himesh Patel, who stars in Enola Holmes 3 as Dr. Watson, one-half of one of the greatest partnerships of them all. [42:52 - 57:07 approx] It's an episode so good that you might say, to quote another great double-act, 'uvavu'. Enjoy!

Then they discuss all three titles in the Netflix series, Enola Holmes. Is it a winning vehicle for star Millie Bobby Brown or is this a case best left unsolved? Max and Evan finish with reviewing Minions & Monsters, Jackass: Best and Last, and a look back at the Rambo movies.
Happy Fourth of July, and Happy 250th, if you're in the United States. We're here to keep you company if you're traveling, heading to the beach or just staying indoors and enjoying the AC because it's too damn hot outside. And if you're joining us from elsewhere in the world, we're delighted you're here. Here's what we reviewed on the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast: ENOLA HOLMES 3. It's not as fun as the first two "Enola Holmes" movies, but watching Millie Bobby Brown break the fourth wall and bust out her comic chops is always a joy. This time, the young detective is preparing to marry Tewkesbury on the island of Malta, but a kidnapping derails her plans. Henry Cavill, Louis Partridge and Helena Bonham Carter co-star. Streaming on Netflix. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! So much to talk about as always, including Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding, the "Backrooms" extended edition, the "Werwulf" trailer, Jon Erwin's use of AI in "Young Washington," Mel Brooks' 100th birthday and more. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific. Have a blast and stay safe this holiday weekend! Thanks for sharing some of it with us. The latest episode of the Empire Podcast sees the team — Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, Alex Godfrey, and James Dyer — go simply ga-ga for Olivia Wilde's new film, The Invite. In fact, Wilde is this week's guest, along with her co-star, Edward Norton, who have a lovely natter with Mr. Godfrey. Either side of that, the team talk about movies in which people bounce back after being made redundant, discuss the week's movie news, including the new trailer for Robert Eggers' Werwulf, and review not just The Invite, but Nirvanna: The Band The Show The Movie, Minions & Monsters, and Enola Holmes 3. Oh, and there's quite a bit of humming and whistling, but it'll make sense. Probably. Enjoy.
It's Fourth of July weekend, it's a hundred degrees outside, and Paul Asay from Plugged In joins Brian From with a perfect excuse to sit in air-conditioned darkness for two hours. First up: Minions and Monsters, the latest entry in the franchise that somehow keeps going — fun and frenetic as always, but parents should know there are some darker spiritual elements from a spell book and at least one real swear word that feels out of place. Then a genuine recommendation for the holiday weekend: Young Washington, a historically grounded action film about George Washington before the wigs and the dentures, back when he was just a Virginian colonial trying to make his name in the French and Indian War. Paul — who reads presidential biographies for fun — calls out the liberties it takes while vouching for its historical core, and notes a welcome faith element alongside the battle sequences. For streaming at home: Enola Holmes 3 on Netflix brings Sherlock's younger sister to the altar while Moriarty tries to ruin the wedding. And in a delightful bonus, Brian puts Paul on the spot about what he's actually watching — the answer involves Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, and a 1952 western that Paul still hasn't forgiven for its famously annoying kid. It's one of those weeks over at Spoilerpiece when one of us is pretty neutral about a movie, and the other is pretty irritated (by the movie; not, like, by life). Such is the quandary of ENOLA HOLMES 3. The Millie Bobby Brown-starring series about Sherlock Holmes younger sister is the kind of thing that makes Evan bristle, and makes Dave pretty - what's the word...noncommital? One thing both Evan and Dave agree on: This movie has a lot of plot for a picture that's pretty short but feels pretty long ("More endings than RETURN OF THE KING," says Evan). eek! Not high praise. Over on Patreon, we watch FIRST BLOOD and RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II.

Wow, it's July! We have a quick little episode to kick off the month and the second half of the year. Here's what we reviewed on the latest Breakfast All Day podcast: MINIONS & MONSTERS. The third Minion movie and the seventh film in the "Despicable Me" franchise is surprisingly hilarious, as those tiny, yellow chaos agents storm Hollywood and invent cinema as we know it. Lots of classic movie references for the adults in the audience and madcap hilarity for everyone, regardless of age. Allison Janney, Trey Parker, Christoph Waltz and Jesse Eisenberg are among the voice cast. In theaters everywhere now. YOUNG WASHINGTON. That's the point of this Angel Studios take on the founding father, set in 1755 Virginia. Starring William Franklyn-Miller, Kelsey Grammer, Ben Kingsley and Mary-Louise Parker. Coming soon to a middle school social studies classroom near you, but playing in theaters starting July 3. We'll be back on Friday with a review of "Enola Holmes 3," plus movie news. "in league with the thief" [REIG] Arvind Ethan David is a versatile writer and producer whose career spans theater, television, film, graphic novels, audio, and now his debut novel, The Great Game, a historical thriller set in 1905 London. Blending mystery and suspense, the book marks the return of A. J. Raffles — the famous gentleman thief created by Conan Doyle's brother-in-law, E.W. Hornung. Born in Malaysia and educated in England, Arvind's perspective on imperial rivalry, colonialism, and cultural identity is expressed through the eyes of his narrator Balvinder dev Singh, a law student and military veteran who is funding his education in partnership with Raffles. When a brutal Mayfair murder tangles Bunny and Raffles in a widening conspiracy, it attracts the attention of Holmes, Watson, and even Winston Churchill. Arvind's career began when he was still a student, adapting Douglas Adams's novel Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency as a play. When Adams came to see it, he became a mentor. He has written and produced extensively in television, including Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency for Netflix, Anansi Boys for Amazon, and The Garden of Evening Mists for HBO. He has also written seven graphic novels, including an adaptation of Raymond Chandler's Trouble Is My Business. Join us as he reflects on his experiences in these different artistic worlds, and on the unique challenges of bringing honored characters to life. Our "Learned Societies" segment kicks off with Sherlockian society activities coming up in the latter half of August. Then, it's a new edition of "Examining the Pictures," with the film critic, journalist, and author Christian Monggaard, BSI, as he reviews the first Enola Holmes film. Finally, the Canonical Couplet quiz will test your Sherlock Holmes knowledge, with a copy of The Great Game for the winner.
