A monthly update from the state agency that manages the budget says tax collections were about 2 percent lower than expected last month — about $64 million less.A Becker County attorney has added a second burglary charge against Woodbury state Sen. Nicole Mitchell linked to an alleged attempt to remove items from her stepmother's house in Detroit Lakes in April of last year. The new charge is one count of possession of burglary or theft tools. Both charges against Mitchell are felonies. If convicted, the DFL senator could face prison.And Gov. Tuesday at noon was the official start of the Minnesota Legislature's 2025 session. It has been a strange start to say the least. A judge ruled Tuesday morning in favor of a DFL lawmaker's narrow win, although the decision may not bring an end to a dispute about seating him. The tied Senate gaveled in under a power-sharing deal. But the state House of Representatives' kickoff has been tinged with friction, threats and uncertainty. MPR News correspondent Peter Cox joined MPR News host Nina Moini from the Capitol.
Democratic and Republican leaders of the Minnesota Senate say they have come to an agreement to jointly run the chamber while it is tied for much of this month. Meanwhile, in the Minnesota House, Democrats took their oaths of office Sunday — as part of an effort to block Republican control when the legislative session begins.And three people died in a two-vehicle, head-on crash Sunday afternoon in central Minnesota. House Republicans will start the 2025 legislative session with a Minnesota House majority — at least for the purposes of organizing the chamber — now that a DFL candidate has opted against appealing a court defeat. For the first month of session, the Minnesota Senate will be tied 33-33 following the passing of former Senate Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic.A special election for both seats will be held at the end of next month.
