By Joe Wiegand, Medora's TR 4/4/2020 "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far." During his brief tenure as Vice-President, while speaking at the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul, Labor Day, 1901, TR first quoted the old African proverb so closely associated with his own presidential administration. During his Presidency, TR would declare the Chippewa and Superior National Forests in Minnesota. On April 4, 1903, on his great tour of the west, TR spoke before the Minnesota Legislature in St. Paul and to an audience at the University Chapel at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In 1912, Minnesota was one of six states carried by the Bull Moose Progressive.
