It had been a while since we explored the classics and this certainly is nothing short of a perfect film. There are so many moments that will remain in my head forever and I've never seen acting like this in my life. This being my first Liz Taylor and Richard Burton film, I was beyond transfixed. With just a four person cast, there are so many ebbs and flows and the story structure and verbage throughout was was just insane in the best way,Off-Topic rants include: other casting possibilities, Kirsten Dunst, the Simpsons, and dramatic readings throughout---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Ahh, the 90s. Such a perfect time for the erotic thriller genre. It only felt right to pay homage to one of the greats, James Spader. I stumbled across this one from deep in the vault and I'm glad to experience Dream Lover from 1993. I get into the mystery of why this wasn't a box office hit, the minimalist fashion, and bitch about why they just can't make 'em like this anymore. ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Granted yes culture and humor have shifted as they do when time passes, but man there are some hidden film gems to uncover. That leads me to Saved!, probably one of the funniest and darkest comedies with just an incredible all-star cast. Me and Mikey talk about how the script is just filled with incredible one-liners and hilarious sequences. There is nothing more perfect than an out of control evangelical Mandy Moore on this never ending crusade to save everyone and a delightfully devious Macaulay Culkin. Yes, this is our last foray into the 'Dark Side of the 90s' Vice series. In keeping with the total and complete theme of FG itself, we just had to talk more about the birth of the Seattle sound and Sub-Pop records. This episode focuses more on the independent label scene and just how corporations really tried to ruin everything. I'm ashamed to say that this is my first watch of Bring it On. The upside to this is that I loved it and I'm pissed I didn't see it the first go round. What a doozy of a movie to get back to our regularly scheduled programming here on the pod. For this episode we are talking the plot hole ridden and badly acted film from 2000, The In Crowd. Going into the video rental shop and seeing a cover with one of your favorite actors and just taking a whim on a new film. That's exactly how I discovered Pieces of April from 2003. Starring Katie Holmes who we all loved from Dawson's Creek, and with Patricia Clarkson playing her mother it immediately caught my attention. Basically this episode was a reason for me to listen to the 'brat' album and talk to Jules about my hot takes on Chappell Roan and the current pop scene. I always float in and out of current music offerings. On this episode we get into our favorite tracks of the moment, the Taylor Swift of it all and her shadow over pop, being confused about Sabrina Carpenter, reminisce on the sleaze pop dance of the 2010s (Sky Ferreira, MIA, Santigold, La Roux, Robyn, etc..), and touch on the travesty on the erasure of culture in the form of MTV News.
It's time to dust off the gritty 90s VHS archives for an honest and gut wrenching film about growing up in NYC, discovering your queer identity, and the complexities of female relationships. Jules is along for this episode where we talk 'All Over Me' from 1997. I first rented this in high school and it has been on my list to watch again. This film grew on us as we compared to other films of the time that feel more like a documentary and a visual portrait. But what about potential amazing things? Alan calls these lottery tickets! He experienced this when the Nets moved to Brooklyn, and each of his properties there appreciated $1 million right away. The 2nd essential skill is being persistent, it is simple but not easy. You're always needing to follow up, with realtors, lenders, tenants, contractors, cleaners, etc. And the 3rd essential skill is to have a long-term focus. Know your long-term goal and hold on to it. Chris points out that part of this is delayed gratification. Chris adds that you need to be comfortable taking on risk. Lauren says you need to be confident. Alan says real estate over football. Sponsored by: Jasmine Mortgage Team https://www.jasminemortgageteam.com/ Real Estate Is Easy Interview Lauren interviews Paul, a project manager and sales representative for a couple of different roofing companies in Florida. He's currently working for Armored Roofing and Solar in the Tampa Bay Area, but they are also statewide in Florida. Lauren asked Paul what happens to their business when a big storm comes through, he shared that the typical 3 to 4 weeks replacement that they do would go up to 3 to 4 months. This is because of manpower, insurance companies, and supply. Paul details the longevity of roofs with the caveat that insurance companies have a lot of say here in Florida. He recommends getting a free inspection yearly and maintenance, which can extend the life of our roofs. Lauren also asked Paul how many different kinds of roofs are there and he answered asphalt shingle roof, tile, metal, galvalume, and rolled roofing for flat roofs. Lauren asked about the price difference between shingle, metal, and tile roofs for an 1800-square-foot single-family home. Paul shared that new investors or homeowners should look for a good inspector and know when the last roof permit was puller. For us to be a good partner with our roofer, we should know how to communicate well with them. Paul makes real estate easy by making himself available. The hosts agree to that because being available makes you respond quickly and can make the job easy. Contact Paul: 727-688-1668 Guest Host Segment Guest Host Chris talks about an issue he experienced when he waived an inspection. In 2020, he did not do an inspection of his new property and after a while, there was a problem encountered with the new property. The furnace basically could not be serviced. There was a recall, and it needed to be replaced. Your hosts share their insights about the issue and give advice about it. Or otherwise known as one of the darkest, most fucked up, brilliant show from the early 00s called Nip/Tuck. At first anything around surgery was like a definite no but in college I got sucked in.Me and Mikey are suckers for shows like this and loved going back to just the pilot episode. We try to keep it pretty spoiler free in case you haven't seen the show but OMG. We get into Kimber's introduction, why we are annoyed with Julia, how Sean is such a bore in the start, Matt being like a red flag, and Christian continuing to be best part of the show.

I wasn't sure what film to do so again I asked Charles for another suggestion. I have no idea what I did to deserve this because I literally sat cowering in fear in broad daylight watching this. Not only did it build masterful tension and take me on a journey I couldn't expect, but it broke barriers with an all female cast creating a horror film through spelunking and cave exploration.Me and Charles get into why we are immediately reminded of Blair Witch and Buffy throughout, how you can't trust anyone, and why you should also always have a backup map in case someone kicks in a river or leaves it in a CAR.---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Finally I've stepped into the world of David Cronenberg films. It really is fitting that the first one I see and review is Crash from 1996. It was both me and Charles' first watch and we were enthralled. The exploration of subcultures I always find fascinating and this certain was that. We talk about the physical reactions to car crashes, how James Spader is THAT one, and constantly remind you that it's not the same film as that abomination that won Best Picture in 2004. off-topic rants include: who we would like to see in the film now, Christopher Meloni, Coen films, the history of NC-17 movies--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! This was a first watch for both me and Jules. Objectively it's no Oscar winner but when you see it for what it is, there was something there. The casting was incredible and Tara Reid basically stole the show. We get into the realistic fashion, so many quotes we loved, a real-time deep dive on the director (eek), and just how this story was unbelievable and infuriating at times.Off-topic rants include: ghost rom-com casting, 'losing your V card' as a movie genre, our first musician crushes--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! I have never seen this movie (can you believe it?) so Charles suggested it for July 4th this year! I loved this movie for so many reasons but basically the willingness of these townspeople to ignore warnings of a Great White shark that has killed multiple people at this very beach is alarming. We get into so many details we loved about the story including: the evil Mayor of the town, Hooper being super stylish, and an interesting FMK of our main characters.off-topic rants but not really include many stories and stats about sharks, megalodons, and why the sea shouldn't be trifled with---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Some considerable time has passed since we last explored the 'movie of the week' genre on the podcast. Luckily, if we ever run out of 90s films to talk about, there are literally thousands to pull from. This is one that has really stuck with me since I was a teenager. I remember taping this from tv and cutting the commercials out so I could watch it back uninterrupted. Out of all of the films, this particular one I watched ALL the time. I got Charles on this episode who knew nothing about it to watch it for the episode. While you think it may be a more lighthearted tale of a girl who leaves home, that is most definitely not the whole story. It gets pretty dark when this teenager is coping with how to survive on the streets with her 19 year old (eek) boyfriend/partner in crime. We talk the ins and outs of the story and just how much happens to them along the way, the holes in the story, and why we wish there was a more detailed ending to this tale. What a way to welcome the New Year. Excess Baggage is a film from 1997 that almost takes you there but then falls short overall. The casting honestly saved this whole project but it really puts into perspective the importance of a tight story and seamless collaboration. This film was riddled with re-writes and re-shoots which is typically not a good sign, however watching for the charm and nostalgia factor really made up for it. Me and Mikey spent this episode pointing out the story holes, the drama on set during filming, and I drool over Benicia Del Toro. Well, we're here. Yes I had to talk about Saltburn, the recent release by Emerald Fennell. I can't remember a time where I've seen a film twice in the theater within a week. There was just something that grabbed me from the first trailer viewing that I knew I had to see this on the big screen. Because I haven't shut up about it over the past three weeks I had to enlist both Charles and Mikey that I saw it with on two different occasions for this special episode. We talk about some crazy story points, the wild reactions to several scenes, and how I now worship at the altar of Barry Keoghan. *first on Patreon ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! It's not officially the Christmas season without a rewatch of the 90s classic, Home Alone. I have some residual trauma around this film from when I was kid and I only now as an adult really see the true chaotic and terrifying nature of it all. Girl Power! No, really! You know we couldn't talk about the 90s without mentioning the glue that held us all together, the Spice Girls. In keeping with our 'domestic drama' theme we wandered into by accident, we're talking Reversal of Fortune from 1990. Based on the true story and legal case of Claus von Bülow told through the eyes of his lawyer Alan Dershowitz. This was Charles' pick and from my glance of this trailer I thought I was in for an erotic thriller of epic proportions but turns out it was a legal drama of all legal dramas. Although, anything with Jeremy Irons and Glenn Close is immediately intriguing. At this point I would watch them both read the phone book in a poorly lit room. We get into some of our favorite fashion looks (there were MANY), the magic of Christine Baranski, more reasons to love Jeremy Irons, and a mini Oscars rage moment that Glenn Close wasn't nominated. We also have cemented this as a Christmas movie.

Groovy baby, yeah! Yes, even I can't believe there are movies that we haven't talked about yet and we're over 150 episodes in. This is another example of just that. Austin Powers is a comfort film for me that I didn't' realize until I started this review. The soundtrack has been burned into my brain for years as I used to play it to fall asleep throughout my mid teens. Me and Mikey reviewed this one and it was laughs all the way through! We were instantly enthralled by the amazing visuals and world that Sofia creates around her characters so well. There is no format for this one so enjoy this random chat covering the film, the Lana Del Rey of it all, how we're so intrigued by Priscilla, Elvis being a weirdo, and more!

It popped into my head and I was sure that Jai would be up to do an episode on it. Much to my surprise this was her first time watching and this was probably my second or third watch. This film is an incredible true story of a 13 year old girl Christiane F. taking place in mid 70s West Berlin. I was so focused on the performances and depictions of drug abuse and the desperation of youth at that time. In contrast the acting feels so raw and real as if you're watching a documentary. We found a copy on YouTube and it's one of those films you have to see to believe. Some points we mentioned are the facts of the real Christiane F., a 2016 Gucci campaign "inspired" by this story, and the musical factor of having this story set to David Bowie songs.---GIVE US A 5 STAR RATING & SUBSCRIBE to the main Fashion Grunge Podcast feed on (mostly) 90s films!Hosts: Lauren @lauren_melanie & Jai @jai_stylefactoryFollow Fashion Grunge PodcastSubstack The Lo Down: a Fashion Grunge blog/newsletter Instagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod
