Send me a Text Message!Psalm 121 is one of the first of a small group (14) of psalms called the "Psalms of Ascent." They were songs for pilgrims on a journey to the holy place, the presence of God. It's a re-do. I first recorded it about 3 years ago during my top 40 Psalms series. But it's a great Psalm to bridge our series on practicing the sabbath and our upcoming series on generosity.Psalm 121 begins with a question and an answer that should direct and motivate both practices. The question is "Where does my help come from?" And the answer is, "My help comes from the Lord." Who can I trust for help? My help comes from the Lord. Where do I go when I need help? My help comes from the Lord. In this episode we will hang out for a bit with this question and answer. Where does my help come from? The Lord. My help comes from the Lord!

I was stuck in the lab.M: You missed a really good game. Our school team played very well. (Text 2)W: Did you hear the weather forecast for tomorrow? Is it going to be windy?M: No, there will be clouds in the morning, and heavy showers in the afternoon and the evening. (Text 3)M: Hey, let's go for a picnic somewhere this weekend.W: Good idea. Can Jack go with us? He's tired of taking exams these past two weeks.M: I don't think so. He's going on a trip this weekend with his school. (Text 4)M: Hello, is this Emma? This is Robert Gellen from Johnson's Electronics.W: Hello, Robert, what can I do for you?M: It's this visit by Mr.Johnson. I'm afraid he's had an emergency and won't be able to make it this time. (Text 5)M: Did you wait long?W: No, just two minutes. How was the flight?M: It was fine, thanks. I slept through the whole flight actually and I feel much better. (Text 6)M: I'm starving. What are we having for dinner tonight, Jane?W: I'm not sure. Something will come to mind once I start.M: I feel like eating French Fries or maybe a ham sandwich. How about you?W: Actually, I was thinking of making something healthy, say ... fish and vegetables.M: Well, in that case, I'll have whatever you make.(Text 7)W: Hello, George, I heard that you're going to Milan for a business trip next week.M: Yes, Susan, I'm also planning a trip to Rome for sightseeing after that.W: Oh, I'm just back from Rome. The city has made some new rules.M: Really? What rules?W: For example, people who dress up as Roman soldiers in charge of photos won't be allowed near tourist spots, and street performers can't sing or play their music on public transport.Another rule bans tourists from eating in public places.M: That's good. Eating in public is inappropriate and could lead to littering.W: Rome isn't the only city to do that. Last year, Florence made a rule saying that tourists would face fines of up to 500 euros if caught eating in the street.M: Wow, that's big money, but it's understandable. (Text 8)W: Hi, Frank. I heard you plan to withdraw from the speech class. Can you tell me why?M: Well, Ms. McDaniel, I don't think I can make it. Public speaking scares me. I just can't get in front of a group and talk. W: What is it that you fear about speaking in front of a group?M: I am afraid I would look silly if I forget a word or say something stupid or if I shake or turn red.W: What would happen if you did run into one of these things?M: People would laugh at me.W: Well, Frank, your fear is really not based on facts. I once asked my students what they would do if someone in class forgot a word or made a mistake. They said they would feel bad for the speaker for they knew they would be in the speaker's shoes some day.Does that make you feel better?M: Yeah, I guess.W: I hope you'll stay in the class, and try a bit more.M: Okay. Thanks, Ms. McDaniel.(Text 9)M: How many applications did we get, Mary?W: Well, overall we got over 200.M: Wow, that many!W: Yes, but most of which we can reject right away, people who don't have the right experience, qualifications, that kind of thing.M: Of course. W: And so, I drew up a short list of 12 candidates.M: Are we going to interview all of them?W: I think we should. But certainly, I'll let you have a look first.M: Great, so, who will we get then?W: Well, I think we have got some pretty strong candidates. Two in particular.M: They have the right kind of qualification? W: I certainly say so. A strong educational background, experience in sales, language skills ...M: Good. Look forward to meeting all of them.W: So, I'd say we do a set interview for that.M: Sure.W: A few general questions, then onto specifics. We could also ask them to give a short presentation.M: Great. I'm really looking forward to this.(Text 10)W: Welcome back, everyone. This is CB8 News Radio. Here comes something interesting. Yesterday, a teenage girl named Terra Gallo, Cumberland, got some unexpected news when she received a handwritten letter from a fisherman saying that her message in a bottle had been found in Spain. Gallo and her sister put messages into bottles and threw them into the ocean while visiting their aunt on Monhegan Island three years ago. The girls had forgotten about the bottles until they were surprised by the fisherman's letter. Gallo, now 14, studied the maps and discovered her message traveled about 3,000 miles. Gallo's message asked that whoever got her bottle should put their own message inside with hers and send it back out to sea. The fisherman said in his letter that he had carried out her wishes.
Send me a Text Message! What if I only had one day, one day to live, one day to give, or just one day to do whatever my heart desired to do? What would you do with one day to do whatever you wanted to do?The average lifespan in the United States is 29,200 days (give or take). My mother-in-law recently celebrated her 32,872nd day. My mom and dad are both over 30,000 days old. In a few weeks, I will celebrate my 23,376th day! In Psalm 84, David says that one day in God's presence is worth a 1000 anywhere else. One day in God's presence is better than 1000 of my best days anywhere else. Which causes me to pause and ask, "Would I give my life for 23+ days in God's presence? Or let me make it more immediate and practical. Would I give God an hour of my day today, if I thought it was that good?Psalm 84 is an encouraging and convicting Psalm that causes me to ask the question, "What would I do if I only had one day?"

Send me a Text Message!Far too often, I come to God to get something from God. But what the gifts of the giver, keep me from embracing the greatest gift? See there is nothing greater than Christ. Christ is the treasure of Christianity. Listen, I don't know why you go to church, why you listen to this podcast, but if it's not ultimately because you want more of Christ, then chances are good that you're going to miss everything. Listen to me, there is a hunger and a thirst deep inside of you that nothing will touch, nothing will satisfy, except Christ...So here's the question I end with in this episode, "Are you willing to stop feeding at banquet tables where the main course is not Christ. If it's necessary will you let go of the good to go after God? Are you thirsty for the gift of God?"
Cruise travelers are navigating a season of change. Low water on the Danube and Rhine is disrupting peak river cruise sailings, with Avalon Waterways shifting departures from Nuremberg to Passau, AmaWaterways moving guests off the AmaMagna above Budapest, and Viking swapping sister ships to keep itineraries running. On the ocean side, Cunard's Queen Victoria heads to Damen Shiprepair in Rotterdam from October 17 to November 5 for a refit that adds eight new staterooms and refreshes public spaces including the Grand Lobby and Queens Room. And Windstar's newly acquired Star Explorer has arrived at the West Sea shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, for a conversion that lifts capacity to 224 guests ahead of a December 28 debut.
In order for us to be effective in God's kingdom, we need to learn how to find rhythms of resting and being renewed in God's Presence. Today we learn how God wants to refresh our souls!
Jordan starts a new series, Refreshed, looking at what the Sabbath was always meant to be. Not a list of rules but a life-giving rhythm God designed for our good. He challenges us to rest intentionally, trusting that a truly refreshed soul will always overflow into love for others.
Refresh One Another — Episode 3: Refreshed by Participation Series: Refresh One AnotherPodcast: Quiet Time CoachingWould you like to learn more about how to be refreshed, and how to refresh others? That's what this series is all about.I'm Malcolm Cox, and this is Quiet Time Coaching, a devotional podcast. Today we're finishing our series, Refresh One Another, based on the Bible's "one another" commands and promises. This is Episode 3: Refreshed by Participation.Episode 3: Participate, Don't Just Congregate We've seen that Jesus is the one who truly refreshes us, and that one of the main ways he does that is through other individual Christians. But here's something I've noticed, both in my own life and in the lives of others. We can be around church without really opening ourselves to what the Holy Spirit wants to do through the church as a body.Is it possible to come along each week, enjoy being with God's people, and yet stay on the edge? I think many of us have done that at one time or another. I know I have. How does that feel? Do you leave refreshed? Most often, not.Jesus has something better in mind. He invites us not only congregate, but to participate. There's a difference between being present in the room and being engaged with the people God has placed around us. We can experience the event without really experiencing refreshment. We can have Christian friends without allowing those relationships to become channels of God's grace. As Jeremy Linneman puts it in his book Why do we feel lonely at church?:"True belonging is being fully known and fully loved—by God and by your community."As we grow in Christ, the Holy Spirit wants to shape us into people who notice others, who pray for them, encourage them, listen to them, and allow them to do the same for us.Perhaps that's a good prayer for today:"Lord, open my eyes. Help me notice someone who needs encouragement. Show me how I can be part of the refreshing work you're already doing."The apostle John is blunt on the matter. If we don't love the brother or sister we can see, how can we claim to love the God we cannot see? (1 John 4.19-21). One of the ways our love for God becomes visible is in the way we care for the people he has put right in front of us.And if you're the one who needs refreshing today, don't carry that burden alone. Ask God for help. Ask him to show you someone you can talk and pray with. Very often the refreshment we're longing for comes through the people Christ has already placed in our lives.Let's not settle for simply attending. Let's ask the Spirit to help us participate in what he's doing. As we do, we'll discover not only the joy of refreshing others, but that God refreshes us as well.Reflection Questions: Am I participating in the life of my congregation, or mostly attending? What's one small step I could take this week? Who might God be prompting me to encourage, pray for, or spend time with? If I need refreshing myself, who could I ask to pray with me this week? If you have any questions or feedback, please contact me at malcolm@malcolmcox.org.Many thanks for listening. May we be among those whose hearts are refreshed by Christ, and who refresh the hearts of others.Take care, and God bless.Malcolm

Send me a Text Message!Well this isn't the message I preached last Sunday on the Psalms, but it is the Psalm I would have preached on if I wasn't on vacation. :) Psalm 77 is a powerful Psalm on gratitude in the midst of hard times. Few spiritual practices are as easy to understand, and require so little "practice" as gratitude, but honestly it is so powerful, so helpful, so refreshing. Maybe this Psalm will spur us on to gratitude!

Send me a Text Message! For those of you who are newer to "More Than Bread" for sometime now I often take a break from the "5 episodes a week" life and simply upload my sermon from the last Sunday (or something similar) on Mondays. Lately at Calvary we've been going through the Psalms with the theme of finding "A Life Refreshed."This episode takes a look at Psalm 42 and 43. It's a Psalm of Lament, with a recurring theme of hope. No matter how hard the days or how dark the night, hope is fuel for our hearts. And here is the truth, "The best is yet to come, and He is worth the wait!"
Send me a Text Message!Psalm 51 is all about sin. Well not just sin. It's all about sin and the overflowing, relentlessly overwhelming love of God. Here's the deal, no one sins out of duty. We sin when we believe that God cannot satisfy my heart. There was a time in David's life where God was the all-satisfying pursuit of his heart. This writer of psalms. This warrior-poet-King with a huge appetite for life. This passionate worshipper of God. There was a time in his life where he had lost everything that we would consider necessary for the good life. He was living in caves on the run from a King who wanted to kill him. Lost his family. Lost his home. Lost his freedom. But when you read the Psalms, you realize that when David had nothing, he realized God was his everything. God was his life. But then when he experienced success, he went from "God is my life" to "my life is good." Here's the deal, the point of Psalm 51 is not just that we would say no to sin. The point of Psalm 51 is that we gain the life that comes from saying yes to God!
Send me a Text Message! This Psalm is not part of our series, but it's a great description of a life refreshed. This last weekend was CWOW weekend, which is a Sunday that we practice being the church rather than going to church. But this Psalm came to mind...Psalm 133 is focused in unity, relationships. A few years ago, the surgeon general of the United States said that the greatest epidemic we are facing right now is an epidemic of loneliness. John Cacioppo, director for Social Neuroscience at the University of Chicago, is the world's leading expert on loneliness. In his landmark book, on loneliness, he describes how profoundly the epidemic of loneliness is affecting the basic functions of human physiology. He writes: "When we drew blood from our older adults and analyzed their white cells, we found that loneliness somehow penetrated the deep recesses of the cell to alter the way genes were being expressed." In other words, when you are lonely, your whole body is lonely. Psalm 133 is a reminder of God's treasuring of community. We are created with a connection requirement! Let unity refresh your life!

Send me a Text Message! This message was given on Father's Day as part of our summer Psalms series. And here is the heart of the message. Before we ever talk about the kind of fathers we need to be, we need to talk about the Father we long for. I really believe that in every heart, there is a father we long for. I know we come with mixed emotions on Father's Day. But before we talk about the kind of fathers we want to be, weshould talk about the kind of Father we have. He's described in Psalm 103. We long for a Father, for a Father God who loves us unconditionally, unrelentingly, with His whole heart. See before I can be a good father, I need to have a good Father. And in the journey of become a good father, I need to understand where the journey starts. It's not about trying harder, it's about looking higher. He is the father our hearts long for...
Send me a Text Message! One of the ways that my stream of Christianity likes to describe our faith is with the words, "A personal relationship with God." It's not about religion, it's about relationship, a personal relationship with God. But what in the world does it mean to have a personal relationship with God? In Psalm 46:10, it starts with these words, "Be still and know that I am God."Usually when we think of the stillness, we think of quiet; a lack of distractions and in our world today, the noise is part of our problem. I'm not saying we don't need quiet. But when God says in Psalm 46:10 "Be still and know that I am God." it's a far deeper call than just "be quiet." The Hebrew word means stop striving. Literally let your arms hang down and your hands go slack. Stop fighting. Relax. Quit trying to measure up. Give up. Hands up. Let it go. And watch me be God. That's at the heart of this message in answer to the question, "Do you know God?"

Send me a Text Message! Is there any Psalm more loved than the one that starts with these words, "The Lord is my shepherd and I will lack nothing." But here's the deal...I can't say those words without embracing these words, "And I'm a sheep." Now of course you are more than a sheep. You are a child of God filled with the Spirit of God. You are God's beautiful masterpiece, created and called to make a difference in the world. But you are, I am also a sheep. That's where we started in episode #2 of "A Life Refreshed" our look at the Psalms. And at the heart of the message are some thoughts on how we get from here (drained, discouraged, perhaps even a bit lost) to there, a life refreshed!
In seeking a welcome for the runaway slave, Onesimus, Paul banks on his history with Philemon, and risks his own resources, modeling radical Christian love.
Send me a Text Message! As I have been doing, on More Than Bread for awhile now, when I preach on Sunday at Calvary, Monday's episode is that message. If you are feeling drained, damaged, or a little bit of hope-less, you may find this one encouraging. The next episode we will be back to Nehemiah!

Showing Faith through love is a way of refreshing others and yourself and the by product of that: Your soul will be refreshed and your mind at peace. By the way, this is being done with the understanding God is our main source for comfort and peace. However, in implementing what Jesus demonstrated to us in Scripture, and what the Spirit of God made known to us through Apostle Paul, in doing so, God will honor our effort by refreshing us for our willingness to refresh others. God can do this supernaturally for us in our inner most part. He could also do it by using others as His vessels, to refresh us. Press play to hear more of this conversation!
