A message of gratitude from Ujamaa Place CEO Otis Zanders, Welcome to our Virtual Celebration & Awards 2021. Wow! Can you believe we're just days away from the start of a new year. I don't know about you, but it has me excited about new opportunities for learning, understanding, growing, and most importantly loving. Challenges were abundant in 2021, but the strides we made were greater. Bear with me while I reflect on how far we've come… I, for one, experienced some personal health challenges in 2021. While I was out on medical leave, the staff at Ujamaa Place was forced to step up and fulfill my responsibilities in addition to their own work, which was already made more difficult by the pandemic. They rose to the occasion beyond what would have been expected of anyone in these circumstances, and I am forever grateful to them for it. This experience made us stronger as an organization, and we are eager to take the lessons and understanding gained in 2021 into 2022 and broaden our unconditional love and support of the most marginalized population in society, African American men, aged 18-30. This year was not without sadness. We lost a Ujamaa brother and member of our Ujamaa Music Group, Justin Langeslay aka “Ju$$ Lyfe,” who is remembered as kind, loving, respectful and full of life. I just want to express my gratitude for you! THANK YOU for supporting Ujamaa Place over the years. We know none of this would be possible without the bold support of our community. Knowing that the community is supporting and cheering them on goes a long way for the Ujamaa Men on their transformation journey. I'm unaware of another organization in the country with culturally-centric transformative programming like Ujamaa Place. Know that you are the reason Ujamaa Place is what it is today. Because of your support of Ujamaa Place, you are forever part of the legacy of social justice and criminal justice reform, including but not limited to the re-imagination of what re-entry for formerly incarcerated individuals looks like, the implementation of alternative sentencing programs, and so much more amazing change that's on the horizon. I hope you don't take that lightly. You have helped change hearts and minds, and the world is a better place because of you. Love + Blessings, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Spring at The Lexington School is a busy time. Even in this atypical school year guided by COVID protocols, we have culminating moments and traditions that are important to our children and our community. Events like our reimagined Little Kentucky Derby and Virtual CELEBRATION are in our immediate futures and just beyond are school trips, Candlelight Ceremony, and commencement activities for our 8th graders. Meanwhile, our faculty/staff and families are juggling their lives outside of TLS as well. It's a spirited and fun time of year and the perfect time to talk about one of our most important and our most nuanced mission skills, TIME MANAGEMENT. We gathered up some fun people for the podcast to talk about time management. All of them have expertise in their own unique ways. School Counselor, Grace Newsome, second-grade teacher Sharon Deller, sixth-grade Anatomy teacher Tomi Lounsbury, and finally former student Axel Kiefer '11 and his mom, former parent and former trustee, Dr. Teresa Oropilla-Kiefer, MD are entertaining and educational. I am very grateful for their gift of time. I had a great time chatting about time management, learning some time management strategies, and sharing a few memories along the way. I hope you will make time in your day to listen to the podcast. I think it's a valuable thirty minutes-well worth your time! Ashley is currently an enneagram 7 Senior Chiropractic Intern at Life Chiropractic College West with a passion for the prenatal and pediatric chiropractic realm. She is also currently in the midst of completing her certification with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. As a proud daughter of immigrant parents, Ashley is no stranger to setting goals and working diligently to fulfill her dreams of a better tomorrow. Prior to chiropractic school, Ashley wrapped up a 10 year career in the musical, dance, and pageantry arts, where she spent the latter five years touring with independent groups all over the United States, Europe, and Taiwan. She currently serves as Student Body President for Life West's Student Council and most recently as an Exec Board member of the League of Chiropractic Women club on campus. In 2019, she and co-founder Nikki Kielkowicz created Making HERstory— an event created for all to connect, empower, and celebrate the women in chiropractic for all they have done and all the potential they have yet to reach. When she's not at school, Ashley enjoys being outdoors, reading, and getting lost in weaving and creating new macrame designs. Ashley's love of service and leadership combined with a splash of silliness and a dash of zippity pow makes her the energetic, fun-loving person she is. This year marks the 20th anniversary of H.E.A.R.T. The year began with exciting plans for a spring banquet that would involve guests from Kenya and many friends from throughout California and across the United States. But COVID-19 brought those plans to a screeching halt. In this episode of Straight from the HEART, listeners will hear highlights from HEART's first-ever Virtual Celebration that took place in September 2020. The event was hosted by HEART U.S. Board Member, Lauri Harris and HEART Ambassador, Ken Christie. Vickie was back in Kenya when this podcast was produced. Shortly after her arrival, the following text arrived: “It feels wonderful to be home again! I am always so grateful for God's blessings and His favor upon HEART. Thank you for your prayers.” https://africaheart.com/
When COVID restrictions threatened to cancel this year's Taste of the Arts Festival, its host organization, Arts United, got busy and virtually reinvented the entire celebration. Thanks to the generosity of Arcpoint Productions, the event's co-sponsor, many of the perennial activities were translated to concert-quality videos, including all of the music, dance and theater performances, which will take place on three virtual festival stages throughout the day. Restaurant Row, Artlink's Art Market and NIPSCO's STEAM Park are also making their products virtually available to festival goers. These will all be accessible from Arts United website, Facebook Live, and YouTube Live, with the ability to support participating artists directly. Meanwhile, several partner organizations have planned to host safe and socially distanced events on site in cooperation with Taste of the Arts to preserve the traditional festival flavor of the day. To learn what the event will look and sound like from this new online platform this weekend, WBOI's Julia Meek invited its technical director, Luke Holliger into the studio to discuss the scope of such a challenge, and what process his team devised to make it happen. WBOI Artcentric is brought to you by WBOI's own Julia Meek and Ben Clemmer. Our theme music is “Me voy pal campo” by KelsiCote. Our administrative assistants are Olivia Fletter and Brittany Smith. Our production assistants are Monica Blankenship and Mikaela Veltum.

Due to the persistence of Covid-19, Negocios Now announced a virtual celebration of Latinos 40 under 40. Last year's class will now be recognized on July 17, 2020, with Rémy Martin, as the main sponsor. “We can't predicate to know when we will meet again to celebrate our Latinos 40 under 40 the way we have for the past four years, but we do know that the pandemic will not stop us on our mission to recognize the most valuable of our young Latinos”, said Clemente Nicado, Publisher of Negocios Now. As part of the celebration, Rémy Martin will be hosting a short demonstration so that everyone can make the perfect cocktail. The Latinos 40 Under 40 event was originally scheduled for March 26th, 2020, but was postponed by Nicado Publishing earlier that month due to the safety of all participants. “We hope that all 40 awardees can join our virtual celebration on July 17th and allow us to express how proud we are of their leadership and of being part of our fifth edition of Latinos 40 under 40 in Chicago”, said Nicado. The hour-long event will begin at 5:30 pm CST. It will be hosted by Ana Belaval, a reporter for the WGN Morning News and three-time Emmy Award winner. Since the beginning of the 40 Under 40 event, Rémy Martin has been a dedicated sponsor for the special edition in digital format and the in-person celebration. This year it also has the support of Wintrust, ComEd, BMO, Monterrey Security, Hispanic Star, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Accenture, a Fortune Global 500 company, has also recently joined as a sponsor of the virtual celebration. All 40 young people will be receiving an award from Negocios Now during the live event. The ceremony will also feature the awarding of three special prizes to the Rising Star, Youngest Latino, and the Leader of the Pack. Also, Rémy Martin will be awarding a special award to one female and one male candidate. These candidates display exemplary roles in their commitments to the community. A toast to all 40 under 40!
