The conversation begins with a prayer and a reflection on the importance of community. The speaker shares a personal story about running out of sauce at a restaurant and relates it to the theme of community. He then introduces the scripture passage for the night, Luke chapter 10, and mentions that the next week's lesson will be brought by someone else. The speaker asks the audience to turn to their neighbors and greet them. He emphasizes the value of community and the importance of each individual's presence. The speaker then shares a personal story about getting lost as a child and relates it to the parable of the lost sheep. He asks the audience to reflect on who their enemy is and shares his own experience of anger towards someone who caused harm to his family. The speaker then delves into the parable of the Good Samaritan and explains the historical context of the Samaritans and their relationship with the Jews. He highlights the discomfort and compassion shown by the Samaritan in the story and relates it to the concept of grace. The speaker encourages the audience to be spaces of grace and to love their enemies. He concludes with a prayer and a call to worship. Despite hating things in masks, I love Cirque de Soliel shows. I love the acrobatics, the musical score, the animation and effects--and I especially enjoy walking into the dimly lit theater as I observe the set and the character that "warms up" the crowd before the show actually begins. These elements set the stage for the anticipation of the actual show! Similarly, when we worship God, we get to experience His power, His sovereignty, His provision, His holiness and so much more as we enter into the presence of the Holy Spirit with shouts of praise and thanksgiving. But this is not always easy, and there are times and seasons in life where we might be struggling to praise God and offer shouts of thanksgiving. Since we know music can evoke powerful emotions in our souls, sometimes we want to "turn off" the emotion that draws us closer to God and stay in to the cave of confusion or den of despair. But during a Holy Spirit moment, I was convicted that if I chose to "fight like hell" to overcome this season by wondering, worrying, and wallowing, I was only playing into the enemy's schemes. As the accuser, satan wants me to stay stuck and "lay by the pool" for years and years--but thankfully Jesus appears on the scene and asks the invalid--"Do you want to get well?" It's a choice! It's a decision. We can fight like heaven and stop making excuses and take action or we can continue to lay by the side of the pool. Which will you choose? A few months ago, there was a suggestion from within the Florida United Methodist Conference to encourage meditative worship as a way to continue to keep our congregations safe. However, this prompts the question, "what is meditative worship?" and as we prepare to have in-person worship this Sunday, November 8th, it feels like a perfect time to answer it. Many times we forget that once someone gets saved, that they will still need support. Most times it seems as though the ones who helped the person get saved drop off the fave of the map for them; so how are they going to know more than okay I am saved and follow Jesus Christ....SUPPORT!
