Anders Holm swam for two years at the University of Wisconsin before being terminated after getting into a bar fight. Admittedly, he lost everything. But he stayed at UW Madison and poured his time, energy, and focus into his writing. After graduating, he moved to LA where he met Adam Devine, Blake Anderson, and Kyle Newacheck. They created comedy sketches for years until they finally got their big break from Comedy Central, and created Workaholics. In this episode, Anders talks about his love and passion for swimming and how the sport set him up to become a Hollywood success story. Ders is still in the pool and just completed his first tri, the Malibu Triathlon. Can you recall last year when the pools were shut during our 3 lockdowns? I think the pools were closed for approximately 30 weeks from mid-March 2020 to mid-April 2021. If you were like me, you looked for alternatives. I settled for some bungee cords with hand paddles attached. Others opted for the more exotic homemade paddling pools with a tether. The lucky ones were able to use an existing swim bench or even managed to purchase one. The most well-known of these is the VASA Trainer ergometer which was invented by today's guest, Rob Sleamaker, over 30 years ago. If you haven't seen one then just think indoor trainer for swimming. As you can imagine, during the lockdowns of the past 18 months, demand for these products went through the roof. I wanted to find out more about how and why Rob invented the VASA Trainer, and how we as triathletes might benefit from a different approach to swim training. Rob has a wealth of knowledge and an easy way of getting his ideas across. Listen closely and you'll pick up a few tips to improve your swimming as we chat about: How a VASA Trainer can improve your front crawl stroke and your swim performance If you use a VASA Trainer you can swim less and still improve Overcoming the mono-speed pull Why consistent swim training builds confidence Prioritising swim efficiency over getting faster The kayak analogy - why drag slows you down and how to minimise drag in your stroke Rob's 3 keys reasons why you will benefit from using a VASA Trainer If you would like to follow Rob or find out more about the VASA Trainer please visit these places: To follow Rob, Facebook To Follow VASA Trainer Instagram - @vasatrainer Youtube Facebook LinkedIn If you would like to find out more about VASA Trainer, please visit their website HERE Rob mentioned his recently published book, Triathlon Freestyle Simplified. Rob Sleamkaer is the author of Serious Training for Serious Athletes. This book, first published in 1989, single handedly transformed my understanding of how to structure a training plan to win bike races. I first read the book when I was still at school, and to this day I believe this book has stood the test of time. Sport science is a rapidly evolving subject but Rob has produced one of the texts that will always remain the cornerstone of any training plan worth its salt. My guest today is exercise physiologist and author, Rob Sleamaker, a SPORTY VERMONTER, INNOVATOR & DARN GOOD guy, based off what his website reads, and founder and creator of my favorite way to train indoors, the Vasa Trainer and Vasa SUP Erg. As a professional stand up paddle boarder, I am always looking to hone my skills for the water, and sometimes living in the midwest, I have to hone my skills off the water more than I would like. That's why I am a huge fan and user of the Vasa SUP Erg - a stellar low-EMF ergometer that simulates stand up paddling indoors and allows me to get better and better. But this podcast is more than just a great product introduction and review.... Rob also talks motivation, and how to keep it going well into 2019 and beyond. He also shares insight on why he thinks sticking to exercise is so hard for so many, why it's about staying curious, and he even tells us what it's like to be an "exuberant animal". (Link: exuberantanimal.com ) I think he also will be getting a pair of Ra Optics Nocturnal Red lenses after this because he really liked mine. Raoptics.io and use code: GETFIT to save 10%! Rob Sleamaker walked into the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) World Clinic with an unconventional new product. It was the Vasa Trainer, a swim bench that unknowingly would change dryland swim training forever. Already an acclaimed exercise physiologist and author, Rob had seen the effects of intensely focused dry land training firsthand with Olympic level Nordic skiers & biathletes — but would the world’s most respected swim coaches be interested in training their swimmers outside of the pool on such a device? The answer was a resounding YES. By the end of the conference, we had unknowingly taken orders from three legendary U.S. Olympic swim coaches—Richard Quick, Nort Thornton and Richard Shoulberg. The great coincidence was for many years, each coach had wanted a training tool like the Vasa Trainer. By 1992, swimmers of all abilities, including many that made the U.S. Swim team, were using the Vasa Trainer for dedicated dryland workouts. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/executiveathletes/support
Join Coach Patrick from Endurance Nation (www.endurancenation.us) for another weekly endurance podcast. This week Coach P interviews Rob Sleamaker from Vasatrainer.com to learn more about the Vasa Trainer for swim training. Improving your swimming is one of the hardest parts of becoming a better triathlete -- mainly because you can't really get a sense of what your body is doing in the water. There are drills and videos, but honestly the biggest opportunity is on dry land with the Vasa Trainer. No kicking. No breathing. No dropped hips. Just you, your catch and some really solid training. The second half of this podcast is for Team Endurance Nation members only, but you still get a ton of great information. Thanks for listening to this Endurance Nation podcast. Robin has been a member of Endurance Nation since 2010 and has been on the bubble of KQ'ing for many, many races. 2016 was breakthru year for him as he finally put together the fitness and execution package to earn a Kona slot. In this episode, Rich and Robin discuss: The strengths and weaknesses of using a Vasa Trainer for swim training. The process and value of targeting a watts per kilogram goal for the Ironman bike. How producing a faster Ironman bike dramatically changes the mindset of the run. Thanks for listening to this Endurance Nation podcast.
