What do you think of when you think about a pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord? Is it a seamless marriage of hop, malt, yeast and water? Or is it perhaps the pristine vistas offered by the hills and dales of Yorkshire? God's Own Country they call it, modestly. Maybe it's about that duff pint you had in a random Soho pub that tasted of idleness and regret? All three perspectives are valid. There is a lot that goes into the production, consumption and (potentially) enjoyment of this near universally acknowledged and appreciated beer. One that is the second largest cask beer by both volume and value in the United Kingdom, neatly behind the ubiquitous Doom Bar from the Molson Coors-owned Sharp's (which also makes Landlord the largest independently produced cask beer in the UK.) 19 million pints of this pale, Yorkshire bitter are supped, swilled and scoffed at every single year. That's quite a feat, when you think about it. It is these reasons that stimulated our latest long read: A Polyptych of a Pint, by Rachel Hendry. As a feature it is one that came into being thanks to a little bit of serendipity. While Rachel and I were wrapping up the production of an earlier piece she wrote for us on the history of Babycham, at the end of an email she opted to include a couple of sentences that indicated she wished to write about Landlord. By coincidence I had also been sitting on the open offer of a tour at the brewery, and suggested she might like to join me, as research on her yet-to-be feature began in earnest. That tour was led by the current CEO of Timothy Taylor's, Tim Dewey. An ex-spirits man who formerly led marketing at brands like Smirnoff and Drambuie, he's sat in the big chair at Taylor's for over a decade now, and announced his impending retirement earlier this year. More serendipity, then, in that Rachel and I were lucky enough to catch Tim before he started to enjoy a well-earned retirement. In this episode join Rachel Hendry and Matthew Curtis as we chat to Timothy Taylor's CEO Tim Dewey about all things Landlord. Find out why it's one of the most well loved, and indeed, talked about (and argued over) cask beers in the country in this must-listen-to episode of our podcast. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. Cutting taxes on tips may sound like a good idea, but many economists don't love it. Earlier this summer, former President Trump proposed eliminating federal taxes on tips. A few weeks ago, Vice President Harris said if elected, she would also seek to end taxes on tipped income for service and hospitality workers like servers, bartenders and barbers. While tips are considered taxable income, cash tips for restaurant workers and others have gone largely unreported. But, that has changed with the proliferation of credit cards and mobile payment options. On Tuesday, MPR News host Angela Davis and her guests talk about why the idea may not help and could actually hurt most tipped workers. Guests:Chris Farrell, MPR's senior economics contributor.Timothy Taylor, economist and managing editor of the “Journal of Economic Perspectives,” a quarterly academic journal produced at Macalester College and published by the American Economic Association.

Voting should be straightforward: Figure out which candidate or party best fits one's political views or interests, and vote accordingly. But the last few elections have shown many Americans that it's not nearly that simple. We could benefit from a new framework for thinking about voting, and not just for elections in which we find ourselves especially bewildered.Guest Bryan McGraw joins us to discuss a new philosophy of voting and how to apply it in this year's elections.Bryan McGraw is an associate professor of politics and dean of social sciences at Wheaton College. His main areas of research are in contemporary political thought and especially how those traditions intersect with religious belief and practice. This podcast discusses themes from Bryan and Timothy Taylor's essay in the Winter 2024 issue of National Affairs, “How to Think about Voting.”

Hine and Buckley find an unexpected amount of common ground with Emily as they discuss her journey from wide-eyed belief to pragmatic scepticism, what it is that makes human beings sometimes believe ideas that are provably untrue, which famous conspiracy theories Emily thinks probably do have truth to them and Vayse finally tackles (with the help of a hardened sceptic) the recent David Grusch revelations... In this episode, Stephen & Aaron make their way through the beers kindly sent to them from the new Drink Cask Fresh campaign; a campaign designed to reform cask beer and reinvigorate people's passion for it. Cask beer is unique to this country, but it is often treated as a second-grade citizen in the beer world, often dismissed as nothing more than brown, boring or even twiggy beer! We bust some myths regarding cask beer in an attempt to promote and save this genuine British institution as it is something we created and is completely unique to us as a nation. During this show we drink beers included in the box from Timothy Taylor, Robinson's, Dark Star and Titanic all of which were well-received and excellent examples of bottle conditioned beer that would be delightful on cask as per this campaign. Of course, this box is for promotional purposes and the intention is that we all head to our local and drink fresh pints of cask where we can. For more info, head to the Drink Cask Fresh website here

There's plenty going on as Dave B and Dave D return to your ears with episode 44 of Daftaboutcraft. We kick off in traditional fashion with Brew To Me, where we try a beer from a brewery we haven't sampled before. This time we're putting the spotlight on Broadtown Brewery and Spookton Brew Co and we're joined by Jason and Jon for an insight into these breweries from Wiltshire and the Wirral.Sam from Copper Beech Brew Co in Kidderminster is back for the latest Brewer's Wife, and there's an amusing tale to tell about a new vehicle and how life as part of a brewery is never altogether straightforward. We put the Hype Or Tripe focus on a big-hitting stout made by those wizards in the East Midlands at Reckless Dweeb Brew Co and Bang The Elephant Brewing Co. We saw the pictures from when this was made and it looked a particularly messy session with the brewkit. But how does the end product taste? In Any Other Beersness we welcome back Anthony Barrett from Twisted Wheel Brew Co to give us an update on the brewery he resurrected from extinction at the end of last year, while there's an interesting taste test going on as well - from cask legends Timothy Taylor's. The podcast is sponsored by Hops At Home, and Andy Marsh appears on each episode with news on his latest stock and an offer for you to take advantage of. This episode sees an extension of the Daftaboutcraft box - 12 beers from north-east breweries including Almasty, Two By Two, Full Circle, Wylam and more, delivered to your door for £50, inclusive of postage.Daftaboutcraft is produced by us two guys, called Dave. We're massive fans of the craft beer scene and we release a new episode every three weeks. Read more in Feed Spot's top 30 craft beer podcasts, which you can see here. Authorities in May 2022 finally arrested the serial rapist responsible for Brittanee Drexel's death, solving a murder and kidnapping case that cast a shadow over the state of South Carolina nearly 15 years. But the frustrating part is detectives came agonizingly close to solving the case 11 years earlier, and even identified the suspecT: Raymond Douglas Moody. In this episode you'll hear the horrific 2011 interview investigators conducted with Angel Vause, Moody's girlfriend, as they tried to determine if Moody's history of violent sexual assaults in California was "starting again" in his native South Carolina — with deadly consequences for Brittanee Drexel. Also, you'll get the reason law enforcement officers say they ultimately weren't able to charge Moody with Drexel's death back in 2011, setting the stage for the false accusations and public railroading of Timothy Taylor and his family.Look for other interviews with Moody's boyfriend in prison who returned with him to Georgetown after being paroled, and the lead detective whose fresh eyes on Brittanee's case brought led police to the right suspect at the wrong time.~~~~~~~~~~Finding Brittanee Drexel is a documentary podcast from WCIV's Edward R. In it you'll hear exclusive interviews, never before revealed details and unprecedented insight into an investigation spanning more than a decade.Join investigative reporter Anne Emerson for stories of daring searches through murky South Carolina swamps, the dogged pursuit of an innocent man, and the chilling truth about the suspect who has confessed to Brittanee's kidnapping and murder. For more on the Brittanee Drexel case, visit ABCNews4.com/Drexel.For updates on the series and exclusive extras, follow @UnsolvedSCPod on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.Be sure to check out Unsolved South Carolina's other podcast series, The Murdaugh Murders, Money & Mystery, which follows the ongoing criminal saga involving Alex Murdaugh, disgraced South Carolina attorney on trial accused of murdering his wife and son to cover up the theft of millions of dollars.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode of the Points of Brew podcast, Stephen & Aaron head over to the Gaping Goose in Garforth as this was Aaron's first place of employment during his school years. The Gaping Goose has a great local reputation for its community-led approach and its well-kept cask ales, being recognised for its excellence by Timothy Taylor's themselves. During this show we drank Theakston's Best Bitter, Adnam's Broadside and Ossett's Yorkshire Blonde, all served on cask and in great condition too. Being on the outskirts of Garforth, it is a distance from the main street but it is worth the trip over to check out what guest ales they are serving. We also discuss Aaron's recent trips to Spain and Halifax and the beer that he found there, followed by looking at Quirky's latest beer launches and finally our upcoming collaboration brew day. We will document this journey and can't wait to make it happen! Huge thanks to Jo for hosting us and we look forward to returning in the future! Order The Story of Art without Men here: https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-story-of-art-without-men/katy-hessel/9781529151145 Acclaimed for her richly layered paintings of family, friends, lovers and more that occupy spaces between reality and surreality, memory and imagination, Antonia Showering paints her subjects full of conviction and full of emotion. Layered with narratives of, in her words, ‘stacked recollections', her paintings can appear at once haunting and ethereal, ghoulish yet protective, and although they are personal to her, they can speak for us all. Infused with both an acidic and muted colour palette, with thick impasto and washy strokes, Antonia's paintings deal with universal subjects on a personal level. Speaking about the canvas, she has said: “I see the canvas as a physical space where feelings of belonging or displacement, love or loneliness, intergenerational memory, superstitions and regrets can be turned into something visual and shared with the viewer.” Born in London, and raised in Somerset, to an English father and Swiss-Chinese mother, Antonia's upbringing, family and heritage play central roles in her work. Having completed her foundation year at Chelsea, her BA at City and Guilds, and then her MFA at the Slade School of Art, Antonia, in just a few years, has become one of the most exciting young painters of her generation. Featured in exhibitions at Stephen Friedman Gallery and TJ Boulting, New Contemporaries and of course The Great Women Artists Residency at Palazzo Monti, Antonia recently had her first solo exhibition at Timothy Taylor which was met with acclaim. In today's episode Rosa Torr chats with Jane Shea and Julia Sheehan who both coordinated the Hepatitis C Trust's women's prison team. Having met first as inmates and reconnected in the Hep C Trust's offices, the pair found an opportunity to reach women in prisons and encourage an environment where women felt free to talk, come forward and get tested. Our prisons are full of women who should not be incarcerated but who are in need of help and support through other means. Women in vulnerable positions are less likely to come forward and ask for help for fear of the implications and increased exposure. By addressing women's needs, some woman can avoid getting caught up in the criminal justice system and have their problems addressed in a more appropriate setting. Women with addiction issues are much more likely to have hepatitis C. The prevalence of hepatitis C among women in prison is higher than in the male prison cohort. Getting tested and treated is a crucial step in rehabilitating women's health and lives. Jane and Julia discuss their most recent project; a magazine called ‘i am' provides a cathartic outlet for women who are incarcerated. Good Beer Hunting
SL-025 No Relief for Small Brewers

Good Beer Hunting

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 17, 2020 39:05

Welcome to the Sightlines podcast. I’m Jonny Garrett. On July 21, barely three weeks after the U.K.’s hospitality industry and pubs came out of lockdown, the government announced it would be raising the amount of alcohol tax paid by small breweries. The backlash was immediate and furious, but it wasn’t only against the government. The anger was also aimed at a group of larger breweries that had campaigned for the tax rise. Let that sink in for a moment: A group of businesses successfully campaigned for higher taxes within their own industry, specifically for up-and-coming competitors. To work out how it came to this, we need to take a step back. It starts with a bill known as Small Brewers Relief (SBR), which was put into law in 2002. The bill gives all U.K. breweries smaller than 5,000 hectoliters (about 4,300 U.S. barrels) of annual production a 50% reduction in their alcohol tax. Beyond that volume, as the brewery grows, that reduction tapers off to zero. Almost since the bill’s inception, some owners of breweries above the 5,000hl threshold have claimed the system gives small brewers an unfair pricing advantage. Meanwhile, those below see SBR as a lifeline without which new breweries would be unable to survive and grow. After around five years of campaigning for reform and a two-year research project by the U.K. Treasury, the larger breweries—under an alliance called the Small Brewers Duty Reform Coalition—have won. The new rules mean small breweries will pay more tax starting at 2,100hl, which would immediately increase alcohol duty payments for around 150 existing businesses—by as much as £50,000 ($67,500) a year. The Coalition believes the move will increase the price they can charge wholesalers for their beer, but they also say that it will encourage more growth among small breweries. They reason that starting the tax taper at a lower threshold—at 2,100hl—will remove what campaigners call the “cliff-edge” at 5,000hl, when duty payments suddenly start to escalate and making profit becomes significantly tougher. Those small breweries, however, believe lowering the threshold will just limit their growth earlier, and see the move as a land grab by powerful brewing companies worried about the growth of craft beer beneath them. In the wake of the news, several industry commentators called for drinkers to boycott the companies leading the charge for reform, including national brands like Timothy Taylor’s Brewery, Harvey’s Brewery, Wye Valley Brewery, and Hogs Back Brewery. Beer can be political, and Small Brewers Relief has brought divisions within the industry into sharp focus, asking fundamental questions of who needs and deserves financial support in these difficult times: the historical, traditional breweries, or the new startups? How much should the state prop up private businesses? Is growth always the goal? And how sustainable is pricing in the industry, particularly around cask beer? In this episode, we’ll talk to brewery owners on both sides of the argument, and will get the views of the economist who cowrote the academic paper that helped Small Brewers Relief come into being in the first place. You’ll hear how both sides have valid points to make—and that neither Small Brewers Relief nor any reforms of it have much hope of solving the industry’s underlying problems. This is the Sightlines podcast. Listen in.

This week on the Hop Forward Podcast we reconnect with Timothy Taylor’s Chief Executive to discuss their stance and statement on the reforms to Small Breweries’ Relief. When calls to boycott breweries and pull of out of pints ensued like a cascade of beer flowing from a DVP with an open dump valve, many of the breweries who form part of the Small Breweries’ Duty Reform Coalition (SBDRC) scrambled to clarify their position on social media with a variety of statements condemning the lowering of the duty threshold. Timothy Taylor’s on the other hand didn’t. In this episode, we look at why Timothy Taylor’s are holding their ground in order, as they put it, to save cask beer from becoming even more commoditised; we talk about how the brewery sits within the tension of being both a member of SIBA while actively disagreeing with SIBA’s position and lobbying government on the reforms, and Tim explains how the they dealt with the backlash of consumers, craft beer fans and brewers across the board. While I may not agree with the brewery’s position on the issue personally, I want to publicly thank Tim for taking part in the podcast and agreeing to come on the show to have a frank conversation and answer some tough questions. The purpose of this and last week’s episode was to highlight both perspectives to help facilitate healthy discussion and debate rather than reopen a can of worms. We hope you’ve done that and - if you disagree - please do so in a respectful manner. --- Northern Ireland’s Licensing Bill is currently going through the Legislative Assembly and brewers are seeking an amendment to allow them to finally sell their own beer in taprooms as well as off-sales. In recent months I've become fascinated by the idea of legacy in modern beer, and what kind of impact today's brewers will have on the next generation of beer lovers. We're incredibly fortunate for the existence of beers like Timothy Taylor's Landlord, Harvey's Best, St. Austell Tribute and Fyne Ale's very own Jarl—beers with a seemingly timeless quality that will hopefully continue to be enjoyed for decades to come. But what's next? They say it takes at least 10 years to build a brand, and with many modern breweries focusing instead on limited releases and one-off beers, what are they building in terms of brand and identity? In this discussion we try to get to the bottom of this.I'm joined on this panel by three people who are highly invested in their brands: Tina Breslin, the illustrator behind the compelling cans from Manchester's Wander Beyond, Andrew Mathews of Vibrant Forest Brewery, known for its equally vibrant artwork, and the lovely Iain Smith, marketing manager at Fyne Ales, who was the person kind enough to let us folks at Pellicle host these talks. It's a fascinating chat, especially if you're interested in branding and design as well as the beer itself. And apologies for a little background noise, this was recorded at a festival heading well into the livelier portion of its afternoon. Host: Matthew Curtis Guests: Tina Breslin — Wander Beyond, Andrew Mathews — Vibrant Forest, Iain "Arrows" Smith — Fyne AlesRead more at www.pelliclemag.comSupport our podcast at patreon.com/pelliclemag

Cast your mind back to the first ever pint of Landlord from West Yorkshire brewery Timothy Taylor’s. What was it like? I'm sure there's not a beer drinker out there who hasn't experienced the delightful tingle of a cask conditioned pint tingling on the tongue with zety notes, a thick creamy head; the unique taste pulled together from the Knowle Spring well; Simpson's Golden Promise malt; zesty and grassy notes from Fuggles and Goldings hops; and the a yeast strain that compliments all these flavours with a bready, nutty taste of its own. First introduced in 1952, the beer has gone on to be Champion Beer of Britain and Brewing Industry International Award winners over 25 times, and that’s just between the 1980’s to date. What makes Landlord so prestigious is their attention to detail and quality assurance; not just in the brewhouse but running throughout the entire business and brand. To find out more about one of Britain's most loved and respected family brewers, we sat down with Chief Executive Tim Dewey and Head Brewer Andy Leman to chat about the history of the brewery and Landlord, what makes their brewery process and beers unique, where they see British pubs and cask beer heading over the coming years, and some of the challenges that a brewer such as Timothy Taylor’s face in today’s market. --- Today’s episode of the Hop Forward podcast has been brought to you by Simpsons Malt, the UK’s independent Home of Good Malt. Founded in 1862, Simpsons Malt is a fifth-generation family-owned business which has a passion for making malts with taste, flavour and consistently high quality with the world’s best brewers and distillers in mind, helping them to craft the finest beers and whiskies. Good Beer Hunting
EP-133 Richard Burhouse of Magic Rock Brewing Company

Good Beer Hunting

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2017 62:32

The county of Yorkshire has more breweries per capita than anywhere else in the UK. And though it’s home to buzzing city hubs such as Leeds and Sheffield, much of the brewing landscape is to be found within the county’s rural environment and smaller towns. It’s home to traditional breweries such as Theakston’s, Timothy Taylor, and Black Sheep as well breweries with a more modern outlook, such as Summer Wine and Rooster’s.   Richard Burhouse, along with his brother Johnny and head brewer Stuart Ross, founded Magic Rock Brewing Company in the town of Huddersfield in 2010. Before the arrival of Magic Rock, Huddersfield already had a reputation for being a great beer town, as it was home to renowned pubs such as The Grove and The Sportsman. However, it was perhaps the arrival of Magic Rock, and subsequently its taproom in 2015, which really put the town on the national beer map.   As well as being inspired by Yorkshire’s real-ale heritage, Burhouse was also fascinated by what was happening in the U.S., and has spent plenty of time researching beer in the States. The influence of West Coast breweries such as Stone, Green Flash, and Russian River is immediately apparent in his beers, such as High Wire Pale Ale and Cannonball IPA.   Not content to rest on its laurels, however, Magic Rock is constantly adapting its brewing processes to keep pace with trends. The past 12 months has seen them release several New England-inspired limited release IPAs, some of which have been collaborations with the likes of Cloudwater and Other Half. At the same time, Burhouse is trying to balance his brewery in the local market by simultaneously offering a high quality, nicely priced range of cask ales.   In this episode, we skip from topics such as pricing and quality issues, to the takeover of RateBeer, which has often showered plaudits on Magic Rock’s beers. We also speak briefly about the sold out Uppers & Downers London, where we’re super excited to have Magic Rock pouring a collab with Dark Woods Coffee this September. This episode was recorded in a working pub near my home in North London home, and as a result, there’s a couple occasions where there’s a little background noise. Thanks for your patience.

They discuss what, exactly, Vancouver is; what, exactly, CanLit is; his being born into a nomadic lifestyle; his inadvertent prediction of the modern locavore movement; whether one can live in Vancouver without developing an interest in architecture; his fascination with creative and toxic "dyadic relationships," as well as the place of emulation and envy in human affairs; how he discovered René Girard's ideas about "mimetic desire" and came up with a critique of consumerism contra his countrywoman Naomi Klein; the visible desires of Vancouver and its murky, independent-minded past; our quasi-sacrificial system of celebrity; what he learned from watching reaction videos on YouTube; his moves from the navy to banking to consulting to writing;  how he grew fascinated with entrepreneurs; why we haven't eaten so well, historically, in North America; Canada's potential as the New-Worldiest place in the New World; his search for where people gather when he visits a new city, and where he would say Vancouverites go to be Vancouverites; his disputation of tradition in Canadian literature; his next project picking up on the lives of the characters from Stanley Park; and what to open yourself up to when you come to Vancouver.
