192 - 5 Clues Wealth May be Weighing Down your Faith & 4 Steps to Help - 'Refreshed Replay'

Change For Your Dollar with John Putnam

Today, we’re revisiting a quietly complex part of the stewardship journey—what I call “the weight of wealth.” Growing up on a farm with five brothers, I was introduced to the outdoors and especially backpacking. Just like carrying a pack in the wilderness, managing wealth carries its own kind of weight—ratios, balance, capacity—and no universal formula fits everyone. We’ll look at five subtle signs that your wealth may be weighing you down, and four faithful steps to help you find your footing again. At the heart of it all is Proverbs 30:7-9, a prayer for just enough—not too much, and not too little.  This isn’t about guilt or fear - it’s about freedom. It's about carrying what you've been given with open hands and a steady heart. In this episode, John discusses:  The surprising parallels between backpacking and managing wealth Why financial strain is often more spiritual than practical How to recognize when your wealth is 'managing you' Key Takeaways: Managing wealth is a lot like carrying a backpack on a long trail—there’s no universal weight limit, but knowing your capacity and staying aware of when the load gets too heavy is essential to walking well. When financial concerns start overshadowing your generosity, peace, or spiritual focus, it’s a sign that wealth may be shaping your priorities more than God’s wisdom is. Prayer isn’t just a support tool for financial decisions—it’s the foundation that keeps your heart steady, your perspective clear, and your hands open to whatever God provides or redirects. Bringing others into your financial journey—wise counselors, trusted advisors, or Kingdom-minded mentors—can lighten the load and help you carry wealth with clarity, confidence, and grace. “If you begin to feel a wealth hotspot, if you begin to feel financial strain in your life from the wealth that you have - there may be strain in your friendships, strain in your marriage, strain in your family, strain at work, whatever it may be - as soon as you feel this wealth hotspot forming, stop immediately and deal with it.”     CLICK ON THE LINKS BELOW MORE MONEY MADE FAITHFUL!   VISIT MONEY MADE FAITHFUL: https://moneymadefaithful.com/   GET FREE RESOURCES when you join THE HUB: https://moneymadefaithful.com/resource-library-access/Landing-page   BOOK A WORKSHOP & DETAILS: https://moneymadefaithful.com/money-made-faithful-workshop-2/Landing-page   INVITE JOHN TO SPEAK at your conference, church, or event:  https://moneymadefaithful.com/services   SPECIAL SAVINGS ON JOHN'S BOOK, 'He Spends She Spends' and the small group guide: https://moneymadefaithful.com/shop   FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK: @MoneyMadeFaithful   FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM: @MoneyMadeFaithful   If this blessed you today, please Subscribe, Leave a Review, and Share with someone who you believe will benefit from this message!

Today Daily Devotional

He refreshes my soul. — Psalm 23:3 There is good profit for the shepherd who takes good care of his sheep. Good care means it is less likely for the sheep to suffer disease or exhaustion. Good care means the sheep will more likely fetch a good price at the market. But that is not the motivation of the Lord our shepherd. The care of our shepherd is driven by love and mercy and the desire for abundant flourishing. The psalm writer tells us that the Lord refreshes his soul. The kind of care that the psalmist receives as he follows the one who loves him deeply reaches the depths of his soul. It is the kind of care that reminds him that he belongs to the shepherd. The psalmist knows he is beloved, cherished, and precious. Our culture tends to commodify people, and that is anxiety producing, often leaving us to wonder about ulterior motives. Social media, for example, often encourages us to present false or aspirational impressions of ourselves so that we will be liked. The Lord's beloved, however, are secure in the knowledge that they are dearly loved just as they are. They are confident in the knowledge that they belong to the Lord and have purpose and hope because they are his and no other's. In what ways does God's loving care for you refresh your soul? Lord, slow us down so that we may take time to meditate on your goodness. We thank you that our souls can be refreshed by spending time in your presence. Amen.

Sleep detoxifies our brains! Refined sugars, junk food, and late-night snacking can interfere with sleep. If you want better sleep, eat earlier in the day. For the best sleep, have your last meal around 5:00 p.m. If you're waking at night to urinate, intermittent fasting and a low-carb diet can help. Inflammatory foods, such as grains, can also interfere with your sleep. High carbohydrate diets increase your need for vitamin B1, which reduces anxiety and tension.Kefir contains probiotics that can build up serotonin, which turns into melatonin, the sleep hormone. L. reuteri yogurt also contains helpful probiotics to improve sleep. Consume ½ cup daily; it doesn't have to be before bed.Try the following tips for better sleep to help you wake up early feeling refreshed and energized!

In this refreshed replay, we’re unwrapping a “Christmas in July” perspective to help you revisit your financial goals with renewed clarity and purpose. Whether the year has flown by or felt heavy with unexpected turns, this conversation offers a thoughtful, Christ-centered reset to help you finish strong! In this episode, John discusses: Why midyear is a powerful checkpoint for financial reflection The importance of revising plans in light of real life How to keep your goals aligned with faith and purpose Three practical steps to reflect, revise, and refocus Key Takeaways: Taking time to reflect midyear gives you space to acknowledge progress, recognize what still needs attention, and reconnect with the heart behind your goals. Revising your financial plans allows you to adapt to life’s inevitable changes while staying grounded in a purpose that reflects your current season and needs. Realigning your goals with your faith and God's greater story helps ensure your financial journey is not just productive, but also deeply meaningful and spiritually aligned. Simplifying and refocusing your financial priorities can clear the clutter, ease the pressure, and help you move forward with clarity, confidence, and peace. “We want to leave room for God to move. I'm experimenting with Substack's Video feature. I'm not sure how this will look, appear, or even sound, but giving it a go. Below I include an outline of the video:Outline1. The Familiar Cascade* Many organizations use a hierarchical model: Pillars → Priorities → Initiatives → Epics → Tasks* Timeframes are often assigned at each level (e.g., 3–5 years at the top, sprints at the bottom)* Roles and ownership are mapped accordingly, from executive leadership down to product teams* These models persist because they're intuitive, visual, and create a sense of order2. Core Limitations of the Pyramid* Assumes one-way flow of informationThe model suggests strategy flows down, but in reality, critical insights flow up from teams engaging with customers and the market* Outcomes are often missing or impliedThere's no explicit representation of impact or results, even though that's what ultimately matters* Ignores time-to-impact variabilitySome tasks can generate impact in a week; some initiatives take years. The model fails to show these lags and feedback loops* Pushes teams into execution rolesAs you move down the pyramid, the framing becomes increasingly prescriptive. Teams are expected to deliver “work” without clear problem framing or strategic ownership* Misrepresents the scope and nature of workHigh-impact short-term efforts may not “fit” in the hierarchy, creating friction. It also disincentivizes small, iterative wins3. Temporal Scope and Organizational Culture* Comparing two fictional organizations reveals differences:* Org A's goals are outcome-driven across time horizons (e.g., 1–3 month engagement goals, 3–5 year market positioning)* Org B's goals are more output-focused and vague at longer horizons* Ownership of goals varies by company—some give product teams ownership up to the one-to-three quarter range, others do not* The same pyramid diagram can reflect entirely different behaviors depending on definitions, ownership, and cultural orientation toward outcomes vs. activity4. The Need for Multiple Lenses* The pyramid presents a single, strategy-to-task lens, but organizations operate with multiple overlapping views:* Outcome lens – focused on impact and customer results* Work lens – focused on deliverables and execution* Finance lens – focused on costs, forecasting, and ROI* Structure lens – focused on organizational shifts, team structure, and ownership* Each lens has its own rhythm, scope, and patterns of change* These lenses intersect in complex ways that a static pyramid cannot represent5. Real Work Behaves More Like a Fabric Than a Cascade* Work, strategy, and feedback move in all directions—not just top-down* Many artifacts and processes exist at mid-levels of abstraction, not neatly tiered* A more accurate model is a fabric or network of interconnected items with varying temporal scopes and ownership* Strategic influence can originate anywhere, and changes at any level can ripple across the system6. Introducing Artifact Types and Their CadenceTo support this networked reality, artifacts should be understood in terms of their nature and rhythm:* Anchor Artifacts* Have a defined time horizon (e.g., a 12-month roadmap)* Refreshed on a set cadence (e.g., quarterly planning cycles)* Useful for stability and coordination* Intent Artifacts* Represent bets, goals, OKRs, and strategic initiatives* Tend to evolve as work progresses and understanding deepens* Often nested or linked to other artifacts dynamically* Context Artifacts* Reflect shifting knowledge and environmental signals* Can be volatile (e.g., customer feedback) or stable (e.g., competitive analysis)* Drive updates to other artifact types when significant changes occur7. The Role of Rituals* Artifacts don't stand alone—they are reinforced and refreshed through team and organizational rituals* Effective operating systems clarify:* Which artifacts exist* Who owns them* When and how they are updated* How they relate to each other across different lenses and timeframes* Rituals also provide the opportunity to resolve contradictions and adapt to change8. Final Synthesis* The strategy pyramid is a helpful storytelling tool, especially for presentations or executive alignment* But it is insufficient for designing actual operating models* Effective models recognize:* Multiple lenses (not just one)* Temporal and definitional complexity* The need for dynamic linkages, not static nesting* The interplay of strategy, execution, finance, structure, and learning* Building an effective system means embracing this complexity and supporting it with the right artifacts and rhythms—not oversimplifying it into a cascade Get full access to The Beautiful Mess at cutlefish.substack.com/subscribe

Summer is in full swing—a time filled with sunshine, shifting schedules, and all sorts of new opportunities. But as routines relax and plans pile up, it’s easy for our financial focus to fade without us even realizing it. In this refreshed replay, we’re returning to a timely and practical conversation that really resonated with the Money Made Faithful community. We’re sharing three scripture-anchored tips to help you stay on track with your finances during the summer months so you can enjoy the season while still honoring your financial goals and your faith. In this episode, John discusses: Three simple, biblical strategies to help you navigate summer money choices with purpose Why summer often challenges even the best financial plans—and how to stay grounded How aligning your money choices with biblical wisdom brings peace, clarity, and impact Key Takeaways: Recognize how easily summer’s busyness and unpredictability can pull you off track. Building awareness—of your spending habits, current financial standing, and upcoming expenses—is the first step toward staying focused and faithful. Set clear, meaningful financial goals that reflect both your immediate needs and your long-term vision. By reviewing and adjusting your budget consistently, you can stay on mission—even when summer throws you a curveball. Make every financial decision count by choosing intentionally and resisting the impulse to spend without thought. Budgeting with purpose reflects your values, strengthens your faith journey, and allows you to be a good steward of what God has entrusted to you. Let scripture shape your summer decisions. When your financial plans grow from biblical truth, you’ll find yourself navigating this summer season with a sense of alignment, purpose, and gratitude—putting first things first and honoring God along the way. “Every financial decision, even in the sun and fun of summer, is an opportunity to honor God and steward the blessings that He has given you.”   CLICK ON THE LINKS BELOW MORE MONEY MADE FAITHFUL!

We’re wrapping up our series on how to have your best vacation ever. We’ve already covered the power of setting and sharing expectations, along with eight intentional steps to make your time away more meaningful. But what happens when tech distractions sneak in and start to steal those special moments? In this episode, we’re revisiting five practical tech tips to help you stay focused on what really matters during your vacation. A few thoughtful boundaries can go a long way toward keeping your attention—and your heart—right where it belongs. In this episode, John discusses: Setting clear boundaries for technology use Using digital tools without letting them take over Modeling intentional tech habits for others Capturing memories creatively without relying on phones Getting active to help minimize screen time Key Takeaways: Designate specific times and areas where phones and devices are off-limits—like meals, game time, or evenings. These tech-free zones help protect face-to-face connection and make space for deeper conversations. Schedule intentional moments for using phones—whether it’s snapping photos, checking in with friends, or finding local spots to explore—so tech use stays purposeful, not constant. Lead by example when it comes to phone habits. Others, especially kids, will often mirror what they see, so your own behavior can gently shape the group’s overall tech use. Bring along a digital or disposable camera to encourage creativity without defaulting to your phone. It adds fun to memory-making and invites everyone to see the trip from a different perspective. Plan active group moments that naturally draw attention away from screens—like a hike, a game, or a walk on the beach. Physical activity often creates space for presence, laughter, and lasting memories. “Stay prayerful, flexible, graceful, and kind. Even with preparations and expectations set and shared, and tech tips in place, and doing your best, a plan is still only a plan.”  Resources Mentioned: How Teens and Parents Approach Screen Time by Pew Research Center: https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2024/03/11/how-teens-and-parents-approach-screen-time/ CLICK ON THE LINKS BELOW MORE MONEY MADE FAITHFUL! With summer right around the corner, many of us are longing for a true break—but how do we make sure our vacation leaves us rested, and not just overly busy in a different location? In this refreshed replay of a listener favorite, we revisit eight practical and faith-rooted steps to help you plan a vacation that restores your soul, strengthens your relationships, and honors your calling. Inspired by Mark 6, where Jesus invites His disciples to “come away… and rest,” this conversation blends spiritual wisdom and real-world strategies to help you prepare well and return refreshed. If you're already planning on getting away this summer, this is the episode you will want to hear before you go. In this episode, John discusses: How to plan for true rest before, during, and after your vacation The importance of prayer, preparation, and support systems Creative ways to build margin into your time away Budgeting and financial strategies that align with faithful stewardship Key Takeaways: Start your vacation with prayer—lift up your work, your family, and your time away, inviting God to go before you and be present in every moment. Build support and set boundaries at work—from assigning a vacation buddy to crafting a thoughtful out-of-office reply, prepare to unplug with confidence. Plan both structure and spontaneity—leave room for rest, play, delays, and the unexpected ways God may show up in unplanned moments. Stay financially grounded—determine your budget in advance and vacation at the speed of cash to enjoy peace both during your trip and after you return home. “Your work can wait. Your rest cannot. Jesus is waiting. Your family and friends are too. And may this year be the year of your best vacation ever.”  CLICK ON THE LINKS BELOW MORE MONEY MADE FAITHFUL! The Good Day
Summer in the Psalms - Psalm 124: When I Need to be Refreshed

The Good Day

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2025 10:15

Psalm 124 is where we're starting this summer and though I've chosen this, seemingly by happenstance, simply picking up where we left off from last summer, I don't believe this is a matter of happenstance.I believe it's a Psalm our hearts need to ponder.Perhaps I'm projecting my teacher days a bit here, but summer is often looked at as a time of refreshment. Not just because we can beat the heat by splashing in a refreshing pool of water with friends, but because the days are longer, our schedules a bit more flexible. We vacate, even if not physically to a new location, we vacate to a less stressed, more relaxed state of mind.Or at least, we long to.And what I know to be true is if we want to feel this refreshment mentally - have less to do's and to be's on our minds- and physically - our shoulders moving away from our ears, our guts finding healthy rhythm once again... If we want to feel this refreshment emotionally - less weight to carry... Then, we must be intentional to seek this refreshment spiritually. In other words, if we want to be refreshed mentally, physically and emotionally, we have to bring these things to God.The Psalms are just that. A collection of times when people who lived before us have brought “their things” to God...C A N D A C E  C O F E Rauthor + speaker website | instagram | youtube | facebook

Welcome to the first episode in a special season of 'refreshed replays'—a curated collection of listener favorites we’re revisiting with fresh perspective as we journey toward episode 200. These episodes are packed with timeless wisdom, and we’re pausing to reflect on them with new eyes, fresh hearts, and deeper intention. Today, we're diving into a highly practical and transformative conversation: setting expectations for your next vacation. Whether you're traveling solo, with family, or friends, we'll explore five key areas that can turn your time away into a truly restful and spiritually renewing experience. Join me as we step into this season of reflection and rediscovery—one faithful conversation at a time. In this episode, John discusses: Why unmet expectations can derail even the most well-planned vacations How clear communication can transform family and group trips The spiritual and emotional benefits of vacationing with intention How physical, financial, and relational awareness shapes a fulfilling break Key Takeaways: Identifying what you and others want from your vacation—like quiet, adventure, or space to recharge—helps you communicate clearly and protect your time for true rest. Having honest conversations ahead of time about how you’ll spend time together or apart allows everyone to feel considered and reduces relational tension during the trip. Discussing financial boundaries in advance, including budgets and expectations for shared costs, prevents stress and creates space for generosity and enjoyment. Intentionally planning spiritual moments—like prayer, reflection, or faith-filled conversations—invites God into your time away and brings deeper purpose to your rest. Choosing activities that match your energy, abilities, and capacity allows you to enjoy memorable experiences without returning home more exhausted than when you left. “Your time and rest with family and friends, I just want to remind you, this is important to God. And I believe it's His sincere desire for you and for me to take a break after the hard work.”   CLICK ON THE LINKS BELOW MORE MONEY MADE FAITHFUL! Daily Devotions From Greg Laurie

“Then Jesus left them a second time and prayed, ‘My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.’” (Matthew 26:42 NLT) Jesus’ last stop before His arrest was the Garden of Gethsemane. The garden was located on a slope of the Mount of Olives, just across the Kidron Valley from Jerusalem. When the events of Jesus’ arrest took place, the garden was likely an olive grove surrounded by walls. Some scholars believe it was owned by a wealthy follower of Jesus who allowed Him and His disciples to use it when they were in Jerusalem. Jesus likely chose this familiar spot because He felt the enormity of what was about to happen. The sins of every person who ever lived—and every person who ever will live—were about to be placed on Him. He was about to face God’s full wrath—alone. He was about to suffer as no one had ever suffered. He needed a place to pray, to spend time with His heavenly Father before He endured His Father’s punishment. All the disciples except Judas Iscariot accompanied Him to Gethsemane (although Judas would show up soon enough). At some point, Jesus asked Peter, James, and John to go with Him to a remote part of the garden. He asked them to keep watch so that He wouldn’t be interrupted while He prayed. But even that simple request proved to be too difficult for them. Three times during His three-hour prayer session, Jesus returned to His trio of “watchers.” Three times He found them all asleep. The Bible’s description of Jesus’ prayer time makes it clear that His suffering started long before He was tortured and crucified. Hebrews 5:7 says, “While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death” (NLT). Luke 22:44 says, “He was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood” (NLT). Jesus begged His heavenly Father to take the cup of suffering from Him. He wanted to know if there was another way for God’s plan of salvation to be fulfilled. God heard Jesus’ prayers. He sent an angel to comfort and strengthen Him (see Luke 22:43). And then He said no to His Son’s request. There was no other way. Jesus was the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through Him (see John 14:6). His Father’s answer was all Jesus needed. “I want your will to be done, not mine,” He said (Luke 22:42 NLT). Submitting to God’s will renewed His strength and sense of purpose. That’s why, in the chaos that followed, Jesus was the calmest person in the garden. He knew He was doing God’s will. Refreshed and ready for what lay ahead, Jesus woke His sleepy friends and went out to meet the men who had come to arrest and kill Him. But in those hours in the garden, He revealed three life-changing truths about prayer. One, talking to God gives us the strength, courage, wisdom, and comfort we need to face any situation. Two, God sometimes says no because He has something else planned for us. Three, “Your will be done” is the perfect way to end every conversation with our heavenly Father. Reflection question: What important truths about prayer do you see in the story of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane?
