Send us a textIn 1997, Mike Myers unleashed Austin Powers onto the world. Playing the title role and Dr. Evil, this film also introduced us to Fembots, Alotta Fagina, Frau Farbissina, and a host of other classic characters. Even more than the characters were the lines however. Yeah baby! Do I make you horny?! Oh behave! The film indeed left a memorable mark on comedy. As it is also a James Bond spy spoof at it's core, we also draft the best spy gadgets and equipment from TV and film. Put on your x ray glasses and live dangerously with us. Hello, we've waited for you! Ryan, Louie & Al discuss the classic Foo Fighters anthem "Everlong" and its dreamy music video!
What truly matters when we reach the end of our lives? Jesse Cope tackles this profound question, reflecting on how those taking their final breaths rarely wish for more wealth or possessions—instead longing for more time with loved ones. This perspective sets the stage for a deeply relevant examination of our priorities as individuals and as a nation.Drawing from historical documents, Jesse reveals compelling evidence of America's Christian foundation. A groundbreaking 1984 study analyzing 15,000 founding-era documents found that 34% of quotes from America's founders came directly from the Bible—far outpacing references to enlightenment philosophers. This research fundamentally challenges the narrative that America was founded as a secular nation, demonstrating how biblical principles shaped our founding documents and political philosophy. The episode explores Abraham Lincoln's powerful address to Congress at the start of the Civil War, highlighting his call to "renew our trust in God and go forward without fear and with manly hearts." This historical example serves both as inspiration and warning—showing how previous generations navigated national crises through faith while reminding us that abandoning our spiritual heritage carries profound consequences.Jesse doesn't just present problems but offers practical solutions, encouraging simple daily spiritual practices anyone can implement. Even just a few minutes reading scripture or offering prayers of thanksgiving throughout the day can transform our relationship with God and, by extension, our communities and country.Perhaps most powerfully, the episode concludes with Daniel Webster's sobering warning that neglecting biblical principles could bring a "sudden catastrophe" that would "bury all our glory in profound obscurity." This stark reminder emphasizes what's at stake in our cultural moment and calls listeners to reconsider their role in America's spiritual revival.Ready to discover how returning to our founding principles could transform your life and our nation? Listen now, share with others who need this message, and join the movement to restore America's soul through renewed faith and commitment to timeless truths.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

Today on the 5: Thanks to a listener recommendation, I watched a 1997 spy thriller titled The Assignment. I enjoyed it quite a bit more than the other film of that year centered around the same idea, although the opening 10 minutes or so are a bit deceptive in terms of how the rest of the movie operates.
Emilio, Madeline, and Julian continue their "Politics" episode cycle with a "Mise-Unseen" entry on Barry Levinson's 1997 film "Wag the Dog," and are joined to do so by special guest Idris Goodwin - a playwright, educator, fellow cinephile, and significant role model from Emilio's Chicago upbringing. The group get into the movie by discussing its place in the canon of mid-budget 90s studio films, as well as in the greater careers of its heavy-hitting stars, Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman. Looking more broadly, they also consider the category of satire that "Wag the Dog" falls into, and of course its famously prescient view on the handling of political scandals, and eerily good timing in doing so. Idris Goodwin is currently the Artistic Director at the Seattle Children's Theatre, and Board President of TYAUSA, a member organization committed to live theater in the lives of children everywhere. Todd McFarlane's Spawn was a huge comic and toy line in the 90's. It only made sense that they would make a live action film. What we got was an over the top CGI special effects fest that's more concerned with being cool than telling a story. Despite that it is oddly faithful to the comics and has a lot deep cut references to the source material. See what we had to say in this episode.

Let's be honest, 1997 wasn't our favorite year due to a trio of horrible deaths, songs like “MMMBop” ruling the radio, and George Lucas unleashing Greedo shooting first upon the theater-going public. But that doesn't mean the Neo Geo games of that year weren't awesome! We assemble our 4 slot with a duo of puzzle games in Money Puzzle Exchanger and Magical Drop 3, the return of another samurai fighter in The Last Blade, and the run ‘n gun stylings of Shock Troopers. Did we purposely plan our Neo Geo 1997 episode to come out within hours of the last episode of the first season of X-Men 97? Why can't Jarrod quit puzzle games? Why can't Rob quit samurai fighting games? Does this episode contain more mispronounced Japanese names than all other episodes combined? “My grandma always said, ‘Family pulling together in times of need will make it strong.'”The Family That Eats Together: A Discussion of Soul FoodBefore Soul Food hit theaters in 1997, writer and director George Tillman Jr. struggled to get his first feature film made. After selling the script, the production company went under before filming began. Undeterred, Tillman persevered and found new backing from Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and his wife Tracey. Their shared vision brought Tillman's semi-autobiographical story to life. Soul Food went on to become a breakout hit, launching Tillman's career and sparking an ongoing debate about family, culture, and tradition.Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 1998 NAACP Image Awards Outstanding Lead Actress in a Motion Picture Nominees series with a conversation about Tillman Jr.'s 1997 film Soul Food.Digging into Family, Food, and ForgivenessIn our lively discussion, we dig into the joys and tensions of the Joseph family's Sunday dinners. We're divided on the effectiveness of young Ahmad's voiceover narration as a narrative device. The family relationships feel authentic, with standout performances from the actresses playing the three sisters – Vanessa Williams, Vivica A. Fox, and Nia Long. However, we take issue with some of the easy storytelling choices, especially regarding Lem's return to prison. The “fairy tale” ending strains believability more for Andy than Pete, but it does raise thought-provoking questions about the role of food and togetherness in absolving past wrongs.More Food for ThoughtAppreciating the film's universal messages about family bondsMama's troubling role in cultivating the family's unhealthy dietBrandon Hammond's sweet portrayal of young AhmadMichael Beach excelling with an interesting roleDirector George Tillman Jr.'s growth between this film and The Hate U GiveBringing Families TogetherSoul Food succeeds in celebrating the aspirational joy of gathering family around the table. While we question some of the storytelling choices, the performances draw us into the sprawling Joseph family. Throughout our conversation, we find plenty to chew on, from fairy tale endings to the competing pulls of past and future. It makes for a nourishing discussion worth tuning in to. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. “Let's be realistic. Now, sooner or later, they're going to get around to offering me a plea deal, and you know that. That's why you are here to kill me.”Jackie Brown Rides High in Tarantino's Homage to BlaxploitationQuentin Tarantino burst onto the film scene in the 1990s with unique stylistic choices and sharp dialogue. After achieving critical acclaim for Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, Tarantino turned to Elmore Leonard's novel Rum Punch for his third directorial effort, Jackie Brown. Set in the seedy underworld of gun runners and bail bondsmen, Jackie Brown pays homage to 1970s blaxploitation films while putting Tarantino's signature spin on the crime thriller genre.Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our 1998 NAACP Image Awards Outstanding Lead Actress in a Motion Picture Nominees series with a conversation about Tarantino's 1997 film Jackie Brown.Fun With Time, Great Performances, and ControversyWe dive deep into Tarantino's playful use of time jumps, split screens, and flashbacks to reveal the intricacies of the heist plot. The stellar cast shines, especially Pam Grier in the title role and Robert Forster as the bail bondsman helping her out, not to mention turns by Robert De Niro, Samuel L. Jackson, Bridget Fonda, and Michael Keaton. We also touch on the controversy around Tarantino's use of the N-word. Overall, we find lots to love in this homage-filled film.More Topics From Our ChatBeautiful cinematography and lighting choicesForster and Grier's heartbreaking final sceneKeaton's surprising but perfect castingThe fantastic soundtrackTarantino's masterful directing skills on displayGreat discussion of awards snubs and box office numbersFinal Thoughts on Jackie BrownWith its loving homage to 1970s blaxploitation films, great soundtrack, and stellar cast, Jackie Brown shows Tarantino at the height of his powers.
