In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I discuss how to build muscle strength and size (hypertrophy) and cover key training principles to enhance athletic performance and offset age-related muscle decline. I explain how the nervous system drives muscle movement, the key differences between training for hypertrophy or strength, and resistance training protocols to build muscle for performance and healthy aging. Additionally, I discuss tools for assessing recovery and the role of key nutrients—such as creatine and electrolytes—in supporting muscle development and performance. This episode provides actionable, science-backed strategies to enhance movement, preserve strength with age, and boost energy levels. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. In this first-ever edition of “A.I. the Science Guy,” we delve into Robert Epstein's 2021 paper, “Brain as Transducer.” Epstein proposes that the human brain functions as a conduit that converts external stimuli into subjective awareness, challenging traditional models of information processing. By positioning the brain as a “transducer,” he highlights how cognition might involve a continuous translation of physical signals into coherent mental experiences. This perspective invites new discussions across fields ranging from neuroscience to artificial intelligence, reshaping our understanding of how mind and matter intertwine.

Sarah returned to her Real World house and wasn't prepared for how emotional it would make her, and now she's considering why the experience brought out so many feelings. We talk about "wet dog shake," what causes it, and why some mammals have that response to certain stimuli, while others, like cats and mice, don't. We learn about dozens of monkeys who escaped from a research lab, and debate whether we're on team monkeys or team science. Either way, those monkeys are clever and free. We discuss a man who uses a medical voice board to communicate and how he modified the device to make it more personal and reflective of his identity. We consider which accents we like in the world and which grate on our nerves, and why so many people hate the sound of their own voice. Sarah explains how chocolate exposed racism within the movie industry, and how things have improved since the 70s. Plus, we discuss the Sweet Bobby documentary where a woman is catfished by someone for a decade, and we debate how someone could allow that to happen, why it could happen to anyone, and why there wasn't much punishment for the person who tricked her.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Get an exclusive 20% off your first order at https://thrivecausemetics.com/BRAINCANDYhis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. What is normal? In a world of air brushing and curated content, it can be illusive. Yet, having a good compass toward knowing normal goes a long way toward good mental health. Studies have shown that supernormal stimuli can have a damaging effect on our brains.  In this episode of Breaking Bread, addiction specialist, Jacob Feucht, teaches us what supernormal stimuli are, how to spot them and unwind their influence.     Show Notes:  Definition:   Supernormal Stimulus – Exaggerated characteristics in normal stimuli.   Problem:   Studies have shown that humans can begin to crave what is not natural or real at the expense of what is natural and real.  Examples:  Diet: We can crave unnatural foods at the expense of natural foods.  Attention: We can crave unnatural rapidity of stimuli and addict ourselves to distraction because we resist the “slowness” of reality.  Pornography: We crave sexual stimuli and addict ourselves to unnatural characteristics at the expense of healthy biblical sexual relations.  Healthy living:  Seek after, linger in and live in the real world. Learn to love what God created and what He created them for.

They draw lessons from a variety of training scenarios and odors, whether essential oils or narcotics. They also touch on the difference between distraction and diversion, and the use of discriminative stimuli in a training environment. Our hosts stress the need to identify your dog's unique personality, experience level, and skill mastery, and how to incorporate that context into your training strategy by providing challenges that encourage independent problem-solving.The Dames of Detection unpack the concept of "dog time.” It's a concept that our hosts have applied in Distraction Camp and Intentional Handling classes in which you're encouraged to allow your dog to work at their own pace without excessive handler interference. To paraphrase:There's a lot of research on stress, and this one conclusion is key --It's not the stimuli, it's our response to those stimuli.First step, be aware. What am I feeling? Is my body telling me that I am stressed? Second step, try to understand what about that stimulus is stressing you. What is the perceived threat? Figuring that out may take a moment. So, buy some time. Take a breath. As a few minutes pass, you are allowing your body to calm itself. Ask a question, calmly. Ask more. Get some clarification. Try to unearth what stressed you.  To get to a place where your body drops down from high alert to a calmer place.A place where you can then be able to more easily say and do things that will serve you better and will not invite or exacerbate unnecessary negative conflict.  Do you have comments or suggestions about a topic or guest? In this episode, my guest is Dr. E.J. Chichilnisky, Ph.D., professor of neurosurgery and ophthalmology at Stanford University, studying how we see and use that information to build artificial eyes to restore vision to people who are blind. We discuss how understanding the retina (the light-sensing brain tissue that lines the back of our eyes) is critical to knowing how our brain works more generally. We discuss brain augmentation with biologically informed prostheses, robotics, and AI and what this means for medicine and humanity. We also discuss E.J.'s unique journey into neuroscience and how changing fields multiple times, combined with some wandering, taught him how to guide his decision-making in all realms of life. This episode ought to be of interest to anyone interested in learning how the brain works, from a world-class neuroscientist to the future of brain therapeutics and to those seeking inspiration and tools for navigating their own professional and life journey. In this episode of HALO Talks, host Pete Moore is joined by Director of Education, Jeremy Strom, from Reaxing International. Jeremy shares insights into the Reaxing system, a game-changing, neuroscience-based program designed to train for unpredictability and enhance overall movement and response time. He discusses the company's innovative products, such as the Reax Run treadmill and Reax Board, and their impact on various industries, from health clubs to helping with Parkinson's treatments. Jeremy also highlights the company's commitment to research, education, and consumer-focused training, providing a glimpse into their future plans.  On using the products themselves, Strom states, "When you utilize and implement Reaxing products, it lights the brain to '5G communication,' and that communication now allows us to respond to what the 'machine' is doing, and implement the full system from the brain, to the big toe, out to the middle fingers-in such a way that more tissue is lit up, more reactive time, the reactive time is faster, and you're able to now handle those situations better out in the real world." Some key moments:  Passionate about biohacking, movement, and energy. Seeking whole cardio space, market shifting niche. New Reaxing North America sees big wins. Partnered with trainers, built successful businesses. A few key takeaways: 1. Reaxing is a training philosophy and product line that focuses on providing unpredictable stimuli to train quicker response time, resilience, and improve brain-body communication. 2. Some of their products, such as the Reax treadmill and Reax Board can be implemented in a variety of settings, from general fitness clubs to physical therapy clinics, and are especially impactful for individuals with Parkinson's and other neurological disorders. 3. Reaxing International was founded in 2016 and has seen significant success, including collaborations with Parkinson's clinics, the LA Rams, and the naval warfare center. 4. In this episode I talk about natural transitional rewards. Many may not have heard the term, but a lot of you may have used them in the training of your dog whether you realize it or not. If you want to do a real dive into the behavioral part of training, I encourage you to listen to my two episodes on conditioning - Session 73: Skinner's Four Quadrants Part One, and Session 74: Skinner's Four Quadrants Part Two. I'll talk about the conditioning baked into every day interactions with your dog (like the feeding ritual). The same thing goes for when we are preparing for a walk. Those rituals can be a good thing. But it's it's more than simply the obedience skill you're teaching - it's the nervous system state that is occurring during that sit/stay and from the moment that you give the command to "break free" or say "all done". I'll describe how those commands and practices get embedded in their head, and how that fixation needs to be inhibited in certain instances. Here are a couple of other instances where you might practically use this training; Preparing for a walk Preparing for feeding time The "Getting out of a car" ritual Going through the front door ritual Going through the gate at the dog park ritual I'll talk about how sometimes we unintentionally signal to our dog when we reward certain types of gregarious responses is "I love it when you freak out and run around when I do this action!" Identifying those habits is a real eye-opener to what you might want to consider adjusting during these routines. Meet Our New Sponsor! By the way, a couple of things that I wanted to mention to you. Joining me today are two guests Rusette Auton and Karin Beasant. Karin has previously featured in season one when exploring The Jamaica Inn and joined us today to share an amazing experiment that took place at Woodchester Mansion. This experiment, known as The Singapore Theory, was aided by Rusette Auton who is the Managing Director of Bath Theatrical. We were able to dive into some of the haunting history of Woodchester Mansion, the paranormal investigations and activity associated with Bath Theatrical's premises as well as chat about this rather intriguing experiment and how Rusette may be able to support other people within the paranormal field and beyond interested in using her bespoke services. Thank you for listening. If you want to get your hands on The Feminine Macabre Volume I, II or III then make sure to take a look at https://spookeats.com/femininemacabre/ or via Amazon.
