We're starting the first of 2 planned capsules where we revisit a favorite show that one of us hasn't seen. First up, it's Jay's favorite TV show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Every other week we're going to talk through 2 episodes from a fan perspective (Jay) and a newbie perspective (MJ).

In the second part of our discussion about Welcome To The Hellmouth, we rejoin the action in the Master's lair, where the vampires of Sunnydale are plotting something sinister. We also meet a mysterious new character and marvel at the Master's impressive velcro sleeves! Meanwhile Buffy's new friends Xander and Willow learn that she's more than just the average new kid at school, and we see the development of the Slayer/Watcher dynamic between her and Giles. Welcome to the hellmouth, slayers! This is our introductory episode for a long haul of a series -- we got seven seasons ahead of us! In this episode we're talking all about the series premiere for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. What even is a slayer? Is the new girl boinking the librarian? When did Epstein-Barr become uncool?

Will take place during Season 7's Empty Places. Buffy makes a wish that has disastrous consequences. She wishes that she never changed out of being a vampire from Billy Palmer's dream. That it will become real and forever with no spell to end it so she can't feel anything for anyone because they kicked her out and didn't want her, the real HER. Well, it becomes true and she is sucked into Season 1 and after they save Billy (AGAIN), Buffy remains a creature of the night. With a soul, she shuns the Scoobies by talking to the Master eventually becoming his favorite childe and receiving special treatments more than the Scoobies ever gave her. She enjoys being a vampire very well and is quite good at it, choosing to be evil rather than the soul forcing her. She has no curse to stop her unlike Angel. The Master is left unstaked and takes Sunnydale along with Buffy who finds herself interested in Spike. Growing up one of my all time favorite shows was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We called it "appointment television". I was spending time queuing up my VCR so I could record each episode. I'm joined by my childhood friends Mikey and Charles who are also super fans. We decided to space out our chats about the seasons since we wanted to give it a proper rewatch. So expect a Season 2 deep dive soon. For now we just give a starter episode into the world of Buffy, the eventual Scooby gang, and Sunnydale. Enjoy! ⚰️

Buffy the Vampire Slayer debuted in the spring of 1997 with two back-to-back episodes: Welcome to the Hellmouth and The Harvest. In addition to introducing viewers to a new version of Buffy, her Scooby Gang, and the season's Big Bad, their overarching story also established one of the series' core conflicts: our heroine's responsibilities as the slayer and how those clash with her desire to live a more normal life. Kristen & Mike kick things off with a discussion about how they discovered the show and why they love it so much. They also touch on Buffy's origins as a feature film and the unaired pilot that preceded the series. Then it's time to dive deep into these episodes and see if season one is really as bad as a lot of the fans remember it. There's no question that the show was still trying to find its footing at this stage, so it's interesting to see shades of where it was headed and make note of which elements were ultimately sidelined altogether.
