Who farted? Do you have that one piece of media that you would like to check out, but never seem to get around to it? Like, you're scrolling through Netflix, and there's that one movie that you're interested in checking out, but not this time. Or the next time, or the time after that. It's always there, and you're interested, but not interested enough to dive in at the moment. That, my friends, is how Blue Man Group was for me until recently. I've known who the Blue Man Group was for over 20 years now. I remember there was an Intel Pentium TV commercial that they starred in, and a little Googling tells me that was in the year 2000. Sometime after that, I borrowed their album - yes, they have albums - from a friend, because I really liked the unique sound they had. And when I took my very first grownup trip to Vegas in 2002, I stayed at the Luxor, where BMG has had their Las Vegas home off and on since the year 2000. Men beat their 'bone, live on stage! I've never been one to mince words in my reviews, so I'll say up front that I liked Blue Man Group. But I'm having a hard time describing Blue Man Group. I left the theater thinking, “I don't know what the fuck I just saw, but I'm pretty sure I liked it.” Kind of like a donkey show in Tijuana, but a little more family friendly. So the Blue Man Group itself goes all the way back to 1987. Created as a sort of performance art by three friends in Manhattan's Lower East Side, the group started with street performances which gradually grew to full on stage productions. People in New York like weird artsy shit. Gradually it became a phenomenon, with worldwide tours, 3 albums, and more blue latex than any person should have access to. The Blue Man Group brand was sold to Cirque du Soliel in 2017, another Vegas mainstay. So what the hell is it? The show is kind of a techo-surreal experience. Three Blue Men guide the audience through various experiences, like making music, art, and marshmallow tossing. Without spoken words, the show manages to explore themes of science and technology, information overload, and cultural norms. The characters have a sort of naive curiosity in their behavior. It can come across as mime-like in its execution, but there's more to it than that. The characters seem like visitors from another world, and their experiments and explorations address our assumptions about the world around us. Chest-hole. Imagine colored paint leaking out of a member's chest hole onto an under-lit drum that flashes brightly when struck, showing colored drops of paint splattering through the air. If you are thinking that this seems weird as fuck, you're right, but there's a sort of mystical coolness about this when BMG does it on stage. Watch as they play wild instruments custom made from PVC pipe and create songs that are absolute bangers. They play songs that the group has created themselves, along with well-known classics like Beethoven's Fur Elise, pop songs like Bad Romance, and even tease a little Freebird. Audience Fuckery Factor: Minimal, but they do go out in the audience looking for volunteers. They look for people raising hands, so don't raise your hand if you don't want to go onstage. And just like a trip to Sea World, avoid the first several rows if you don't want to get splashed. I think they hand out plastic rain ponchos, because I saw several people with them. The show plays with light (you may be blinded by the lights during the show) and sound (I highly recommend ear plugs). This could be you! The theater is nice. It has a capacity of 830 people. There is a low slope on the house floor, so you may have people blocking your view. I recommend row AA if you don't want anyone directly in front of you, but you also don't want to be splashed or singled out. Shows are 2 - 3 times /day everyday of the week. Tickets start at $49. This is a great value show. I also think it works well as a family show, or show to take the in-laws to when they decide they want to join in Vegas because you're always going there.
And children of all ages...Let the show begin.

Despite hating things in masks, I love Cirque de Soliel shows. I love the acrobatics, the musical score, the animation and effects--and I especially enjoy walking into the dimly lit theater as I observe the set and the character that "warms up" the crowd before the show actually begins. These elements set the stage for the anticipation of the actual show! Similarly, when we worship God, we get to experience His power, His sovereignty, His provision, His holiness and so much more as we enter into the presence of the Holy Spirit with shouts of praise and thanksgiving. But this is not always easy, and there are times and seasons in life where we might be struggling to praise God and offer shouts of thanksgiving. Since we know music can evoke powerful emotions in our souls, sometimes we want to "turn off" the emotion that draws us closer to God and stay in to the cave of confusion or den of despair. But during a Holy Spirit moment, I was convicted that if I chose to "fight like hell" to overcome this season by wondering, worrying, and wallowing, I was only playing into the enemy's schemes. As the accuser, satan wants me to stay stuck and "lay by the pool" for years and years--but thankfully Jesus appears on the scene and asks the invalid--"Do you want to get well?" It's a choice! It's a decision. We can fight like heaven and stop making excuses and take action or we can continue to lay by the side of the pool. Which will you choose? Welcome back to The Work IN everyone! Lately I've been exploring the idea of letting go of old things to make room for new. It comes from the yama of Aparigraha or abundance. When you lean into an abundance mindset, that there's always going to be enough, that you're always going to be enough for whatever you want to have happen, when you learn to trust that, then you can let go of old stuff, old ideas, old beliefs and can set yourself free. One of those beliefs that I see crop up time and time again in myself and my clients is this myth that in order to get the health benefits of exercise or yoga it takes a lot of time. One of the most common excuses people have for why they don't exercise regularly is because they don't have time. And beneath that is the belief that taking 2 hours out of your day isn't with it. You're not worth it. And as wonderful as a yoga practice is, there's a common misconception that in order to “do” real yoga it has to be in a zen like studio for 90 minute classes, every day, in cute yoga clothes. Oh and you have to be stick thin and Cirque du Soliel flexible. God if any of those things were actually true I wouldn't practice yoga either.Yoga & movement snacks snacks are a way to get more activity throughout your day without having to step out of your day.Elementalkinetics.com/snacktimeKinetic Grace Resilience Youtube channel
Danny Boy of House of Pain joins Scott this week for an in-depth, entertaining discussion. Danny is Executive Director of The Outsiders House Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Founding member of House of Pain & La Coka Nostra. The conversation begins with some discussion of Danny's appearance in the recently released 'Kid90' documentary on Hulu. The documentary chronicles the behind the scenes life of kid star Soliel Moon Frye. Danny's relationship with Soliel and struggles with addiction are a part of the documentary. In this discussion he tells Scott his memories of their relationship as well as how they reconnected 20 years later by chance. In this chat, Danny shares the story of his upbringing, which was a difficult one. He was brought up around a broad range of music, specifically hip hop. He talks about the drug culture that was going on behind the scenes of the hip hop world.House of Pain enjoyed a huge wave of success but just as quickly, Danny got tied up in hard drugs. In this discussion he tells Scott about the choices he made and how those choices caused things to spin out of control. After getting sober, things began to turn up personally for Danny Boy. In the first 3 years of sobriety, he began getting things in order, putting out a solo album as well as forming strong business ties. However, internally, he had stopped doing the work needed and continued to struggle. He would eventually overcome addiction and put it behind him. It's an inspiring story. The movie 'The Outsiders' is very important to Danny. As a latchkey kid, it helped him through childhood. It had such an impact on him that he actually purchased the house from the movie and has written a book on his collection of memorabilia from the film. His story of finding the house, purchasing, and rebuilding it is incredible.Other topics touched on include touring with Cypress Hill, crimes before House of Pain, the staying power of 'Jump Around,' the early 90's resurrection of Hip Hop, getting fired from the Beastie Boys tour, the Judgement Night soundtrack, a love of early 80's pop culture, and much more!We hope you enjoy Scott's talk with Danny Boy of House of Pain and SHARE with a friend!

This week's storytellers are one-woman stunt show Martika, drag performer Edie, Broadway actor & singer Kimberly JaJuan, and magician Rudy Coby. In this episode all the stories are tied together with a theme of "Origin Stories." Martika: How She Went From Working in Veterinary Science to Performing Full Time The first story is told by Martika, an international variety entertainer based in Kansas City, MO. and is the C.E.O. of KC Entertainment Services, LLC. Having left a career as a veterinary technician more than ten years ago, she's toured the world solo, performing fire art stunts, escapes, and other sideshow danger acts. In fact, she's Kansas City's only woman sword swallower, and the only one woman show of this kind in the Midwest! She also teaches a variety of workshops in these disciplines establishing her even further as an expert. In her story, Martika tells about how she left a career in veterinary sciences to pursue a career in the entertainment world. Here's where you can find out more about Martika: Martika's Website: https://themartikashow.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themartikashow/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/martikamd Edie: How the Character of Edie Was Created The second story is told by Edie, is a stage performer, dancer, actor, and drag performer most notably known for portraying the Emcee of Cirq du Soliel's Zumanity. In this story, we hear about how the character of Edie was created almost as if by accident! Here's where you can find out more info about Edie: Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/tobiandpearl Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/edie_entertainer/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/edie.entertainer/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/edieentertainer Kimberly JaJuan: Creating the Character Lisette in Marie Christine The third story is told by Kimberly JaJuan, a singer and actor both on and off Broadway. She's a graduate of The Eastman School and of Julliard School earning both Bachelor's and Masters Degrees. Some of her more notable (and favorite) roles have been Singing with Gloria Estefan and Harry Connick, Jr. at the Papal visit at Madison Square Garden, portraying the role of Sarah in Ragtime on Broadway, and creating the role of Lisette alongside classmate Audra McDonald in Marie Christine. Most recently she could have been seen bringing Hercules to life with the Public Works at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. She's a long time member and manager of Broadway Inspirational Voices, a diverse, professional choir of broadway artists, united to change lives through the power of music and service. She's also a broadway investor debuting as an Associate Producer on productions like American Son, Ain’t Too Proud, and Hadestown to name a few. In her story, Kimberly talks about creating the character Lisette in the show Marie Christine. Rudy Coby: Fond & Funny Memories Performing in the Original Cast of The Lion King on Broadway The final story comes from Rudy Coby, AKA Lab Man. You may have seen his ultra unique act on TV with him walking around on stage with four legs, or if you've been to a Marilyn Manson show, you've seen his work there as well, as Rudy designed all the special effects. This week's storytellers are Greg Triggs, Edie, Ran'D Shine, Tom Ameen, and Suzanne. In this episode you'll hear stories about "Entertainers In Real Life." How our art can have a profound effect on people after the show is over, and entertainers having to perform after receiving difficult news. You'll hear about an unexpected gesture of gratitude from someone who saw the previous night's show, a heartfelt letter to the cast of Cirque du Soliel's Zumanity, a mild stalker situation, and two stories about having to perform a show after receiving tough news…losing a loved one, and receiving a cancer diagnosis. The first story comes from Greg Triggs, a show director, writer, and improv sketch artist who's appeared with top sketch comedy troupes like The Brave New Workshop in Minneapolis and the Who, What, and Warehouse at Disney's Comedy Warehouse in Orlando. Greg tells us about a time when having a great show helped him get his car fixed, a time when something he said rubbed an audience member the wrong way, and what he learned about being true to his audience. The second story comes from Edie, a stage performer, dancer, and actor, most notably known for portraying the Emcee of Cirq du Soliel's Zumanity. Performer Stories — Fascinating Stories from Top Entertainers
This week's storytellers are Graeme Reed, Christopher Campbell FenyxFyre, Magic Mike Brooks, and Edie. In this episode we feature stories that surround a theme of "The Painful & The Surreal." You'll hear stories involving a "smash & stab" trick gone wrong, a fire performer unexpectedly catching on fire during his act, a kid's party babysitting fire, and a literal shipwreck. The first story comes from Graeme Graemazing Reed, a "Level 7 Wizard" who doesn't take himself too seriously and has been mastering the virtual show arena. He's also co host to the Magicians Talking Magic podcast. Graeme tells us about a time when the infamous "smash & stab" trick went painfully wrong. The second story comes from Christopher Campbell FenyxFyre, an awe-inspiring entertainer who's a master of the fire arts and other side-show disciplines. He's been wowing audiences with performances that must be seen to be believed for over a decade. As the innovator of insanity, he defies the brain and awakens curiosity. Listen to him telling about the time he actually caught on fire during his fire act. The third storyteller is Magic Mike Brooks. Offering a wide variety of services from hypnosis, large-scale stage illusions, mentalism, and even close up strolling magic, Mike has become the premier choice for this kind of entertainment in and around Ohio. Here he is telling about a kids party babysitting fire. Our final story comes from Edie, a stage performer, dancer, and actor, most notably known for portraying the Emcee of Cirq du Soliel's Zumanity. Edie talks about experiencing an actual shipwreck. Elenco e Idealização | Luanna Rocha e Tiago Marques. Tanya went from being a too tall gymnast to performing one of the most iconic silks numbers in one of the most iconic Cirque du Soliel shows, Quidam. She is now working as part of the creative team for the circus company Short Round Production. This episode is filled with amazing insights, from how to break down difficult skills, to working with people who may not have the quote unquote standard body type for circus, to the impact social media has on the standards of professionalism and ownership over choreography, to how to get work in the circus industry, Tanya shared so much wisdom and insight in this interview. The Artist Athlete is coming to you from Bangkok this week where Shannon is training and having lunch with circus coach and choreographer Chloé Farah. Chloé initially started her circus training as a flying trapeze artist before an accident led her to enroll in the Ecole Nationale de Cirque's work-based learning program (ACS Instructor Training). She graduated under the instruction of famed circus coach, Victor Fomine, with a degree specializing in aerial straps. She now works as a circus coach and choreographer for individual artists and with Cirque du Soliel. In this interview, Chloé gives her unique perspective on how she trains artists as well as what she believes makes an excellent act. In the US, it can be argued that we have an economic system that benefits from individuals staying ignorant and stressed out about money. But what if that could change? What if, instead of the old troupe of artists being bad with money, artists were extraordinarily good with our money- as creative and smart about it as we are about utilizing other resources in our community. Enter Hadassah Damien, this week's guest. Hadassah is actually not a circus artist (though her partner used to be) but, she toured the US producing queer femme performance art before she launched the website ridefreefearlessmoney.com to help people take control of their finances. If you're about to turn this episode off and wait until next week when I interview a super awesome Cirque du Soliel star or a famous Instagram aerial instructor, I want you to take a moment and listen to this interview. Even if you're not an artist, but someone who just enjoys watching circus, your role is as important in this discussion (Hadassah would say you have one of the most important roles in this discussion) so give it a moment and listen up! It allows you to set up expectations, decrease stress, Three Purposes of the Pre-Wedding Consultation: 1. Setting up the foundation for a successful wedding day timeline by going over the wedding details and getting connected with the coordinator. 2. Determining the appropriate amount of coverage to ensure you’re getting paid for your time. 3. Creating legacy images for the couple based on their individual desires and situations. 4 Tips to Improve Pre-Wedding Consultation: 1. Setting the expectation from the very first conversation that the consultation with happen 3-4 weeks before the wedding. 2. Get to know your couple on a personal level through their family dynamics, a family tree, and a history of each family member. 3. Don’t give away time. If you realize during the consultation that there may not be enough time in the day, suggest adding more. 4. Don’t assume your client is going to give you everything you need to know about the wedding day; you have to ask the questions. Hi, welcome to the Mouse and More Podcast! On today's show, we serve the news with a touch of sass, laughter and tears. OK, maybe not tears. That depends on how you feel about Flights of Wonder and Stitch. In addition, we talk about Disney's newest foray into the night club scene, Edison. Will you be dancing the night away or will you be snoozing in your room after a day of going commando in the parks? In completely unrelated news, we discuss Star Wars, but don't worry, there are no spoilers other than a brief mention of Kylo Ren's pants We also talk about the upcoming refurbishment over at the American Adventure in Epcot, the latest news with Cirque du Soliel, and your favorite acts appearing at this years Flower and Garden Festival. Our apologies in advance to Stacy from Must Do Disney and Night Ranger and any other celebrities we may have offended during the show. As always, if you like us, go rate us on iTunes and subscribe! Hope you enjoy the show! Talk to you soon!

This week Canadian legend, Olympian, World vault finalist, 13-year Cirque du Soliel veteran, entrepreneur and NCAA team champion, Stella Umeh tells her story. Known for her incredible power combined with her dance background helped Stella perform floor routines that ballerinas and jazz dance fans alike sigh with ecstasy. Jessica joined Stella and her 3-month-old daughter, Billie (cue adorable baby gurgles in the background), in November while Stella and her husband, Sam, (head electrician for Cirque's Kurios show) stopped in California. We discuss: On being an A-typical Canadian gymnast in her era and being labeled as difficult for standing up for herself and doing things her own way: "I work hard, I play hard. I'm responsible because I love what I'm doing, I'm not going to jeopardize it (also because I don't want to get injured).... I would always do the job but because I didn't fit the mold, it looked like I was fooling around or Mickey Mousing or I wasn't taking things seriously. But I don't think you have to completely conform and lose yourself to take something seriously--because if you are meant to do it, and it is your passion, it's going to be serious regardless of who you are or what you look like. You see a person's heart and soul in what they are doing; and that is what people should be looking at." Injuries and accidents: Crying and developing an eye twitch every single day for a year she performed on Teeter Board in Cirque du Soleil's Mystère because she was terrified of the apparatus. Competing with a sprained neck and back . Competing with labyrinthitis, a condition caused by California-specific seasonal allergies, which led to a broken bone and very scary crashes. College Culture Shock Moving to LA immediately after the 1994 earthquake when UCLA looked like "Beirut" Not finding the United States to be as multi-cultural as her home in Mississauga, near Toronto, Canada. Getting booed in a college meet. Her opinion of current college difficulty compared to her era in the 90's and how the loss of compulsories effect the current skill level of incoming elite gymnasts. Being Different Her dance foundation and wanting to be like her famous choreographer sister, Anastasia (Stacy) Umeh Feeling out of place in school and in her upper middle-class gym Being bullied--being chased home from elementary school by rock-throwing girls Gymnastics always being the happy, safe place. Elite Gymnastics Scoring low domestically Her advice for learning a painful skill, doing it Fashion show, changing leotards for each event, mobster leos Hair fashion when Stella didn't have enough hair for a scrunchy, but the head coach wanted her in one (cue comedy) "I never saw myself as a black athlete. I always come back to, this is what I love to do. I don't really care what my color, my creed, my size, my shape is. This is where I am supposed to be. If someone wants to sort of, discriminate against me or make things difficult for me because I'm different, then that's their shit. I'm still going to go out and do what I need to do." Dealing with the reputation of being difficult and non-conforming because she stood up for herself and her teammates. For example: The time Stella asked a judge what rumors she has heard about her. The time Stella told off a Canadian judge for giving the Canadians lower scores than the international judges from the window of a taxi, as she took Larissa Libby (née Lowing) to the emergency room! Artistic Style The story her coach, Alex Bard, loves to tell about the time she refused to dance for him! Her unique style was "not revered in Canada," but it was abroad because being different was an asset. "I was loved internationaly, because in the end of the day, it was just about what I was doing on the floor." The Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 She cried for 30 days after the games because of the emotional investment in the journey and how fast it came and went. Parties, make-out sessions and how she snuck out of her room with the help of the Olympic wrestling team. Transitioning out of sport for the first time at age 40 Never had an orthopedic surgery due to or during her gymnastics career. Had her first surgery after 13 years as an acrobat with Cirque du Soliel. Thought she wouldn't be able to walk after college. Thought her body would be "decimated." Advice to her younger self, "Do it your way. Do it the way that feels right and intrinsic to you. Follow that passion. Dream huge and don't let any thing or anyone, including yourself, stand in your way. Because if you believe in what you are doing and you are loving it, you can't go wrong. Whether you place first or last, you can't go wrong." The Ivory Elephant Group: theivoryelephantgroup.com Join Club Gym Nerd here to support the show and get free perks in return. Larisa Iordache ended the year on a high, winning the 2014 Glasgow World Cup. This week we've included time stamps for each segment of the show per your request. Let us know if you like it. Uncle Tim, Emma, and Jessica chat about: The Glasgow World Cup (00:00): massive moments of joy, shooting fire, Vanessa Ferrari looking tired, pulling shorts up to belly buttons, John Orozco and Oleg Verniaiev scamping around Glasgow, why Pauline Schaefer of Germany stole the show. Plus the juniors we fell in love with from Espoir. The Mexican Open (34:14): The Four Amiga's: Boguinskaya, Daniela Silivas, Podkopayeva, and Chusovitina; the greatness that is Marta Pihan-Kulesza's exquisite form; the return of the fierce little Italian, Enus Mariani to international competition; and most importantly, our review of the latest super bling $10,000 leotard by GK. NCAA previews (52:49): Our thoughts of Chayse Capps new floor routine, the genius that is Stacey Ervin's stick-a-thon floor routine and our gratittude for NCAA gymnastics after the long artistic drought that is the elite gymnastics code of points hell. Our favorite items from the 2014 Ultimate Gym Nerd Gift Guide (1:01:16) and what Uncle Tim's gymnastics nieces want for Christmas. It involves heavy excavation machinery. Uncle Tim gives his review of Cirque du Soliel's steampunk-inspired show, Kurios--complete with droplets of man sweat and what made the wive's in the audience smack their husband's mouthes closed. (1:05:34) Gymternet News (1:13:43): Gabrielle Douglas's agent dished all the dirt on why Dougy left Chow's, an explanation for Mustafina's poor performance in Stuttgart, the coming out stories of a rhythmic and artistc Olympian, how we feel about men's and women's Olympic trials being held separately, new skills in the code of points and why you should sign up for college Fantasy Gymnastics. Mail Call (1:41:43): An outraged Russian listener, Irish Daniel asks what we think of Verona van de Leur announcing her comeback, and a very knowledgable listener takes gymnasts to task for copyright theft against choreographers. An update on Melanie Sinclair (front) the NCAA star, who's kicking ass as an Amazon in Cirque du Soliel's Amaluna. First! We present our scientific review of Amaluna. Then our guest, is the vivacious and effervescent, Melanie Sinclair. Before becoming an acrobat in Cirque du Soliel's goddess powered Amaluna, she was a US National Team member during the Nastia, Sacramone, Memmel years. Always a fan favorite for her sideline antics (see gif and videos below) and emotional filled routines, she finally gained the attention she deserved at University of Florida. She was a leader on the team, putting Florida on the map. She was fun to watch no matter what she was doing - competing or dancing with herself during warmups. She exemplifies all of the reasons gymnastics fans adore NCAA gymnastics. We discuss: The old school uneven bars act she performs in Amaluna Growing up at Orlando Metro under the tutelage of Jeff Wood and Christi Barineau The true friendship of her teammate, Amanda Castillo. How she became so consistent in college when it was so illusive in elite. The power of fun and being oneself in gymnastics. How she recovered when she gymnastics career was cut short and what advice she'd give to gymnasts in similar situations. How Cirque helps her treat her body like a temple and stay healthy even after a lifetime of gymnastics. The rhythms and cycles of a predominantly female cast. Above - Her career wasn't complete without Amanda Castillo. Everything about Cirque's AMALUNA. This show features college gymnastics' uneven-bar favorites: Amara (Amy) Defilippo (Arkansas), Melissa Fernandez (Illinois), Summar Hubbard (LSU), Linday Bruck-Ayotte (Michigan), Brittany Urbain (Iowa) and Laura-Ann Chong (Oregon).
