Chris Winter's path to becoming a world-renowned sleep doctor began when he was a child. When the power went out in a blizzard and he and his family were huddled up in sleeping bags around their stove, he wondered, “Does everyone like to sleep as much as me?” Fast forward 20 or so years and Chris was studying at the University of Virginia, wondering what branch of medicine to specialize in. A biology credit advisor suggested that he help out a sleep specialist, Paul Serratt. One day, Chris said, “It'd be cool to study how sleep affects athletes.” His mentor replied, “Chris, this is the best thing about it – anything you can think about with sleep research hasn't been done yet.” Just like that, Chris decided what he wanted to do with his career. During his first year of practice,Chris heard that the Montreal Expos were playing half their games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and realized this would be the perfect opportunity to study how jet lag and circadian rhythm disruption impacts sports performance. This kicked off what would become one of the largest sleep studies of pro athletes, with Chris compiling data from more than 22,000 MLB games over nine years. The San Francisco Giants saw a news report quoting Chris when he presented his research and hired him as a consultant, and soon afterward the Oklahoma City Thunder did likewise. He has since worked with the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Charlotte Hornets, and Washington Wizards, as well as the Washington Mystics in the WNBA.In this episode, Chris shares:What you can do to sleep longer and better without medicationHow sleep improves physical performance and emotional wellbeingWhy sleep is a secret weapon that helps NBA veterans stay in the league and young players make the cutHow travel gives one team a circadian advantage and what that means for when you cross time zonesWhat coaches, physical therapists, and other practitioners can do to improve their athletes' sleepLearn more from Chris by reading his books The Sleep Solution and The Rested Child, and by following him on Twitter @drchriswinter

Our Great Coach on this episode is NBA coach Jenny Boucek. Jenny is a former WNBA player, Assistant Coach and Head Coach. The first person to hold all 3 roles in the league's history. She began her coaching career in the WNBA during the 1999 season as an assistant with the Washington Mystics. In 2000, she joined the Miami Sol, also as an assistant coach, for three seasons. Jenny was an Assistant Coach with the Seattle Storm when they won the WNBA Championship in 2004 and 2010 and the Head Coach for the Sacramento Monarchs and Seattle Storm. In 2017 Jenny became the player development coach for the Sacramento Kings, becoming the third female assistant coach in NBA history. In 2018 she became an Assistant Coach for the Dallas Mavericks and since this interview was originally released, Jenny was named an assistant coach of the Indiana Pacers in July, 2021. Jenny is a coach with a deep sense of purpose, and belief in the power of intrinsic motivation to drive you to become the best version of yourself. Her career is a study in perseverance and risk that has resulted in redefining paradigms. She is self-reflective, empathetic and focused on helping those in her circle of influence become, in her words, a better me for a better we. This was a wonderful conversation, with a coach who transcends what it means to lead in both elite mens and womens competitions, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Two-time MVP Elena Delle Donne is considered one of the best to ever play in the WNBA. In 2019, she led the Washington Mystics to their first WNBA championship in franchise history. Playing through three herniated discs, a broken nose and a knee injury, Delle Donne managed to dominate in the winner-takes-all Game 5 putting up 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. “I was given all the warnings. I was told, like, this isn't the greatest way to go about this,” Delle Donne told In the Moment's David Greene, “but I wasn't gonna listen.” Delle Donne's decision to ignore warnings from team doctors and play through her injuries helped the Mystics cement the win. She credits her mindset about playing through the pain to her older sister, Lizzie, who has cerebral palsy and was born deaf and blind. “The things she has to overcome is way more than any of the pain that I had to deal with in Game 5,” Delle Donne said. In The Moment's David Greene sat down with Delle Donne at the Mystics practice facility in Washington, D.C. to discuss that game and how her close relationship with her sister helped shape her uncommon career path in the WNBA.
