Ukraine and the US have signed a much-anticipated natural resources deal, after months of tense negotiations. The deal - which says the US will share profits from future sales of Ukraine's mineral and energy reserves - aims to incentivise Washington to invest further in Ukraine's defence and reconstruction. Also in the programme: Syrian officials say they have regained control of a Damascus suburb which had seen a surge in fighting between a Druze militia and government troops; and we look at the children's book The Gruffalo. Are you excited about the first new book in more than 20 years?(Photo: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko sign the deal. On this episode of Parentalité we talk about the French way of reading and storytelling with children. First, Meg Gerner chats with Oliver Gee and Lina Nordin Gee, the parent duo responsible for the popular podcast The Earful Tower, about their series of children's books which all feature precocious animal characters who galavant around Paris. Lena talks about being a creative mom with a toddler and a newborn and Oliver gives us insight into their reading habits with three languages in the household. Later in the Episode Joelle Benoliel and Rachelle Chapman talk about reading culture with kids in France from the huge influence of Bond Dessiners (graphic novels or comic style books) to the prevalence of libraries in the lives of French children. We talk about our favorite books growing up, and the favorite books of our children growing up in France. The lads kick things off with the great Nepo Baby debate—where does nepotism actually end, and is being the niece of Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson enough to count? This, naturally, leads to an important clarification: Pete is not related to Mr. Beast or any other famous Donaldsons. But today's real highlight? We're on holiday this week! Wait, I am being told, we are in fact not on holiday. The show must go on! (Although a bit shorter than normal. Sorry and you're welcome!) Happy hump day EIC heads! As a reward for making it halfway to the weekend here's a brand spanking episode of Everything In Conversation for you- and it's a doozy. This week we're discussing a new branch of the nepo baby discourse that sprouted after 24-year-old singer and Messy internet sensation Lola Young was “outed” as being the niece of mega-successful children's author Julia Donaldson (e.g. the creator of The Gruffalo). This revelation sparked conversations online about whether this connection was enough to open doors, if we even should be labelling Young a nepo baby, and what having a rich or high profile relative can mean when navigating a career in the arts. Armed with a pile of brilliant listener messages we try to find some answers, as well as getting stuck into the complications of the UK class system, code-switching, the sexism inherent in the term nepo baby and what we think we should all actually be talking about instead. Thanks so much for listening and/or taking part in this In Conversation episode. If you want to be a part of next week's discussion just follow us on IG @everythingiscontentpod. It's a squash and a squeeze as John, Alex and London French snuggle up on the terraces of Menton's cosy stade and watch the home side play with all the fervour of the Smeds and the Smoos. Alas, Menton could have done with a Gruffalo, or a wise old man, or at least the The Ugly Five, for a lively Mandelieu were just that little bit too Everywhere Bear, finding Room on the Broom running the channels and deservedly emerging as 4-2 winners. Listen out for a goalkeeper who's a fly-half, a decent contest and multiple eulogies to Fox's Socks Julia Donaldson. Menton 2 Mandelieu 4 was recorded on Sunday 12 January 2025 with guest appearances by Eleri and Lyla. Stick Man declined to contribute.
In this episode of the Helping Families Be Happy podcast, produced by Familius Publishing, host Christopher Robbins talks with Antonia Squire, a veteran children's bookseller and children's buyer at The King's English Bookshop. Antonia shares expert tips on building a children's library, starting from baby showers to chapter books for older kids. The discussion highlights the importance of reading aloud to children at every stage of development, the role of books in building empathy and curiosity, and specific recommendations for timeless and engaging titles. Whether you're looking to create a starter library or expand an existing collection, this episode offers practical advice to foster a lifelong love of reading in your children. Episode Highlights [02:15] Start Early—Baby Books as Gifts: Antonia suggests building a library as early as baby showers, encouraging parents to replace cards with books inscribed with personal messages. [06:40] The Importance of Reading Aloud at Any Age: Reading aloud fosters connection, emotional bonding, and early literacy skills. Antonia emphasizes that children are never too young—or too old—to enjoy storytime. [10:30] Interactive Books for Toddlers: Recommendations like Tails and Pout-Pout Fish highlight the value of tactile and rhythmic books for engaging young readers. [15:20] Picture Books for Growth and Humor: Titles such as I Eat Poop and The Gruffalo teach humor, resilience, and irony, making them perfect for ages 3 and up. [20:50] Chapter Books That Build Reading Confidence: Antonia highlights Ramona the Pest and Charlotte's Web as must-reads for early readers, blending timeless storytelling with life lessons. [26:30] Building Empathy Through Fiction: Books help children experience life through different perspectives, improving emotional intelligence and decision-making. [30:10] Creating Access with Nonprofits Like Brain Food Books: Antonia introduces Brain Food Books, a nonprofit focused on providing books to children without easy access, and explains how just 10 books in a home can improve a child's success. Key Takeaways Start Early with Books: Build your child's library starting at baby showers to set the foundation for early literacy and bonding. Read Aloud at Every Stage: Continue reading aloud as children grow to keep them engaged and foster imagination and comprehension. Choose Interactive and Fun Books: Books with humor, rhyme, and touch-and-feel elements captivate young readers and keep them coming back. Include Chapter Books for Growth: Introduce longer stories like Ramona the Pest and Charlotte's Web to deepen literacy and emotional connections. Focus on Empathy and Imagination: Fiction helps children understand different perspectives and make thoughtful decisions.

To mark World Children's Day, Jay Rayner and his panel of food experts are at St Paul's Primary School, Whitechapel, answering questions from a room full of inquisitive kids. Joining Jay for his TKC debut is Young Masterchef judge Big Has, along with materials expert Dr Zoe Laughlin, and chefs Sophie Wright and Tim Anderson. Jay and the panel answer the most intriguing of questions from their audience of young foodies, including the grossest foods they've ever eaten, how to make vegetables taste nice, and the most pressing question of all - which foods make you fart? Meanwhile, Zoe Laughlin stops the show to make the Gruffalo's favourite food of all, owl ice cream, using a very special ingredient. When we discuss a variety of topics and key concepts during each episode, we like to reference some of our favorite books that are great examples of the concepts we're discussing. Although we have a long list of favorite picture books, this book might be our all-time favorite, which is The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. After listening to our podcast for so long, you know we mention this book frequently because it targets so many key concepts we look for when working with students. Because of this, in today's episode, we're doing a deep dive using The Gruffalo and sharing how to best use this book during your speech therapy sessions. On our latest weekly roundup, what happened in Vegas didn't stay there, as Catherine reported on her recent trip. Mentioned: Omega Mart. What we're watching: We continued with season 2 of Reservation Dogs with episodes 5 and 6: "Wide Net" and "Decolonativization." We learned a little more about the aunties as they headed to an out-of-town conference, and an earnest pair of workshop presenters tried to help the teens learn more about themselves (without much success).Catherine's library find this week, Slug in Love by Rachel Bright with illustrations by Nadia Shireen, prompted mention of other slug and pug books (Slug Needs a Hug, Doug the Pug, Pig the Pug) as well as reminiscences about some other faves, like Room on the Broom and The Gruffalo, both written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed neverending household tasks (March 10, 2021); launching a young adult (March 7, 2019); and Girl Scout cookies (March 8, 2018). A correction: Last week, Catherine said she had learned of a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert scheduled for the afternoon. Turns out, the band in question was the Red Hot Chilli PIPERS, which makes a lot more sense (and frankly sounds a lot more fun).Next week, we'll watch the next two episodes of Reservation Dogs, season 2: E7 “Stay Gold Cheesy Boy" (which has been inducted into the Extra Hot Great Canon) and E8 “This Is Where the Plot Thickens.” Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

This week we went somewhere on the Sunshine Coast where neither of us had been before. We visited the little historic town of Yandina. We have both passed through Yandina before, but never stopped to have a look around. It is home to one of Queensland's oldest pubs and railway stations. You can also find some funky cafes, restaurants and some gorgeous shops in the small main street area. In Yandina you will also find - as one reviewer says - “the finest restaurant in the world”. They are talking about the well loved Spirit House. After we filled up at one of the popular cafes, we headed to the famous Ginger Factory. It is one of the most visited attractions on the Sunshine Coast. We wander around, find the Gruffalo, sit under 1000 rainbow umbrellas and tell you all about the gardens, Morton the original steam train, the indoor boat ride, plus heaps more. Unfortunately we weren't hungry so we didn't enjoy a ginger scone or ginger icecream. Maybe next time. Lastly we drive 15 minutes to the popular beachside town of Coolum Beach. Coolum has the longest, flattest, widest beach on the Sunshine Coast and is very popular for surfing. It is unspoilt and the place to go if you want a relaxing beachside holiday without all the distractions. We give you all the info from our vantage spot on the balcony of the Coolum Beach Surf Club. It's a tough life, but someone has to do it. Stay listening to the end to hear what birthday present I bought for Lyle at Coolum and the popular mountain that the locals love to climb – but is actually the second biggest rock in the world – after Uluru. Most educational research now suggests that reading for pleasure is strongly linked to a child's future outcome, educational success, and even wellbeing. But the latest studies also show that reading for pleasure is at its lowest level for twenty years. Why has this happened in a country that's produced more successful children's books than any other? From Paddington, to Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia to Alice in Wonderland, and of course, the Gruffalo, the list is vast. Is a lack of access to school and local libraries the problem, too few books at home or the rise of phones, tablets and game consoles? What can schools, government, the media and parents do to help foster a love of reading that could help children throughout their lives? Author and former Children's Laureate Julia Donaldson investigates.
