At the intersection of fashion + nostalgia. We scratch the surface and sometimes deep dive into (mostly) 90s 'underground' film, music genres, fashion, and explore all the visuals in between.

Charles is back on the pod! And what better way then to talk about one of the most revolutionary films of the 90s, Jury Duty starring Pauly Shore. It's been a while since our Son in Law episode so we talk again about how Pauly Shore is a goddamn national treasure. Ahh, the 90s. Such a perfect time for the erotic thriller genre. It only felt right to pay homage to one of the greats, James Spader. I stumbled across this one from deep in the vault and I'm glad to experience Dream Lover from 1993. This is one of those 90s movies that really shouldn't have been made. Lucky for you that it was so bad that we still ended up having plenty to say about it. Mikey had the unfortunate experience of seeing this in the theater, but in 1997 we were really spoiled for choice at the cinema each week. It's movies like this that make me love the 90s. The ability to make multi genre horror thrillers with a domestic medical drama and demon afterlife subplot is unmatched. I was searching for something to review in October and this has been on my list forever, mostly for the stacked cast. I went in knowing nothing and this was nothing short of a wild ride. Mascis is great at composing a movie score, and how I loved the end of this story.Off-topic rants include: fashion and music categorization and why you can think of me as the clerk behind the video rental counter ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! What a ride this season has been. Thankfully we have all lived through the reunion that left much to be desired. I talk about what they should do next year for the reunion, what I wish happened, and why we really needed Jana to read that whole receipt transcript paper. So fun to be on this crazy journey recapping this show..until next summer I'm leaving the villa with my suitcase and water bottle!
REMIX!!! Yes, it's time for another trip down nostalgia lane to one of the foundational films of my youth, The Craft. This time I have a special guest along for this journey, Jesse Chambliss of Jesse's Girls Podcast! We start with our deep connection to the film and why he chose this particular throwback. There are behind the scenes discoveries, deleted scenes and the "magic" of this cast being so perfect for this project. Also, a long extensive fashion section discussing the incredible versatility of Fairuza Balk's hair and makeup throughout, deconstructing the Catholic uniform, and the incredible 1997 MTV Movie Awards acceptance speech for 'Best Fight'."Well, then understand this: whatever you send out you get back times three."---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! It was the thing you could only dream about, to revisit one of your teen idols crushes from back in the day. This happens to be a different circumstance because the crush flame has been burning bright for at least 20+ years. Since Josh Hartnett wandered into the mainstream (yes he has been working) last year with a part in Oppenheimer and this year in Trap, I had to get Samantha of @lovefool.99 back on the pod to talk one of our favorite actors. We both were so excited to talk recent moments of this press tour, our thoughts on Trap, run through his filmography, and of course get into the reason for his 'infamous' 90s haircut. Because this is seen as one of the classic horror films, I had to review it for the pod during spooky season. Now, some of you may be shocked but I didn't like this as much as everyone else does. Thankfully this makes for an interesting episode and by the end I started to come around a bit. This is one of Jai's faves so it's great to have both ends of the spectrum when it comes to this review. Also, this is a FASHION movie. I couldn't write down the outfits that I loved fast enough. There are numerous looks that comprise the 60s aesthetic to a tee. The cinematography, locations, and the MANY behind the scenes deets we found were our standouts.*first on Patreon October 30, 2023---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! What a doozy of a movie to get back to our regularly scheduled programming here on the pod. For this episode we are talking the plot hole ridden and badly acted film from 2000, The In Crowd. Now, the late 90s and early 00s are riddled with films that you can't even believe were made or 'direct to video' movies and sequels before the dawn of streaming where they would have inevitably landed today, Me and Mikey are here to talk our complicated feelings on this film. We do a dream casting as we would have done it, the literal madness when it comes to this story, and the few moments of levity we were able to find. Off-topic rants: our other fav late 90s teen thrillers, why Katie Holmes and Kirsten Dunst would have saved this
Yes, it's time for a wrap up episode on this amazing Love Island USA season. It's been a wild ride and the top 3 were really the 'Big 3'. I chat about the final dates sprinkled with some gossip I've seen since the show wrapped. Including Leah's interview on 'Call Her Daddy' podcast and I talk about what I want to see answered at the upcoming reunion. ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Yeah, that's right. Your faves (me and Jai) are back to talk about the chaos that seems to be unfolding in the fashion industry. We talk 'Where in the World is John Galliano?, the crazy amount of musical chairs and creative director vacancies at multiple fashion houses, whether or not Chanel can inject modernity in the future, Gucci sales down, and we break down the Lyst of Top 20 Brands in Q2 2024.Lyst article: https://www.lyst.com/the-lyst-index/2024/q2/---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Going into the video rental shop and seeing a cover with one of your favorite actors and just taking a whim on a new film. That's exactly how I discovered Pieces of April from 2003. Starring Katie Holmes who we all loved from Dawson's Creek, and with Patricia Clarkson playing her mother it immediately caught my attention. With a shoe string budget the story and incredible acting takes such a simple story of family dynamics over a holiday weekend and it spins into such a great story and film to watch this season. Me and Mikey talk about our first time watch (we think?), being shocked this was the only time Patricia Clarkson was nominated for an Oscar, and talk all about how great 'baddie' Katie Holmes looks. We're almost at the end of our summer journey in Love Island land. It's been so fun and I've loved recapping this season. I get into the heart rate challenge, Jana and Kenny hideaway (finally), and how this is probably my fave top 4 ever (minus Kendall and Nicole). Wooo! I'm really tired of every year seeing my girls in the villa get washed by these boys during the 'Casa Amor' segment of Love Island. That's right, I'm here talking the last week of LI USA and boy is there a lot to cover. Some things I touch on: Kendall being a snake, Leah still winning me over, we ride at dawn for Jana, Aaron and Rob literally being the couple of the season, and how I can't wait for Serena to turn Kordell inside out on the next episode.
It's July 4th and it's beyond me that we haven't covered the 90s patriotic classic, Independence Day until now. Never fear, I'm here with Dustin from @therewatchrecap to get into it. This movie meant so much to us growing up and we talk about our long history with it, the sequel that I regrettably saw in theaters, how this casting is perfect (ahem Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch), and reminisce about the best movie President we've ever had. Off-topic rants: the state of Hollywood and the film industry, Judd Hirsch memories, more 90s nostalgia Ethan Hawke on Independence Day"Let's kick the tires and light the fires, big daddy!"
Basically this episode was a reason for me to listen to the 'brat' album and talk to Jules about my hot takes on Chappell Roan and the current pop scene. I always float in and out of current music offerings. On this episode we get into our favorite tracks of the moment, the Taylor Swift of it all and her shadow over pop, being confused about Sabrina Carpenter, reminisce on the sleaze pop dance of the 2010s (Sky Ferreira, MIA, Santigold, La Roux, Robyn, etc..), and touch on the travesty on the erasure of culture in the form of MTV News.
As you have learned from my last interview episode, I'm a big Love Island fan. Even if only a small group of people listen, it will all be worth it for me to get my thoughts out on this show I've been watching for the past 5 years. This is the first of my recaps of this current season (6) of the USA version of this night soap/ dating show. At the start I get into my history with how I started watching the show, my favorite moments of the UK series, and how I currently feel about what's (not) going on in the UK villa right now. On eps 15-16 I get into the aftermath of that Rob and Leah bust up, Liv being necessary to the story, and why I need Miguel and Rob to face off in this villa. Although 'Casa Amor' is around the corner so all of this could mean nothing because SO much happens day to day. 'Don't mug me off' and keep up with the rest of my episodes every Saturday for the rest of the US season!---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! It's time to dust off the gritty 90s VHS archives for an honest and gut wrenching film about growing up in NYC, discovering your queer identity, and the complexities of female relationships. Jules is along for this episode where we talk 'All Over Me' from 1997. I first rented this in high school and it has been on my list to watch again. This film grew on us as we compared to other films of the time that feel more like a documentary and a visual portrait. The soundtrack was completely up our alley with bands like Babes in Toyland, Helium, and Patti Smith. The fashion was so realistic and inspires today, we read some Letterboxd reviews, and discuss other intense female friendships on film that we enjoy.Watch the film on Youtube: https://youtu.be/OmfqcIlvd5w?si=xo1q0X8uFDy5agx8---Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! We're here and back with one of the best films of the 90s, To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar It's Pride month and it was beyond time for us to review it here and who better than Mikey to talk about the long lasting legacy this film has had over the past 30 years. There are so many things that have changed and moved forward but there is still more to be done. We talk a lot about the incredible characters and arcs throughout, how this is one of Mikey's foundational films, the FASHION and BODY, the endless cameos, and how quotable this entire script is. While I know The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert isn't the same film but since they were released within a year of each other we compare and contrast, and explain why they should be seen as a 'double feature'.Off-topic rants include: why we need a costume museum, why we need a spin off series of Noxeema and Clara, LOTR/The Hobbit movie seriesMentioned: Trixie Mattel on Reacts To Wong Foo To Wong Foo Stage Production Trailer---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon!
