With a little help from filmmaker Ben Wheatley, our 2000 AD obsession kicks into high gear this week. The filmmaker behind such brutally banger movies as Kill List, A Field in England, High-Rise, and this year's Bob Odenkirk actioner, Normal, joins the podcast to discuss his eight-chaptered 2000 AD comic, Judge Dee, which recently wrapped in Prog 2487. Even better, Judge Dee is a sequel to an iconic Judge Dredd story from forty-two years ago, The Haunting of Sector House 9, which encouraged us to dig deep in the franchise's history. It's only fitting that Wheatley layers his 2000 AD tale with a classic, 80s-era cinematic sub-genre, the buddy-cop adventure. It's a little Lethal Weapon, but maybe even more Heart Condition, for those that can recall that complicated (ie problematic) Denzel Washington/Bob Hoskins ghost cop comedy. Ya see, PSI Judge Dee carries a secret. Wherever she travels, she's got a demonic passenger with her, Klato. However, this is not a case of a filmmaker making their way to comics for a little fun. Wheatley is a lifelong Prog reader. It's been his dream to finally scrounge around Mega-City One and add a little lore to this massive universe. Given the opportunity, he knew he wanted to springboard from The Haunting of Sector House 9, pick up where that horror left off, only decades later, and deliver his unique, grotesque, and funky perspective. This week, we're talking Judge Dredd, binary thinking, buddy cops, and surviving the dystopian present with Ben Wheatley. Judge Dee is written by Wheatley, illustrated by Simon Coleby, colored by Jack Davies, and lettered by Simon Bowland. Judge Dee chapters one through five can be found in Progs 2467 - 2471, and Judge Dee chapters six through eight can be found in Progs 2485 - 2487. You can find them all on 2000AD's website. You can follow Ben Wheatley on Instagram. This Week's Sponsors The Future is Calling! 2000 AD is the Galaxy's Greatest Comic, with new issues published every single week! It's Die Hard in a dystopia! For our penultimate episode, this week we're hopping on our lawmasters and cruising into Mega City One, as we discuss the 2012 version of DREDD aka DREDD 3-D!In the futuristic crime-ridden dystopia of Mega City One, roving patrols of ‘Judges' are permitted to dispense on-the-spot justice with the power of judge, jury and executioner. In this context, the hard-bitten, highly experienced Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is reluctantly partnered with rookie candidate Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), who has psychic abilities due to a genetic mutation. In the process of investigating a triple homicide in the towering high-rise building known as Peach Trees, the two Judges incur the wrath of the culprit – ferocious and powerful local gangster MaMa (Lena Headey) – who seals off the building and declares war on the pair of them, meaning that the two vastly outnumbered Judges must use all their skills and guile to survive an onslaught of attacks from the building's seemingly infinite number of marauding criminals. The boys put this awesome movie in its full context by discussing the entire history of the Dredd character and it's life across popular culture (including the 1995 Stallone movie version). They go deep on this icon figure's complex appeal, and what this adaptation got so right, and what the distributors got so wrong (remember the 3-D craze?! Ah…good times) in translating this challenging source material to the silver screen at the second attempt. The guys hand out awards in a hotly contested edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars' and wrap things up with a challenging edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' Trivia Quiz. But will Liam pass or fail?! TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqqgrUna28wAt the time of release, DREDD is streaming on Tubi and Vix and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV/iTunes, YouTube, Fandango and all the usual platforms! In 1980, an option was taken out on Judge Dredd with a view of getting a movie of Mega City One's legendary law enforcer to the big screen. In the years that followed, it looked like Tony Scott might direct a film based on 2000AD comics' most famous character, with Arnold Schwarzenegger sniffing around. In the end, 1995 saw a seasoned movie star in Sylvester Stallone and a twentysomething British film director called Danny Cannon realising the film. Turned out to be quite a story... Jim and Justin are know-it-all comics guys normally, but in this episode they'll enter unfamiliar territory for them: the 22nd century milieu of brutal supercop Judge Dredd…as well as the longrunning weekly comic 2000 AD and the British comics industry in general! The epic “Necropolis” storyline might seem like an unusual entry point to Dredd: genres clash as the sci-fi dystopia of Mega-City One is attacked by the supernatural horrors of the Dark Judges, and the title character doesn't even appear for much of the story; Dredd has exiled himself to the wastelands of the Cursed Earth, leaving a younger, less experienced genetic duplicate to carry his name and badge. Will our intrepid podcasting Yankees be hopelessly befuddled by this arc's British sensibilities and satire, or will the thrillpower writing of John Wagner and the gritty inks and paints of artist Carlos Ezquerra cross the cultural divide?Discussed in this episode: Judge Dredd strips from 2000 AD progs 674-699(Do not adjust the rabbit ears on your podcatcher app; sound quality in this episode is suboptimal due to a recording issue. Read transcriptLock and load your law enforcement credentials, plug in your justice-dispensing visor, and prepare for some megacity-sized mayhem as Play Comics dives into the brutal, unforgiving world of Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death—the PSX, Xbox, and GameCube shooter that proved you could make a genuinely compelling Judge Dredd game if you weren't afraid to lean into the dystopian carnage and stylized ultraviolence that makes Mega-City One such a joy to read about. Released when Judge Dredd was already a 2000 AD institution spanning decades of comic book brutality, this game took the Dredd vs Death story arc and transformed it into a first-person adrenaline rush where the law doesn't negotiate—it just executes. This week, we're absolutely thrilled to welcome the phenomenally knowledgeable Chloe Maveal from the official 2000 AD podcast In Orbit Every Wednesday, where she and her co-host Molch-R break down the Galaxy's Greatest Comic with the kind of passion and insight that would make even Judge Dredd stop and listen (okay, maybe not, but he'd at least acknowledge it happened). Chloe is also the publisher behind the critically acclaimed TRASH HUMPER zine, where she explores everything from comics criticism to culture with a sharp, witty eye. When she's not busy being the voice of sophisticated 2000 AD fandom, she's creating comics-focused content that makes you think twice about what you're reading. Together, we'll investigate whether this brutal pixel-based interpretation of Judge Dredd's most gothic storyline managed to capture what makes the Judge such an iconic character—a faceless instrument of a broken justice system who's somehow still the hero we deserve, even if we don't deserve him. Does the gameplay hold up after all these years, or does it feel like it belongs in the Iso-Cube? How faithful does it stay to the source material, and does that even matter when you're blasting away at demonic horrors and mutant abominations in a mega-city dystopia? And perhaps most importantly: in a game where you're literally fighting the undead, where does Judge Dredd rank among other video game adaptations of 2000 AD's most iconic characters? Grab your daystick, practice your best “I am the law” growl, and join us for an episode that's guaranteed to be bloodier than a Justice Department discipline report. Learn such things as: Should Judge Dredd games take themselves as seriously as Judge Dredd takes the law? Does the choice of console actually impact how you experience a multi-platform release? What did Anthrax ever do to Chloe? And so much more! You can find Chloe on the official 2000 AD podcast In Orbit Every Wednesday, checking out the TRASH HUMPER zine, or on BlueSky @cuntersthompson. Let's go!Superman Spoiler ReviewSpoiler alert! Wij delen onze ongezouten mening.Thunderbolts / The New Avengers ReviewWe hebben eindelijk Marvel's Thunderbolts gezien. Taika Waititi is officially directing a new Judge Dredd movie, with Drew Pearce (The Fall Guy, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) writing the script. Both are longtime fans of the Dredd comics and are promising a return to the dark satire and heavy worldbuilding of the original 2000 AD stories. In this video, I break down everything we know about the project, including the team's goal to distance it from the 1995 and 2012 versions, their hopes for a Dredd universe, and whether Taika's style can actually work for something this gritty. I also share my own thoughts—because let's be honest, the Stallone and Urban movies still have their charm.Drop your thoughts in the comments: Are you excited for this version? Or worried it'll be too goofy for Mega-City One?

Reading Judge Dredd in 2025 is a helluva thing. The gap between Anycity USA and Mega-City One shortens seemingly with every passing second, causing us to re-evaluate dystopia's purpose. A Better World, the latest 2000 AD collection from writers Rob Williams and Arthur Wyatt, featuring gorgeously gnarly art from Henry Flint, Boo Cook, Jake Lynch, and Jim Boswell, is a vicious mirror to gaze into. And anxiety rests in what to do after you pull your head away. The story begins with Judge Maitland discovering the impossible amongst her accounts. If the Chief Justices would allow her to reallocate a few resources, say feed money into education and a few other social services, crime in Mega-City One would likely plummet. They give her a sector to manage, and her theory becomes reality. Oh, no. Judge Dredd: A Better World knocked us flat when we first read it last year. We, and a lot of other comic lovers, ranked it as one of 2024's best stories. Now that it's properly collected, we were eager to get Rob Williams and Arthur Wyatt on the podcast to break it down and challenge our understanding of Mega-City One's top cop and the people he polices. We discuss how and why they brought Judge Maitland to her findings, how she relates heavily to Dredd, and why he responds so warmly to her. Or as warmly as Dredd possibly can. Our conversation dips into the joys of dystopia as well as the danger that can occur when folks give it a light reading. The trick being to make light readings impossible. We're reviewing movies from the 90s, of course we're going to do a bad comic-book adaptation! This week, we're off to Mega-City One to review Judge Dredd from 1995. Freud explica. O RdMCast é produzido e apresentado por: Thiago Natário, Gabi Larocca e Gabriel Braga. Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will be breaking down the cult classic cyberpunk film DREDD (2012) - directed by Pete Travis, written by Alex Garland, based on the "Judge Dredd" comic by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, and starring Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey. In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO. This is one of my favorite cyberpunk films of the 21st century as it delves into so many thematic signatures of the sub-genre that it made me smile from ear to fucking ear. It is a criminally overlooked film that has become a cult classic over recent years and deserves to be known by the masses. Join me as I venture deep into Mega City One – where 800 million people live in the ruin of the old world. It's judgment time, baby! So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. You know what time it is! Cyberpunk Cinema starts…now!Anthony's IG - https://www.instagram.com/stormgiantproductionsCyberpunk Cinema IG - https://www.instagram.com/cyberpunk.cinemaSignal Fragment SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/signalfragment
We made it to a new year! Is this the year you were hoping for? Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is all about justice. It's his job! He's now tasked with the assessment of a potential new judge, Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) – and she's a psychic. A routine patrol goes bonkers quickly when Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her gang don't like what these judges are up to. Mr. Dredd isn't about that hot garbage, and Anderson is all about nawwww. Time to shoot your way out of this future noise. If you're a baddy, a bullet or a psychic blast might be headed your way. RTS check out all the local haunts in Mega-City One. What kind of ice-cream do you think we can get? Are we eating it on Slo-Mo? Jeremy, Collin and La-Mar buff their cybernetic implants and barricade amongst the unstoppable gangs. You don't need a clairvoyant to tell you that this film is pure fire. We are telling you! The judge has been judged – awesomely!

This week we are welcoming back friend of the Podcast Joe Higgens from Hallmark of Greatness, Yeah you knew we were going to say that! We're using his library of knowledge on 2000 AD as well as talking long walks and Sticking plastic things to existing guns to make them look futuristic. --- Hallmark of Greatsness is a comedy podcast about the greatest stories of our age, Hallmark and made for TV movies. Listen here --- Judge Dredd is a 1995 American superhero film[5][6][7][8] based on the 2000 AD comics character of the same name. It is directed by Danny Cannon and stars Sylvester Stallone in the title role, a law enforcement officer in the crime-ridden futuristic metropolis of Mega-City One. The film co-stars Armand Assante, Diane Lane, Rob Schneider, Joan Chen, Jürgen Prochnow, and Max von Sydow. It was filmed entirely at Shepperton Studios in the United Kingdom, and released by Buena Vista Pictures on June 30, 1995. The film takes place in the year 2080 and depicts a dystopian world. Following an unspecified disaster that turned Earth into a "cursed" wasteland, the survivors established a corps of Judges whose role combines that of police, judge, jury and executioner. In Judge Dredd, Dredd, one of the most dedicated Street Judges, has been framed for murder by his own half-brother — the psychotic Rico, who plots to take over Mega-City One with an army of superhuman clones. The film was produced by Charles Lippincott and Beau E. L. Marks, with a screenplay by William Wisher Jr. and Steven E. de Souza. Reviewers criticized the film for its script and perceived lack of originality and faith to its source material, along with Stallone's acting. The film is often considered to be one of Stallone's worst films,[9][10] but its visual style, effects, music score, stunts and action sequences were praised, and the film was nominated for four Saturn Awards. A reboot film, entitled Dredd, was released in 2012.

Zach & Zo visit the big city; in fact, it's a very, very big city. It's not just big it's mega! In fact, it's Mega City One. The pair has to be careful because crime is rampant; it's so bad that the city had to create an entirely new justice system. It's a system where the judges don't sit in courtrooms; they roam the streets. They hear cases at the scene of the crime and they administer instant an instant verdict.
