The shownotes are basically the podcast episode in written form, that you can read in 5-10 minutes. They are not transcriptions, but they are also not just surface-level overviews. They provide detailed insights and timestamps for each episode, and are great especially for later review, after you've already listened to an episode. Naturally, as great as they are, they do not cover absolutely everything in as great detail as we can do in a 45-90 minute podcast episode. This week on Spin Cycle: Caley, Jonny, and Ronan revisit the story of carbon monoxide use in the pro peloton, discussing Romain Bardet's ridiculously eloquent statements against its use for performance enhancement. The conversation then shifts to Red Bull's sponsorship of the Bora-Hansgrohe team and whether the team is poised to "level up" in the 2025 season after limited financial support from Red Bull in 2024. The hosts highlight the team's recent hires, Dan Bigham and Johnny Wale, as potential "backroom superstars" who could make a significant impact on the team's performance through marginal gains. The episode concludes with the news that Trinity Racing, a British Continental team, has shut down. Why didn't INEOS, a team in need of a development squad, partner with them?

From UAE Team Emirates to Uno X Mobility there are plenty of teams hoping for success at the biggest bike race of the year but who will leave the race satisfied and who will be disappointed.
Daniel Oss is the man. This long time World Tour professional raced on some of the biggest teams alongside some of the biggest names in the sport. From Liquigas to BMC to Bora-Hansgrohe to TotalEnergies, he was easy to pick out from the bunch with his rock-star long hair. He was also nearly always at the front and often pulling Peter Sagan along to victory. He's now a gravel privateer as well as a commentator for EuroSport, taking on UCI races as well as Unbound. Ted and Daniel were teammates for two years beginning in 2011 and this was a very fun catch up at a brewery in Emporia, KS a few days before Unbound.
In episode 106, I catch up with Jai Hindley, the winner of the 2022 Giro d'Italia. He is also known as the Prince of Perth. Jai and I catch up on what has been happening in his life this year, including his new contract extension with Bora-Hansgrohe. We discuss the major factors Jai considered during the negotiations and the importance of being able to race for his own results. We discuss the rumours of Boxing Day Papas being under threat and hear the big man's opinion on his favourite race of the year. We finish up with a few cracking stories, a random U23 World Time Trial jersey and Jai's 2011 recount of asking for Dave McKenzie's signature at the Tour de France. In episode 105, I catch up with Giro stage winner, SBS commentator and my good mate Dave McKenzie to discuss some hot topics ahead of this year's Giro d'Italia. Macca and I discuss the “dominance vs. entertainment” theme referring to Pogacar's likely sweep of the Giro GC and speculate about Sam Welsford's surprising exclusion from the Bora Hansgrohe team. We preview some of the exciting teams and riders to keep an eye on, and finally, I squeeze the classic story from Macca's epic solo giro stage win from the glory days.

The cycling transfers rumours and talks seem to have started much earlier for the 2025 season. There are rumours of a mass exodus of the talent at Groupama FDJ leaving with Laurence Pithie, Lenny Martinez and Romain Gregoire. Meanwhile Jasper Philipsen has been rumoured to have 4 suitors chasing him including UAE Team Emirates, Tudor Pro Cycling, Bora Hansgrohe and his current team Alpecin. And lastly Aleksandr Vlasov could be leaving Bora to head back to Astana.

In this week's regular episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe is joined by former peloton stalwart Mitch Docker and former pressroom stalwart François Thomazeau to review the first WorldTour race of the 2024 season, the Santos Tour Down Under. We discuss how Stevie Williams' thrilling overall victory represents a return from the brink for the Welsh rider - and one tinged with controversy. The other two breakout stars of the race were BORA-Hansgrohe sprinter Sam Welsford and UAE Team Emirates' 20-year-old Mexican prodigy Isaac del Toro. We investigate Del Toro's roots - and look at phenoms of yesteryear who did or didn't deliver on their early promise. There's also the usual round-up of the week's news and a look at what INEOS Grenadiers are plotting - and trying to change - in 2024. Taylor Swift, Lionel Messi, Novak Djokovic and Tom Cruise. No, that's not the new backroom staff at Manchester United. Those are the names of the global superstars that front up the entertainment choices that we all make, each and every day. So how does five hours of road racing in the rain in Flanders compete against A-listers like that?Well, in this RadioCycling special, we meet Richard Plugge, head of the world's teams organisation the AIGCP, and the hugely successful manager of the Jumbo-Visma team that won all three Grand Tours last year – but also, crucially, the man telling cycling that it must change… or it will die.In this interview, we quiz Plugge on the One Cycling project that he is adamant must be introduced in order to maintain cycling's position as a focus for popular sporting entertainment. We ask him about the accusations made by rival team managers of "poaching" and a conflict of interest after Visma-Lease A Bike's signing of Cian Uijtdebroeks from rivals Bora-Hansgrohe.Plugge also provides an update on the doping case involving the team's Michel Hessmann in which he reveals the basis of the young German racer's defence. And, of course, we ask him about the loss of his team's most emblematic rider, Primož Roglič, and hear about the constantly evolving five-year plan designed to keep the Dutch team at the top of the WorldTour pecking order. This podcast is brought to you with the support of our sponsor, Saddle Skedaddle. Johan Bruyneel and Spencer Martin of the Beyond the Peloton newsletter break down Visma-Lease a Bike's shocking signing of rising young GC superstar Cian Uijtdebroeks away from Bora-Hansgrohe, and how the ongoing battle between Visma and Bora, who still claims to have Uijtdebroeks under contract through the 2024 season, will likely play out. In this week's regular episode of The Cycling Podcast, we visit Bora-Hansgrohe at their December billet in Mallorca for an in-depth interview with the team's Head of Sports Rolf Aldag. It turned out to be a timely conversation, coming as it did hot on the heels of news that Cian Uijtdebroeks had walked out on Bora-Hansgrohe to sign for Jumbo-Visma - his agent claimed after his Bora deal had been terminated, the team said a year before it was due to expire. Here, Aldag talks to us about Uijtdebroeks' shock exit and what it could mean for Bora, the rider and the sport. We also, of course, discuss the star signing who has recently moved the other way, from Jumbo to Bora, Primož Roglič. There's much more besides – on Rolf's own career, the winning formula he helped to create at HTC High Road, Jan Ullrich's belated doping confession and Mark Cavendish's hopes of another Tour de France stage win. Both with the Men and women Kona Ironman World Champions, Grand Tour Cycling Champions, and the list goes on. He's a familiar voice to the show, having shared his insights with us back 2 years ago on, September 21st, 2021, and even before that on August 3rd, 2020. If you missed those, you really need to go back and have a listen. His episodes are some of the most downloaded and most requested of the 200+ I've recorded. He's the Head of Performance for the Bora-Hansgrohe Cycling team and the strategic genius behind the world's greatest triathletes. Under his guidance, athletes have reached pinnacle moments in their careers - we're talking about Jai Hindley, the Aussie who won the Giro d'Italia in 2022, Kona Ironman world champion, Anne Haug, who has dominated the rankings as the World's number one female triathlete for two years running, the incredible Lucy Charles-Barclay, who just shattered records at the Kona Ironman World Championships, and of course, the legend himself, 3 time Kona Ironman world champion and Olympic Gold medalist, Jan Frodeno, whose list of accomplishments could fill an entire podcast episode. The former's most decorated alumnus, Primož Roglič, is of course on his way to Bora-Hansgrohe, and their team boss, Ralph Denk tells us how he got his man.
