https://www.sherylkline.com/blog/leading-in-times-of-uncertainty-with-stephanie-royalIn this podcast episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Stephanie Royal, Chief People and Culture Officer at the Robin Hood Foundation. Stephanie's journey and experiences provide a powerful reminder that leading with authenticity, resilience, and purpose is essential, especially in today's ever-changing landscape. Together, we unpacked the importance of embracing our unique leadership journeys, navigating cultural and societal expectations, and finding strength in community and self-care.Here are five key takeaways from our conversation:Embrace Your Unique Journey (1:17)Stephanie's journey to becoming a leader wasn't linear. Inspired by strong female role models, she learned early on the importance of carving her own path. Despite societal and familial expectations, Stephanie emphasized that we must give ourselves permission to pursue the career and life paths that align with our values. "You do you," as we like to say, because it's your life to live and your legacy to build.Find Strength in Authenticity (9:14)Stephanie reminds us that being our authentic selves is crucial for effective leadership. She shared her own experience as a woman—and often the only woman of color—in executive spaces. Staying true to her identity allowed her to cultivate meaningful relationships and lead with confidence. Authenticity, she believes, is key to feeling settled, comfortable, and ultimately impactful in our leadership roles.Trust is Essential in Times of Uncertainty (16:45)During uncertain times, having the trust of your team is paramount. Stephanie emphasizes that being a trusted leader makes it easier to guide teams through crises. By building relationships grounded in trust and transparency, leaders can inspire confidence and collaboration. In times of change, clear communication and a well-articulated plan can be a stabilizing force for the team.Prioritize Self-Care and Reflection (24:12)One practical tool Stephanie introduced is embedding weekly reflection time into your schedule. This allows leaders to pause, review, and celebrate progress with their teams, helping everyone stay grounded and motivated. Whether it's a dedicated hour or even just 10 minutes, reflection gives you the chance to recalibrate and focus on what's working.Build Your Support System (28:33)Stephanie's final takeaway is about the importance of finding and nurturing a support system. Building connections, having trusted peers or mentors, and taking time for self-care are vital for long-term success and well-being. As she reminds us, “find your people” and invest in relationships that keep you grounded and resilient. This episode was a powerful reminder that being intentional, authentic, and supported as leaders is essential for navigating today's challenges. If you're ready to strengthen your leadership journey, I'd love to connect. Book a discovery call with me to explore how high-level coaching can support your biggest goals and support your team.Cheering you on always.Sheryl

The saying “it takes a village to raise a child” doesn't explicitly factor in how much that village will cost. The price of just “being Black” is expensive. And for many creatives, innovators, and entrepreneurs, the cost of growth and expansion is unaffordable. Although one of the brief responses to the murder of George Floyd was a slight uptick in public and private commitments, data reveals that funding to Black entrepreneurs still severely lagged in comparison to what white spaces received. Institutions gained a lot of clout and exposure being connected to the brand of Black activism and movement, but not that most have departed from their public promises, Black entrepreneurs seeking to build impactful ventures are lumped back into the traditional models of funding and support—which includes tokenizing and the VC quest for the next “unicorn” in tech and business. Former NYC Deputy Mayor and current CEO of Robin Hood Foundation, Richard Buery, Jr., challenges the From Chains to Links community to question whether these standards yield sustainable results, and how bridging imagination with capital interventions helps us build the villages we deserve

These days, when Congress is so often paralyzed by in-fighting between the extreme and the more extreme wings of the Republican Party, it's often up to states to fend for themselves. That puts a lot of responsibility in the hands of our governors - responsibility that some use for good, and others use for ill.   On today's episode, Hillary talks with two newly-minted governors who are doing everything they can to improve the lives and future prospects of the people whom they serve.   Before taking office as the first woman and first LGBTQ+ governor of Massachusetts, Maura Healey had already proved her mettle—first as a college and pro-basketball player, later as the Chief of the Civil Rights Division of the Attorney General's Office, and then as the first openly gay Attorney General in the country. She shares her priorities with Hillary, from making life in Massachusetts more affordable, to tackling climate change, easing the migrant crisis, and encouraging young people to see themselves as future leaders.   The first public office Maryland Governor Wes Moore ever ran for is the one he now holds. But his experiences as the child of a single immigrant mother, a U.S. Army Captain, and CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation gave him his “why”—to lift families out of poverty, promote economic growth, and lead young people to public service. He won in a landslide, making him the first Black governor of Maryland, and only the third elected Black governor anywhere in the country. He and Hillary talk about how he's settling into the job, what he's been able to accomplish, and why you've got to celebrate the wins even when they come with compromises.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Maryland voters head to the polls next week. Mail-in voting has already begun. Early voting starts Thursday. Election day is two weeks from Tuesday. Today, it's a special installment in our series of Conversations with the Candidates 2022.  Two of the three leading candidates in the Democratic primary for Governor join Tom for the hour to discuss the issues on the minds of Marylanders. In early June, a poll published by the Baltimore Sun identified Comptroller Peter Franchot, non-profit executive Wes Moore and former Labor Secretary Tom Perez leading a 10-person field in the Democratic primary. Those three candidates polled in the low double-digits. A large number of respondents said they had not made up their minds. In a poll released on Tuesday of this week, commissioned by WYPR, the Baltimore Banner and Goucher College showed the race between Mr. Franchot, Mr. Moore and Mr. Perez to be even closer than it was in early June. Those three candidates are now in a statistical tie. The other candidate who is closest to them is former Attorney General Doug Gansler, who is about ten points behind. We invited the top three candidates to appear on Tuesday of this week. Peter Franchot's spokesperson declined our invitation citing a schedule conflict. We tried a different date, today, and once again citing a schedule conflict, the Franchot campaign declined our invitation. And so, we are pleased to welcome Wes Moore and Tom Perez to today's conversation. They join us on Zoom. Wes Moore is a best-selling author who has worked in the private and non-profit sector. He was most recently the CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, a national philanthropic organization. And, full disclosure: he once hosted Future City,a public affairs show on WYPR. He has chosen as his running mate former Delegate Aruna Miller from Montgomery County… Tom Perez is a lawyer who headed the Civil Rights Division in the US Justice Department, and served as MD labor secretary during the O'Malley administration. He was also appointed US Labor Secretary during the Obama Administration, and he was the chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). He has chosen as his running mate Shannon Sneed, a former Baltimore City Councilwoman… We begin with an opportunity for each candidate to say hello and explain why they deserve your vote. Capital for Good

In this episode of Capital for Good, we speak with Samantha Tweedy, the inaugural president of the Black Economic Alliance Foundation, the nation's leading organization harnessing the collective expertise and influence of Black business leaders and allies to build generational wealth and economic prosperity for the Black community. Tweedy has spent her career building and leading transformative racial and economic justice initiatives at the intersection of the public, private, and philanthropic sectors, showing how equitable and inclusive growth creates a more prosperous country, and future, for all Americans. In this conversation, Tweedy begins with personal history, explaining how her commitment to issues of equity and justice — for using the opportunities afforded her to create opportunities for others — comes via “osmosis,” as she follows in the footsteps of grandparent trailblazers in the fight for civil rights and racial and economic justice. Tweedy describes how her early career in educational equity and access, as a litigator and school leader, gave her a deeper understanding of structural and multigenerational disparities. At the Robin Hood Foundation, she saw many uncomfortable but important truths in the data: the persistent black and white wealth gap in communities Robin Hood served and the fact that, despite increases in overall philanthropy, only 10 percent went to organizations led by people of color trying to solve problems of poverty racial and economic disparity in the first place. Accordingly, Tweedy launched Robin Hood's nearly $20 million Power Fund to invest in and elevate nonprofit leaders of color focused on increasing mobility from poverty and addressing specifically, through the expertise and understanding of proximity and lived experience, the interplay of racial and economic injustice through their work. In many ways, this effort connects directly to the Foundation Tweedy is building and leading at the Black Economic Alliance — an organization committed to driving progress for the Black community, with a particular focus on improving economic outcomes in work, wages, and wealth. Only a few months into her new role, Tweedy is directing a range of policy, advocacy, and business and government engagement initiatives. She walks us through a few of these, including the new Center for Black Entrepreneurship, a partnership with Spelman and Morehouse Colleges, and the Black Economic Alliance Entrepreneurs Fund. Yesterday, Governor Larry Hogan signed into law a revised mapwith new boundaries for Congressional districts, after a judge in Anne Arundel County threw out the original map drawn by Democrats last December. When MD Attorney General Brian Frosh changed his decision to appeal that ruling, the Governor agreed to the new maps, saying in a statement, that the maps, quote, “weren't, in my opinion, as good as the ones drawn by the citizen commission, and we shouldn't have wasted so much time—but they are a huge improvement.” The commission he referred to was a bipartisan group the Governor appointed. A number of redistricting maps created by Republicans have been thrown out in court around the country because they were found to be unconstitutional due to gerrymandering. The decision in MD is the first time a map drawn by Democrats met the same fate. The maps for state legislative districts remain in limbo. In a separate case, Republicans challenged those maps in court as well. The Court of Appeals is expected to rule in that case soon. Primary elections are scheduled for July 19th. Early voting will begin on July 7th. Today on Midday, we continue with our election-year interview series, Conversations with the Candidates: 2022. Tom's guest is Wes Moore, who is one of 10 candidates in the Democratic primary for Governor. This is Wes Moore's first run for elective office. Green, of what led up to, and what happened after the 2015 Freddie Gray uprising.  He founded an organization called BridgeEdU, which helps students navigate the college experience, and before he entered the primary race, he was the CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, a national anti-poverty organization. Wes Moore holds an Associate's degree from Valley Forge Military College, and an undergraduate degree in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University. In the world's most carceral state (the US), what is often overlooked is the human cost of locking away people for their crimes, big and small. The most failed group behind bars is our country's youth. At Avenues for Justice, we expose the injustice of locking up youth and highlight the human potential that can be captured by providing a second chance to a young person that is caught up in the justice system. Angel has been doing this work for over 40 years and was one of the first to actively try to solve the problem with Avenues for Justice.Launched in 1979, Avenues for Justice (then known as the Andrew Glover Youth Program) was one of the first alternatives to incarceration (ATI) programs for youth in the US and remains one of the few to have continuous Latinx leadership. Avenues for Justice was instrumental in fighting for youth to be separated from adults in the justice system. Through our 40+years, we have maintained among the highest success rates in the country - 95% of our participants do not commit a crime during a post-graduation three-year tracking period.Avenues for Justice currently serves 300+ ATI court-involved, at-risk, and re-entry youth and young adults per year at our centers in Harlem and the Lower East Side, and at our Manhattan Criminal Courthouse offices. For over four decades, Angel Rodriguez has served as AFJ's Executive Director, working with youth in the community in which he grew up, went to school, and still lives today. Part youth worker, part organizational leader, Angel has direct and daily involvement with clients, supervising the most sensitive advocacy procedures and carrying a heavy caseload. A known and respected figure both in the courtroom and on the streets of the Lower East Side, Angel's work continues around the clock as he moves through the neighborhood. Under Angel's leadership, AFJ has been the recipient of many awards including the New York State Bar Association's Public Service Award, Manufacturers Hanover'sCommunity Development Award, and the Exxon Corporation Community Service Award. For his personal dedication to AFJ, Angel received an honorary law degree from the CUNY Law School atQueens College and in 1994, Angel was selected as one of three outstanding community activists inNew York City to receive the Robin Hood Foundation's Hero Award in 1996.Organization: Avenues for JusticeWebsite: avenuesforjustice.orgFacebook: facebook.com/avenuesforjusticeInstagram: instagram.com/avenuesforjusticeLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/avenuesforjustice/ Organization: Avenues for JusticeWebsite: avenuesforjustice.orgFacebook: facebook.com/avenuesforjusticeInstagram: instagram.com/avenuesforjusticeLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/avenuesforjustice/Tune in for this sensible conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by Clicking Here.

In this episode of Capital for Good, we speak with Wes Moore, bestselling author, combat veteran, social entrepreneur, chief executive officer of the Robin Hood Foundation, and one of the country's leading voices on issues of economic opportunity, and social, and racial equity.   Moore's first book, The Other Wes Moore, a perennial New York Times bestseller, captured the nation's attention on the fine line between success and failure in our communities and in ourselves. He is also the author of the The Work, Discovering Wes Moore, This Way Home and the recently released, Five Days. Moore grew up in Baltimore and the Bronx, where he was raised by a single mom. Despite childhood challenges, he graduated Phi Theta Kappa from Valley Forge Military College in 1998 and Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University in 2001. He earned an MLitt in international relations from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar in 2004. Moore then served as a captain and paratrooper with the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division, including a combat deployment to Afghanistan. He later served as a White House Fellow to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Before becoming CEO at Robin Hood, one of the largest anti-poverty forces in the nation, Moore was the founder and CEO at BridgeEdU, an education platform addressing the college completion and job placement crisis. Moore has also worked in finance as an investment banker with Deutsche Bank in London and with Citigroup in New York.   In this wide-ranging conversation, we begin with Robin Hood's response to the COVID-19 crisis in New York City, where it has successfully raised and deployed more than $65 million in emergency relief across hundreds of organizations. We also examine how the deep social, economic and racial disparities that existed in health, wealth, income, employment, educational outcomes, justice involvement, etc. that existed pre-COVID have informed and centered Robin Hood's work in the pandemic. Moore walks us through some of the ways in which Robin Hood has begun to address the structural biases and inequities in philanthropy that that have resulted, historically, in drastic under-funding of organizations led by people of color. We also touch on the role of philanthropy in advocating for anti-racist and anti-poverty policy, the role of business in promoting racial equity, and the power of storytelling, as exemplified by Moore's latest book, Five Days. “I choose to be one of the people who chooses hope,” Moore says. “While progress is not inevitable, it is possible, and that becomes our role and our responsibility: to really push for that progress that we think is important when it comes to creating a better future.”   Mentioned in this Episode Robin Hood Relief Fund Racial Equity and Philanthropy: Disparities in Funding for Leaders of Color Leave Impact on the Table, Cheryl Dorsey, Jeff Bradach, Peter Kim (Bridgespan, 2020) The Power Fund: Investing in Leaders of Color, Robin Hood The Black Voices for Black Justice Fund, Black Voices Blue Ridge Labs at Robin Hood Robin Hood Poverty Tracker reports here, Columbia Center on Poverty and Social Policy
