Michael Bierut on the Enduring Power of Simplicity

Time Sensitive Podcast

Across his four-decade-long career in graphic design, Michael Bierut has amassed an impressively robust tally of bold-faced clients. From The New York Times, Saks Fifth Avenue, and the Robin Hood Foundation to Mastercard, the New York Jets, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Bierut and his team at the multidisciplinary design firm Pentagram—which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with a two-volume book from the publisher Unit Editions, and where he has been a partner since 1990—have crafted some of the most unforgettable, standout identities and graphics around. Perhaps most notable in recent years, Bierut devised the unequivocal “H” logo used throughout Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. Consistently fueled by the sheer delight he finds in design, Bierut is also a co-founder of the website Design Observer, launched in 2003 and among the first online platforms dedicated entirely to design. With everything he creates, Bierut whittles each of his concepts down to its most essential core, ultimately arriving at something that feels both rigorously thought through and inevitable in its simplicity. On this episode of Time Sensitive, Bierut talks with Andrew about the integral practice of keeping notebooks throughout his life; the deep groundedness of his nearly lifelong relationship with his wife and high-school sweetheart, Dorothy Kresz; and why the “why” of design is far more important to him than the “how.”Special thanks to our Season 6 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Michael Bierut01:13:57 Pentagram00:23:28 Design Observer01:23:40 Mastercard logo01:30:44 The Library Initiative01:39:26 How To01:39:59 Pentagram: Living by Design

It's a 'Dave' solo episode, something we rarely do. In this week's show Dave recommends some things to do during this time where we have to stay in and stay safe. But at the same time we can use this opportunity to improve ourselves and the things we are connected too. There's recommendations of tv shows, books, podcasts, DVDs, online learning and more. Let's support each other, share information and experiences. We always give the excuse that we don't have the time - well, now we do and there's no excuse to improve our skillset! The Links - big list!TV AND FILMSABSTRACT - Netflix https://www.netflix.com/title/80057883KODACHROME FILM https://www.netflix.com/watch/80216834HONDROS - https://www.netflix.com/watch/80190924DISNEY PLUS IMAGINEERING - https://www.disneyplus.com/en-gb/series/the-imagineering-story/6ryoXv1e1rWWDISNEY ONE DAY - GARY HUSTWIT FREE MOVIES - https://www.ohyouprettythings.com/freeTHE GENIUS OF DESIGN DVD - https://amzn.to/2Xf4BUuJUST LIKE BEING THERE DVD (US) - https://www.amazon.com/Being-There-Virgil-Entertainment-Shannon/dp/B01GWCCWD2THE MAN BEHIND THE POSTER DVD - https://amzn.to/2JEFPVA 24 X 36 MOVIE ABOUT MOVIE POSTERS - https://amzn.to/2Xd6ctDFINDIN VIVIAN MAIER - https://amzn.to/2JKk4DKTRAININGKELBYONE - https://kelbyone.com PHOTOSHOP TRAINING CHANNEL - https://photoshoptrainingchannel.comDAVE CROSS WORKSHOPS - https://online.davecrossworkshops.comMATT KLOSKOWSKI - https://mattk.comRC CONCEPCION ADOBE BOOK - https://amzn.to/2RiBzzsRC CONCEPCION ROCKY NOOK - https://rockynook.com/author-info/rafael-concepcion-10165/SKILLSHARE AARON DRAPLIN DESIGN CLASSES - https://www.skillshare.com/profile/Aaron-Draplin/6666857BOOKSETHERINGTON BROTHERS DRAWING - http://theetheringtonbrothers.blogspot.comHOUSE INDUSTRIES LETTERING MANUAL - https://amzn.to/2XcqrrBSOVIET SPACE GRAPHICS - https://amzn.to/3bXG0Y2HOW DO I DO THAT IN INDESIGN - (UK) https://amzn.to/2XcqxPZ (US) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1681984849/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_QVWIEbTNCSC6TPHOTOSHOP TOOLBOX - https://amzn.to/2UYWrMUMAKE STUFFAWESOME MERCHANDISE - https://www.awesomemerchandise.comSTICKERMULE - https://www.stickermule.comBLURB - https://www.blurb.co.ukEVENTSDAVE CROSS 2020 ONLINE PHOTOSHOP SUMMIT APRIL 13-17 - https://davecross.kartra.com/page/yMT18CANCELEDCON - http://hoch.co/canceledcon/SOCIAL MEDIAhttps://www.linkedin.com/feed/ADOBE STOCK - https://stock.adobe.comPODCASTSTHE OFFICE LADIES - https://officeladies.comPERSPECTIVE PODCAST - https://www.perspective-collective.com/perspectivepodcast/TALKING SHOT - http://www.talkingshot.co.uk/podcast-library/PERCEPTIVE PODCAST - https://www.danieljgregory.com/perceptivephotographerpodcast/MOOSE PETERSON - https://www.moosepeterson.com/blog/mooses-podcasts/UNIT EDITIONS = https://www.uniteditions.com/pages/podcastsMARK HIRONS CREATIVE WAFFLE - http://hironscreative.com/podcastCREATIVE PROCESSING - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/creative-processing-with-joseph-gordon-levitt/id1472587591SOFTWAREProcreate - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/creative-processing-with-joseph-gordon-levitt/id1472587591PHOTOSHOP FOR IPAD - https://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/ipad.htmlIAN BARNARD - http://www.ianbarnard.netIAN BARNARD SKILLSHARE - https://www.skillshare.com/site/join?teacherRef=2696643&via=teacher-referral&utm_campaign=teacher-referral&utm_source=ShortUrl&utm_medium=teacher-referral&t=Level-Up-Your-Script-Lettering&sku=220062622

The word 'legend' is tossed around far too lightly. In the world of visual communication, I have no problem attaching that word to the name of British graphic designer, writer, educator, publisher and creative innovator Adrian Shaughnessy. Adrian co-founded Intro, a design studio, in the late 1980s, steering the company to 40 members of staff and pioneering work in digital media and motion graphics. He is now the senior tutor of visual communication at the Royal College of Art. Adrian's book, How To Be A Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul has sold over 80,000 copies worldwide and following this, he became a founding partner of Unit Editions, a publishing company producing books on design and visual communication. Taking us through his outstanding career, discussing the vastly changed design landscape we now exist in and the challenges we face, Adrian details the brilliant story behind their iconic work with the band Primal Scream and the XTRMNTR album art-direction, his work with British graphic design veteran Ken Garland and his disdain of corporate culture. An hour with a man of Adrian Shaughnessy's stature and industry respect is rare, so this is a must listen episode for anyone with even the most tenuous connection to the arts.
